Elitist? Obama Says Nah - He's Got "Street Cred as a Down to Earth Guy"
April 25, 2008 3:13 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Does having five suits, four pairs of shoes, and being a better bowler than some think make you a common man?
It's not every day that a candidate's fashion sense makes its way into a press availability, but today in Indianapolis, Indiana, Barack Obama had to defend his wardrobe choices, making the case that he is not an elitist.
The question came from a local reporter, who said he's been looking like the "GQ candidate." And in the wake of the "bitter" controversy, which prompted his opponents to label him an elitist, the timing of the question was particularly poignant.
Obama launched into a long diatribe listing all of the things that he believes place him in the common man category, rather than the elitist side.
"I think this is a fairly standard suit here," he explained, "I haven't changed my approach to dressing too much. . . I basically buy five of the same suit, and then I patch them up and wear them repeatedly."
"I have four pairs of shoes," Obama added.
The presidential candidate also said he can bowl with the best of the regular guys, arguing that the way that he's been portrayed as a bad bowler is simply not true.
"I have committed to practicing bowling so that I'm better. Although I do have to say the fact that you guys reported that as if I had actually bowled ten frames… You know how there was only seven frames and two of them were bowled by a ten year old… I can’t excuse away the first two gutter balls."
All kidding aside, Obama pointed the finger rather at his opponents, saying that charge of elitism was better suited for them. "It’s true that both the republicans and my opponents to some degree have been trying to paint me as, you know, this elitist out of touch," Obama said. " It's hard for me to figure that out given that you know, I was raised with far fewer advantages than either of my two remaining opponents.”
Obama said he had a similar upbringing to the people of Indiana and mentioned his time as a community organizer in the South Side of Chicago.
"I don't want to go out of my way to sort of prove my street cred as a down to earth guy," the presidential candidate concluded.
When asked, the Obama campaign would not divulge what brand of suit Obama wears.

Since when is "street cred" a presidential qualification. This guy is one empty suited bag of gas. Followed by that other , sniper dodging, bag of gas. We are in real trouble as a nation.

Obama was raised by his white grandparents. He attended the best schools through scholarships. He sees himself equal to others. And as of 4-5 years ago, he paid off he and Michelle's college loans.
If anyone is an elitist, it's the Clintons and McCains
The Clintons earned $20 million+ last year
The McCains are worth $100 million+
The Clintons should ask the fraud of a friend whose trial begun today, Peter Paul, for some financial advice
Seems as her campaign having financial problem, especially with her TOP donor bailing out on her to join the Obama camp... reported today
Or maybe she should call her terrorist friends on Obama... rough him up a bit... eh???

It sounds like a fawning reporting was complementing Obama on his outfit and then Obama went nito a rant about his shoes, bowling, and "steet cred".

I cant stand obama and I think he would be horrible for this country....but I think that question asked by that reporter is really pretty stupid.

Seah,
I agree.
Why he talked about the bitter people to the multi billionaires?
Now , he tries to embrace them?
It's too late.
In my state we have lots of small towns and those people were very upset about his comment because they have very good life and they are not poor even they live in a small town.

This guy changes his words every day, every moment. No one can trust him. BTW, what kind of change is he asking for? American political system has been proved the highest standard one. Are you going to change it? What a joke!

"When asked, the Obama campaign would not divulge what brand of suit Obama wears."
Empty.

What was the question asked of Obama? ABC states a reporter told Obama he look like the GQ candidate. that is not a question.

i laugh about this all the time...the guy who is third generation American elite who is married to a multi multi millionaire wife who went to the schools he went to and the ivy league woman in the pearls who hasn't driven herself anywhere in 30 years...who didn't want to "bake cookies" who is worth over a hundred million dollars and flies on private jets...
and they are throwing the elitist term at Obama
no wonder they think the "foreclosure crisis will either work itself out" or "that a stipend from a paycheck will be worked out with a tax credit and that will fix peoples rent each month that they are paying instead of their healthcare"
ugh.
lol lol lol all the way to my student loans...

I really don't think HRC is wearing clothes out of JC Penny's. Who cares how many suits he has or the brand. He's entitled to have whatever he wants both he and wife have jobs and people who work can buy what they want.

Belle Starr - hahahahahah - that was perfect.
I don't need a President with "street cred".
This is getting really embarassing.

The Commander Guy:
C'mon, do you actually think Mr. I'm so hot it hurts, actually has only four pairs? Methinks not.
Elitism is a belief and an arrogant attitude that one is superior to others. Generally, people who are elitist hold deep insecurities, which they defend against by holding themselves as a cut above. Some elitists demonstrate this attitude with shoes, cars, and other artifacts. Others demonstrate this attitude by working from a position of intellectual and classist exclusivity, as Obama did with his upscale donors in San Francisco. Chances are good that he has more than four pairs of shoes, but even if he doesn’t, his elitism is a fundamental personal attitude.

Please just forget about he was raised by single mother and his grand parents.
Lots of kids raise by single parent. It does not mean their parent are poor.
Raised by single parent is different than economic problem.
For Obama, he was raised by her mother who remarried to Indonesian man and they then lived in Indonesia for many years.
In Indonesia he attended to private high school which was pretty expensive.
His grandmother was a VP of bank in Hawaii.
How much VP salary at that time.
I'm sure it's more than enough to support him.

This has gone beyone ridiculous. We have sky high oil, wheat, and rice prices, the bottom has fallen out of the housing market, we have two wars raging with no end in sight, and Senator Obama gets asked about his suit?
Posted by: jmengate | Apr 25, 2008 4:22:57 PM
Does anyone remember those insignificant things ... now what were they called? Oh yeah, issues? I personally don't care what shoes the candidates wear, where they go to church, what they eat, or even what they do in their bedrooms. I do care about our sinking economy, the young people who are losing their lives in Iraq, climate change, etc. Come on Democrats, let's elevate these discussions, no matter who your candidate is. There's really important work to be done!

Emily - So is it fair to say that one is elitist if someone thinks they are better than anyone else in the whole entire country to do something? Like, run a country for example. Wouldn't this make all three candidates elitist by some people's definition? Do we really want Joe 6-Pack running our country? I mean, he'd be better than Bush/Cheney, but can't we strive for something better?
Posted by: jmengate | Apr 25, 2008 4:25:55 PM
Obama just made a big mistake by talking about his clothes.
People will see that one of his suits costs more than the $10,000 lessons he buys for his daughter--boo hoo.
This will make a $200 haircut seem cheap!
Yes, Obama is a common man! HA! We ALL have to worry about making political deals with thieving land developers to buy our homes!

jp, michigan - It's funny you make those comments about Chicago/Illinois politics given that you appear to be from a state that can't even follow the simple rules set down by the DNC for the primary election. Can't refute what you say, though.
Posted by: jmengate | Apr 25, 2008 4:28:17 PM
It doesn't matter what is your background but it matters what is your thought and what do you think of other people....
His "bitter" speech just simply indicates he IS an elitist in his deep mind... unfortunately it was exploded to surface by "accident"....
Posted by: True Truth | Apr 25, 2008 4:28:18 PM
You know...for Obama to claim "street cred" is absolutely the MOST laughable thing I've heard from a politician this season. HE probably got this "cred" when HE was dodging some sniper fire in the Chicago streets. LOL.
COME ON!
