Elizabeth Edwards Considers Pre-North Carolina Endorsement
April 29, 2008 4:00 PM
ABC News' Karen Travers and Teddy Davis Report: With a week to go before the North Carolina primary, two key Tar Heel State endorsements still remain unclaimed: John and Elizabeth Edwards.
The Edwards' have stayed on the sidelines of the Democratic nomination battle since he dropped out of the race in New Orleans in January.
But in an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday, Elizabeth Edwards said she would not rule out making an endorsement before next Tuesday's primary.
"I'd be surprised, but things can happen any day. Never say never," Mrs. Edwards said from Orlando, FL where she is vacationing with her family. "My current inclination is not to say any more than I have said and John would have to speak for himself but as I said he's also on vacation."
In the past, Mrs. Edwards has said she endorses Clinton's health-care plan but remains neutral in the presidential race.
Mrs. Edwards said she did not think endorsements from Democratic Party notables like her husband and former Vice President Al Gore would have the effect of uniting the Democratic Party in this bitter nomination battle.
"If we thought that somehow there was a partial bloodletting that an endorsement would solve, that would be reason to do it. I don't think Vice President Gore or my husband think their endorsement would change that dynamic."

Ok. This is basically a Clinton endorsement. She is DYING to endorse.
Elizabeth Edwards should endorse. But make it clear John is not.
This is fair. Obama cant freak out over that.
Elizabeth Edwards is basically using the same language that Jimmy Carter is.
So why not just endorse ? We all know Carter endorses Obama.

The pun is not done in good taste.
Hoosiers for Hillary!

If forer Sen John Edwards is sincere about the things he said during this campaign and also during the 2004 campaign, he would be able to see clearly which candidate will truthfully support the vision that he has for our country.
One candidate lies without any reason.
This candidate believes that she is entitled to the presidency of the U.S.A. because of who she is.
She has shown that she will do and say anything to achieve her goal.
The other candidate is new to nationwide politics but sincerely believes in the goodness of the American people. This candidate has made some mistakes in his campaign but his sincerity cannot be questioned.
He has inspired millions of American to become involved in the political process.
Whatever your choice Sen Edwards, do what you think will be better for all Americans.

Would Elizabeth's endorsement really matter that much?
Posted by: Wendy | Apr 29, 2008 4:22:36 PM
While Sen. Edwards is a certainly a notable endorsement, and Elizabeth Edwards would make the news with hew own endorsement, comparing either of their endorsements to VP Gore's endorsement reminds me of the days when Isiah Thomas would compare himself to Michael, Larry and Magic in B-ball. Sure he was a great player, but please.

Do endorsements really mean much? EMK and john Kerry both endorsed Obama and he lost Massachusetts. I think voters aren't stupid and can make there own decision. If I were the Edwards' right now I would be holding fire. There is little point right now jumping on either bandwagon when I think the picture will be a lot clearer after Indiana and North Carolina. If Obama wins Indiana you may well finally see movement amongst the uncommitted super ds. If Hillary wins Indiana and does better than expected in North Carolina, then you may get movement away from Obama.

Sen Edwards spoke to the POOR. He spoke out against poverty and the lower class. This is strictly Clinton territory.
They overwhelmingly approve of Clinton over Obama.

Obama wont win Indiana . He may even lost north Carolina now.
The North Carolina guv endorsed, and survey usa just did a poll at 5% for Obama. It was 26% two weeks ago.
This is a state he should win by 20% .

Why is Mrs Edwards telling this and keeping every one in suspense? She was impressed with Clinton's health plan and said so publicly. now this! So everyone knows her influence has decided the Edward nomination-- what its going to be! It is a shame! Obama deserves better from Edwards! He brought in a new front, new generation, new hope to this generation...this lady is selfish!

If Obama doesnt win NC by 20% , he should drop out.
Posted by: tomdavie | Apr 29, 2008 4:35:02 PM
No way NC goes for Hil' tomdavie. He will pull it out, regardless of all the distractions. He'll weather the storm.
Those for Hillary should think twice about her tactics. She is a liar, just like her husband. Face it, ok? They'll do ANYTHING to win this. How shameful.

I'm not sure if these endorsements matter much over the short term, but I think the more you hear someone is being endorsed, the better their name and desirability looks. This is why the media go on and on and on about Obama's endorsements but barely give any attention to Clinton's - especially her black endorsements.

Every day the comment boards for any article about the campaign show that the party is becoming hopelessly divided and with venom that assaults the eyes and ears.
How is any of this ranting supposed to promote any agenda for positive change?
This party cannot defeat McCain in November unless it is united AND substantially increased in numbers.
That is the only factor that any democrat should be focused on.

I don't believe endorsements sway people one way or the other. Everyone gets all excited when someone endorses Hillary and Obama, like these people are gods or something. They are just ordinary people, no different from us.
Posted by: lisa | Apr 29, 2008 4:41:18 PM
I agree, what a slimy pun indeed on that first comment. It should be removed from the comments.
I wish that the Edwards would endorse Hillary Clinton. But it is enough that Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama are joined at the hip. Some spiritual mentor!

So you all are free to express your opinions and preferences, but Ms. Edwards needs to keep her powder dry?
This is someone who has done far more for the party than any of you ever will. She gave months and years of her life to serve on the frontlines of the campaign in 2004 for a presidential candidate who stunk on ice. She gave years of her husband being on the campaign trail, as a standard-bearer for the party.
But she should just keep her big trap shut. That's very nice. And very Democratic.
Fact is, you don't know a thing about this party and its openness. Yes, it's messy. That's what's allowed a snake-oil salesman like your candidate to move to the front of the line. But be assured we are in the process of rectifying that problem now.

tomdavie:
You are so class-less and clueless that the Clintonistas should run you out of town on a rail!
As a former Edwards supporter, I'll be shocked if he endorses Clinton. But, politics is politics.
But Clinton is NOT the candidate of the working class.
If the Edwards are smart, they'll wait until after NC, to avoid feeling bad when Clinton drops out of the race after losses in NC and Indiana.

I wish Mrs. Edwards would endorse HRC. Obama has been so damaged at this point that I truly think he is unelectable. His credibility is gone. 20 years is 20 years. He is just now outraged? Not until Rev. Wright insulted him is he able to see the light? Please! His campaign knows full well that Obama had to come out today and scream outrage. Too little, too late. If he had a report card right now, it would look like this:
Judgment = F
Credibility = F
Impostor = A+
Accepts responsiblity: F
Sincere: F
Requires too much supervision: Check
Anxious to please: Check
Inconsistent: Check
Exhibits creativity: Check
Excessive talking: Check
Distubs others: Check
Capable of better work: Check
