Elizabeth Edwards and McCain Spar over “Cheap Shots”

April 21, 2008 8:28 PM

ABC News' Raelyn Johnson: Though her husband's presidential bid was sidelined Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Sen. John Edwards is actively playing presidential politics.

Edwards has recently lodged a variety of criticisms against the Republican nominee John McCain for not offering universal healthcare.

"He has not spent a single day not protected by a federal health plan, not a single day of his entire life, and yet he denigrates this care," said Edwards in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.

Appearing yesterday on ABC News' "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" McCain called Edwards' comments a "cheap shot".

"It's a cheap shot, but I did have a period of time where I didn't have very good government health care," said McCain.

Today, Edwards responded to McCain writing as a guest blogger for the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank she recently joined as a senior fellow.

"That is not a cheap shot, it is a potentially life and death question for tens of million of Americans. And it is a question Sen. McCain must address," wrote Edwards.

"Sen. McCain noted that he was not receiving government health care for the six years he was in captivity. That is true. But it has nothing with my point — which is that the problem with Sen. McCain's health care plan is not how it affects us –- but how it affects the tens of millions of Americans with preexisting conditions who, unlike Sen. McCain and myself, do not have the resources to pay for quality health care."

While Democrats Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton are engaged in their own contest—Elizabeth Edwards has had no problems taking the republican nominee to task for weeks.

In March, appearing at the Association of Health Care Journalists, Edwards argued said she and McCain had one thing in common, "Neither one of us would be covered by his health policy." ABC's News' Jake Tapper has that write-up HERE.

Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer the day after the 2004 presidential election, and just over a year ago was diagnosed with incurable cancer. She argues that McCain's proposals would make it difficult for insurance companies to cover preexisting conditions like melanoma and breast cancer. In 2000, McCain was diagnosed with malignant melanoma.

Since Sen. John Edwards' departure from the race, Elizabeth Edwards has not endorsed a candidate—just as her husband has not.

However, during and interview on ABC News' "Good Morning America" she told Robin Roberts she preferred Sen. Clinton's healthcare plan to Sen. Obama's with the belief that Clinton's is truly universal.

"You need that universality in order to get the cost savings ... I just have more confidence in Sen. Clinton's policy than Sen. Obama's on this particular issue."

Elizabeth Edwards is right. McCain has been on government welfare all his life. Has he ever had a real job?

Elizabeth Edwards and John McCain are not the type of people who need or deserve universal health care! They are both worth millions of dollars.

McCain is right - if you actually made health care affordable, then most rational people would purchase it without a 2nd thought.

And Doug, I suppose while McCain was being tortured at the Hanoi Hilton he was still receiving a paycheck from the military, but I don't that those 5 and half years qualifies as welfare - do you?!?

I also find it disconcerting that Senator McCain failed to cosponsor Senate legislation dealing with mental health insurance parity in groups of 50 or more. Its amazing when those who have super group health insurance benefits espouse idividual choice for individuals unable to get first class coverage in the discriminatory, individual health care market.
Our federal employees have had full mental health insurance parity in THEIR group program (FEBHP) since 2001.
Since parity legislation has passed the Senate & House, quality legislation should become law. Pay attention to Senator McCain's position on mental health insurance parity. He's covered in a quality plan...will you & your family be covered in a similar manner ? Stay tuned !

Pure drivel, oh and socialized Canadian health care WILL finish off our economy and bankrupt or put in jail the rest of us who can't afford it. Just ask Canada how there system is working for them. Nothing is for free. You have to TAKE from others in order to "give away" anything. That is what government is all about. No wonder the liberals and conservatives have come to love the prospect of democracy in the middle east. Just look what compliance enforced at the barrell of a gun can do... The great American empire will collapse frtom internal financial reasons alone, and not by even firing a shot. Russia never lost a battle but yet they still lost the cold war. Implementing and enacting those same failed polices, will do us in with the same result. Why can't anybody understand these basic facts. It's not like this happened 100 years ago. Know history, or you are doomed to repeat it. We have NO excuses. None.

McCain has betrayed people who serve in our military by not supporting Jim Webb's updated version of the GI Bill. Why does McCain oppose supporting our troops. From the way he acts, you would think he's getting policy advice from the Viet Cong.

Posted by: Doug | Apr 21, 2008 9:37:54 PM

To Doug Jim Webb's bill isn't the only GI Bill.

Jim Webb's bill is horrible. McCain is for more troop education benefits than Webb's bill. McCain is for benefits to keep them in the military.

Webb's bill was written by democratic staff members.

Webb's bill mandates that troops have to be home for every month that they are away. That takes flexibility out of the hands of commanders on the ground. Democratic staffers shouldn't be telling the commanders on the ground about troop rotations.

Who made Jim Webb god. McCain has sons in the military and doesn't go around using it for political gain like Jim Webb.

McCain has his own GI Bill that he is coming out with not some democratic bill.

Jim Webb has a great bill. What's wrong with giving our troops time to rest and recover. The war in Iraq is over-stretching our military. But John McCain doesn't seem to care at all. Ever since he married a beer heiress worth over $100 million you have to wonder if McCain is totally out of touch with regular soldiers.

Elizabeth Edwards has terminal cancer. Universal Health Care is the cause that she would like to see succeed in her lifetime. She is not likely to mince words or worry about what is or is not politically correct.

I admire her honesty. I also respect the integrity with which she confronts all the candidates....on policy not personality.

When people claim that there is no difference in Clinton's and Obama's plans they are not well informed. The difference is that we currently have 47 million people in America that have no health insurance. Obama plans on covering about 30 million of them. Hillary's plan will cover them all. Both plans have mandates...Hillary for everyone...Obama for every parent with a child under 18.

The truth is John McCain will make some effort to reduce costs. Obama will attempt to reduce costs with more sweeping changes. Hillary would provide Universal Health Care. That is a difference. And probably the main reason John Edwards has not endorsed Obama.

So while the Dems are shredding each other and the "press" is engaged in auto-entertainment they pretend is "journalism," this woman with incurable cancer has decided that someone needs to face the bigoted, senile, temperamental, asinine multimillionaire the GOP has nominated.

Wake me when it's all over?

Posted by: steve | Apr 22, 2008 12:11:32 AM

First let me say that I haven't
read anywhere that her condition is
terminal! Second have Obama and
Clinton already decided to pick
John Edwards as their running mate?
Why isn't Edwards sparring with
McCain? That would make more sense!

Posted by: reaganfan | Apr 22, 2008 12:20:08 AM

I thought McCain was a modest warrior who didn't like to talk about his Viet Nam days? Then how and why did he gratuitously inject it into the health care debate? It almost sounded like a cheap whine for sympathy.

Elizabeth Edwards is a woman of integrity and substance. Who care if she has the money to provider her with good health care. She and her husband have shown over and over they care about the American who don't have health care, mostly due to not having a job. Obama wants to cover only children. What happen to the parents who could die without health care? Who will care for the children? There all ready is health care for children SCHIP, if Obama spent more time in the Senate he may have know. Clinton has the solution and I am sure input from people like the Edwards would make it better!

Medical experts estimate that some 20,000 people in America die earlier deaths annually because they do not have health care coverage. The World Health Organization ranks the United States health care system as 37th, yes 37th in the world (Vietnam is 160th, by the way). I dare the Republicans to wrap those statistics in a flag and wave them.

Why is that Sen John McCain doesn't voluntarily drop his GOVERNMENT paid health care and jump on into the "Private Insurance" plans that he so resoundingly supports for all "other" Americans. After all HE could be IN CONTROL of his choices (just like he keeps harping about Americans being in CONTROL of their health plans). All he has to do to gain that control is OPT OUT of that government controlled health care he has grown so use to. He could get that great big whopping bill every month to pay private insurers for non-coverage.

If the Democratic nominee has any brains at all, he/she will offer Elizabeth Edwards the VP spot. She's as bright and honest as they come.

Posted by: Shea Daniels | Apr 22, 2008 12:50:45 PM

prisioner Mccain got better healthcare than most Americans.

Posted by: rod | Apr 22, 2008 2:03:13 PM

Elizabeth Edwards never talks about one of the reasons healthcare is so expensives. The millions John has taken from hospitals and doctors by being a trail lawyer has helped them financially but has hurt AMERICA.

Mr. Edwards, probably more than any individual in this country, has single handedly diven healthcare costs skyrocketting with mega lawsuits that serve the attorny's more than they serve the sufferers.

What a bunch of hipocrites!

Mrs. Edwards,
I hope John will indorse Hillary so we can have the health coverage we need. I am disabled and have
a lot of health care problems and this would help me as well as many other people. Please talk to him!
We need Hillary to win North Carolina and this
would certainly help. I hope you are doing well
and God Bless You!

I don't think Americans want to elect a man older than 70, who only seven years ago was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. His health won't withstand the rigors of the office.
