For One Day Only: Obama's Flag Pin Returns

April 15, 2008 4:54 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Democratic presidential candidate donned something on the lapel of his suit today that he hasn't in quite awhile: a flag pin.

In October, in widely-criticized comments, Obama said he decided not to wear a flag pin after 9/11 because he believed that became a substitute for true patriotism.

The candidate hasn't been seen wearing a flag pin since his explanation was made. But today at a town hall meeting with veterans in Washington, PA, Obama was given a flag pin by a Vietnam veteran.

Philip Fiumara, an undecided voter, gave Obama the pin in the rope line right before the event started.

On stage, Obama donned the pin.

"It is a flag pin," Obama explained, "I think I'll go ahead and put that on. Because I appreciate your service."

The small town hall was only attended by veterans and their family members and Obama's remarks were targeted to woo veterans – a significant voting block in Pennsylvania  - in promising to improve benefits and restore veteran trust in government.

Obama was still wearing his flag pin when he left Pittsburgh and boarded a flight to Philadelphia.

With John McCain continuing to diss veterans by "not reading" legislation to improve the GI Bill, Barack Obama is the clear choice for America's Veterans!!!

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

OMG, this is so so bad. Pandering at it's very very worst.

Posted by: A reader in Georgia | Apr 15, 2008 5:07:50 PM

Why do you say for only one day?

Perhaps he will wear it more often.

Posted by: Maritza | Apr 15, 2008 5:09:02 PM

What a shame Sen. Obama hadn't thought enough of veterans and this country to wear a flag pin before being handed one by a Vietnam Vet.Next he may actually salute the Flag! Oh, that's right! His wife is just NOW proud of her country. That explains everything!

TexasMessenger,

I don't see McCain or Hillary wear a flag pin.

This issue is just STUPID!!!

Posted by: Maritza | Apr 15, 2008 5:12:32 PM

But Maritza, he made a point to explain that he doesn't wear the flag because it's false patriotism, which I accepted, but now it seems he feels the need to do it anyway. Perhaps his advisors said "Wear the damn pin". Sheesh, you people who are bamboozled by this guy slay me. HE'S JUST ANOTHER POLTIICIAN. Get it?

You can dress him up, but that still doesn't make him presidential.

This is a special pin coming from a veteran who has given it to Obama. It will be important for Obama to wear eveything he will receive during his town meetings as the bracelet he received from the mother of a fallen soldier in Irak. these are special circumstances and he should accept these honorific gifts. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Who let's this guy off script?

"Because I appreciate your service."

What is he thinking??? He has been running for POTUS since January 2007 and now has the audacity to say he appreciates their service? For being a smart guy, he sure does say some stupid things.

People need to read the Flag Code, which includes how to properly display the flag and which also clearly states that items like clothing or jewelry aren't supposed to represent the US Flag. Paper plates, napkins and other decorations depicting the US Flag are also improper displays of this item.

Posted by: Terry | Apr 15, 2008 5:23:28 PM

Oh please BKMC. Why does he "need" a special pin to appreciate our men and women in uniform.

It's like the great race speech, he did it because he has to. Such a follower, not a leader.

Posted by: LOM | Apr 15, 2008 5:23:56 PM

LOM,

Obama didn't just say that he appreciates veterans' services but he appreciates this particular veteran's service and is wearing the flag pin given to him.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

I truly think this is the STUPID SEASON why we are concerned whether or not Obama is wearing a flag pin.

Bush, Clinton, and McCain harmed our military by voting for the Iraq war.

Honor our soldiers by voting for someone who understands the importance of reading an intelligence report.

If Bush, Clinton, and McCain would have stayed out of Iraq, we likely would have captured Bin Laden by now and eliminated the Taliban from Afghanistan.

Posted by: Dan | Apr 15, 2008 5:30:33 PM

Dan - So where did Obama get an intelligence report before he was a senator? You know, before Obama had to vote on Iraq war votes?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 15, 2008 5:33:34 PM

Anyone notice how Obama claims it is political silly season when he is on the hot seat?

How convenient.

They guys is a flip-flopper. Taking his cues from the Kerry play book.

"It is a flag pin. I think I'll go ahead and put that on (now) because I'd appreciate your votes"

NOBAMA in 08. He is soooo two faced. He is only wearing the label pin because he is in front of veterans. Come tomorrow or the next day he'll stop wearing it!! He is soooo fake. As a veteran myself I would be ashamed to have Obama as my commander in chief. John McCain is the man!!!

Posted by: Al | Apr 15, 2008 7:20:43 PM

Not wearing a flag pin is only one issue. Obama also doesn't put his hand over his heart during the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE. His wife's comments about being proud for the first time in her life to be an American, which she stated a few months ago, should be another indication of the type of patriot Obamba would be. I am a 26 year veteran and Obama would be a bad commander in chief. I am voting for McCain, I was leaning towards the dems but no more, they just continue to fight and have no plan for either the party or the country.

Posted by: Al | Apr 15, 2008 7:25:05 PM

Even if by chance Obama continues to wear a pin, which is doubtful, I still will not vote for him; I would sooner vote for clinton, which aint' gonna happen. I am now going with McCain.

Posted by: Al | Apr 15, 2008 7:30:20 PM

I wonder how he felt wearing that pin after he abandoned it for 6 years.

Posted by: crisis08 | Apr 15, 2008 9:15:28 PM

Sudenly Obama is patriatic and wearing a flag pin. A hater of America ? And a
communist and a racist.

Posted by: Dragon | Apr 15, 2008 11:40:05 PM

Try to find a recent picture of Clinton or McCain wearing a flag pin.

Posted by: bob | Apr 16, 2008 1:40:52 PM

JUST SAY NO TO OBAMA
I JUST CAN"T TAKE ANY MORE OF HIS 2 FACED LYING ... .
why does he think we all cling to religion and guns. cause we're stupid midwesterners and easterners. we ain't smart like him. but i hope we can see through his dishonest politics.

hillary and mccain did not make a big deal about the flag pin or the flag. that's why we don't pin point them.

if clinton doesen't make it i'll be a cross over. i will never vote for a boy named obama

Senator Obama is a becoming disgrace for all of America.
When are the American people going to wake up.
To stand up for Obama we would have to stand up with his pastor and his views.
Obama is still supporting Pastor Wright.
It's terrible.
What about Obama's kids?
What message is he sending them and the youth of America. What would be the big deal to stop with his church and wear a flag pin.
This is very upsetting.
