Former Senators Nunn, Boren Endorse Obama

April 18, 2008 12:53 PM

ABC News' Jake Tapper Reports: Senator Barack Obama has won the endorsement of former Senators Sam Nunn, D-Ga., and David Boren, D-Ok.

Nunn, who chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1987 to 1995, called Obama "the best choice to lead our nation".

Both Nunn and Boren will serve on the Illinois senator's National Security Foreign Policy Team.

In a press release released by the campaign Boren, the longest-serving Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said he is joining Obama's foreign policy team because "I believe it is my duty as a citizen to do all I can to help our country at this critical moment."

Boren continued, "He has made a non-partisan approach to all issues a top priority."

They are doing this because they know Comments Gate is about to implode on camp Clinton. The moral of this story, be careful when you call someone an elitest.....Be careful if you are a network and you overly favor one candidate over another, because you can be damn sure some other organization is working to bring down the other. It's called politics folks, learn to play in the game with some degree of integrity or not at all - whether you are a candidate or a network!

Is anyone enjoying this as much as I am? I agree, the campaign should proceed ful steam ahead. There is so much coming out about these people and so called unbiased news organizations. It is all very entertaining.

It will be interesting to vote for McCain, as a dem who has never voted gop before. But millions of us will. Obama is not suited to be in the white house.

I predict that Sam Nunn will be on Obama's short list for vice presidents.

Why does Hillary Clinton persist in her negative campaigning when every poll says that people do not like it, and her approval rating takes a dive every time she does it? Why doesn't she learn?
That campaign strategy has been a complete disaster since super Tuesday. SSHe thought it would a cakewalk, got sideswiped, and is still to recover...

Joyce,
I think they are doing it because they don't mind having a wimp for a President, they think they can cut good cabinet positions for themselves.

Obama, the wimp factor!

And there's more good news (apart from the PA polls). Former Clinton Labor Secretary ROBERT REICH endorses Obama as well.

Robert Reich writes today:

The formal act of endorsing a candidate is generally (and properly)limited to editorial pages and elected officials whose constituents might be influenced by their choice. The rest of us shouldn't assume anyone cares. My avoidance of offering a formal endorsement until now has also been affected by the pull of old friendships and my reluctance as a teacher and commentator to be openly partisan. But my conscience won't let me be silent any longer.

I believe that Barack Obama should be elected President of the United States.

Although Hillary Clinton has offered solid and sensible policy proposals, Obama's strike me as even more so. His plans for reforming Social Security and health care have a better chance of succeeding. His approaches to the housing crisis and the failures of our financial markets are sounder than hers. His ideas for improving our public schools and confronting the problems of poverty and inequality are more coherent and compelling. He has put forward the more enlightened foreign policy and the more thoughtful plan for controlling global warming.

He also presents the best chance of creating a new politics in which citizens become active participants rather than cynical spectators. He has energized many who had given up on politics. He has engaged young people to an extent not seen in decades. He has spoken about the most difficult problems our society faces, such as race, without spinning or simplifying. He has rightly identified the armies of lawyers and lobbyists that have commandeered our democracy, and pointed the way toward taking it back.

Finally, he offers the best hope of transcending the boundaries of class, race, and nationality that have divided us. His life history exemplifies this, as do his writings and his record of public service. For these same reasons, he offers the best possibility of restoring America's moral authority in the world.

So do they approve of him giving Hillary the finger yesterday in NC?

Go to the Swamp blog of the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun for the unmistakable footage from the best angle.

Obama is unpresidential and unelectable.

The ABC news footage isn't from the right angle but the moment and the crowd reaction is there under "Obama brushes off debate"

You really do have to see the other footage.

Yeah so electable.

Does Jake read his blog? I am wondering if there is any truth to the Peter Paul case that is going on in California? I read on a blog that Bill and Hillary Clinton are suppose to appear in court on the 25th of April concerning the case.

What is the case? What do they have to do with the charges? I'd like to know before I vote. Does anyone on this blog have any information... a link to information?

will be the clintons be in court just days after the PA primary.

"He has made a non-partisan approach to all issues a top priority",

It just means Obama doesn't know what is the fundamental difference between Reps and Dems...

"A top priority" of Obama is to surrender to Reps...It will depend on how much Obama will give to Reps and how much Reps will give back to Obama...

I don't think you want to see Obama mad ,he is a gentleman and that is why he come off as a whimp...The finger you know it is the same as the fishing pole of Chaney in his sunglasses....If she was not a lady cough--- cough he would let her have it...........You have to walk a fine line when dealing with this wenchhhhhh I thought he did very welllllll......

Posted by: honest | Apr 18, 2008 1:27:57 PM

Did she say wimp? If she did, it is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. He is a wimp but she is not a wimp? How does that work? And if he is a wimp, would the label of VICTIM fit her?

Hillary and her supporters cannot have it both ways. Either she is a endless victim, whiner and constant complainer, or she is not. She has cried victim since the beginning of time. She and Bill are liars. I remember immediately after the NH debate, they released an ad title 'Piling On'. She has cried every since then, and people know it. So is she the wimp or is he?

She better brace herself, some stuff is about to hit the fans folks. You all better brace yourselves as well. If she is lucky, it won't hurt break before next week, if it does she can kiss her chances good-bye.

When it gets worst for her, will you all then atill be calling her a champ or defending her when she becomes the crying, wimpy victim all over again?

Regardless, I'm not for one or the other. I was planning on joning the Dems. in Nov. in voting for a Dem. president, however certain events have caused meto shift a bit.

The Peter Paul case has to do with accusations of fraud against the Clintons and an illegal multi-million dollar donation to Hillary Clinton's first run for the Senate.

You folks that keep saying you'll vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee must be the same folks who were stupid enough to vote for Bush the last two times. Do you really dare to call yourselves Democrats? Do you really care about issues? Or are we looking for an excuse to not vote for a black man? Your comments center on the "lapel pin", Rev Wright, the "weathermen", and other such nonsense as if these are the issues this nation is facing. We're at war you clowns! There are thousands of Americans dead and many more thousands of Iraqis dead; Americans are losing their homes to foreclosures daily; people can't go to the the hospital because they have no coverage, and you're worried about "lapel pins" and some pastor who said some stupid things? Someone above said presidential elections are not "silly". No they're not, so if you really care about solving these issues like most thinking people do, knock off the silliness and get behind the nominee of the party--who, in this case, looks like it will be Obama. McCain is just another Bush in sheep's clothing, so if you liked the last eight years, you'll love McCain...get real already.

Always there is a big repercussion when people lose trust on someone.

Hillary's Bosnia problem is clicking in heads of a lot of people, especially after almost admitting it on PA debate of this week!

Posted by: Peace | Apr 18, 2008 1:44:00 PM

Revenge voting is so sad, why would you want to throw your vote away just because your candidate doesn't win the nomination? I am for Obama but if he is not chosen, I will vote for Hillary (even while hoding my nose) because we MUST have a Democrat in office or our fighting men and women will continue to die.

Obama is leading only because the stupid Dems primary rule... If the Dems's rule follows the same as Reps' or GE, Obama won't be in the race for long.......

The Dems' rule makes Obama, but it doesn't mean he is qualified to be a president with his least capability, the least experience, the least strength and the least INTEGRITY...

I've been a dem for thirty years have gave money supported all locals worked for the party held my nose and voted for Kerry but not this time I am feed up at this point and I think McCain will not tax me like kennedy and gang have in the past when you have a student loan and you pay on it and you get behind they have a habit of taking your whole pay plus some. remember the hearings in congress and the IRS so no I won't vote for old dems that believe tax tax tax and go after people who can't fight you.

IT IS A LONG WAY TO GO. IT IS VERY INTERESTING TO SEE AND HEAR NEW THINGS EVERY BLESSING DAY. BUT AT THE END OF THE GAME WE WILL UNITE AND THEN DEFEAT THE REPUBLICANS IN GENERAL ELECTION. MR. Obama no longer attracts Independents as before when all his issues came up....

Obama can not win over more Rep or Independents. He will lose at least 10% of Dems (accounted to 30% of Hillary's supporters) in G.E. if he is nominated...

So mathematically, he has already been defeated...

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 18, 2008 1:59:53 PM

Posted by: al | Apr 18, 2008 2:02:50 PM

Zdnet - The republicans like Obami's whimpy performance at the debate so much they decided:

9:19 pm ET: A Republican strategist offers this, to ABC's Karen Travers: "I think we’re going to buy 90 minute infomercials in October to replay this . . . I can’t believe Obama’s answer on Ayers. It’s like he never even considered the question. Doesn’t he do debate prep?! His answer was so bad/wrong/misleading/offensive – it’s going to be a huge problem for him . . ."

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 18, 2008 2:05:06 PM

The Democratic elite (Howard Dean and friends) are in quite the conundrum. Since Obama has no chance of winning the general election, what will they do?

They are willing to wipe egg off of their faces in January when McCain takes office rather than putting the superior candidate of Hillary Clinton on the ticket. I'm sure they will find a way to loop back and blame Hillary.

Whatever institution gave that guy (Dean) his doctorate should consider rescinding it because he is an idiot!

Things are looking better by the minute for John McCain.

It seems Obamamaniacs very much underestimate the opposition to their hero from sections of rank and file democrats.

What went wrong? First of all Obama is one heck of a phoney; because of media not doing its job, he managed to do so well in the earlier primaries. If he had been exposed 3 months ago there would be no contest today.

Second, as McCain camp said today Obama is "recklessly dishonest". NY Times columnist Paul Krugman today asked Obama to stop bad mouthing /dissing the economic success story of Bill Clinton presidency.

Third, Obamamaniacs, extreme left wing has used incredibly offensive language against the Clintons, a big chunk of Hillary supporters will go McCain. If there was any doubt on this regard, events of last week reinforce the likelihood Obama will win only Vermont in November.

John McCain is smiling. Our family, friends are all absolutely committed to vote McCain if Obamia is the nominee. We are in a swing state. No kidding.

McCain is much better than Obama who can lead this country....

Dems DNC is just destroying its own chance to re-gain W.H.

There is no doubt that McCain will do whatever he can to improve this country in terms of economy and national security...

If people think Reps can't handle economy, he/she must be too naive... The issue is who will be benefited.....That will be the real difference between Dems and Reps.....

So if you are work-class people and income is less than xxxxx, then you should vote for Dems, otherwise, it won't make a big difference for you from either Dems or Reps...

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 18, 2008 2:12:15 PM

To "I have actually faired quite well under a Bush administration (as much as I detest the guy)" You are exactly the problem. All you care about is how you "faired"? You're living a country where millions of people are not fairing well, where war is killing thousands, and where the reputation of the US has sunk to new lows. Think about something else besides yourself. Ask yourself why people around the world are hoping for Obama's victory. Ask yourself why so many thoughtful people have chosen to cast their lot with Obama. Believe it or not the world is bigger than you. And this country needs real change, not more "Bush-Lite" politics.

LOM - There is a democratic house and senate now. Did they end the war as promised? Anyone know what they did? And @ 9:15 pm ET: Obama is trying to skate around his plans on the Social Security payroll tax. Gibson is right, lots of people make between $97,000 and $250,000, and their taxes would go up. Nobody wants to favor a tax hike, but Obama may be ceding the high ground of intellectual honesty by not calling this what it is.

What taxes are you going to raise Obama besides the above?

Obama's response on the tax issue was inexperienced and naive. I was very unhappy hearing his non-response to Gibson's comment about a lot of people making between $97K and $250K. What is Obama thinking?

Obama's tenure in the Senate was his chance to stand up against a war, but he voted the way of the majority. What kind of new kind of politics is that? Where is his conviction? He doesn't have any...he is merely a puppet for Kennedy and Kerry.

It's sort of like wanting your kids to be star athletes in school because you weren't...

Obama is a disaster for the dems. The obama youth don't quite get it that a wide coalition is needed to win the white house. youth and AA and some elite votes won't do it against the gop.

The Gallup daily tracking poll, taken from Tuesday to Thursday, indicates viewers may have had similar assessments (RE THE DEBATE)

The poll showed Obama with just a 3-point national advantage over Clinton, 47 to 44 percent. A few days ago, Obama had an 11-point lead in the same poll.

Dogsoldier -- Yea, the other compliment is when the Obamabots keep saying that Hillary needs to drop out...it's the only way Obama can win the nomination.

Too bad he can't win the general election.

The fresh numbers come as Hillary Clinton calls on Obama to quit whining about his supposed unfair treatment at the debate. Her campaign has already claimed Obama is just trying to cover up an “awful performance” by saying he was hammered with petty political questions.
