Hadley On Olympic Games: Bush Has "No Reason Not To Go"

Share

April 13, 2008 11:20 AM

ABC News' Mary Bruce Reports: National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said this morning the president "has no reason not to go" to the Olympic games in Beijing. But Hadley was hesitant to give a definitive response on whether or not Bush will attend the opening ceremonies. "If countries are really concerned about Nepal (sic), we shouldn’t have this sort of non-issue of opening ceremonies or not. They should do the hard work of quiet diplomacy to urge the Chinese government -- in their interest -- to take advantage of this opportunity to do something," Hadley said in a "This Week" appearance.

He went on to say that a boycott of the Olympic games would not be the best avenue for dealing with concerns over human rights. "The way to deal with the issue of Nepal (sic) is not by some -- a statement that you’re not going to the opening ceremonies and say, therefore, I checked the Nepal (sic)box."

Instead, Hadley said the President is opting to pursue a broader diplomatic approach. "What he’s doing on Nepal (sic) is what we think the international community ought to be doing, which is approaching the Chinese privately through diplomatic channels and sending a very firm message of concern for human rights, a concern for what’s happening in Nepal (sic), urging the Chinese government to understand that it is in their interest to reach out to representatives of the Dalai Lama, and to show, while the whole world is watching China, that they are determined to treat their citizens with dignity and respect. There is an opportunity here."

Stephen Hadley seems not to know the difference between Tibet and Nepal, and no one on this news program corrects him or informs the public of the stupid error. All the "political experts" involved on letting this error through should be greatly embarrassed.

Does our national security advisor knows that Tibet and Nepal are different? Nepal is an independant country whose Maoists are supported by the Communist Chinese against the democratic forces there. Tibet is a land occupied by force by the Chinese without the consent of its people. USA is willing to sacrifice Tibet to the Chinese for its own political aims which in the long run will prove to be our own downfall. Stephen Hadley repeatedly said Nepal instead of Tibet in his comments and I am surprised that George let him repeat this without correcting him.

Cannot believe he is the "National Security Advisor", does he not know the difference between Nepal and Tibet.

I saw Fox and there he said Tibet. I guess he is confused between Nepal and Tibet.

We need to emphasize world geography more in schools, I guess.

No wonder we have a "GREAT FOREIGN POLICY" run by CHENEY and CO.
Absolutely...reality show geography bee Republicans vs Democrats... even my 8th grader know better. Or is it sheer arrogance and 'couldn't care less" attitude??? And he is the "National Security Advisor", isn't there some competency test for this post????

Posted by: Maha Nagarajan | Apr 13, 2008 11:42:32 AM

Of course he should go, after all, he's repeatedly demonstrated himself to be on par with China and ALL totalitarian regimes. Bush is not only a supporter of countries that deny human rights, he's an innovator.

Posted by: JR | Apr 13, 2008 11:42:39 AM

Shame on George that he did not correct Stephen Hadley about the difference between Tibet and Nepal.

Posted by: Thomas Blam | Apr 13, 2008 11:43:34 AM

Nepal is not Tibet. Is this just more shocking incompetence from our "National Security Advisor"?

What does Hadley know? In 1950, China invaded Tibet. Sikkim was invaded by India in 1974. Now, Nepal's King is about to be deposed, possibly leaving Nepal vulnerable. Is Nepal the next independent nation to be sacrificed?

Posted by: PG | Apr 13, 2008 11:56:09 AM

Why should George correct him..who is the National Security Advisor George or Hadley? Isn't he (Hadley) supposed to know what he is talking about????

Posted by: Maha Nagarajan | Apr 13, 2008 11:57:53 AM

This is an administration prone to conflating different things, like Iraq and Al-Qaida, sunni and shia. No wonder they are confused between Nepal and Tibet. Same pattern of not knowing the complexities of the world. Doesn't surprise me at all any more.

Shame on Hadley, but double shame on Stephanopolous, why did he not correct Hadley? OUR security is dependent on this man who doesn't even know what country he should be talking about??!!

I believe the Olympic games should go on, and let all the great atheletes from around the globe show off their talents and years of hard work.

HOWEVER, I also believe that the leaders of the world should unite and make a powerful statement to the Chinese government by boycotting the opening ceremonies and embarassing the hosts. All leaders of the freedom-loving-nations, yes I'm talking to you George W Bush, have a GREAT reason not to go to the opening ceremony. This will speak louder than ever on behalf of all those who cannot speak on their behalf, such as people of Sudan and China itself.

By the way, Mr. Hadley, the China I'm referring to is the big one, NOT Taiwan, just in case you are confused.

Posted by: SRC | Apr 13, 2008 12:26:40 PM

On another note, the only American politician who pronounces Pakistan correctly seems to be Barack. Senstivity to small things goes a long way!

Posted by: Maha Nagarajan | Apr 13, 2008 12:27:43 PM

I sat watching this with my mouth hanging open. Sure, Stephanopoulos should have corrected him and should be cited for dozing at the wheel, and yeah Mr. Hadley had just finished listening to President Carter talk about Nepal. But if I - some guy eating his oatmeal half-asleep on a Sunday morning - immediately experiences cognitive dissonance upon hearing the name "Nepal" come up in reference to the Olympics, surely a National Security Advisor acting as spokesmodel for the U.S. government (and being careful not to say anything about the president's sports-watching itinerary) should be able to keep straight what country he's supposedly concerned about.

Posted by: Todd VerBeek | Apr 13, 2008 12:44:07 PM

Mr Hadley, National Security Adviser does not know the difference between Nepal and Tibet. No wonder the foriegn policy of Mr. Bush is so chaotic, where the top Government Officals do not even have the general knowledge.

Posted by: Kamal Bhatia | Apr 13, 2008 12:49:58 PM

Hey Stephanopoulos, I guess you promised the white house this was only photo oppertunity and not a real interview. That's the only reason I that you would let Hadley make the same mistake 4 or 5 times without a correction? Or, are you trying for Larry King's job?

It is the start of a new world! A world where we (USA) are a state of the China Empire! It is true. Even a General slipped and started to talk about it. We will not stop China for one reason only. We (USA) can't. Our government knows it. We are becoming too economically dependent on China. It is all about the corporation making money. While we lose our nationalism. It is too late. All, the master plan. Of one world Government. Problem is. U.S. corporations thought they would be in charge. Tibet, Nepal, Taiwan & Mongolia Etc.. U.S.A. will do nothing. Until we get someone Like Roosevelt who is scared of nothing. Start making things in America again. Then cut them (China) off!!! Until they give up on global dominance! To understand that is our job!!!!!

Posted by: SoCal | Apr 13, 2008 1:03:11 PM

Wow, Powerful stuff, SoCal. I agree. Stop China. Build in U.S.A. For one reason only. self preservation! We as a nation. Are in a critical time in history. Do we live for today (lower prices @ Walmart). Or do we preserve our future as a sovereign nation? It might sound crazy now. But, in a few years. You will look back at this moment in time. When we still could talk about it!!!!!!!

Posted by: Sherry | Apr 13, 2008 1:10:08 PM

I believe it is too late! China is too powerful for us. Unless we are willing to go nuclear. But we are talking about economical takeovers. A war of power. Not of military. Because this kind of takeover. Comes slowly, So slow. We notice it. When we allow, a nother nation to protect our cities. Oops, we did that already. Katrina & Mexico. Remember? Ouch! It Is, Too late!!!!!

I am happy so many caught this mistake by our so called National Security Advisor. If he had been there during the 2nd world war we would have bombed London instead of Berlin. With all the protests and the Tibetans waving their flags our National Security advisor misstated Nepal instead of Tibet. If Barak OBama had made this mistake John McCain would have aroused and Hillary Clinton would have made several advertisements on this. But Stephen Hadley gets a free check from all the experts from ABC News. How do we manage to get such incompetants in our Government and Media at the same time.

Why wouldn't Judas(sic) correct our national security advisor when he falsely claimed Nepal as a subject of China? Doesn't Judas(sic) have an earpiece? New lows are upon us...

Posted by: Ged | Apr 13, 2008 1:23:19 PM

Nepal will be a subject to China. India will try to stop it. In one years time. We will be talking about Nepal China/India crisis. It is altready started!

Hadley's reference to Nepal instead of Tibet shows how dumb this administration is. It was just not once or twice he referred to Nepal. Condeleeza Rice came to the Bush Admin as an expert on Russia. Now we know what kind of expertise she is. The last 8 years have been nothing but a disaster and the self destructive Americans will elect McCain because of his War credentials which is not what America or the World needs at this time. We all can count on a weaker American 4 more years from now.

The Chinese government is a widely documented violator of basic human rights and illegal occupation force in more than one country. You and your country are next as China is using profit from your purchases of “Made in China” products to tie up many important natural resources around the world, including oil, gas, metallic ores, industrial minerals, uranium, coal, etc (I work with these issues on a global level). By securing long-term agreements to monopolize these basic resources used in every facet of manufacturing, the Chinese government is looking to monopolize the world’s economy and every time you buy “Made in China” you are helping them do it. Boycott all things “Made in China”; even if they make a lot of the product we buy, it can be done. Just check the labels and ask a few questions to see if there are Chinese components in product assembled outside of China, for example. Contact American companies that sell “Made in China” and tell them that you are boycotting these products. Contact your congressmen (and women) to do the same: http://www.senate.gov/ and http://www.house.gov/ and email your thoughts to your elected officials. If America is going to be a cornerstone for global democracy then we had better stand up to the Chinese government now before it is too late. I was going to buy a outboard boat motor made in China because I can get it for dealer cost, but will not do so now. Start checking labels today and say “NO” to the Made in China label.

Perhaps Hadley's ignorance about the difference between Tibet and Nepal (come on, that's a tough one, isn't it? ) explains something about Bush's cavalier attitude towards China and its Tibet policies. George, you should be ashamed for not calling him on it! Hopefully, YOU know the difference.

Posted by: Doctor J | Apr 13, 2008 2:39:05 PM

Whoa! Hadley mentioned Nepal a dozen times ; did he not mean Tibet?

Or does the Bush-whacked administration think they are one and the same?

Posted by: xtralumpygravy | Apr 13, 2008 2:46:34 PM

LOL

At least Bush has learned over the years to behave with the no-nonsense Chinese.

Bush is leaving office a more pragmatic person in dealing with the Chinese, of A BILLION more citizens.
A boycott would be ill advised

Many Americans (especially the Conservatives) would like to forget that when Bush first took office, he was humiliated by the Chinese for being too arrogant, brash and brazen.

Many Americans have forgotten that the brazen Bush, in ignorance, crossed the Chinese, who downed the spy plane and forced the US to scrap our EXPENSIVE spy plane and remove it from Chinese territory in crates. lol

I wouldn't be so quick to dis Hadley for referring to Nepal instead of Tibet. In last week's elections for a Constituent Assembly in Nepal, it seems the Maoists will gain a majority. The Maoists are listed as a terrorist group by the U.S., so Nepal is about to suffer the same fate as Gaza when Hamas was democratically elected to lead.

And what closer connection to China could a group have than to be Maoists? Expect trouble with a big T in Nepal, which is 82 percent Hindu. Trouble that will be manipulated, dare I say, with the cognizance of this corrupt U.S. administration.

Posted by: Rosa | Apr 13, 2008 3:00:40 PM

Bush has all the reasons to boycott the opening ceremoniies of Beijing Olympics. If he wants to see the game as aprivate citizen, no one would objects to that. It is his previledge!

Posted by: Al Lieu | Apr 13, 2008 4:32:02 PM

Steven Hadley's comment about "Nepal" proves that the Bush administration does not care about Tibet one bit. I hate the Tibetan people, so can't be happy enough. The Dalai Lama and Tibet will be left to the dustbins of history, no matter how hard they try to embarass the Chinese people or the Olympic games. Nobody cares about the Tibetans. They have no oil and they aren't a threat to Israel, so nobody gives a damn. I love it.

Posted by: Frank | Apr 13, 2008 4:32:30 PM

I saw National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley wrongly using Nepal instead of Tibet in his comments on whether Bush should attend olympics.George didn't even correct it.It looked like dumb and dumber show.
I hope they don't show this internationally. We already have a president who embarasses himself and his fellow Americans with his lack of knowledge.

Posted by: Prathee Kanagaratnam | Apr 13, 2008 6:38:24 PM

George was too intent on wheedling an answer out of Hadley about whether Bush would attend the opening ceremony to notice this incredible gaffe. What's more astonishing is that no one in the control room noticed and got George to comment or gave Hadley the chance to correct himself after the break. With "journalists" like these in charge of our top flight news shows, what hope is there?

Posted by: Roger Carter | Apr 13, 2008 7:18:12 PM

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the obviously pontificating idiot Hadley repeatedly saying "Nepal" when it's TIBET. Quite a differance! Comforting to know that he is involved in our national security. Could he find his rear if it was spot-welded to his hand?!? I think not.
A bit disappointed that he was not corrected.
If he doesn't know so much as even the current events, let alone history and political termoil, etc., etc., then he should AT LEAST stop trying to come off as a holier-than-thou know it all.

Posted by: K.Nyima | Apr 13, 2008 8:03:09 PM

The question that should be being asked is:

Should China and the rest of the world freeze US Bank Accounts and place Embargos and Economic Sanctions against the United States for its support of the illegal Israeli invasion and illegal occupation of Palestine?

Posted by: Anton Grambihler | Apr 13, 2008 8:10:16 PM

Either Bushitis is contagious or Hadley is an idiot. I rather think its the latter. My lord but these people are embarassing.

Posted by: Chris Darnell | Apr 13, 2008 8:53:08 PM

It appears that the National Security Advisor shares the intelligence of the President. Without Karl Rove whispering in his ear, he didn't know what to say. George certainly did notice that Hadley didn't know the difference between Nepal and Tibet - didn't you notice George's sly grin when he said it the first time? He was trying to keep Hadley on the hook to answer about the Games.

Posted by: LG | Apr 13, 2008 11:04:43 PM

Gen. Franks was right. He is the 'dumbest f*cking man' in the world. That's a quote. Print it. It's accurate.

Posted by: Freda | Apr 14, 2008 2:10:24 AM

So just curious, George... did you actually realize the Nepal/Tibet mistakes? And if so, what was your reason for not correcting?

Posted by: Daniel Frankl | Apr 14, 2008 8:42:23 AM

This is unbelievable that National Security Advisor,Hadley, doesn't know the political and geographical difference among Nepal, Tibet and China. I doubted if George knows it either, otherwise he would have corrected. I watched the interview live and it didn't make any sense when he wrongly used Nepal instead of Tibet. This is totally embarrassing for all the parties(countries)involved in it and Stephen Hadley as well.

Who-ha! Too polite to embarass a guest by correcting him on the air, George did not bat so much as a curly lip. Me, I was laughing too hard to hear anything else but "Nepal...Nepal...Nepal." Keep up the good work, Steve.

Posted by: acar | Apr 14, 2008 12:09:44 PM

Our NATIONAL Security Advisor doesn't know the difference between Tibet and Nepal, and ANYONE has the nerve to ask why we want – no, NEED a new day in Washington???? This IS business as usual. Time for a fire sale and new management styles. My 12 year old is more knowledgeable about these events than our 'government' is on a monthly basis. His current events have his teacher calling home at least once a month – he asks why there are more stores going up when the news says that no one has disposable income. And, to top it off, one of the most popular TV/reality shows is “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader”. GUESS NOT!!!!!

Posted by: LD | Apr 14, 2008 1:17:38 PM

What ??? How did Nepal become an issue (or a "nonissue") for Beijing Olympic suddenly?
This is not a simple slip of a tongue. This is a demonstration of total ignorance. From both the interviewer and interviewee.
Now, why would his responses to the other questions - on Hamas and Iraq be any more reliable?

Posted by: Sama | Apr 14, 2008 2:16:49 PM

Ah, leave George alone. I'm glad he let yet another Bush moron expose his ignorance. Once is a slip, four or five times is pure stupidity. Let the bugger spin in his own noose. Compare his slippery evasiveness resulting in zero information with Carter's quiet openness. I don't know why we irritate the public with all the adminstration artful dodgers, Bush, Rice, Cheney, Petraeus, the ever-changing press secretaries, now Hadley, et al. I'd rather hear a panelist speak.

Posted by: brent thurstonrogers | Apr 15, 2008 3:20:18 AM

Ah, blessed are the humbled. Nepal was the topic for George and Carter, so I only smiled when the first Nepal-Olympics link was made. I waited and waited for the correction. Hello, George and staff! Talk about an opportunity missed! Perhaps everyone will be a bit more humble now.
