McCain Doesn't Like N.C. Ad But Can't "Enforce My Will"

ABC NEWS’ Bret Hovell and Russell Goldman report: Sen. John McCain said Thursday that if elected president -- and becomes the de facto head of the GOP -- he would not demand a change in the leadership of the North Carolina Republican Party despite condemning its plan to air an ad attacking Sen. Barack Obama, D- Ill, and his controversial minister.

At a press conference in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward the Arizona senator and presumptive Republican nominee said, “I cannot enforce my will [but] I can make it clear to them that I will have no part of it.”

As reported by ABC NEWS’ Jake Tapper Wednesday, McCain condemned the state party’s plan to roll out an ad which equates Democratic gubernatorial candidates Richard Moore and Beverly Purdue with controversial comments made by Obama’s longtime minister Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Moore and Purdue are vyng with each other to be the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in North Carolina and both have endorsed Obama.

The GOP ad features a clip of Wright making a 2001 speech in which he says “God bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America.”

"For 20 years, Barack Obama sat in his pew listening to his pastor," the narrator says, then mentioning Moore and Purdue.

"They should know better," the narrator says. "He's just too extreme for North Carolina."

In New Orleans, where McCain is visiting in part to court African American voters, McCain reiterated his displeasure with the ad.

“There’s no place in the Republican Party for the kind of ad that was put up by the North Carolina Republican Party. We communicated with them in the strongest possible terms,” he said.

One day after McCain first called for the party to withdraw the ad, a spokesperson for the state North Carolina GOP said the television spot would run next week.

“The ad will still run,” Brent Woodcox, spokesman for the N.C. Republican Party, told ABC News. “It’s going to be rolled out beginning next week.”

He can't enforce his will on the GOP but he CAN enforce his will on the rest of the world. Does the idea of his finger on the button scare you, it should.

I LIKE that ad and I'm a Democrat.

Call a spade a spade. Or can't I say that anymore?

I live in NC and I'm volunteering for Senator Obama. (For those interested I'm white, 34, middle class, born here, and the first in my family to go to a 4 year college.) The ad is a joke. Republicans here have nothing else to offer in the gubernatorial race whichh might improve the lives of oour citizens so they reak this out of the Jesse Helms playbook. There hasn't been a Republican governor here since 1993. 15 years. It's awful that Democrats have been torn apart by our own candidates but please don't let this pap influence anybody. It's not exactly the talk of the town here in Raleigh.

Emily, I live in North Carolina. They know Obama. They also know Hillary & Bill very, very well as well. The Clintons blatant disregard for truth does sit well here. BTW, I applaud McCain for asking that the Wright be pulled. I cannot for the life of me ever see Hillary or Bill doing that....unless of course they were way ahead.

Quoted from Kevin: "Obama is a profoundly wounded candidate out of step with the american mainstream."

The American mainstream is completely out of step with what America really is all about.

So many people are still so blinded by their anger that when someone like Obama's pastor (who, by the way is NOT running, so his comments are irrelevant to Obama's campaign) speaks the truth, everyone gets all butt hurt and angry.

Face the facts: America is NOT innocent and is partly to blame for 9/11. Only an average of 30% of the people voted in the last two elections...meaning the minority of people allowed a bunch of thugs to take control and start fights with other countries in the people's name.

I'm not for Obama. Hillary is a psychotic witch, and McCain is just another Bush.

When, if ever, are the American people going to GROW UP?!

Louis...don't think so pal. You need to look at the facts and unbiased analysis of his tax plan. I don't hate obama, I just think he's dooped a lot of naive people to believe in him. Read this:

Senator Obama (D - Illinois) likes to call it Tax Relief for Working Families/The Middle Class. Let's explore:

Making Work Pay - The kind Senator from Illinois will institute a new tax credit of $500 per person/$1000 per 'working family'. The intent is to offset the FICA (social security tax) on the first $8,100 of income by eliminating income taxes. Obama claims this will eliminate the income tax for 10 million Americans. Obama would make the credit refundable if it resulted in a negative tax due.

The Junior Senator from Illinois has heard of the Earned Income Tax Credit, because he also plans to increase it. Here is what the IRS page says about the EITC:

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) sometimes called the Earned Income Credit (EIC), is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families. Congress originally approved the tax credit legislation in 1975 in part to offset the burden of social security taxes and to provide an incentive to work. When the EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit.

Hmmm.... sounds a lot like the Obama Making Work Pay plan....
Except it is a lot larger... The EITC is little complicated (hey, it is part of the United States Tax Code) but currently the max is $428 for a single/married with no children; $2833 for single with one child, and $4716 for a single/married with two children. The EITC is on a sliding scale, the max is in the range of approx. $10K to $17.4K of income. It slides toward zero as the income moves toward zero or towards the cap AGI of $39,783 for the married/single with two children. So Obama's plan would add on a kicker...

The result of this is that the marginal tax rate on the lowest income earners will increase. That is, Obama will build into the tax code an incentive to not make more money. Don't take that second job.... if you do your income will go down not up.

Obama will create a whole new group of income non-earners to fill those open 'second jobs' by unemploying millions of tax preparers/accountants. You see Obama will have the IRS send you the completed the tax form, you just need to check their work then send it back. Of course, they can't get my birthday correct (two years in a row now) so they will be able to figure my taxes correctly... no problem there....

In case the low income earner/former tax preparers do not know what to do with their free time, Obama has that covered too... a $4K college tuition tax credit. That will add to your refund and, get this, is available prior to you actually enrolling in courses.

Of course while you are busy (not?) taking classes and working 20 hours a week, your children will need to be cared for. The kindly Senator from Illinois has thought of that too. He will increase the Child Care Tax credit from 35% of eligible expenses to 50% and make the credit... you already know the answer... REFUNDABLE.

So, a married couple with two children each adult working 20 hours a week at minimum wage and taking courses at the local college will make around... $13,000 per year gross (not counting Obama's plan to raise the minimum wage). They will have pay about $975 in FICA. Their income tax withholdings will be completely refunded, they will receive tax credits of $2000 for the child tax credit, $4716 for the EITC, $1000 for Making Work Pay, $8K for tuition credit, and 50% of their Child care expenses. An expected refund of $15,716 + half the day care bill.

Thus, these individuals will suffer a net loss of income from full employment unless they find a job that pays them an after tax net of nearly $30,000. Which means finding a job that pays at least $50K.

Yeah, that's gonna happen. So Obama will increase unemployment by reducing the number of people working multiple jobs to reach full employment and by eliminating millions of jobs in the tax preparation business.

Senator, you are not the change we seek.

Honestly, this blog would fully support setting tax preparers and IRS agents free to pursue other career options by, say, implementing a flat tax with no deductions and no tax credits. This a much simpler and more straight forward approach than Obama's nightmarish web of tax credits. Obama would make the tax form so complex that the working poor, who tend to be under-educated, will need someone else to fill out for them. A flat tax would completely eliminate the need for them to perform a calculation... just send in the year-end paystub showing you made less than bar (what ever number that is... most ideas peg it around $65K) and no tax is owed.

That would be a change you could believe in.... Too Bad Obama doesn't see it that way.

How can we feel right about our country when its Government has been doing so much wrong?

We cant fix the problem until we admit there is one...So you people need to get your heads out of us behinds and live in reality.

The "Willie Horton Treatment" will backfire. We are SICK of the phony manipulation of facts by ad agencies and moronic think takers in order to "fool" the people. They are the fools. This ad will cost McCain everything. It will cost the repubs more seats in the congress and open up repub candidates for the same treatment...by "independent citizen action groups." The guy who made this ad is destroying everything the repubs have worked for...they should repudiate him and put out an apology.

McCain is a whimp and a fraud.

He "cant" stop this from happening, yet he has made little effort to stop it.

It seems that when certain politicians can't truthfuly say anything good about themselves the only thing they can do is go on the attack and makeup lies and halftruths or SCARE the most gullible voters into voting for them. It seems as though they are getting an early start this year.

con me not: Yeah they did start early this year. They must be worried that too many people might be too smart to believe all their BS.

If you really wanted to know about the real message, I would recommend to go to the church website and listen and make your judgment rather than watching the Ad which I think will not reflect since it spin version. I think we Americans are smarter than this.

John McCain:

Show some leadership!!!

You CANNOT have it both ways!!!

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

I dont get what is wrong with what Rev Wright said.
I actually heard the whole sermon, not a sound bite.
In case you missed it, YOUR US tax dollars paid for and trained Bin Laudin and the murderers who did 9-11.
Those are YOUR chickens, come home to roost.
Rev Wright said, "our chickens have come home to roost".
There is nothing incorrect about that statement.
The statement was made the first Sunday after 9-11 happened.

The expression is OPENING PANDORA's box. It is an old tale, but still true.
We opened the box. The monsters have flown out.
Our CIA tax dollars created this monster.
Tell me that is not "our chickens, come home to roost". Get real.

I am for Obama, but I think ad should run. People are smarter than that and know garbage when see it.

As for McCain. He did the smartest thing he could. He reinforced my view that if it's not Obama then it's him.

Shameless, "say-anything", "do-anything" Hillary has no business in White House. She'll sell us to chinese if it helps her get elected.
