McCain Opens a New Flank on Rev. Wright

ABC News’s Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain maintained Sunday that he does not approve of the political advertisement being run by the North Carolina Republican party that links his potential presidential rival Sen. Barack Obama with comments made by the Illinois Democrat's pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but at the same time brought up new comments by Wright that he says he found disturbing.

Speaking with reporters in Coral Gables, Fla., McCain, R-Ariz., said he has done all he will do to convince the North Carolina GOP to take the ad down, noting that though he himself did not call and request its removal, members of his staff did call and ask that the ad be taken down.

"I will continue to say that I think that ad should not be run," McCain said. "But I won’t continue to try to be the referee here."

McCain has said in the past that Wright’s comments should not be an issue in the campaign, because he does not think Obama subscribes to the views.

"My position that Sen. Obama doesn't share those views remains the same," McCain said Sunday.

But McCain noted that Obama said on Sunday on Fox News that Wright was an issue, seemingly opening a door for McCain to connect the Democrat to his former pastor.

"I saw yesterday some additional comments that have been revealed by Pastor Wright, one of them comparing the United States Marine Corps with Roman Legionnaires who were responsible for the death of our Savior, I mean being involved in that. It's beyond belief..." McCain said.

"I can understand why Americans, when viewing these kinds of comments, are angry and upset," McCain said.

Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan said McCain had broken his word to the American people about running a respectful campaign.

"With each passing day, John McCain acts more and more like someone who's spent twenty-six years learning the divisive, distracting tactics of Washington," Sevugan said in a written statement. "That's not the change that the American people are looking for."

What's funny is how much emphasis has been placed on a handful of associations Obama has and very little attention to the treasure chest of issues/associations Clinton has. Is this because Obama has taken the "high" road, b/c he's the front runner or something else?

I just thought that's funny.

Rev. Wright and Obama are responsible for those comments!
Obama is talking about a good judgement!
I am not sure how good his judgement be?

here's some trademark for obama when anything bad is said about him: "brush it off", "it's a distraction", & "it's division". Watch for these, it will come up over and over again from obama campaign. that will be their tactics for not answering questions or don't know how to answer questions.

Wright is like herpes. He's the gift that keeps on giving.

O.k O.k Maybe Rev. Wright was wrong in saying US government created AIDs in order to kill black people.
But it certainly used black people as guinea pigs to study the effects of syphillis on human beings!! How evil is that? and why isn't all these flag waving "patriots" in the media saying anything about that!!

Whites should really ask themselves why does Rev. Wright or blacks that express anger at foul treatment received in America scare them so much? That is what this is really about: let non-blacks treat you like scum and denigrate you, but just stay in your place and NEVER show outrage. Pretend like you love this country as if racism, Jim Crow, red lining, prejudice, and slurs never existed.

It doesn't matter how old the Rev. Wright issue is. It doesn't matter what he said about US history was actually CORRECT (look up Dr. Boyd Graves). It doesn't matter that the actual sermons were quoting another white man and are in the tradition of clergy criticizing their nations corrupt policies. MLK, Billy Graham, Rod Parsley, Pat Robertson, etc ALL criticized America for being amoral. But that isn't the point. The point is an angry black man is more terrifying to whites over 40 than any Al Queda terrorists. Some whites NEED to fell this fear of blacks to explain their sense of disconnect and superiority. That is the American way. That is why Obama has to play so nice. That is why he is the least wealthy of the candidates, but gets called an elitist. How dare he go to Harvard, make a couple of million on some books and be so clean and cool!! The audacity! Meanwhile, the world watches and laughs as an unarmed black man gets shot at 51 times. One black man is assassinated literally, one figuratively. Only in America.

I hope the world remembers this and laughs in America's face for suggestions on human rights.

The problem isn't Obama's hate-spewing pastor, it's the fact that Obama listened to the pastor for 20 years before finally rejecting him when it became politically expedient. The same is true for the unrepentant bomber that Obama hangs out with. Obama has a serious character flaw and his empty message of "change" isn't going to cover it up.

I am with Jack51.

I do not know if it hurts or help it depends on the individual, but I am happy that he is standing up for himself. I have great deal of respect for Rev Wright. I can certainly understand how the Black Community can come together around him.

Mr. Wright brought 'race' into this race and Mr. Obama actully poured oil in the fire by not denouncing Mr. Wright (not just his words) and making an attempt to be the great MLK or Lincoln by giving a peech on race.

I share the view of many in saying the issue of Rev. Wright will cause Americans to revisit old wounds and the media will be there with cameras to sensationalize the event. The truth of the matter is many in the white community would not like to see Obama (or any black man when you think about it) become president and will not own their feelings. If these folks can just admit the truth we can deal with it and have a discussion. Instead, they would rather find an issue and use that to mask their true feelings. Every step forward we make toward equality there are those who will make sure we as a people go two steps backward. Like senator Obama my hope is with the next generation who can focus on issues and reject distractions.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what McCain and the Republicans are trying to do: He is double talking and attacking Obama's character because he wants to get him out of the race for the White House because he would rather face-off with Hillary!!! Rev.Hagee has endorsed McCain; Rev. Wright has not endorsed Obama, yet McCain says he does not have the problem with this Pastor that Obama has because there is a difference. What is the difference, one is white and one is black, and if you are white you are right? Give me a brack!

Rev. Wright appeared to me a VERY DECENT MAN in Bill Moyers' interview! I unfortunately cannot say the same thing of all those that try to "demonize" him!
He is a man of religion who is entitled to express his opinion! Most of the opinions that he has expressed, I have read them in European newspapers. Some Americans do not want to hear the TRUTH! Maybe God punished American for all the wicked things that America did in the past. Read against the Bible! God punish his people for all their bad deeds! Don't blame God! He is your God! Don't blame the messenger (Rev. Wright!) either!

I keep seeing the name of John Hagee come up on this blog, trying to link
McCain to his church. He may be acquainted with the man but to my knowledge did not sit under his ministry for 20 years and has not refered to him as his spiritual mentor. There's really no comparison. Bottom line, Obama is a very soft spoken left wing radical who is closely linked to a radical racist...the Reverand Wright.

Posted by: LLADNARC | Apr 27, 2008 9:22:55 PM

WHY are more reporters not asking Obama about his poor judgement of appointing Wright as an adviser to his Presidential campaign? The press would be howling if any of the other candidates had a white pastor as an advisor who was an un-American racist. THIS MY FRIENDS is racist by our very own press.

The moral point here is the views of a want to be president is radical. The second moral point here, which is the most important is, we have yet to hear what he will do for America. He hasn't presented anything; he has caused division rather than representing the well interests of the country.

''Justinteim''. Don't mix the Lord and compare him to someone like Wright. The Lord can not be compared to any human being. In fact, the Lord is about peace, love, compassion, mercy, and righteousness. None of us are perfect to be compared to his likeness.

If your mentor of 20 years has ever declared the United States to be ‘the same as al-Qaeda, under a different color flag, calling on the name of a different God to sanction and approve our murder and our mayhem!’ you are ineligible for the presidency.

The Who: You must have been on another planet if you have not heard Obama discuss his proposed health plan for Americans, Iran etc.!!! And, if you are a Christain you must know that the Bible tells us that God will be the final judge; that we serve and worship God and not man. We can reject the messenger, but we must love him/her, according to God's Word. Some folks don't belong to or even attend a church and want to dictate to others where to worship, how to worship, and what to believe or not believe according to their man-made standards. Those who brand Rev. Wright's church a cult would KNOW one because they have expeience with a "cult" or have attended Wright's church and therefore know that they are talking about. He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone!!!
