ABC News' Jan Simmonds Reports:  In an interview with FOX News Channel's Chris Wallace, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said that he will be talking to the Secret Service as early as next week to discuss arranging their protection.

"I think that it's important as we get more and more visibility, that we recognize the inevitable," McCain said.  "And so we will be talking with them early to arrange for very soon, some secret service protection."

Yesterday at a hearing on Capitol Hill, the Secret Service acknowledged that they had not yet begun to protect the presumptive Republican Nominee.

Asked why McCain had not asked for protection yet, the Senator replied that it would "inhibit" his ability to have "close contact with people."

It's expected that Secret Service will begin having a presence around McCain in the next few weeks.

McCain spoke with Wallace at the National Civil Rights Museum today before he spoke to a crowd of several hundred in the rain at a ceremony commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The full interview is scheduled to broadcast this weekend on FOX News Sunday.

I think he realizes that in this stage of his life, he might need someone to wake him from his afternoon nap.

I think Sen. McCain owes it to the country to embrace the protections deemed appropriate by the Congress for people in his status.
