McCain Talks Veepstakes
April 02, 2008 2:28 PM
ABC News's Bret Hovell reports: Aboard the "Straight Talk Express", between Annapolis and Baltimore, the Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain talked about the early stages of his process for picking a vice president.
He said that his campaign has started to compile a list.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
"It's every name imaginable, as you might know," McCain said. When asked about his list said, "No I can't tell you who's on the list."
He characterized the list as having about twenty names on it, and said in an ideal world he'd be able to announce his pick early – before the Republican national convention.
"But it depends on the process," McCain said. "We just really haven't gotten far enough along in the whole thing to really yield, even predict what we’re doing."
McCain said he is trying to avoid mistakes that have been made in past selections, which he chalked up to the selection process being rushed.
"Like when President [George H.W.] Bush chose Dan Quayle, Dan Quayle had not been briefed and prepared for some of the questions," McCain said, noting that he is a friend of Quayle and thought he was a good Senator.
After a somewhat secretive selection process, during the 1988 presidential election Bush chose then-Sen. Dan Quayle, R-Ind., as his vice president. In choosing Quayle, Bush had hoped to woo younger voters with the telegenic 41-year-old senator though GOP strategists were skeptical of the choice.
McCain said that he has not chosen someone to head up the search just yet, and stressed that he could not talk too much about it, because the process was in such an early stage.

I like the John McCain from 2000. I haven't seen the side-by-side comparisons, but he really looks like he's aged since then (just like George Bush). I'm not going to say he is "too old" as that is silly, but the job can really age you and he has had cancer. Look at Paul Tsongas (I know, it was a different cancer) who was a great gentleman, and whose cancer recurred a few yeas after his presidential run against Bill Clinton. I think this is going to be the most important decision McCain makes and I think he knows it. I also think the democrats will have their house in order this fall and it's going to be an interesting time for our country. I also think that, finally, we won't need to choose between the "lesser of two evils" but good candidates.

Bo,
You seem like one of the Obama Zombies that is posting the same message on all the blogs, using different names for the all one of you.
This is a posting about McCain and his Vice-Presidential choice. If McCain wants a sure win he will pick Obama as his VP after Hillary knocks Obama off at the end of this long, hard fought campaign, on which she has never faltered.

With what weapon is Hillary going to knock out Obama? She is toast.
No VP pick ever influenced an election that I can think of. In the fall it will be Obama v. McCain, and the race will focus on the two of them and not on anyone else.
