McCain Twice Calls Obama 'Out of Touch'

April 27, 2008 6:51 PM

ABC News’ Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sunday, took the opportunity of a mid-afternoon press conference to twice call Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., “out of touch” on issues ranging from the economy to the values of average Americans.

McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, spoke to reporters at the swanky Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Fla., where he held a fundraiser Sunday evening.

McCain criticized Obama for not supporting McCain’s plan for a gas tax holiday, which would eliminate the 18 cents per gallon Americans pay for gasoline between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

“Obviously, Sen. Obama does not understand that this would be a nice thing for Americans,” McCain said.

He also sharply criticized Obama for saying that he was open to raising taxes on capital gains, which McCain said would affect the taxes of 100 million Americans who have investments.

“That means he has no understanding of the economy and that he is totally insensitive to the hopes and dreams and ambitions of 100 million Americans who would be affected by his almost doubling of the capital gains tax,” McCain said.

“He is out of touch with the economy.”

The second “out of touch” came when McCain, who is 71, was talking about comments Obama made a few weeks back when he described rural Pennsylvanians as “bitter.” Speaking at a fundraiser in northern California, Obama said rural Americans turn to faith and guns as a result.

“He believes that it’s out of economic concerns. We all know it’s out of a fundamental belief, a fundamental faith in this country and its values and its principles. Again, Sen. Obama, out of touch.”

McCain is somebody who is older Coca-Coca in a can and is in Washington for more than 5 decades and who is saying that Obama is out off touch, that is an insult to our intellingence. McCain has to stop saying things which are stupid. He has no understanding of Economy he said, he is twisting Obama's word, he should know better. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Oh wonderful, this so called "out of touch talk" is coming from two of the most wealthy of candidates to run this year - aside of Romney - now that is rich. Well McCain, if Obama is out of touch you were never in touch. And Hillary if Obama is elite, you must be ROYALTY (although that doesn't mean s000 in this country.)! The point is the both of them are jokes.

Even the Republican governor of California knows there is a major infrastructure problem.

Bridges, levees, and roads have been failing after being ignored for decades where only minor patches have been done.

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Illinois, Lousiana, Colorado, and many more states know that government has ignored these fixes for too long.

Communist countries also act very much like the liberal media has acted in this primary cycle.

They will stick 2 guys on the ballot, but BEHOLD one 24 hrs a day and simply mention that the other guy is running but he is an idiot and everyone hates him.

Very much the same communist routine we have seen out of this primary season.

The liberal media is so far beyond reporting the news, its basically PARTICIPATING and SHAPING the election to benefit one candidate.

Talk about disingenuous; 100 million Americans being affected by the Capital Gains Tax?

If he is talking about me and my 401K, well then he is completely out of touch, as everyone knows that income will be treated as ordinary income.

McCain out of touch.

Obama has never been in touch.

Still, Obama fans attack everything but issues preferring instead to engage in character assignations. Typical of those who adhere to an issue-bankrupt hero.

Boneheaded,.

Well I am represented by two republican senators and one republican congressman. It has been that way for over 30 years. I would have to say that they are out of touch with me.

And if you are from Chicago then I take it that Obama is out of touch with you.

So I do not know how you can say it is beyond you.

All of a sudden, McCain cares about the middle class. Ha! What's he been doing all this time in congress?

Obama (aka Soetoro) is and empty suit. The only thing that keeps him standing upright is his hot air.

Posted by: A | Apr 27, 2008 7:47:38 PM

Thinking - Too bad you do not feel your Senators and congressman do not represent you, but that is called democracy - not everyone can be satisfied with everything. If you think they are out of tough, which I have no idea whether it's true or not, you need to express your given right - vote them out of the office.

You first need to vote, and you need to convince all those who think, as you do, that they are out of touch, to vote them out, and to vote in a representative that you believe in touch with you, and more importantly, the majority of your state or your district.

If you failed this year, try harder two years from now. It is no one's fault, but your own if they stay in power and out of touch.

On the other hand, from a different perspective, and I am not a republican defending your republican congressman, if they have stayed there for 30 years, perhaps they have done something good for a majority of the people they represent.

Want to learn more about South Chicago? Just watch the news about the riot.

Of course, Obama didn't exactly live in the predominant part of his area -- he'd lived in Hyde Park with the likes of Rezko. Clearly, his social friends were different than his church friends.

Posted by: mel | Apr 27, 2008 7:55:55 PM

McCain says Obama showed that he is out of touch when he claimed rural folk cling to guns and religion because they mired in self pity and are bitter.

Hell, at least half the democrats believe that as well.

Posted by: A | Apr 27, 2008 7:58:31 PM

Thinking - Oh, one more thing; I applause those Senators and Congressmen who can bring a large amount of earmark dollars back home to their states and districts. It shows their effectiveness and "in-touch-ness" to bring federal dollars home to benefit the good people they represent. I do not see anything wrong with it. It is within the rules, and they do not need to pretend above everyone else to make their constituency suffer. If your congressmen could not do it for you, as my two useless Senators Coleman and Klobuchar who ranked among the last to bring Federal money to MN, you need to vote for a different person.

It's the war in Iraq and the Economy, Stupid!

The McCain/Obama election will be decided on those two issues.

After 8 years of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Americans will not be sidetracked or swiftboated by the Atwater/Rove script. Flag pins, bittergate, Rev. Wright, etc., will not get it done this time.

Obama is out of touch and he doesn't understand the economy. In the last debate he said he is going to increase the capital gain to 28%. He just changed his his mind to 20% of capital gain during the fox news interview. He changed his mind because a lot of wall street expert said he was wrong about this. Do you believe in him to turn around the economy?

JR, Independent, IN:
When Sen. Obama graduated from Harvard Law, he could have gone to a nice safe church having car washes and focusing on the church anniversaries or he could have gone to a controversial church that as really helping people. He could have gone to a New York law firm or he could have gone to work serving the poor people on the South side of Chicago, a scary place, I might add. This is a man that is very much in touch with the people.

His plans for the country are not something he cares to speak about. Just like his friends he tried to hide.

The changes he plans in government is not for you and me.

Notice how he only blames the government for everything.

He refuses to show any Patriotism

Obama is not smart enough to be President. The ABC debate revealed to Americans that he is a very weak candidate on all topics of importance to this country.

In answer to anyone from CNBC endorsing obama's economic plan - My God - who owns NBC? GE - who does GE do business with? Is it in their best interest to put someone in office that would support them doing business with muslim countries??????

Let's get real here!

Senator McCain, when was the last speech you gave that did not include the line: When I was a POW? You've been using that as your political saber long enough. You have been so far out of touch, not only with the country but with the people of your own state for so long you don't have any idea what this country needs. So you adopt the Bush policy agenda, and use HRC's attack points on Obama.

Disgusted in Illinois: Thank you. I am certain that if Americans really understood the so-called "Christianity" to which Obama adheres, his candidacy would be over. The problem: the media is in the tank for him at the moment. However, did you see the post I just made? Evidently, Obama is mixed up in some sort of illegal money laundering deal. That may explain why he has not released his tax returns for the time when he was in the Illinois State Senate.

John McCain is calling Obama out of touch? Just last week McCain, on a Sunday morning program with George STephanopoulos said "We don't need insurance for people with pre existing conditions, we already have something called medicaid." (medicaid, have to have less than 1500 dollars in assets, have to be a renter, usually someone after bankruptcy or major health finances) McCain is the one that is out of touch!!

Rev. Wright said today that blacks use the right side of the brain, unlike white people that use the left side of brain to think with. No wonder Africa is a mess. That means that Obama uses his right side of the brain and we are going to have a mess in our hands if he wins the presidency.

LA Times, April 27, 2008
OBAMA DONOR RECEIVED STATE GRANT

After an unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 2000, Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama faced serious financial pressure: numerous debts, limited cash and a law practice he had neglected for a year. Help arrived in early 2001 from a significant new legal client -- a longtime political supporter. Chicago entrepreneur Robert Blackwell Jr. paid Obama an $8,000-a-month retainer to give legal advice to his growing technology firm, Electronic Knowledge Interchange. It allowed Obama to supplement his $58,000 part-time state Senate salary for over a year with regular payments from Blackwell's firm that eventually totaled $112,000.
A few months after receiving his final payment from EKI, Obama sent a request on state Senate letterhead urging Illinois officials to provide a $50,000 tourism promotion grant to another Blackwell company, Killerspin.
With support from Obama, other state officials and an Obama aide who went to work part time for Killerspin, the company eventually obtained $320,000 in state grants between 2002 and 2004 to subsidize its tournaments. The day after Obama wrote his letter urging the awarding of the state funds, Obama's U.S. Senate campaign received a $1,000 donation from Blackwell.
But Obama portrays himself as a lawmaker dedicated to transparency and sensitive to even the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Recently, Obama expressed regret over a property deal with Illinois power broker Tony Rezko after Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. In an interview this spring with the Chicago Sun-Times, Obama said his regret was not just because the real estate and restaurant entrepreneur was under criminal scrutiny, but because he was "a contributor and someone doing business before the state."
Blackwell, was a political supporter and friend as well. Both men lived on Chicago's South Side. Blackwell, a savvy and successful entrepreneur, was one of the first donors to Obama's early campaigns, including the state senator's failed bid for a congressional seat in 2000. In the presidential race he is credited on Obama's website with committing to raise $100,000 to $200,000 for Obama's campaign. The monthly retainer paid by EKI was sent to the law firm that Obama was affiliated with at the time, currently known as Miner, Barnhill & Galland, where he worked part time when he wasn't tending to legislative duties. The entire EKI retainer went to Obama, who was considered "of counsel" to the firm, according to details provided to The Times by the Obama campaign and confirmed by Miner. Obama's tax returns show that he made no money from his law practice in 2000, the year of his unsuccessful run for a congressional seat. But that changed in 2001, when Obama reported $98,158 income for providing legal services. Of that, $80,000 was from Blackwell's company.

In 2002, the state senator reported $34,491 from legal services and speeches. Of that, $32,000 came from the EKI legal assignment, which ended in April 2002 by mutual agreement, as Obama ceased the practice of law and looked ahead to the possibility of running for the U.S. Senate. . Illinois ethics disclosure forms are designed to reveal possible financial conflicts by lawmakers. On disclosure forms for 2001 and 2002, Obama did not specify that EKI provided him with the bulk of the private-sector compensation he received. As was his custom, he attached a multi-page list of all the law firm's clients, which included EKI among hundreds. Illinois law does not require more specific disclosure. Though Obama's formal efforts for Killerspin consisted of writing a letter and a proclamation, the nitty-gritty of obtaining state grants fell to a former state Senate and campaign aide to Obama, Dan Shomon.

Shomon, working part time for Obama's campaign and for Killerspin, helped prepare Killerspin's initial grant application in 2002. Still working part time with Obama, Shomon helped Killerspin secure a $200,000 grant for its 2003 tournament and a $100,000 grant for its 2004 tournament.

Gas holiday will be nice. Since when Obam oppoes it when he was for it while in IL senate?

BKMC,
I agree with about 85% of what you said. McCain himself is out of touch, but he has handlers that have correctly defined Obama as being out of touch. Maybe he's twisting Obama's words, maybe not, but Obama is indeed out-of-touch. I still believe he is an elitist but I think he's learning to eat some humble pie along the way, so I think he may end up as an OK Vice-Presidential candidate.

Hahaha. . and now we get the infamous Republican hypocrisy at work - that "don't look at us - look at anything else." John McCain, who dumped his first wife after smelling money with the second, has been jetting around the country on her private plane doing his campaign. He's spent most of his life on the public dole for his health insurance, something the rest of us don't get at all, hasn't held much of a job (except for his second wife's daddy's company) outside of the military and Congress, and probably can't remember the last time he had to write a resume or interview for a job outside government.

And this clown expects the country to believe HE is in touch - especially when his own party racks up the bennies for failed CEOs and engineers bailouts for Wall Street, while ignoring the poor and people losing their homes? Oh yeah. . .he's a real straight talker all right - unless someone asks him about his real connection with the poor. Maybe they can catch him sometime at one of his eight homes.

needs to be more thoroughly investigated...

Sure enough, Kitty...as soon as we get to thoroughly investigate the Moonies and their ties to the Republican Party.

Present Votes Are Common In Illinois - LIAR, they are common for YOU, but not many others have 130 NO VOTES.
----------------------------------

You need to try harder with that smear listing. We really don't consider it patriotic for conservatives to make up information any longer. You see, the country has some serious problems - and it doesn't have time to entertain schoolyard bullies any longer running the show.

Posted by: kevinbgoode | Apr 28, 2008 12:42:27 AM

Well James...then I think Rev. Moon is an issue - except the networks seem to be wary about reporting his influence in the Republican Party. Care to share some of your research into this cult?

Posted by: kevinbgoode | Apr 28, 2008 12:44:06 AM

Michigan and Florida resents him. How can he win by giving such a present of two states to McCain. Should the country be decided by young voters who bases their decision on emotion rather than substance?

-----------------------------------

Stop with the nonsense. Michigan and Florida KNEW they were going to be excluded - and if they were bothered, they had plenty of time to open their mouths before their state legislature and state party scheduled those primaries. Surely they understood why there wasn't anyone on the ballot, didn't they?

If they are stupid enough to vote for McCain, they can enjoy another four years of economic turmoil - and Michigan can hardly afford to further help the slide into becoming the Mississippi of the North.

By the way, Hillary agreed to those rules. Well, until she decided to disagree. Now that's just what we need - another honest politician.

Posted by: kevinbgoode | Apr 28, 2008 12:47:19 AM

So McCain claims that Obama is helping special interests by not suspending the gas tax. For a man who admits to knowing NOTHING about the economy, I thought he at least knew a little about supply and demand. When you cut the price of gas, you actually SELL MORE GAS, which HELPS the oil companies. Of course such simple pricing theory must be too hard for him to comprehend. A well-decorated soldier? Sure. But does anyone really think he has half the intelligence necessary to run an entire country? I doubt it.

God forbid Obama gets the nomination... We will be screwed!

Posted by: DMK | Apr 28, 2008 5:39:45 AM

Here's what Obama actually said about small town Pennsylvania: "You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Anyone who reads or hears Obama’s comments and see it as elitist are the same people who are looking for a reason to not vote for him in the first place. Obama’s message was clear: When you can’t rely on anything else, you have God, family, and personal values that you cling on. Those of us who actually practice religion, attend services, and live our lives accordingly know that to be the truth. When man fails you, God is always there, and when this administration has increased our burdens and especially those of the middle class, working class, and poor, what do you expect people to cling to? When we are depressed, angry, and yes bitter, we turn to God, family, and our personal values and beliefs.

Posted by: Kaelinda | Apr 28, 2008 6:04:56 AM

Oh my...ABC is it not good journalism to ask McCain how 100 million Americans will be affected by the Capital gain tax on profit. Hillary and McCain are saying the same thing to have a gas holiday. I wonder who will pay for it? Tax the oil companies, reduce American dependency on oil, use up the reserve but to declare a tax holiday is economic suicide and prove that McCain and his wife that is worth $100Million is clearly out of touch with the ordinary American people.

Posted by: dorrett | Apr 28, 2008 9:00:49 AM

McCain remark about Obama not caring about the poors it joke! The GOP have done NOTHING to help the middleclass and poors in the last 8 years! The cost of living has never been this bad , it got this way in the past 5 years , and Bush is the blame!! His war has put more troops in the grave ,over 4,000! The cost of oil has driven up the price of everything . food , heating home etc!
If McCain win in NOV. this country will be in the another depression , just like the one our folks when though!

If being patriotic means supporting the status quo, then I'm unpatriotic. Go Obama, you are abreath of fresh air in a place so politically corrupt that going after the greed in the industrial military
industry will make you many enemies, but your heart is in the right placea and you speak for the common people. Obama is our only hope.

Call it out of touch, or whatever.

The continued, public, Wright influence on Obama has spelled doom for any potential he may have had.

Consider the latest AP poll:

"The survey released Monday gives Clinton a fresh talking point as she works to convince pivotal undecided superdelegates to side with her in the drawn-out Democratic primary fight.

Clinton, who won the Pennsylvania primary last week, has gained ground this month in a hypothetical head-to-head match up with the GOP nominee-in-waiting; she now leads McCain, 50 percent to 41 percent, while Obama remains virtually tied with McCain, 46 percent to 44 percent."
