Michelle Obama Defends Her Candidate

Share

April 15, 2008 5:08 PM

ABC News' David Chalian Reports:  Michelle Obama pushed back against the notion that her husband is elite and out of touch while campaigning in Haverford, PA today.  The potential First Lady ignored any reference to the more controversial portion of Sen. Obama's remarks about people in small towns clinging to religion, guns, or anti-immigrant sentiment as an outlet from their economic frustration.

Before listing a litany of economic burdens on middle class voters -- mortgage payment, rent, car note, gas, groceries -- Mrs. Obama sarcastically told the sizeable crowd at Haverford College, "Maybe I'm missing something.  Maybe I'm out of touch."  She then administered a pregnant pause for effect.

Attempting to further demonstrate her husband's regular guy credentials, Mrs. Obama told the college student crowd that the Obamas have just paid off their student loans a few years ago.  "Now when is the last time you've seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt?  But, then again, maybe I'm out of touch," she repeated.

Perhaps Mrs. Obama was test-driving some of her newsy and sarcastic wit in advance of her taping an appearance on The Colbert Report set to air this evening on Comedy Central.

Michelle seems to think that paying back loans is a punishment.

Elitism is an attitude not always about money.

The fact that she can't understand why people would be upset by BO's comments prove that yeah, maybe she IS out of touch. Adding sarcasm to insults won't help much. Refer to the first rule of holes.

"Michelle seems to think that paying back loans is a punishment."

No, of course not, it's a blessing. hahaha

The queen of bitter adds more insult to injury. Yes Michele, you are bitter and out of touch. Your school loans don't compare with what other Americans are suffering, and yet, most of us aren't bitter. As you and Barrack lounge in your 1.65 Million mansion in Chicago that indicted felon Tony Rezko helped you purchase, we'll vote for Hillary.

Personally, I want a first lady who has enough sense to pay off her loans as soon as she can in order to save some money down the road.

The fact that she's admitting to just recently paying off her student loans proves she just doesn't get that simple math.

"Now when is the last time you've seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt? But, then again, maybe I'm out of touch," she repeated.

Yes I believe you are out of touch and I can't believe it took you this long to pay them off when you were making 200K plus a year for over 10 years now between you.

Michelle already sees herself as First Lady, and is swaggering around the campaign trail like Obama can't be beat. I hope, hope, hope, by November, people see the true colors of the Obama power couple and vote for someone else---anyone else!

Mrs. Obama seems to think that having to pay a loan makes her more in touch with the common folk.

"Now when is the last time you've seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt? But, then again, maybe I'm out of touch," she repeated.

That's because most presidential candidates take some time in life and career to gain experience and wisdom before running.

This whole "obama was so poor" thing is really offensive. They've had money for a while and have the attitude of "new money" people. Snobby and condescending. Especially her.

Professional victims...

Hey ABC and Mrs. Obama,

Since when are mortgage payments, a car note, groceries, gas, rent, etc. economic burdens?

Most of use out here in the real world think of these things as "life".

More of us think of these things as responsibilities.

Even more of us think of these things as living the American dream, or stepping stones towards that dream - not burdens.

Yeah, your right.

You are out of touch.

From the article:

"Now when is the last time you've seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt?"

My understanding is that student loans have 10-year terms--at least mine did. She's been out of law school since the late 1980s, so her student loans should have been paid off in the late 1990s. He's been out of law school since 1993, so his student loans should have been paid off about five years ago or so.

With regard to her quote, does she want a medal for repaying an obligation? Does she want a medal because he decided to go back to law school at age 29? What are we to do with that information?

Unfortunately, Clinton blew a golden opportunity. The Obamas are not economic elitists, but they are intellectual elitists. The problem is that they are probably the dumbest smart people in the country.

Silent Majority, it's time to start weighing in.

She is clinging to her bitterness...
------

She was making $350,000 a year and she tries to act like she is from the middle class...???
Their combined income was over $1 MILLION last year and she thinks she is middle class American?

The good news is that Obama will crush Hillary and, hopefully, we will get rid of the classless Clintons. Even better news: McCain will crush Obama, and send him and his spoiled brat wife back to Chicago. The bad news: it can't happen fast enough and we have to listen to these two idiot Democrats whine, lie, parse, and spin for a few more months.

Mrs. Obama is another reason why Her husband shouldn't be president. She has no idea. As a veteran I should wouldn't want Obama OR clinton as the commander in chief of our armed forces, geez what a disaster that would be. Obama is not a good patriot and clinton has no respect for the military, just look back on how she treated them when she was first lady. GO MCCAIN!!!!

How is the government that can't put up a border fence supposed to create a job?

Posted by: eric | Apr 15, 2008 7:27:49 PM

The bottom line is that if obama or hillary get elected this country will slowly sink toward socialism and that is a slippery slope to recover from. I certainly dont want most of my paycheck go toward the goverment running every aspect of our life. I also like the idea of starting up my own business so I can have an opportunity to make alot of money and more jobs for the economy. They just dont get that and it is starting to make me sick...oh and the things that come out of Michelles Mouth sound like they are coming from Karl Marx himself...scary stuff

Don,
We're conservative (Classical Liberals), that means that we don't think anyone owes us anything that we haven't worked for. Believing that the world/government owes you something is what the neo-libs, like possibly yourself, believe. What I find condescending in BHO's comments is that we're cynical about the government. Of course we are, we're all supposed to be. Our founding fathers were cynical about government. And, for a very good reasons. BHO believes cynicism about the goverenment is bad because he believes that the goverment is supposed to provide all sorts of entitlements to people who have NOT worked for them (by stealing from the folks who are productive). Except for the unborn, of course. They are denied life, liberty, etc. Apparently--since they're--punishment, they're not "entitled" to oxygen.
