Michelle Obama Defends Her Candidate
April 15, 2008 5:08 PM
ABC News' David Chalian Reports: Michelle Obama pushed back against the notion that her husband is elite and out of touch while campaigning in Haverford, PA today. The potential First Lady ignored any reference to the more controversial portion of Sen. Obama's remarks about people in small towns clinging to religion, guns, or anti-immigrant sentiment as an outlet from their economic frustration.
Before listing a litany of economic burdens on middle class voters -- mortgage payment, rent, car note, gas, groceries -- Mrs. Obama sarcastically told the sizeable crowd at Haverford College, "Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I'm out of touch." She then administered a pregnant pause for effect.
Attempting to further demonstrate her husband's regular guy credentials, Mrs. Obama told the college student crowd that the Obamas have just paid off their student loans a few years ago. "Now when is the last time you've seen a president of the United States who just paid off his loan debt? But, then again, maybe I'm out of touch," she repeated.
Perhaps Mrs. Obama was test-driving some of her newsy and sarcastic wit in advance of her taping an appearance on The Colbert Report set to air this evening on Comedy Central.

The only problem with your reasoning is that those productive people aren't productive without somebody doing the dirty work. Who's going drive these productive people around in their limos when all the drivers died of curable dieases. Who are you going to hire to do sales when they are all starving because of know money to buy food. Obama is right people need a level playing field. A job is not a handout and any body who says otherwise has never worked a day in his life. When you think about these productive rich people, they should be caring enough to give a little to help others out. That why America is called the Land of Opprotunity.
And another thing, people do get punished with babies. I met one person who had a daughter who got pregnant in High school. The parents made her deliver the baby, tied her tubes, and force her to raise the baby. The issue of Abortion should be handled like gambling. If you do it then you alone have to answer to God at the pearly gates.

Do the Obamas have a mortgage or did they give Rezko cash?

MM, I agree with what you are saying. You're very logical and not talking with your emotions. I will support whoever the dem canidate is. But I hate all this mud slinging especially when some have no idea what they are talking about.

Man, this woman is OBSESSED with her student loan payments. Talk about Bitter.
I suppose she thinks the taxpayers should have funded her expensive education?

I think Obama biggest strength is he is not attached to Washington. He's probably more attach to Chicago then Washington. That allows him the freedom to be an outsider looking in from a different perspective. He will be different then Kennedy but I believe he will mobilize people like Kennedy did. The flip side is experience, but Obama makes for it with State government and public service experience.
Politicans become out of touch when they have been the political machinery too long. McCain and Hillary are excellent examples. I think Hillary already had a couple of character flaws, and politics amplified that. I believe McCain has a high moral standard but over the years politics has worn and beaten him down until he can't speak his mind anymore.
America needs somebody to fix our politics. If we fix the politics, then things will get done. Politics is necessary in all governments, and it works as the conveyor belt of ideas for the government. When our politics are broken, no one communicates, everyone plays the blame game instead of coming up with a meaningful solution. That's why I think we need a third party so two get out a control another steps in takes power and keeps the other two in check. Sort of like how are government is literally run.

Student loans are a killer. Obama understood this and got into the minds of parents and college students that are footing the bill. I have scholarships and still have take at least $10,000 a year in loans. There should be a serious reform in education, and how it is funded. I think they should increase R&D spending and take the money from the military. Because that how we got the Engine, the integrated circuit, and so many nifty items. I like his Infrastructure plan because it will put people to work. Check history, how did the country get out of the Great Depression. The government put them to work. There were no handouts, there were public works. Look at Chicago has an example. Mayor Daley put people to work fixing the Dan Ryan to put money into the Chicago work force. Today Chicago has the biggest service industry in the country.

Or perhaps she's an obnoxious, angry, self-absorbed Hyde Park yuppie, with an affirmative action Ivy League pedigree.

The Other.....abortion is legal, remember. That is between you and God. And my logic is just fine thank you

Bishop,
Good point.

MM - one of the reasons that College is so expensive is that government is involded in funding part of it. When government money subsidizes something, the cost goes up.

I like Michelle. She doesn’t parse her words or select them with an antenna for political correctness.
She doesn't act like a stepford wife either, like picture perfect Cindy McCain. I wonder if Michelle will ever run for president in the future, Hilary is.

Michelle claiming to be middle class clearly shows how out of touch and uneducated she really is. People with degrees are not always educated - just like Bush.

Well I recently just moved out of a small town. Long story short, I see where the Obamas are coming from when they state their comments about small towns, and I regret to inform you all that they are bitter-sweetly correct. I support Michelle's statements.

Michelle Obama's speech today was one of the BEST I have ever heard. She was genuine, sincere, and hit the nail on the head with all of her comments.
For those of you who think she is condescending, have you actually *heard* her speak, or are you relying on biased blogs and first impressions? It is often difficult to detect somebody's tone in print form, and this can (and, on this blog, apparently did) lead to misinterpretation.

Veritas, I am a dem and will vote for a dem in the general election no matter who it is. And i did not make a hypocritical post. I have not dished anything out. But reading this blog you Hillary supporters really scare me.

Actually, I have heard her speak. I think she'd make one very entertaining 1st Lady. Never a dull moment. I think her husband would make one very scary President. He thinks there is a big government solution for every problem. Unfortunately, government just seems to mess everything up. (see above - Gov't prolongs Great Depression by 7 years)!

Michelle is in touch. And she is a very entertaining and intelligent woman I might add. I support whatever she might state politically or religiously because she and her husband are really good people. Go Obamas!

I think Obama will win over McCain in the GE
Posted by: moe | Apr 15, 2008 11:49:21 PM
Obamas will say antyhing, matters or not matter, to deceive the voters. He has not had a single original idea of domestic and foreign affairs policies. He is alway, however, smart to say "me too" or "I agree with you, Senator".
