N.C. GOP Refutes McCain Adviser on Wright Ad

ABC News' Bret Hovell, Tahman Bradley and Teddy Davis Report: The North Carolina Republican Party is going forward with plans to air a controversial ad featuring the Rev. Jeremiah Wright despite a Thursday claim by a senior McCain adviser that the ad would not air.

"I don't know where this is coming from but this ad is scheduled to go on the air early next week as we have always said," Brent Woodcox, a spokesman for the North Carolina GOP, told ABC News.

Charlie Black, a top adviser to Arizona Sen. John McCain, maintained Thursday to ABC News and Time Magazine that the North Carolina Republican Party was not going to air its controversial ad.

"The ad has been pulled. I don’t think it ever ran, except on the web," Black told Time.

The ad links Wright to two North Carolina Democrats running for governor who have endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Asked about Black's claim, Woodcox checked with North Carolina Republican Party Chair Linda Daves and said the senior McCain adviser's claim was unfounded.

Told of the North Carolina Republican Party's plans to go forward with the ad, Black backed off the claim, saying that he is now hearing conflicting reports.

Earlier Thursday while campaigning in New Orleans, McCain himself addressed the ad.

"I cannot dictate to the [North Carolina Republican] Party what their message is," said McCain. "But I can condemn it. I have no further options. I cannot impose my will on people who are the elected leaders of their own party."

Watch the ad, which is set to begin airing Tuesday, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXxkctYRAZQ.

Can bush fire a republican governor? Does bush have authority over them.

Of course not.

The governors are elected at the state level.

They are elected locally. Same thing with North Carolina GOP.

McCain can't fire officialsl who are elected at the state level.

If you are going to hold McCain to this standard why didn't you ask Bill Clinton to fire democratic governors when they did something wrong during his presidency.

Because he couldn't. It is against the constitution.

McCain has no juristiction over officials who are elected locally. The constitution says so.

Federal vs state.

This whole guilt by association is idiotic and food for the ignorant. If the behavior and character of one person reflects on another just because they associate with each other, we ALL have to plead guilty to that one. All these people who point their fingers at any candidate for this is an ignorant fool. How many of you have known or associated with somebody throughout your life that has said or done some shameful things? Get over the BS distractions that both parties are using and get as passionate about the issues as you are about this crap. Answer this, HOW does it affect me or the people I care about? Use that as your measuring stick of importance. Or here is another crazy thought, how about measuring a persons character by examining THEIR character. Get a grip people!

As a Independent I have absolutely no party loyalty because no party deserves it IMHO. If Obama is nominated, I will vote for Obama. If Hillary is nominated, then I will vote for the old guy. In fact I would vote for Paster Wright before I voted for Hillary. When will you dems get it? Outside of your party, no one likes Hillary lol!

how can you judge a person's character other than by their actions and their associates? You can't read inside their heads and you can't simply take everyone (especially a politician, LOL) at his/her word.

McCain is loving the fact that he don't have to take responsibility for the Rep. attack ad airing in N.C. against Obama and I don't believe McCain at all.
And his first visit to New Orleans. He don't deserve to walk on their ground!
It is a little late. His priority was a trip across the world to raise money from a dinner "fundraiser" in Paris with
his cronie frieds Liberman and Graham paid for with taxpayer money. What a phony.

govtDr - there are many flaws to your logic. Using your logic, if a corrupt police officer is working at a station then everyone else working there is just as corrupt? Or you yourself think and believe in exactly the same things as everyone you associate with? No disagreements ever? Be realistic and truthfull with yourself and you will see that these are nothing but distrations from the real issues. Judge someone's character by the actions of their associates (especially politicians) and you ignorantly assume that everyone is as good as the worst of them. So if one politician is corrupt then they all are according to your logic.

I read the post of Rev. Wrights sermon and yes I am still offended. He called white folks shady and that we would not vote for a black person for president, and that it is OK to vote for someone who is not your color (directed to the whites I assume, as he seems to have issues with blacks voting for whites??) Rev. Wright sounds racists to me, I would love to see what would be said of a white person saying all of this about black people, thanks for letting me read his complete offensive sermon!!

Tomdavie

How bout this...Obama has more popular votes and delegate votes...uh i think that means he's winning.

Posted by: Cathy | Apr 24, 2008 6:45:27 PM

I'm a North Carolinian and proudly wearing my "I Voted" sticker right now as I'm typing this. I voted two hours ago and I proudly voted for the person I feel is the most intelligent, able to use reason rather than reaction, will lead this country in a favorable direction for the next 4 and possible 8 years, and will bring harmony, integrity, honesty and candor back into our government. That person is non other than Barack Obama. And I'm white and over 65!

Obama will wipe me out financially with his 40% dividend tax mostly, but also when I go to sell my house his 28% capital gains will ruin me. Plus he wants a global tax, carbon tax, fuel tax, estate tax, and a national real estate tax, his corporate taxes will drive daily living costs through the roof, and that doesn't even include his income taxes! At $30K/year I would pay $4,900 more per year under an obama regime! http://www.blogatroid.com/taxes2008.htm
Obama's been constantly evasive about how he'd pay for his 1.13 trillion in global giveaways and an eXTRA 50billion in domestic wasteful spending.

obama is the only candidate who refuses to stop making sense or start streams of meaningless rhetoric. he alone has shown good judgement on issues such as the iraq resolution that hillary helped to deliver to the white house. he makes a good point that experienced folks like cheney and rumsfeld have been a living breathing nightmare for this country. if we have one more status quo president in office, it wont matter who we elect anymore. power will very soon be too consolidated for the american citizenry to hold its government accountable for anything... assuming it hasnt crossed that line already

I think it is sad that the American people find it so easy to attack each other on any subject. Although our great nation was founded on freedom of speech the almost steady stream of attacks on each other is what makes America seem weak to outsiders. The truth is that the common man does not go around bashing other races most Americans in fact are just trying to get by from day-to-day. If you live separated from other races, most of the time it is because you are born in to a community that is segregated. Most common People do not care what others are doing it is the extreme bigots like Reverend Wright that some how rise to power that give racist power he is no different than a K.K.K leader. All people after all are clear sprits in the eyes of God.

Obama is unelectable, he has been tainted by the hateful, racist, teachings of his spiritual advisor. As a typical White Person I cant bring myself to vote for some one who thinks I am whats wrong with the world because of the color of my skin. Rev Wright is a Racist no matter how you spin it.

Betty says ' I hope the ads in North Carolina make african americans angry so it helps Obama'

I got news for you betty. African americans have already cast their racist 90% vote for Obama and it aint changing anytime soon NO MATTER WHAT happens.

So the ads will only annoy WHITE voters into voting for CLINTON.

Posted by: tomdavie | Apr 24, 2008 7:00:31 PM

preachers are cult leaders, no matter what cult, aka religion, they represent. its little use holding rev wright or any other cultist up to such high standards, and little point in condemning their entire congregations...........

Posted by: peabody3000 | Apr 24, 2008 7:05:01 PM

If John McCain has no influence on members of his own party, how do we expect him to have influence over other world leaders. Is he spineless probably so. What makes this ad particularly offensive is that it involves smearing two people who have endorsed Obama. Is this the message of the Republican Party. McCarthyism. ?

Posted by: Ron | Apr 24, 2008 7:09:44 PM

What kind of a reply is: "...I cannot impose my will on people who are the elected leaders of their own party." Is this not his party too? If he is running for President; what does this say about his ability or inability to persuade other members of our government, or the voters as to why he should even be an elected official??? Why isn't the media all over this type of racist perversion by the GOP. Why is race an issue in this the year 2008? And finally why isn't there a louder cry for removing this woman from her post? This is a very sad day for America.
