Norquist: Rice Making Right VP Moves

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Sarah Baker Report: Grover Norquist, the anti-tax activist who leads an influential weekly meeting of conservatives, said Tuesday that Secretary of State Condi Rice is making the right moves if she wants to be Sen. John McCain's, R-Ariz., vice presidential running mate.

"Is she campaigning for it? I don't know," Norquist told the washingtonpost.com. "But if she is, she's doing it the right way."

Norquist told The Post that Rice "would be "a great president." And, yes, a "great vice president."

Buzz about Rice joining John McCain on the Republican ticket was stirred up on Sunday by comments Dan Senor made on the  roundtable of ABC News' "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack sought to downplay Rice's first visit to Norquist's meeting by saying Monday: "if she's actively seeking the vice presidency, then she's the last one to know about it."

With the blessing from Norquist, Rice may be able to demonstrate to McCain that she has the support of not only national security conservatives but also economic conservatives.

Despite those assets, significant hurdles remain for Rice becoming the first female on a national Republican ticket.

Having previously indicated that she is somewhat supportive of abortion rights, a Rice pick may be hard for social conservatives to embrace.

With his own history of less than enthusiastic relations with religious conservatives, McCain may want a running mate with strong ties to values voters.

An additional hurdle to Rice joining the GOP ticket is that she could make it easier for Democrats to paint McCain as representing a continuation of President Bush's policies. Rice, after all, has been a close Bush confidant throughout his presidency and she has been criticized for running an insular information flow in the run-up to the Iraq war when she served as National Security Advisor.

Senor, who backs Rice for VP, sought to rebut the claim that Rice is too close to Bush by saying that Democrats are going to make that argument anyway and that McCain is better off doubling down on the experience advantage that he enjoys over Democratic frontrunner Barack Obama.

Norquist, made his comments about Rice to The Sleuth, a washingtonpost.com column by Mary Ann Akers.

Who wants the endorsement of hippocrates. When he was out of power, Grover lambasted the majorities in congress for wasteful spending; Now with his boys in charge, they've added an explosion of domestic spending, on top of adding tax cuts to "starve the beast" of big government. This double-barrell, two-fited drunken spending binge is destroying our economy. So when Grover says that Rice is "his girl" for the job, forgive me if I shudder at the very thought. Grover is an opportunistic, greedy, hippocrate who has grown to love big government as long as he gets his cut. One would do well to ignore him completely.

Oh my Lord! That would be McCain's biggest mistake. We don't want anyone so closely associated with Bush to remain in the cabinet, let alone become VP. If he does choose her, he might as well admit defeat now!

You people (republicans), have me confused. I thought you liked the present regime and wanted to keep the status quo. So are you saying that Bush is not favored at all by you and you want no parts of him? OR Is it because Rice is a black woman. Oops

If McCain picks Condi he might as well legally change his name to McBush and just be done with it.

I sure hope McCain does not pick RICE.

That would be like having Obama on both tickets.

That would leave me with voting for Nadar or something.

I'm curious as to her other policy stances especially domestic issues. I have reservations too, but let's hear her out... in fact let's hear them all. Let all the VEEP wanabe's start stumping for our confidence... Mac will ultimately decide, but it would good pick someone vetted by the media and public. Let the Veepstakes begin!

McCain and Charlie Christ would appeal to the religious, right?

Or is that Crist? Jeez... Anyway, he's certainly not Wright, right?

Wright did Obama wrong, which wasn't right. But Wright knows his rights, but that will infuriate the right, and Barack will have to fight for his right to support Wright.

McCain would pick Rice in a minute. Minute Rice? Perhaps, but not in stature or intellect.

The Clintons? Their relevancy has become irrelevant. Is that irreverent? Ask Reverend Wright about unasked-for relevancy.
