Obama Condemns Wright's Defense

April 29, 2008 2:34 PM

ABC News' Ed O'Keefe Reports: Sen. Barack Obama strongly condemned recent comments made by his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, in a high-stakes gamble by his campaign to control a spreading political firestorm.

Reacting to what he called the "spectacle" of his former pastor at the National Press Club, Obama, D-Ill., denounced Wright saying, "What Rev. Wright said yesterday directly contradicts everything I have ever done or said in my life."

"Whatever relationship I had with Rev Wright has changed as a result of this," Obama said.

Speaking the National Press Club in Washington on Monday, Rev. Wright called the recent criticism surrounding his sermons "an attack on the black church".

"This is not about Obama, McCain, Hillary, Bill or Chelsea, this is about the black church," Wright said, speaking before an enthusiastic audience of black church leaders at the onset of a two-day symposium.

Throughout his speech and a subsequent question and answer session, Wright defiantly argued that many of his critics had not heard his whole sermons and that the media had twisted his words.

Wright vigorously defended himself against accusations he is unpatriotic but in Washington, he went on to compare U.S. troops to the Roman legions that killed Christ, to praise Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farakhan, and to suggest that the AIDS epidemic was a racist plot.

The Reverend also said he was quoting a previous U.S. Ambassador to Iraq when he said African Americans should sing "God damn America" not "God Bless America" in his first sermon following the 9/11 attacks.

"You cannot do terrorism on other people and not expect it to come back on you," Wright said on Monday. "Those are Biblical principles, not Jeremiah Wright 'bombastic' principles."

Obama came out forcefully on Tuesday, insisting he was "disappointed" by Wright, and rejecting his one-time pastor's assertion that the controversy was an attack on the black church.

The candidate went considerably further than he has in the past in distancing himself from Wright, accusing him of "insensitivity and outrageousness" in his Monday appearance at the National Press Club in Washington.

"The person I saw yesterday was not the person I met 20 years ago," Obama said.

Wright has been Obama's pastor since the Illinois Democrat joined the church.  He performed Obama's marriage ceremony and baptized the candidate's two daughters.

At a speech last month in Philadelphia, Obama made clear that while he disagreed with some of the sentiments Wright espoused in sermons, he would not "disown" a man he considered to be "like family to me."

"He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children," Obama said in that speech. "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother -- a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe."

Obama did not say if would stop attending Trinity United Church of Christ on the South Side of Chicago. A new pastor, the Rev. Otis Moss, recently took over for Wright, after Wright's retirement from the pulpit.

The reaction was much stronger than what Obama offered the previous day and reflects a decision by the Obama campaign to try to directly confront the comments by Wright, after weeks where Obama tried to perform a more delicate dance where he distanced himself from the message but not the messenger.

"I have said before and I will repeat again that some of the comments that Reverend Wright has made offend me and I understand why they've offended the American people," Obama told reporters hastily gathered for an impromptu press conference on the tarmac in Wilmington, N.C.

"He does not speak for me. He does not speak for the campaign and so he may make statements in the future that don't reflect my values or concerns," Obama continued, later adding with a smile, "I think certainly what the last three days indicate is that we're not coordinating with him."

Clearly the Obama camp deemed that effort not enough and the decision to speak out again seems designed to quell concerns among Democrats -- including superdelegates -- about some of Wright's more inflammatory remarks.

But it also raises additional questions for Obama -- including why he maintained a 20-year spiritual relationship with Wright, and why he chose not to denounce Wright when the story first spread six weeks ago.

ABC News' Rick Klein, Sunlen Miller, Jake Tapper, Nitya Venkataraman, and David Wright contributed to this report.

Oh please – you sat in his church for 20 years ….he conducted your wedding ceremony…..baptized your daughters….you prayed with him the day you announced your Presidential campaign (although you knew enough about him to disinvite him from the announcement)

We thought you were running on your ability to bring people together – yet you condoned Rev Wright’s divisive anti-Semitic remarks for 20 years

We thought you were running on change– yet you did NOTHING to change Reverend Wright’s warped views of our country

We thought you were running on judgment – yet you brought your daughters to this lunatic’s church

Hillary or NOBODY in 08!

He say this is a new wright, yet at the very least he saw all those snippets and so he new what wright was like. i mean come ON.....he knew. obama lies. obama has been with that church for 20 years.

also obama says in his book wright was his spiritual advisor.

LIES LIES LIES!!!!

Obama has now proven himself to be just another politician. I was wondering when he'd choose the fame of the presidency over his "uncle".

I don't think the Wright issue is behind him or ever will be. Now for sure, Wright won't keep his mouth shut and we may be learning more about Obama in the next few days.

Posted by: Belle | Apr 29, 2008 2:38:34 PM

Did obama just lose the black support? Mainly the other black people that support Wright?

Obama is a hypocrit anyways. He lost my vote whne he threw his grandma under the bus with Wright and now is selling that speech to his supporters as something historic like, it united the black nation.

He's a weakling that's worst than the typical politician.

Obama is a Liar, Hillary 08!

Thank you Obama! I knew you were being linked to someone who is a raging egomaniac.

This is the tough Obama I want to see!

Obama is just not a strong enough person to quill this kind of stuff. Now he is sating that he was only his pastor who married Obama and his wife and baptized his children but in his race speech - I may be wrong but didn't Obama say that Wright was like an "uncle". Obama is a typical politican and states that he runs a clean campaign but his ads in PA against HRC were pretty nasty

pastor wright tell us more about yo church member now!

Posted by: pw | Apr 29, 2008 2:41:33 PM

He is outraged now because it is affecting his polling #'s. He did not care that Americans have been outraged for weeks. He would not denouce the man before but now that it is hurting his #'s he is throwing him under the bus.

Question - Wright was never his Spiritual Advisor? Is that true? I thought Obama had said in the past he was or it was in his book...does anyone know?

Obamanaics -- come on lets get the spin going!!!

I am outraged by Wright & Obama both. He said in the pews for 20 years and never heard those sermons - yeah right !!!!

I saved the web page that shows wright as the official spiritual advisor of the obama campaign. OMG. wright is right, obama does what he does for politics. 20 year relationship and he didn't know? lol

Posted by: al | Apr 29, 2008 2:44:11 PM

Wow. I am truly shocked - I NEVER saw this coming. After he didn't denounce him when the first issues came out. I thought he never would.

Posted by: McEnglish | Apr 29, 2008 2:44:36 PM

He buried the issue professionally. That speak to his leadership skills. What judgement is better than taking us to an unjust war or giving summer holliday that will save you $28 the whole summer without changing the problem of gas prices or dependence. Let is get to the real debate.

Posted by: james | Apr 29, 2008 2:45:38 PM

does obammma really believe he should be anything after this growing spectaclehe & rev wright hatched up.

Posted by: pw | Apr 29, 2008 2:45:50 PM

Obama too little too late, you must to have finally figured out that Rev Wright is one of your biggest liabilities. This something a lot of people have been talking about for weeks but you brushed it aside as unimportant. You are just sinking in your own hole that you created.

Posted by: Persio | Apr 29, 2008 2:46:47 PM

Again! He gets smoked out and has to justify his 'boneheaded' associations. When are we going to learn? He is not ready to be our next president. Now I can see the real damage that Bush has done. We are just too 'desperate' to elect someone else but PLEASE put more thought before you cast a vote.

Posted by: josh | Apr 29, 2008 2:46:52 PM

I love how Obama tries to pretend it was 20 years ago when he last met Wright. Isn't this the same Wright that he prayed with last year before his announcement that he disinvited Wright to give?

my lord what a mess?

Posted by: pw | Apr 29, 2008 2:47:37 PM

Thank you Senator Obama for finally putting this man in his place. He massive ego isa causig him to derail your entire campaign and AMERICA really needs you.

I wonder how much money the Republicans paid him.

Rev. Wright does NOt speak for the black church. He speaks for himself.
Anyone who holds Barak Obama 'sacoountable for his Pastor's teaching and beliefs are just idoits anyway.

Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Clinton are the biggest bunch of liars out there. All of you who say that he has known the guy for 20 years etc... give me a break. The problem with the world and our govt is that ANY politican will say anythign to get elected but, once in office things change. Sniper fire and her life was in danger yeah right Hillary never lies either

Posted by: CWagner | Apr 29, 2008 2:50:15 PM

It is funny that people question Obama for "staying" with a pastor for 20 years. A pastor who seems to be off his rocker. But no one is questioning why Hillary would stay with a man that cheated on her and disrespected her. Interesting spin in my opinion.

Posted by: marie | Apr 29, 2008 2:50:23 PM

Good job Barack! You listened to your people and cut the dead weight. We can sympathize with you on your loss because we feel the same way about Bill Clinton...A once great man whose time has past...WHEN WILL HILLARY DENOUNCE BILL???

Posted by: Beka13 | Apr 29, 2008 2:50:54 PM

Give me a break! Now that Obama's strength is weakening, he jumps in and condemns Wright.....just weeks ago he was singing his praises. I guarantee you that Obama would continue with the status quo if his numbers were not be affected. Obama is desparate. He is disingenuous and I disgusted with him and his entire supporters.

Posted by: dixiecharms | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:12 PM

can you imagine this guy obama appointments jesse ,al,wright, farrakcan a humming bird would fly backwards before they could spell cat.

Posted by: pw | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:13 PM

Hillary and John McCain supporters have nothing to discuss other than petty issues. I am strong Obama supporter. I was deeply offended by Rev. wright and understand that some of the things we look for in our leaders are not just about policies. But I also believe that every politician have had bad associations. Ed Rendell praised Farrakan. But politicians try to diver us from the policies and what affect us by using things like Rev. wright like it is going to put food on my table. I like Obama fundamental campaine goal of bringing us together. That is the only way to achieve. Rev.Wright is a selfish bastard.

Posted by: james | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:20 PM

I am disappointed in Mr. Obama. I listen to Rev Wright yesterday because I wanted to see who this guy was... he spoke truth. He was somewhat defiant, but this was to be expected after having had his name slandered on National news for the past month. The USA DOES NOT like to hear negative things said about the nation... even if they are true. This is one thing I have noticed. It is a FACT this this nation is guilty of war crimes, genocide, the use of nuclear WMD upon civilian cities, invading and stealing vast areas of land from other nations and declaring it our own, government condoned bigotry, you name it. This nation is guilty of it by virtue of its past leadership. But just TALK about it and you will get reamed by all these "proud patriots" who only want the sugar side and will practically kill you if you expose the dirty laundry that IS our history.

Posted by: RW | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:20 PM

Funny to see Obama stuttering through another unscripted press conference though, making up stuff as he goes along (ie. all of a sudden, Wright is not his spirtual advisor). The GOP will destroy him.

Posted by: Eric | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:24 PM

Obama - just made this worse for himself now he has inconsistencies in his race speech compared to this News conference. He is so not a leader.

time to go to HRC's camp. Obama is a liar. He said in his race speech that Wright is like an Uncle - and now he was only my pastor - which is it? Your stories don't add up.

Posted by: Brian | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:39 PM

Rev. Wright said at the national press club that Obama says things because he is a politician not because he believes those things.

This may be the only thing upon which I agree with Wright. Obama threw his long time friend and pastor under the bus to save his presidential bid. It's all for his political survival. Nothing new here from the change maker.

GO HILLARY!

Posted by: Emily | Apr 29, 2008 2:51:57 PM

He can run but he can't hide. Obama could have silenced this issue early on but chose not to. He thought it would go away. Now he, his campaign, his supporters and the democratic party have to wallow in it.

Posted by: Chiman | Apr 29, 2008 2:52:23 PM

Ok - in an 8000 member church how in the world could you be close? 8000 people? That's huge.

At least Obama stands up to the plate and doesn't lie, or as Hillary calls it "I knew my comments weren't in keeping with what I knew to be true".

Funny that her supporter is the organizer for the Press Club and the one that extended the invitation to Wright. That tells me that she's not got much of a campaign message and needs to divert attention from her floundering.

Posted by: Indiana voter | Apr 29, 2008 2:52:53 PM

Obama didn't denounce him because he agreed with Wright. He had the race speech so he can get elected. It is too late him to denounce Wright now.

Posted by: kathy | Apr 29, 2008 2:53:10 PM

Please

I was sat in a church when the vicar started to condemn the invasion of Iraq, an invasion i wholeheartedly supported. In which friends of mine were participating.

I got up and walked out. Later on the vicar met me at a social event and asked me why i had walked out. I explained the reasons. I also told him that I would no longer be attending his church services, and joined another (actually better) church.

Barak Obama should have done the same. Especially when he chose to represent everyone regardless of the color of their skin.

Posted by: Christopher Linthwaite | Apr 29, 2008 2:53:41 PM

Just wait until Mr. Wright reacts. He will bring Obama down. Now Obama is certianly doomed!

Posted by: Chiman | Apr 29, 2008 2:53:49 PM

What about Wright being a veteran? what about all the great things he did for Southside Chicago? Where did all that go?

Posted by: geevill | Apr 29, 2008 2:54:11 PM

Here we are all trying to find a way out of Iraq, and Clinton's already ready to bomb Iran.

God help us if she's elected.

Americans have short memories regarding the Clintons.

Posted by: Dan | Apr 29, 2008 2:55:18 PM

Rev. Wright has freedom of speech, just as every other American. Barack Obama can not be judged by his ministers comments. Intelligent citizens will go to the
polls and vote for the most qualified and trusted
candidate - Mr. Barack Obama, the chosen one.

Posted by: Jean | Apr 29, 2008 2:55:31 PM

C.J. Obama is not accountable for his pastor's teachings and beliefs but he is acccountable for his own beliefs and he has had the same beliefs as Rev. Wright for 20 years! He is only denouncing his Pastor now because he is losing votes. Remember Obama's a Politician and will say anything he thinks his followers want to hear. This is only the beginning of Rev. Wright. I think he has some serious dirt on Obama and it will come out.

Posted by: mj | Apr 29, 2008 2:55:40 PM

I applaud Sen Obama. He couldn't have been any more clear about his denunciation of this megliomaniac who the news media so faithfully gave a forum. Or is it another slow news day?

Kudos Barack. I have alredy contributed this month. Guess I'll go back and do it again...and again...again.

Obama is too good a human being. He really gives me hope that are still good politicians among the good one. I understand its really difficult to maintain a balance for a politician but this guy sounds honest and I respect him for that.

Posted by: sri | Apr 29, 2008 2:56:29 PM

This is too funny to read.......so now Obama's numbers go down and he condemns Wright. Little too late don't you think. Obama will never get my vote. This is all a game to him. He does not care about the little guys just what he can get himself. Very sad.

Posted by: Barb | Apr 29, 2008 2:56:34 PM

Can we finally leave this small man of a pastor behind now. He isn't on the ballot, has never been on the ballot and his angry rhetoric sits badly next to Obama's message. Can we finally move on to discussing the issues and values of the people who are actually running for President now?

Posted by: markymark | Apr 29, 2008 2:56:49 PM

Hoosiers for Hillary!!!

Whatever happened to not being able to disown Rev Wright?????????
Went back on your word I see.
So when Rev Wright offends white people across the nation, you say you can't disown him because of [insert whatever here].
But now that the Rev Wright is hurting your campaign, and suggested that you distanced yourself from him because politically you had to, NOW you disown him. Nice hypocrisy.

Wright said nothing that he hadn't said before in those sermons, other than suggesting that you made a political move by distancing yourself from him.

So why are you only disowning him now??? Opportunistic

Posted by: JA | Apr 29, 2008 2:57:03 PM

Obama:"I can no more separate myself from him (Wright) than my white grandmother"
Still live by those words Obama?

Posted by: plainsm | Apr 29, 2008 2:58:13 PM

"He does not speak for me. He does not speak for the campaign and so he may make statements in the future that don't reflect my values or concerns..."

Now LET'S get to work in fixing our nations problems and bring our boy's home. Set your heart and eyes on the Lord and he will never let you down. If it is God's will then he will open peoples hearts and eyes to see that your are an honorable man and love this country. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Seems to be that this whole thing was a set up from the start. I just do not believe anything coming out of Obama's mouth anymore. He says and does what he needs to for political gain. The sad thing is that his entire campaign is based on the opposite. He is the biggest hypocrite of them all.

Hey Marie,

Staying with your cheating husband is VERY differnet from the Wright issue.

Your argument is that if your spouse cheats on you should throw years of marriage, memories (good & bad), friendship and so many other things. It is a very personal choice when it comes to marriage. Aside from all the Clinton faults as well as thier strength and politcal endeavors they probably really love each other. Sex and love do not neccessarily go together. I have never cheated on my wife. Thought of it though.

Posted by: Alan | Apr 29, 2008 2:59:42 PM

I have said it for month's now, this will be Obama's undoing. I still think he gets the Democratic nomination though.

But this will pass, and when it does, the Republicans will strategically reintroduce Ayers and the Weather Underground. Expect 2 more months of controversy with Obama.

I never understood and still don't as to why some people want Clinton to quit the race. It's not over until the convention. I hear liberal radio talk show hosts lambasting Clinton and so my belief in a united democratic party is no longer a reality. This is now a campaign on who can beat John McCain.

Maybe Obama, the master of elocution, the chosen one can do another speech about this.

Boy, talk calling the kettle black. Wright continues to claim people are misjudging him yet goes out to sprout hateful words. He says this is an attack on the 'black churck', and I say, "Really? I don't see the entire African-American community coming to your aid, man."

Yep, it seems Mr. Wright really do not care for Obama. If he did, he would have kept his clap trap shut

Posted by: GWP, Franklin Boro, NJ | Apr 29, 2008 3:01:51 PM

I have been a strong critic of Obama, voted for Hillary and said I would never vote for Obama. But, I have to say that I have felt some sympathy for him over the past two days. Do I think that he did not know about Wright's beliefs? Of course I think he was aware of them. But, a person can develop in their thoughts and beliefs. Maybe in the past he was able to justify Wright's ideas or rationalize them. And maybe now he actually thinks they are wrong. For Obama, this controversy may be a lot more than a political one; it may also be a personal or existential issue. Hearing him speak today, I felt he was sincere and humbled. I appreciated that because in the past I have not liked his sometimes condescending attitude. Yesterday, I thought to myself, if Obama handles this correctly, I may switch and support his nomination. What I had hoped for was that Obama would use this unique opportunity to make a strong statement condemning Wright, Farakhan, and other "race hustlers" like them and to say that it is time to turn a new page in our country's civil rights history. He did not go this far, but he came close. I think that Obama may actually win votes by the way he has handled this controversy.

Posted by: Sylvie | Apr 29, 2008 3:02:06 PM

Whay should America believe Obama that what he said is true from his heart. He has changed his stance on this issue so many times - there is NO WAY America will trust this LIAR!

Posted by: Chiman | Apr 29, 2008 3:02:13 PM

Alan i disagree. Marriage is a much bigger deal than who you see speak at church once a week. It speaks to your decision making process and your self worth and what you are willing to put up with. I lost all respect for her after that. A husband plays a bigger role that a Pastor.

Since Obama is currently on a roll with this way too late denouncing of Wright, when's he going to denounce Michele?

Do his polls have to decrease again before he actually leaves the church?

Hillary is the ONLY candidate.

This has the Howard Dean "yeowwwwwwww" written all over it - which is appropriate, because he's an idiot as well. Beginning of the end for Obama.

If only the democratic party nominated its candiates in a democratic manner (and of course actually counted all 50 states) rather than the dumbest caucus system I've ever seen, the best person for the job would actually have the most delegates.

for some, there will never be anything Obama does that is correct. So sorry for you folks. Wright and Obama are and have always been two different people with different life experiences, views of the world and race in America. Wright introduced Obama to his Christian religion and that's where it ends. He never was a political mentor. Wright is angry and stuck in a past of divide; Obama is hopeful and has a vision of unity for the future. Stop being 'stuck on stupid', stop letting the media keep this alive, and start paying attention to what the candidates say about the real issues. For example: McCain - 100 yrs in Iraq, in one way or another; Clinton- ready to nuke Iran; Obama - let's try to use diplomacy in ways we have not done before you consider more harsh measures. To me, its a very simple selection. I vote for sanity and vision.

how predictable. he threw pastor under the train to save his political hide but went to his church and i bet said his amens to all wright's vile assertions.

a man who would expose his children to this abuse is less than fit to be president; he demonstrates poor judgment.

LOL...it is SO funny. Bunches of Obama supporters were supporting this guy. Now are those same people going to disavow Obama since he is denouncing him???

Obama = OMG..I will do and say whatever to get myself in Power

Now that Obama has disowned the black community (by disowning his Pastor), he has no where to run and hide.

COULD HE POSSIBLY SPEAK ANY SLOWER????? Please shoot me now if he ends up President! He will be torture to have to listen to! I'd rather hear Hillary's screetchy voice for 4 yrs than his!!!

PLUS he's a LIAR!!

OBAMA IS A JOKE!

He can denounce all he wants but where will he run when he does not get the nomination. He has screwed himself now!

I applaud Obama. He had to disavow Rev. Wright because Rev. Wright implied that Obama was insincere in his race speech in Philly--rejecting Rev. Wright's 30-second offensive sermon points only to be elected. Why couldn't Rev. Wright just say that "he and Obama agreed to disagree", no he threw Obama under the bus. I take Obama at his word, when he says that the Rev. Wright he knew 20 years ago is not the Rev. Wright that is purposely devisive now... and Rev. Wright's view does not represent the black church.

This, too, will pass. Give the guy a break. He had to "disown" someone he had learned to love DESPITE the pastor's defects. That must be hurting him much more than politically. I feel for Obama. It's like a divorce, and doesn't come easily. Divorces do not happen just because someone tells you something about a spouse.
