Obama Fields Another Farrakhan Question

Share

April 09, 2008 7:55 PM

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was forced to deal with another question about the racially polarizing Minister Louis Farrakhan out on the stump in Levittown, Pennsylvania, a town with it's own history of racial tensions.

Obama was asked about his church's magazine giving Louis Farrakhan an award, saying he "epitomized greatness."

The questioner at the town hall was referencing Trumpet Newmagazine, launched by Obama's Trinty United chuch in Chicago, which used to be headed by Obama's controversial former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright. The newsmagazine was published by Wright’s daughters.

"How can praise for any anti-Semitic demagogue be considered a minor difference between you and the reverend?" the woman asked.

"It wasn't a minor different, it was a major difference," Obama answered defiantly of the differences between himself and his former pastor Wright.

He then went on to explain the award his church's magazine gave to Ferrakhan, "This was done by a magazine that was connected to the church. I would have never done it. It was primary focused on the rehabilitation work that they do for ex-offenders in Chicago. That doesn’t excuse it, that just explains it."

He expressed his denunciation of his church's praise of Farrakhan, "I've been very clear about saying that was wrong. And nobody has spoken out more fiercely on the issue of anti- Semitism than I have."

Obama referenced the race speech he gave in Philadelphia last month and said he knows that biases and hurt still exists in some communities. Levittown in the 1950’s was a mass produced housing community that included plans for white residents only.

Later another woman asked how he was going to run against John McCain.

"We got some work to do," Obama answered, countering that the democratic primary was not nearly over, "We’re behind here, we’ve got a lot of work to do."

I do take Obama at his word. In my experiences
in listening to his speeches, reading his writings, hearing from folks who know him and/or have worked with him, and checking out the legislation he's worked on, I have not seen any evidence that he holds the same views as his pastor on all issues. Certainly, there is no evidence that he holds the views of Farrakhan.

I am a Jew and I will be voting for Obama. I am comfortable with his stand about Israel. When I listen to him and look at the work he does I see that his views of inclusion, tolerance, and social justice are very similar to those values in Judaism as represented by the concepts of tzedakah and tikkun olam.

I wonder how long it will be before Hillary takes questions from the crowd? Bill skirted the press really well today, when he was recieving HIS award for the Ireland Peace Process.
I could help but notice thou THAT THEY DID NOT GIVE HILLARY AN AWARD FOR HER CONTRIBUTION OF THE PEACE PROCESS.
so much for her experience.

con johnson - McCain did no attend Haggee church at all. Obama spent twenty years in Wright's pews and found nothing wrong with Wright's preaching until Obama was called on this issue when running for president. Big difference there. Look, if you make a habit of hanging out with Wright, Farrakhan, Sharpton and Jackson and Ayers then you HAVE to be plain deaf and dumb not to imagine you will NOT be called on the kind of people who helped you formulate you world views on life and the world itself.

Rev. Wright is also somebody who has made enormous contributions in his community and has turned a lot of lives around," Powell said, "And so, I have to put that in context with these very offensive comments that he made, which I reject out of hand."

Powell added that he does not know Wright, and praised Obama's response.

"I think that Sen. Obama handled the issue well . . . he didn't look the other way. He didn't wait for the, for the, you know, for the storm to go over. He went on television, and I thought, gave a very, very thoughtful, direct speech. And he didn't abandon the minister who brought him closer to his faith," Powell told Sawyer.

Powell, who has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate in almost every election since he retired from military service and public life, expressed admiration for Obama.

"It was a good (speech)," Powell said. "I admired him for giving it. And I agreed with much of what he said."

Allison Davis, who hired the young Obama into his small, Chicago law firm Davis, Miner, and Barnhill in 1993, left the firm in late 1999-2000 and became a housing developer. Davis went into business with Tony Rezko, the indicted businessman who’s scheduled to go on trial for corruption in Illinois, and who was a major fundraiser for Obama.

Davis met Rezko when he was a client of Davis, Miner, and Barnhill. Rezko is currently under indictment in Illinois for demanding kickbacks from companies seeking state government business contracts under Governor Blagojevich. Obama was identified as one of the politicians cited in the indictment as having received political contributions from Rezko out of his kickback funds.

Tony Rezko hosted fundraising events for Obama in his home and was on Obama’s US Senate campaign finance committee which collected $14 million for his campaign against conservative Alan Keyes, an African-American who served as an Ambassador during the Reagan Administration. In order to avoid a scandal during his presidential campaign, Obama returned $85,000 that Rezko and his family had donated to him.

In early 2000, while Obama served as a state senator in Illinois, he also sat on the board of the nonprofit Woods Fund. The Woods Fund is a Chicago-based foundation that claims its primary mission is to make financial grants in order to increase and/or create opportunities for disadvantaged people and low-income communities.

The chairman of the Woods fund board in 2000 was Howard Stanback, who like Obama also had connections to Davis, according to the reliable sources.

Davis submitted a grant request to the Woods Foundation for a $1 million investment in his development partnership, Neighborhood Rejuvenation LP, that would be used to finance low-income senior-citizen housing. Under normal circumstances, a board member is supposed to recuse himself or herself from decisions where they have a business or personal relationship.

Obama, who did not recuse himself, voted to approve Davis’ grant request. Stanback, on the other hand, abstained from voting. The housing project, which also received a $5.7 million loan from the city of Chicago, in turn donated almost $70,000 in political contributions to Obama’s presidential campaign.

In the past, Rezko gave Obama — who served as an Illinois State Senator — his first two political contributions in 1995, $1,000 each from two of his companies. In 1998, State Senator Obama wrote letters to city and state officials urging them to fund a Davis-Rezko housing project. It was an obvious quid pro quo arrangement.

Another major fundraiser for Obama is William Ayers, who also sat on the board of the Woods Fund with Obama and is a professor at the University of Chicago.

Bill Ayers, along with his wife Bernadine Dohrn, was an active member of the Weather Underground, a radical left-wing group that advocated violence against the United State. Both Ayers and Dohrn went “underground” in 1970 after others in the group accidentally detonated a bomb in a Greenwich Village (New York City) townhouse. The blast killed three of the group’s members including Ayers’ girlfriend at the time.

While Ayers and Dohrn were hiding from law enforcement, the Weather Underground participated in the bombings of the US Capital, the Pentagon and a State Department building. In 1981 Ayers and Dohrn turned themselves in to federal authorities, but all charges were dropped as a result of alleged “government legal misconduct.” In his 2001 memoir, Ayers wrote, “I don’t regret setting the bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.”

Ayers and Dohrn are known to have held at least one fundraiser for Barack Obama in their Chicago home.

During Obama’s last year on the board of The Woods Fund (2002), he participated in awarding grants, including a $70,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, a Chicago-based group founded by Rashid and Mona Khalidi.

In another suspected quid pro quo arrangement similar to those with Ayers and Rezko, Rashid Khalidi also held a fundraising event in his home for Barack Obama.

In the Middle East, Rashid Khalidi was known as a man to be reckoned with. From 1972 through 1983, Khalidi was the director in Beirut of the official Palestinian press agency, FAFA. His wife worked there as well.

According to sources, when the Khalidi’s left Chicago for Columbia University in New York, Rashid was honored with the Edward Said Chair in Arab Studies at that Ivy League university. Their goodbye party in Chicago included testimonials from Bill Ayers and Barack Obama.

Obama CHOSE Marxist Professors as per his book.

Obama CHOSE to associate with communist/Marxist terrorists such as William Ayers.

Obama CHOSE to associate with Rezko and his arab connections.

Obama CHOSE to attend for 20 years a communist/marxist based "Black Liberation Theology" church headed by Rev. Wright.

Obama is suspect because of his ANTI-AMERICAN persona as well as his wife is with her same rhetoric.

The above is the window into Obama's soul which is open and if one will CHOSE to look hard enough you will find Obama is unfit to hold the office of President of the United States.

I am hard pressed to understand everyone. I can't think of any person in the world, that I agree with and admire all of the time. I loved the Kennedy brothers but disagreed with many things they did. I loved Dr King, but disagreed with things that he did. I can say the same for almost every public and private figure in my lifetime. I like Senator Obama. He's not perfect. He knows that and so do I. I love our country, but it too is not perfect and there isn't a person in the country who would disagree with that. Picking Presidents is about choices. For me, warts and all, I think Senator Obama is the best choice. For those who think that Senator Clinton or McCain are the best choice, then vote for them. But if our country is every going to move forward, then the time is now. Whether for Obama, Clinton or McCain can't we vote for them, rather than tearing down the others?

lauren,
hillary has been taking questions from the audience from the very beginning.
and she answering them very well.

Posted by: jgaw | Apr 9, 2008 9:37:52 PM

Lauren,
It's good to se that you are down to shouting just occasionally, except for your name. It's also good to see that you are acknowledging that it will be a close race. If Obama continues to have to deal with Farrakhan questions, though, it won't be so close.

Obama, doesn't really matter who he associates with!
The press have already decided this for us!
ABC is out of touch with mainstream media!

Jerry, excellent post. Looks like Hillary hit another roadblock today. Look for the polls to show her & Obama even next week. Obama 2008!

Americans can no longer trust the agenda driven media (especially those who are so far to the left such as Keith Olbermann of MSNBC) to present the truth. Voters must begin to ask many questions of Barack Obama who is attempting to win the White House in 2009. We must begin to ask “who is Barack Obama?”

Obama has been given a FREE PASS from the left-wing media as opposed to Clinton or McCain.

American voters must get your head out of the sand and not support a candidate for ESOTERIC reasons.

This country can not afford an individual such as Obama to be President. What this country can afford is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN to be President who is not SUSPECT as to his political beliefs.

Obama is suspect and will continue to be so because he will not denounce and/or reject that wihich is truly within him.

Obama '08,
I see you are busy trying to hawk Dan Calabrese articles. I'm sure Dan Calabrese is a nice guy, and you may even be Dan Calabrese, but I still don't think washing dishes provides a means to establish one's credentials as an investigative journalist. Mr. Dan seems to be peddling recycled nonsense from whatever rumor rags he can find in the dumptster.

Obama, don't judge him be Farrakhan!
Obama, don't judge him by Wright!
Obama, don't judge him by Rezko!
Obama, don't judge him by his spinelessness on China!
Obama, no judgement. He deserves it.

As long as obama has membership to this church he will face questions about such things----he has resolved NOTHING with regard to his relationship with this church and what it teaches it's people. They can take the man out of the church, but they can't take the church out of the man.......

Obama is a creep! He will be exposed.

Vote NoBama!

McCain , with Hagey at his side, said that every thing he (Rev Hagey) stands for , I stand for. Obama didn't say that about the remarks of Wright or Farrakhan. I'm an middle age white guy. I have listened to Farrakhan speak many times to his congregation on cable tv. I never heard him say anything that was offensive to me. The man makes allot more sense, and has more love and compassion in his heart and soul then many I have listened to on the PTL network. He's more intelligent too. I get the feeling that this blog is dominated by right wingers or Clintonistas. Maybe both, cant tell the difference sometimes....

Hay folks...can you believe this? Rupert Murdoch family is having a fundraiser in Nottinghill, London, for our "champion of clean up Washington influence peddlers" himself; our illustrious reformer Sen. Barack Obama...Rupert Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth Murdoch will host the event...Does this mean that our beloved Barack is really the modern version of Faust?

Obama gets yet another pass from the msm. Just imagine if the principal was McCain or Clinton. You'd have wall to wall coverage, and apologies demanded. Hate is hate, and good deeds don't fix it if one keeps hating along with the good deeds.
