Obama Defends His Comments About Pa. Voters

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama defended his comments on Pennsylvania voters at his Terra Haute, Ind., town hall this evening, saying that he believes they understandably are bitter and frustrated.

What did leave out? A repetition of points he made at a San Francisco fundraiser last weekend suggesting that those voters are clinging to guns or religion as a result.

Launching out of a regular stump speech line about Bush-Cheney not looking out for Americans, he said, “See, that’s what people understand about politics these days. The game is fixed. It’s not working for ordinary Americans. So when I, when I go around and I talk to people, there is frustration and there is anger and there is bitterness.

“I was in San Francisco talking to a group at a fundraiser. And somebody asked me, ‘Well, how are you gonna get votes in Pennsylvania? What’s going on there? We hear that it’s hard for some working class people to get behind your campaign. Why is that?’

"I said, 'Well look, they’re frustrated -- and for good reason, because for the last 25 years, they’ve seen jobs shipped overseas, they’ve seen their economies collapse, they have lost their jobs, they’ve lost their pensions, they’ve lost their health care. And for 25, 30 years, Democrats and Republicans have come before them and said we’re going to make your community better. We’re gonna make it right. And nothing ever happens. And of course they’re bitter. Of course they’re frustrated. You would be too. In fact many of you are. Because the same thing has happened here in Indiana, same thing happened across the border in Decatur, the same thing has happened across the country. Nobody’s looking out for you. Nobody is thinking about you.”

Obama then addressed the criticism that he’s received from Sens. McCain and Clinton over his comments –- calling their responses “rich.”

“Sen. Clinton says, ‘Well I don’t think people are bitter in Pennsylvania. I think Barack’s being condescending.’ John McCain says, ‘Oh, how could he say that? How could he say people are bitter. He’s obviously out of touch with people.’ Out of touch? Out of touch?

"I mean, John McCain, it took him three tries to finally figure out that the home foreclosure crisis was a problem and to come up with a plan for it. And he’s saying I’m out of touch? Sen. Clinton voted for a credit card-sponsored bankruptcy bill that made it harder for people to get out of debt after taking money from the financial services companies, and she says I’m out of touch?

"No I’m in touch. I know exactly what’s going on. I know what’s going on in Pennsylvania, I know what’s going on in Indiana, I know what’s going on in Illinois. People are fed up. They’re angry, and they’re frustrated, and they’re bitter, and they want to see a change in Washington, and that’s why I’m running for president of the United States of America.”

I live in PA and am insulted by this idiot. Who does he think he is? I wouldn't vote for him if he was the only one running. I'm a lifelong Democrat and if he steals the nomination, I'm voting for McCain. I couldn't in good conscience vote for this man.

Good for you Jacko.

I feel the same way about ms inevitable. I'm not quite sure I could vote McCain, that would be tough...but I sure know how to stay home.

Elite hill and free trade bill don't need my vote. And McWar definitely doesn't need my vote.

A true Democrat could never in good conscience vote for a man who would continue to destroy the country! Please reconsider your stance and think of what it would mean to your family and children?

I PRAY FOR OBAMA AND HIS CAMPAIGN. Obama is riht people are frustrated. Bill did add to the problem. Jobs gone to other countries. Home is where the heart is. I remember that I was working at a sewing industry for 10 years and we got laid off, because of the jobs going to other countries. The plant sent all of it work to Csoreka or Puerto Rico and close down. They were many out of a job, but the owner caed enough to pay for our education so we could train for other jobs. They were many elderly people who was close to drawinf social security and some with no high school diplomas. It was hard for many. Obama has really gained my respect for caring enough to evaluate and tell the truth. Hillary is always negative against Obama. He is really doing a great job. How Can hilary even think of such when she can not manage her own campaign money. Is this the lady we want to be president? Think about it. Obama is a very intelligent man. Mccain cannot really say much he is still trying to convince everyone. Hillary is so out spoken and rude. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO OBAMA AND HIS CAMPAIGN STAFF. GO OBAMA

The only silver lining is that this happened on a weekend.. maybe less people will see? Nevermind, 24/7 news. Crap, this is bad democrats. Let this be a lesson to you. NEVER EVER TRUST A MEDIA INDUCED BANDWAGON. Pay attention to who you are voting for!

Danny

I would vote for McCain because he's honorable and a good man. My first choice is Hillary, but if I have to choose McCain, I can live with it, so can my small town family.

Obama is the real deal.
Hillary is trying to spin his words out of context,in order to get all her bad news swept under the rug.
I am also bitter.Things are really bad now for most people in America.Small town america has been hit hard.
What is wrong with the truth?

I notice no one has focused on what Bill Clinton has said about Hillary's age and her mis-speaking? about Bosnia and sniper fire. How in the hell does anyone forget they were shot at? Shot at while with your only beloved child beside you?? She had a senior moment and no one is ready to admit it.
Senator Obama speaks the truth with insight and intelligence. When we are down and sad we tend to turn to our faith and religion to lift our spirits. We are taught that The Lord will carry us when we are unable to go on alone. For those who grew up in church the powerful prayer "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me".We retreat into our faith to distract us from lifes trials and hardships that we sometimes face. More now than ever we need to understand what he is telling us.He said he would not be surprised that some people are "bitter". he did not call anyone bitter. We have in this country become anti-immigrant and anti-trade. but the anti-trade part is justified. With all the jobs being shipped out of the US people are afraid and worried about the future. Stop trying to bring this brilliant man down. Barack Obama a special gift that I believe the Lord sent to us to wake us up!!! WAKE UP!!

Not for me. I am a south central Pennsylvanian and feel no anger toward Obama, I agree with him. I am bitter at Bush's lies and the federal government as a whole. In fact, I am more angry at the national media's handling of this. Am I bitter? Your damn right, and that is why I made up my mind to vote for Obama.

Mr Obama knows nothing about Pennsylvanians.

They Are very Proud Americans.

They Love and support their Country.

They Never Condemn it or God Damn it.

They Automatically stand up and put their hand on their hearts when they say the Pledge of allegiance or Hear the National Anthem.

They Support the Service men and woman, from wearing lapep pins to yellow ribbons on the porch post. They are our Sons & Daughters, Mothers and Dads, sister and Brothers, who Deserve and have earned our support. They are not a troop, They are Americans doing their duty, Serving their country Proudly.

We are not Frustrated

We are ###### that Senators like you do not do their job. Show up and vote present and take the pay check for nothing.

We are ###### because Senators Like you
Squander the money we give to the government on stupid programs and not the ones we need.

We are ####### because some one wants to take another right away. Yes we are hunters and we want our constitutional right to stay intact.

We are ###### when you Side with the minority over the majority.

We are ###### when you Senators and congressman get up on your high horses and look down upon us, When you in fact are suppose to be working for us, not against us.

We are ###### every time we have to press #1 for English. Read our lips, make the national language English for all. That is what the majority of people want. How hard can that be to do it.

We only get Frustrated when we can not get you Politicians out of office as easy as you were put into it.

Jacko:
It's a shame that you would think that way.
Think of the men & women who have already given their lives for a dishonorable war? Think about McCain wanting to continue to destroy the lives of those families and others who have yet to pay the ultimate price! Think of the money being spent on the war and how it could better be used to change the lives of thousands (if not millions) of Pennsylvanians and all Americans? Whomever the democratic candidate is, is who I will vote for! Please reconsider your decision.

I live in small town Ohio. Yes what Obama says is stating the truth however, I don't own a gun or go to church because I'm frustrated with the way things are in my town or country. I go to church because of my faith and my own morals and values. I don't cling to those things!!! He insulted small town America plain and simple!! This man has very poor judgement to lump small town frustration with owning a gun or going to church! Big case of open mouth insert foot!! I could never ever vote for Obama. If Hillary is not the nominee I will vote for McCain. At least he is patriotic, honorable and doesn't insult us small town folks. Hillary in 2008!

Senator Obama, thanks for laying it out there like it really is. You speak nothing but the truth, and maybe those better off in this country like the $109 million Clintons and others like them, will get the message you so eloquently have brought to the forefront- our small town concerns and bitterness over gross neglect for decades by Washington, including our national leader's irresponsible policies like NAFTA that have cost us jobs and decimated our communities. We are indeed very bitter, and we want change in Washington.

I grew up in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. I am a very proud Pennsylvanian,But after graduating from college there in Pittsburgh I could not find a good job. It was both sad and scary. And that was
in 1982. The steel mills were closed and all of our young boys were joining the army. That was the only way to see a bright future. I love Pittsburgh But I decided to move to Texas where the job were back then. That was best decision I ever made. It broke my Mom's heart that I moved so far away ,But I had no choice. I was also "bitter" back then. Where did the ever present steel mills go? To all those who live in Pennsylavania, be honest and admit Senator Obama was/is right. Past politicians came in and promised the mills are coming back. They never returned. But the politicians still come and still promise. You have the nerve to be mad a Barack But not The Clintons??? While she promises to fight against the Colunbia Free trade agreement He (Bill) is making speeches and money promoting the same trade agreement!! Where is your outrage?? Your hate for Senator Obama is more that this speech, I am from pennsylvania and I am sad to say there is truth to what Rendell said about some people in Pennsylvania. I would respect your distaste for Senator Obama if it were truly on issues But I am afraid it is more.

The narrative of Senator Obama as being out of touch with the working class is out of touch with reality. Unlike Senators Clinton and McCain, who were raised in single family homes and solidly middle class, Senator Obama was raised in an apartment and a time on welfare. Unlike Senators Clinton and McCain, he paid his OWN way through college. No one gave him anything!

Most of the MSM is becoming more and more like Fox News everyday. Rather than playing or posting his complete quote where he talks in length about the plight of the poor and working class and their understandable bitterness, yes bitterness, they play a clip out of context. He was clearly defending the deserved bitterness of small town Americans who have been shafted by the government time-and-time again. Yes, he as not at his most eloquent, but to accuse him of putting down small town Americans is a complete distortion!

My good friend is in the service and is leaving for Iraq soon, I worry for him. He says not to worry that he chose to serve his country. He is an honorable man and he is as livid over this as I am. Neither or us or any member of our families will ever vote for Obama in the general election. This is personal to us.

Posted by: Jacko | Apr 11, 2008 11:12:12 PM

DTD you are horribly mislead. Obama was raised in Hawaii by an elite family (his mother and grandparents mostly but both his fathers were wealthy as well). He also attended private schools all his life. He is a silver spoon baby.

Posted by: DCVoter | Apr 11, 2008 11:17:42 PM

Wow, he's actually more condescending than Kerry. Come to the center DNC....come to the center.

Posted by: Mack | Apr 11, 2008 11:22:39 PM

No, he didn't leave out guns and religion.

He was talking about people voting based only on gun rights and abortion rights, because they don't see ANY party as able to help them economically any more.

It's what he said in CA, and he said it again now. Open your ears. Here's the full quote:

OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people feel most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...I think they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama (laugher), then that adds another layer of skepticism (laughter).

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What's the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is -- so, we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- close tax loopholes, roll back, you know, the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama's gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we're gonna provide health care for every American. So we'll go down a series of talking points.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing.
