Obama (Jokingly) Picks Running Mate

April 28, 2008 4:35 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Senator Barack Obama has chosen his running mate if he wins the Democratic nomination. Well, not really.

But Jean Weiss, an 82-year-old woman from North Carolina, has gotten closer to joining an Obama ticket than anyone else to-date.

During a town hall in Wilmington, an exuberant Weiss stood up and received the biggest cheer in the room when she launched into a long speech about all the reasons she supports Obama.

"Don't hit on Hillary," Weiss advised, "Bring us all back. Let her do that stuff. Leave her alone, you don't need to do that. You are higher than that."

"Will you be my running mate?" Obama answered. "That's my running mate there, she's got me fired up!"

The Senator, and his potential Veep, hugged after Weiss stormed the stage and Obama stepped down to greet his biggest fan.

The Senator has been mum in the past about his choice for a vice presidential running mate should he becoming the nominee saying such talk is premature.  Obama has also dismissed talk of becoming a vice presidential candidate himself in the event Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., wins the Democratic nomination.

The idea of a Clinton-Obama or Obama-Clinton dream ticket has been suggested several times over the course of the increasingly bitter primary fight.  In the ABC News debate in mid-April, neither candidate seemed willing to entertain the notion, and several Democratic heavyweights, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., have dismissed it out of hand.

I am an Obama supporter, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that John Edwards, will soon announce his support for Hillary. The winds have changed, the barbecue smells a little better in the other yard, and the sell-out man from NC will soon join the team looking for some attention and a political power alliance (deal?) with Hillary. I can smell it coming. He's just trying to decide which day before the primary would best serve his own interests, and also allow him to hit the campaign trail for Hillary. I'm guessing this week, either Wed or Thurs, with immediate media talk of a Hillary-Edwards ticket.

Go Obama! I'll be proud to have you represent me! Yes we can! Together, we'll bring goodness back!

NC Gov. endorseing Hillary

I listened to my mom say the other night she backed Hillary, warts and all because at least we know what we are getting. She said she was sick that the primary got this far along and we are learning things we should have known months ago. She is suspicious of Senator Obama. The moment that he told his pastor not to be a part of his announcement she feels was the beginning of a web of deceit. If this had been addressed from the beginning, it would not be the monster it is now. She's a republican who is voting democrat for the first time in her life!

The DREAM TICKET would be Clinton and Edwards

Clinton vetted? HA! Here's what the republicans will say about Hillary Clinton: If she couldn't keep her eye on her husband while he cheated on her, in the White House, right under her nose, how can she keep her eye on the country. Don't kid yourselves, the Lewinsky scandal and Bill Clinton impeachment hearings will be run on a loop 24 hours a day if Hillary gets the nomination. Hillary has more baggage than anyone. Can't win. Republicans are dying for her to get the nomination knowing that. Don't vote for her. Those who do will be personally responsible for the downfall of the United States.

I understand the senior senator from Arizona is endorsing Clinton.

Obama Edwards 2008!!

There are a lot of GOP supporters and paid HRC people saying inflammatory and stupid things. I see a lot of copy and paste between story comments.

*Dont be fooled, with the low low popularity of the Republican party they know only confusing people will help them win.

Obama Edwards 2008!!

Republicans are definitely playing us big time. Why do you think they (Rush, Hannity, all the conservative TV pundits, etc) are pushing so hard for Hillary to win the nomination? Hillary thinks "vetted" means that her baggage has already been dealt with and can't effectively be used against her. This is nonsense. The republicans would much rather attack Hillary in nonstop ads- to bring out the conservative antiHillary base- and remind the heartland of America of the scandals from the Clinton years. The repubs are afraid of Obama. McCain fancies himself to be the 'Maverick' for 'change in Washington' running against Hillary as an 'entrenched old Washington' politician. He is much less comfortable running against a 'change' candidate like Obama, because he wants to be the change candidate. This is how he pictures himself, and Obama owns the change theme. McCain would be pegged as the 'much older out of touch Washington insider' if he were forced to run against Obama, the 'uniter and changer'. It's all about identities and labels. It's clear which path is more difficult and less comfortable for McCain.

Obama is the future. Hillary and McCain are the past.

Posted by: erin | Apr 28, 2008 6:51:40 PM

Obama WAS the future; now he's just another deceptive politician, only less experienced.

Posted by: James | Apr 28, 2008 6:54:03 PM

It's really presumptuous of him to pick a running mate. Ugh.

I think everybody is going to be really shocked on May 6. NC is going for Hillary and not Obama.

Posted by: ncvoter | Apr 28, 2008 7:08:41 PM

Obama is pure class. He's getting the kitchen sink thrown at him by both Hillary and McCain and still out polls them both nationally. This is why. Hillary, like McCain and Bush before him, has nothing to run on except fear and smear. Her supporters need to start thinking about what good qualities and talk about those she has instead of trying to tear down a decent man.

WHOSE FAULT IS IT? Many Obama supporters cannot face the truth about their candidate, period. They began supporting him when they knew nothing about him, and now that they've invested so much of themselves in the "change" he pretended to represent, there is just no turning back for them. No, they will not let information which does not support their image of this man intrude upon their dreams. I blame Obama for this, more than his supporters. He knew he was perpetrating a terrible hoax on the voters of this country from the start. He knew the kinds of ruthless tactics he had used from the beginning to jumpstart his political career. He knew about his dubious associations and how they flew in the face of his calls for "change" and "unification." He knew about the racist theology to which he subscribed for 20 years, and how destructive such ideas are to the progress of race relations in this country. No, I do not place primary blame for our current unfortunate situation on his supporters; I place it squarely on Obama, who has shown an almost criminal lack of concern about the damage his tactics have done not only to the Democratic Party, but more importantly, to relations between the races about which, ironically, he professes to care so much.

Wright's message has been loud and clear to Obama. "I made you, I can break you". Obama is bought and sold. Unelectable

Posted by: Linda | Apr 28, 2008 7:39:36 PM

I think the republicans are scared to death of running against Obama.

Posted by: lisa | Apr 28, 2008 7:42:34 PM

If Obama is not subjected to Racial McCarthyism then it is Just plain guilt by association....When did this Wright guy announce for the presidency? If one's loyalty begin and end with Rev Wright's words and sermons you should already be voting for Hillary. The tough times have not started and already there are defectors in the Cause...Shame on your cowardice.

James,

thanks for your concern. I look at things in much the same way, but with a slight twist:

No, I do not place primary blame for our current unfortunate situation on her supporters; I place it squarely on Clinton, who has shown an almost criminal lack of concern about the damage her tactics have done not only to the Democratic Party, but more importantly, to relations between the races.
