Obama Says Bush Should Boycott Olympics If....

April 09, 2008 7:02 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: In his strongest language to date about the Olympics, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said that President Bush should boycott the opening ceremonies of if the Chinese do not take steps to stop the genocide in Darfur and respect the human rights of Tibetan people.

Regarding the full Olympic games this summer, Obama says a decision to boycott the opening ceremonies would be on the table but should be made close to the start of the games.

"As I have communicated in public and to the President, it is past time for China to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people, to allow foreign journalists and diplomats access to the region, and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet," Obama said in a statement.

The Democratic presidential frontrunner had seemed to want to avoid talking about the Olympics and Sen. Hillary Clinton's call for a boycott of the Olympics opening ceremonies on August 8, 2008. The junior Senator from Illinois has a particularly tricky balancing act when it comes to the subject of the Olympics: Chicago is vying to host the 2016 games and one of Obama's top campaign advisors and close friends, Valerie Jarrett, is the vice chair of Chicago's bid committee.

Here is Obama's full statement:

"If the Chinese do not take steps to help stop the genocide in Darfur and to respect the dignity, security, and human rights of the Tibetan people, then the President should boycott the opening ceremonies. As I have communicated in public and to the President, it is past time for China to respect the human rights of the Tibetan people, to allow foreign journalists and diplomats access to the region, and to engage the Dalai Lama in meaningful talks about the future of Tibet. I am also deeply concerned about China's failure to support efforts to halt the genocide in Darfur. Regarding the Beijing Olympics this summer, a boycott of the opening ceremonies should be firmly on the table, but this decision should be made closer to the Games."

Oh, so he waits to see what others, like Hillary, are doing and then plucks up courage to say "me too, I agree!" He's a wuzz!

Obama clearly knows what strong diplomacy is.

Hillary is trying to please the audience, caring less about Darfur and Tibet than about US polls.

Obama's is the only plan that might get some leverage out of this. The Chinese might let reporters in and stop supplying the sudanese to save face.

Yet again- Barack Obama follows Hillary and echoes her ideas !! Not much of a leader. Hillary is the trail blazer who is unambigous, precise and clear in her prescriptions to end the war and restore our economy. Barack just plagarizes and paraphrases her ideas

His statement shows how much he understands diplomacy. Unlike our current president. Hillary doesn't seem to understand it either as her statement seems to have been made to draw attention to her faltering campaign.

Well, that knocked a little of the glitter off of that guy for me. What we really need is one more president that thinks it's his role to tell other countries what they should do. The role of the president is to defend and uphold our constitution. Nothing more. Nothing less. Listen to the oath of office.

Actually...Hillary plucked her answer from Nancy Pelosi.

I guess he wants to put pressure on China.

I predict that China does nothing and Obama will push to boycott the opening ceremonies.

Nancy Pelosi called for the boycott long before Hillary did....Hillary only called it after her sh-t hit the fan and she needed to change the subject in the press.

NOT MUCH OF A TRAILBLAZER IN MY OPINION!

He sure didn't say this earlier when he was wishy washy about saying anything negative to China, after all we owe them money and don't bite the hand that feeds us?

What a phony, what a slime ball - talk about change - this is what obama means about change. Say one thing and then two hours later, when you realize you said something wrong, quickly say something better. Confuse the public - say anything, keep them confused. I am running for president and I am right and Clinton and McCain and Bush are wrong, wrong, wrong - he is really ready for some clinical evaluation.

Hillary supporters, have you been watching the current polls out of PA, NC??? The Fat Lady is about ready to sing!!! I have been watching these candidates closely, Hillary is constantly looking down at prepared statements when she addresses the media and her rally supporters. If you watch OBAMA he talks to reporters with direct eye contact and never reads a prepared statement, that's who I want running my White House, someone that articulates right from his mind and mouth.

Posted by: Dennis | Apr 9, 2008 7:34:00 PM

This is just too funny. After sensing that what he said doesn't look good (actually, looks really weak and reflects lack of conviction), he comes back two hours later to amend his statement.
After first saying that we shouldn't offen "our banker", he retracts, changes his mind, then acts like he is the really thoughtful one here.
This guy looks worse and worse every day.
To the person pointing out the fact that HRC is going to lose, yes, most of us know that. But that still does not change the fact that the democratic candidate, BO, is weak, unsure of himself and his positions, and lacks experience and courage. It's easy to give speeches with no real WORLD impact. But when confronted with a major challenge, how to handle relations with the Chinese, he has proven himself to fold like a deck of cards.

In other news, a certain Republican claims that HRC is a viable Commander in Chief while BO certainly is not.
In other news, Edwards' wife endorses HRC's health care plan (give it 2 months and BO will also switch over to HRC policies, which seems to be his pattern)

Truly a disappointment.

Obama’s supporters would cover the world with smoke and mirrors to try and make Barack Hussein Obama look good, regardless of all his lies and ties to radical anti-Americans. Obama could butcher a kitten on the White House lawn and his followers would try to make it look like a good thing.

I imagine some of the people who have already voted for Obama would like to change their votes! Obama, along with Dean and Pelosi, are destroying the Democratic Party. They say we have 48 states … not 50.

How do you defend a woman who claims she has the experience to be Commander-in-chief when she was too lazy to read any intelligence on a war she was voting to start.

How do you defend a woman who claimed to be against NAFTA, only to get caught
with her pants down...and it turned out she actually lobbied for it.

HILLARY GETS CAUGHT WITH HER PANTS DOWN and you want to reward her with giving her the presidency...what's the matter with you?

First of all Sen Clinton doesn't always agree with Rep Pelosi.

Second if let us say for the sake of argument, Sen Clinton waited for Rep Pelosi then Sen Obama waited both Sen Clinton and Sen Pelosi before making a decision?

I have said it before, and I'll say it again, I am not a rabid HRC supporter. In fact, I'm pretty neutral between her and McCain. I'd go with Nader if the guy had a chance in he11, but he doesn't.
Now tell me, rather than addressing my points against BO, why do you change the topic?

PS BO stated that he would have voted for the war at the time had he been able to do so. Of course, he pulled that speech from his website.

Was Sen Clinton the president who sent american soldiers to war or was it Pres Bush.=================================Isn't it different from giving the president, the commander in chief the authority. Was Sen Obama also in a difficult decision making situation or he just made a speech and then also said, I could also have supported the war??

Darfur? Is Darfur in China?

Posted by: Sandra | Apr 9, 2008 8:02:34 PM

Obama's approach is the right one. I'm sure China is going to do something about Darfur and Tibet once they feel the pressure. If on the other hand , like HRC advocates , we don't attend the opening, it simply means there's nothing else to do. What Obama suggests is in line with true diplomacy.

Obama, where Hillary leads he will follow! Hillary a true leader we can follow! That's it Hillary show him how leadership works! You Go Girl!

Posted by: russell | Apr 9, 2008 8:06:59 PM

I don't think he realizes what the opening ceremonies mean to the olympic athletes. He should put himself in their shoes. If he was an olympic athlete and worked hard for years and was then told he could not attend the opening ceremonies how would he feel?

Posted by: christie | Apr 9, 2008 8:07:24 PM

Megan,
I don't have to defend HRC because I was NEVER supporting her. My point was to question Obama, and you never addressed those points but instead assumed I was making pro-HRC rhetoric (when I never said anything in support of her directly).
Once again, I don't think that well of HRC. But I think even less of BO.

Posted by: JA | Apr 9, 2008 8:07:41 PM

Clinton has more military support from decision makers than McCain. Clinton has always provided measured responses. Obama is a parrot who is unqualified to render an opinion, much less a plan that is viable --- he continues to flip flop because he has no clue. Clinton has my complete support and confidence to end the Iraq occupation responsibly.

Posted by: jimt | Apr 9, 2008 8:11:40 PM

If you listen to Hillary Clinton's speech when she voted for the war in 2002 she said "THIS IS NOT A VOTE FOR ANY PREEMPTIVE WAR" She was right about Sadam Hussein and she was right to trust the OFFICE of the president.

She listed her experience and instructions should be done with that vote and President Bush didn't listen. and if she DIDN'T vote for this New York would without doubt have been attacked again. The state she is there to represent.

The truth of the matter is the administration lied. That is the fault of Americans who voted for him. That does not mean a senate should EVER take the presidential office's right to go to war. Thats a job requirement.

Help Wanted/ Experience Required.

Posted by: Josh | Apr 9, 2008 8:12:08 PM

Oh I get it now. Once every other democratic makes their decision about what to do, BO comes on board and gives a nice pretty little speech saying how he agrees with him, and making it seem like it was his idea all along.

I bet his speechwriters write two speeches every time a major even occurs....cuz ya never know what the polls will tell you is the right choice to make.

BO=lack of identity.

Boycott Obama, ignores his ignorant moronic bs. Tibetan were the rioters and stop twisting the facts by blaming the chinese. The future of Tibet is that it will prosper as part of China. The West has NO business in interfering other countries domestic policies with their bloody hands. The West invaded and killed millions of innocent veitnamese, iraqis and native indians. The West has no moral authority to criticise others on human rights. The West and their media are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

The Obama pronouncement came two hours after an exchange on CNN, when his surrogate told Blitz he didn't know what Obama's position on the Olympics was. Posted by: Stan Smith | Apr 9, 2008 8:16:37 PM

So based on what I have read so far, people who are for Obama say that whenever Clinton comes out and does something, she only does it to try to save her campaign, and when Obama says the exact same thing that Clinton says prior it is a sign of his leadership and how much he understands?!!! You people need to wake up- repeating what someone said doesn't make you qualified to be president-even a 5 year old can repeat what others say, but it doesn't mean they can lead a country. Plus whenever Obama is asked a question he never really answers the question, he either agrees with what someone else says, repeats the same thing or takes a neutral side. Clinton has been speaking out against China and human rights for over 15 years, but I guess people are too busy buying into Obama's borrowed words to notice it. It would be interesting to see what Obama has to say when there is no one else there to feed him the information- bet it contains a lot of uhs and silence. Just like yesterday's questioning to the General showed, a real leader is someone who asks the tough questions and doesn't back down, and that person isn't Obama!

If you don't agree with Clinton's call to boycott, what you do is to state that position clearly. You don't go one way, see that public opinion is against you, then switch to the other position.
For instance, here is how a thoughtful person would have responded:
"“I think the president should evaluate the situation as it evolves, perhaps granting more autonomy and talking with the Dalai Lama as a world figure. All of us condemn the brutality of human rights abuses. If I were him, I’d keep all my options open,” McCain said."

He only took so long because he needed to consult with Michelle on what stand he needed to take.

This was posted on another blog in relation to Senator Obama's call for a possible boycott of the opening ceremonies:

'A bit more measured and thoughtful than Sen. Clinton's statement. I think a big part of him believes that the Olympics is a time to unite the world despite our differences, so he's not as cut and dry as Hillary is. This a difference I've noticed about them for a while now, Hillary is more of a "right now," type and Obama is more of a "let's think about this" type. Not saying one is better than the other, it's just something I've noticed.

I'm glad that he included Darfur in his statement. That's something that's been a little left out of this conversation.'

I could not have said it better myself! Using critical thinking skills are a sign of a great leader. Senator Obama is a thinking man which is one of many reasons I support him.

This guy is nothing but a smooth talker. All he learned is from his Pastor. I hope the young people of this country will see through him. He cannot change anything. All he will do is pardon his Slum Lord after he gets indicted. His Presidency will be a disaster, something worse than Bush. He is in a dream to make the world run like a high school. It is not the world we live in. He is dreaming.

Sandy,
Two things:
1. Obama is now agreeing with Clinton to boycott the ceremonies.
2. Obama needs to "think about it first" because he has NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE. IT's called, lack of experience

What happened to us not having leverage because we owe China money ? He did a turnaround today? Oh, I know the pressure was on so he had to say something to sound Presidential. Pelosi already said something, Clinton said something, there's protests. He is not a leader.

I guess Obama is a true follower. He followed the unRev. Wright for 20 years and associated with Resko for 17 years. Is this an example of Obama's good judgement?

Obama was a deer caught in the headlights today when asked at a town hall meeting in PA what his position on boycotting the opening ceremonie
