I don't think he realizes what the opening ceremonies mean to the olympic athletes. He should put himself in their shoes. If he was an olympic athlete and worked hard for years and was then told he could not attend the opening ceremonies how would he feel?

If you don't agree with Clinton's call to boycott, what you do is to state that position clearly. You don't go one way, see that public opinion is against you, then switch to the other position.
For instance, here is how a thoughtful person would have responded:
