Obama Says He'd Consider Gore for Cabinet

April 02, 2008 2:28 PM

Ap_gore_obama_080402_mn_2   ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: While campaigning at a townhall in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., received an intriguing question.

"On global warming," a woman asked the Democratic candidate, "would you bring Al Gore in to a cabinet position to deal with the issue?"

Obama said he would consider the former vice president and 2000 Democratic nominee for a cabinet position, and also offered up another simple promise.

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

"Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He’s someone that I talk to on a regular basis, I’m already consulting with him in terms of these issues," Obama said.

Obama has said in the past that he speaks with Gore often.  Both Obama and Hillary Clinton, D-NY., are actively pursuing Gore's support. As an influential superdelegate, Gore's support could sway the opinions of other Democratic superdelegates who may ultimately decide which candidate will become the Democratic nominee.

Let's see...Obama and Clinton would hire Gore? Wow, what a revelation! Just about as shocking as if I put my Yorkie in his yard for a couple of hours, he'll come in with fleas......My Dad used to have a pet saying where he'd tell someone they were "as predictable as a Massachusetts Democrat". He was almost right. Democrats are predictable, in general.

Posted by: Dan | Apr 2, 2008 2:39:58 PM

DMK - Yeah!!!!! and Bill Clinton has been the only Democrat re-elected to a full 8 year term in almost 50 years!

When did the the Democrats start eating their own?

Posted by: s. valenti | Apr 2, 2008 2:52:20 PM

Those years have nothing to do with Hillary being better than OBAMA.

GO OBAMA!

Posted by: khan | Apr 2, 2008 2:52:52 PM

you meant he guy who said he invented the internet lol

Posted by: seah | Apr 2, 2008 2:54:18 PM

Obama would love Al Gore on board

Some one smart he can have al do all the work so he can take the credit.

One of Obama traits

Posted by: seah | Apr 2, 2008 2:56:06 PM

Maybe someone should point out to Gore and Obama that thirty years ago the scientific community was claiming the world would end in a little ice age. Wonder how that turned out? Why check with Obama and Gore of course. Or check with real world temperatures which show this is the coldest and most snow year on record in last thirty years. Over to you Obama and Gore.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 2, 2008 3:02:06 PM

Gore better put Obama in his lock box, I hope no one ask Obama anything about religion because the next thing we might hear is that Jesus will be part of his cabinet.

Obama is such a phony, funny I saw a interview with Gore and his wife just recently on TV and he sure did not act as if he was speaking to Obama on a regular basis as a matter of fact he told the interviewer that he wanted no part of being a peace broker in this race.

Maybe this is just another tale of Obama's and give him a couple of days he will then tell the public this is not what he said .

Posted by: SJ | Apr 2, 2008 3:05:23 PM

Looks like Edwards is out and Gore is in! That will make two canidates that can't win!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:09:40 PM

I can't believe Obama. He is such a jerk. Maybe Obama could be in Gore's cabinet. What an ego Obama has. Please I hope he loses.

Posted by: Kris | Apr 2, 2008 3:11:18 PM

HILARY CLINTON IS NOW IN THE RACE, NOT TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES FACING AMERICA, BUT TO JUST PROVE THAT SHE IS A CLINTON (“GOING ALL THE WAY”). SHE'S REALLY MADE A FOOL OF HELSELF BY COMPARING HERSELF TO ROCKY, A FICTIONAL CHARACTER. OBAMA IS THE RIGHT MAN, AND EXPERIENCED POLITICIANS HAVE RECOGNIZED THAT QUALITY IN HIM.

Posted by: REALIST | Apr 2, 2008 3:13:19 PM

To anyone who can honestly objective, this is concrete evidence that Obama will do or say anything to get elected. He is dragging Gore into the middle of this when he clearly stated he wanted no part in it.

Why would Al Gore be some underling to an Obama administration when he rejected running for president in the first place?

Obama has become PATHETIC.

Posted by: tomdavie | Apr 2, 2008 3:15:13 PM

Once again the junior senator is making presumptions. Why would a man of Al Gore's stature want to work for someone who hasn't a clue what he's doing? Gore needs another job with the federal government like he needs another ruling from the US Supreme Court! He can be much more effective on the world stage without being attached to one of the most internationally disrespected countries on the ever-warming planet. As far a I can tell Obambi's spew of hot air only contributes to the problem.

Posted by: La Chatte | Apr 2, 2008 3:15:20 PM

Hillary is in the race because she is getting votes and winning primaries.
Can Obama explain how Gore is change?

Can anyone but kool-aid drinkers claim Obama will win PA especially after his statement that a baby is punishment.

Posted by: geevill | Apr 2, 2008 3:18:08 PM

As a political analyst, I am quite convinced that the protracted rivalry within the Democratic presidential campaign, which has, for the most part, been instigated by Hilary Clinton’s insistence on “going all the way”, could only amount to political suicide for the Democratic Party. This, of course, in turn, would cost the Democrats not only the November election, but also would lead o the disenfranchisement of the next generation and those who feel neglected by history in this country. In this campaign, it has become obvious that Obama represents the voice of the youth and those who are tired of the old system and its politics of cronyism, and are craving real change in the political landscape in this country. On the other hand, Hilary Clinton represents mostly the working-class who nostalgically clings to the memories of the economic boom of the 90’s, the repeat of which, from an economic standpoint, is quite unlikely, given the gargantuan tasks ahead, such as, how to end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan (Which some people seem to have forgotten about. America has some 20,000 troops stationed there), and the existence of major international players such as China and India, whose demands for oil and other resources make the repeat of the 90’s nothing more than a just wishful thinking and a pipe dream. America needs an overhaul in its political scene, something that only a new voice that reflects the aspirations of the new generation can achieve. A personality whose charisma can rally people together and can bring about renewed hope. Of course, the word ‘Change’ can sometimes be frightening to some, simply because it might mean letting go of the old habits, which often die hard. However, judging by the state in which America has found itself, thanks to the current Administration’s abrasive policies, both home and overseas, change is inevitable and this can only lead to building a better and stronger America. America and Americans can not afford getting stuck in these political bickerings and divisive policies of ‘Us’ and ‘Them’ while countries like India and China are rising as the new politico- economic powerhouses.

Posted by: observe | Apr 2, 2008 3:18:45 PM

hopeful: Just because Hillary has a little cash flow problem why does that make her disqualified to be president! How does that make her different than millions of americans who are goint through the same struggle, paying the mortgage, filling up their cars, buying food, and paying for health care! Because she has had to struggle like the rest of us to make ends meet makes her more in touch with working americans and the economic problems that they have. So instead of a liability I think that her hardships have made her more qualified to turn around the economic problems of this country! We feel her pain and she feels ours!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:24:28 PM

Obama is too kind to offer Al Gore a spot. This is surely the tail wagging the dog.

Its aarogant, and a way to get Obamas name associated with Gore . Im certain big Al doesnt appreciate Obama trying to get a back door association after Gore refuses to endorse him in the first place.

Obama has used every single tactic I have ever heard of to get the nomination.

Posted by: tomdavie | Apr 2, 2008 3:30:21 PM

I don't know about you but I want to vote for the person who has the most money in their campaign coffers! That must mean that they are more qualified, who wants a president who has anything in common with the average american! And they call Hillary supporters dumb!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:30:23 PM

Doesn't it sound like he's just sucking up to voters and will say what they what to hear to get their votes? I think he's losing some of his shine, he used to sound original now he sounds like a regular politician who will say or do anything to get votes.

Posted by: Kardasia_Prime | Apr 2, 2008 3:34:07 PM

OBAMA IS GIVING AWAY JOBS HE DOES NOT HAVE TO GET SUPERDELEGATES.
GUESS WHAT, GORE AINT GONNA FALL FOR THIS.
MAYBE BILL RICHARDSON WILL, BUT NOT GORE-

Posted by: TJ | Apr 2, 2008 3:34:37 PM

Let's see what Hillary has to say about this one. Gore served with her husband for eight years. Gore has the experience she keeps yapping about. He was in office and knows about the possibility of the famous 3:00 a.m. call. Bravo, Obama!!!!!!!

Posted by: carol | Apr 2, 2008 3:35:06 PM

Maybe Obama is trying to nudge the Noble committe to nominate Wright for a Nobel Peace Prize! Then again maybe he should go for an Oscar!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:36:16 PM

STOP HATEING, OBAMAH IS THE MAN. STOP BEING AFRAID, THE ONLY THING PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF, IS HIS SKIN. THERE WILL BE A CHANGE, SO STOP THE MADNESS PLEASE.STOP, STOP, STOP.

Posted by: marian | Apr 2, 2008 3:38:05 PM

Instead of a presidential canidate Obama sounds like the local County Commissioner who hands out jobs to political hacks in return for buying votes! Is this what he is down to! Is this the new politics he talks about! Well looks like the same old you support me and I give you a job politics thats been going on forever! Obama just another politician that he says he is against!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:41:55 PM

Obama will "consider" Gore as a member of his cabinet. How very generous of him.

Posted by: countallthevotes | Apr 2, 2008 3:47:27 PM

He is going to run out of jobs before he can buy enough superdelegates to win! Well when he becomes president he can always create more jobs and expand the federal government like liberals usually do!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:48:26 PM

Hillary will stoop to the lowest of lows to gain the Presidency. She is horrible.

She is definately NOT the one to become President of this great country!

Posted by: Mrs. Tiggywinkle | Apr 2, 2008 3:49:07 PM

Gore has too much pride to sit in an Obama cabinet!!! Is this a late April's fool joke?????

Posted by: Cali | Apr 2, 2008 3:49:36 PM

I think he is fishing for Gore's endorsement. I think he will get it. Al Gore will bite the bait I think.

Posted by: dave2008elect | Apr 2, 2008 3:49:48 PM

Hey Obama did say he was going to create more new jobs I just did not know that they were all promised to superdelegates!

Posted by: russell | Apr 2, 2008 3:49:54 PM

RosiMas-That's Obama's strong point. His surrogates don't know enough to know that Obama is a moron. The perfect marriage.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 2, 2008 3:50:14 PM

Is this Obama's new job now? Insulting Al Gore's following? You have to be so desperate and so ignorant and so insultant. Another one who Obama is putting down? Far from being a compliment, Al Gore can become the Democratic nominee. I hope he answers. From sexism to environtism? Shame !

Posted by: Miariam | Apr 2, 2008 3:51:05 PM

I know Al Gore would be great - I hope Obama will soon decide on his choice for Vice-president - if he's smart he'll choose John Edwards - I can see an Obama/Edwards ticket - very strong.

Posted by: Erica Chase | Apr 2, 2008 3:53:16 PM

That is an insult to Gore -He was a VP. why would he take a demotion? and why would he take a paycut from his lucrative global warming gig?

Posted by: geevill | Apr 2, 2008 3:53:21 PM

WhiteHouse Watcher--- you just gave more reasons to vote for Hillary---

She can knock out anyone in my book--- and that's what we need a President. Not some 3rd rate, smooth-talking, racially confused, arrogant copycat.
(nto only does he copy words from Patrick Deval, he copies ideas from Hillary)

Obama is a dufus and I hope Gore doesn't fall for the "Richardson Bait"

Posted by: carpenter.nyc | Apr 2, 2008 3:55:13 PM

Doesn't that beat all....{1}like Gore would consider it...{2}that Obama is going to win...{3}who does Obama think he is.. {5} Obama turns my stomach the way he prances around like he is a king..{4}he is an #######......."That's all Folks".....

Posted by: Jesse James | Apr 2, 2008 3:55:57 PM

Erica Chase-Perhaps you didn't know that yesterday Elizabeth Edwards gave a health care speech and kicked Obama's and McCain's health care policy back into the 16th century where they belong. Good luck on the Edwards thing.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 2, 2008 3:56:32 PM

This guy (Obama) who has sat on the sidelines as both McCain and Clinton did the bipartisan work he says he will do someday , is so arrogant it makes one want to puke. If I were Obama I'd worry more about winning the nomination first before I'd start doling out jobs.
I love his lies in PA about how he doesn't take money from the oil industry nor from the financial institutions implicated in the subprime mess. Check it out people - this isn't an embellishment of something that did actually occur (Bosnia) rather it's a lie and he's counting on you to take him
at his word. The information is public record and easily accessible. Obama is not going to win the general election anyway because you won't see Republicans move over to Obama as the fairydust disappears above him, but rather you'll see the blue-collar voters, women and Latino's of the Democratic party help put McCain in.
When Obama doesn't win the general not only will his chances for a future Presidential run be nil but the elitist
powers that be that pushed Obama upon the Democratic party before he had the experience and/or record to take on a McCain- will be looking at a party where too many of their traditional supporters will have cast their vote for a Republican for the first time and tthere's a good chance they won't be back.

Posted by: alpaig | Apr 2, 2008 3:58:32 PM

You people are something else. It doesn't matter what Obama say, you make somehting negative out of it. The best thing to do is vote for who you are going to vote for and hope they win. All this bashing has gotten old, talk about the issues. Both the candiates have faults.

Posted by: Emilianna | Apr 2, 2008 4:00:29 PM

Barack Obama takes the liberty to demote Al Gore and to demote America to his standards. So much arrogancy does not take you anywhere Senator Obama. Please concede already.

To the people who said Clinton was the best Pres. Let me ask you this....which term? His first term...that was all George Sr., His second term...that was all Clinton. Every Pres. that first get's into office...truely wont know what they have done with the country until after their first term is over. Last I checked...the last 4 yrs of Clinton....werent so great...IMPEACHMENT anyone?
If Obama get's office...we wont know fully what he did or didnt do for our country until the next Joe Shmoe goes in or we re-elect him for a 2nd time.
Im still not sure whom I will cast my vote for...but it wont be for the pariah Hillary, or Old man River McCain...oops...I guess Im voting Obama.!
Either way the election goes...it comes down to new blood. We need new blood in office...wether it's inexperianced new blood or "experianced" blood....we need something new besides the Dictatorship that is the Bush/Clinton Era

Posted by: Michelle | Apr 2, 2008 4:01:17 PM

I would rather apologize to my Republican friends about not believing them about how crappy the Clintons are then cling to a false reality that the Clintons are who they say they are...But After Barack Beats Hillary he will then mop the floor with McBush because he has done something that the GOPers havent ever been able to do....He beat the Clintons!!!!

PS Rev Wright = Monica = Bush...except Rev Wright is the lesser of all evils because he didnt blackmail or kill anyone.

Posted by: Beka13 | Apr 2, 2008 4:02:11 PM

if it were just mccain that obama had to worry about, he would easily win the white house.....however, he has already shown and given ample ammunition to anti-American interest groups not unlike the swift boat vets that it is impossible for him to survive their inevitable negative campaign onslaught......if obama is the Democratic nominee, than mccain is assured of the Presidency, and that is not what America needs....

Posted by: chris | Apr 2, 2008 4:10:16 PM

Did anyone ever think that maybe since Gore is getting upthere in age, that being a Cabinet member might be what he wants? Ever think that maybe Aldoesnt like all the attention (BAD ATTENTION)he got for being associated with the Clintons. The man kissed his wife on stage and all hell broke loose. But since the Clintons got booted from the White House...no one seems to pay Al any mind except when he speaks on Global Warming. To me being a cabinet member is a job that is more involved in the issues of America...then a Pres or VP position!!

Posted by: chris | Apr 2, 2008 4:15:52 PM

It is obvious that Al Gore would be consulted by any President on this issue, whether or not it was an official cabinet position. Not as a scientist, which he is not, but as someone well versed in the global politics of climate change. Despite the conniption fits of the right-wing noise machine, Gore does have serious standing in the world. (And no, he never said he invented the internet.)

Bill Clinton blew it AGAIN.

On Sunday I believe, he had the opportunity to rack up some CA superdelegates

HE FAILED

Instead of talking up Hillarys "strength" he bashed Bill Richardson

One SD was quoted Bill had a "meltdown"

Obama is now leading by +2 in Penn according to the newest poll PPP

gained another SD today and recieved an endorsement from a former rep of Indiana

His lead in NC remains large, 18+

Sorry Hillary

Gore working for Obama, too funny! Obama couldn't carry water for Gore. I agree Dogsoldier, the thought of that racist bunch in the Whitehouse is nauseating. Don't forget we would also have Michelle Obama representing us as first lady. Let's hope the super's will give this a lot of thought.

Posted by: Firefighter | Apr 2, 2008 4:26:28 PM

Dogsoldier - The "scientific community" was definitely NOT "pushing little global ice age" thirty years ago. That was a couple of scientists speculating in the popular press. And if you think one cold winter has anything to do with global climate trends, your ability to comprehend this issue is obviously non-existant.

Posted by: jock59801 | Apr 2, 2008 4:26:53 PM

Thank you dogsoldier and whitehousewater. You have completely, thoroughly convinced me that both BHO and HRC are the WORST choices for America. McCain is a McPhoney who likes to bring out his badge of honor as POW as if I have not heard it a million times before. I sincerely thank you.

This is a sign that Barack Obama's candidacy is coming to an end. And with the next scandal manufactured by Karl Rove, it will magnanimous.

Posted by: WillieB | Apr 2, 2008 4:27:42 PM

Dogsoldier - Are you a moron? or do you just know absolutely NOTHING about Global warming. The fact it is the coldest year on record is a sign of global warming, not a contradiction to it. The temperature rises only a few degrees, not a noticeable change really, except when it starts melting ice at the polar ice caps, which has already started. The excess water in the oceans results in higher levels of precipitation, the past 5 years have seen record numbers of severe storms and weather. This is due to higher precipitation levels and the higher sea levels affecting weather patterns. Not that its gospel truth, but to get a bit of an idea in terms you can understand, try watching "The day after tomorrow".

YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS OF THE MAN BECAUSE HE'S MORE INELLIGENT THAN BILL OR HILARY. BILL DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH SENSE TO KEEP HIS PANTS ZIPPED. HE COMMITTED ADULTERY IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND YOU MORONS WANT TO PUT HIM BACK IN THE WHITE HOUSE. HILARY NEED TO STOP TALKING ABOUT ALL HER EXPERIENCE AND HOW SHE'S READY TO TAKE CHARGE ON DAY ONE. IT DOESN'T TAKE EXPERIENCE IT TAKES GOOD JUDGEMENT AND INSIGHT FOR WHICH SHE HAS NONE. ALL OF YOU HATERS NEED TO SHUT UP. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY KEEP YOUR THOUGHTS TO YOURSELF. Hillary should drop the DNC and run as an Independent in the General Election with Edwards or Gore. Obama would not stand a chance.

Posted by: GO INDIE | Apr 2, 2008 4:34:12 PM

Al Gore would be perfect as Secretary of the Environment. He would have the staff, resources and budget to make things really happen.

Obama, like Kennedy, would assemble the 'best and the brightest' as a team. Their unity and focus on profound issues would begin to put us back on track.

Gore would be delighted to make history, not just educate us to mistakes of the past.

Don't be petty and vote for McCain

Posted by: billy smith | Apr 2, 2008 4:34:59 PM

The Obama campaign has revealed something very interesting about America. It would appear that the wealthy, educated "elites" in America are no longer racists, since the overwhelming majority of them (that are Democrats or Independents) are flocking to Obama. However, the lower income "working class" does not seem to have moved in this direction as much, especially in the Midwest. Overall, this is a huge sign of progress, IMO, that the people with the money, power, and education are willing to vote for a black American; the rest of the country will catch up in the next decade or two.

Posted by: JustMe | Apr 2, 2008 4:35:04 PM

But any thinking mind must also remember these men must also be challenged by men and women of faith who are also challenged to call these man and women to task when they try and remake God in their own small image reflecting the hate and chaos and politics around them. That is exactly when God's word is needed most in order for us to see a better way. Wright failed to reflect the God I know and I have no difficulty called him to task over this matter. Here, Obama could have chosen to stand up and let his faith in the Christian God lead him to a better way as well and in turn Obama would have shown us all a better way than Wright's. He did not. I left my own church for just such a call after challenging my minister who refused to reflect God as a loving God for all of us. That was my call. I expect no different of Obama than I expect of myself.

it is impossible for obama to win in November....not because of mccain, but because of this year's version of swift boat vets.....only Senator Clinton has survived their attacks for the past 14 years.....only Senator Clinton is capable of withstanding them this fall....

That IS generous to offer Gore a place in his "administration" that he doesn't even have yet. I thought Obama said Washington DC was broken and that he was going to "change" everything. Hmmm sounds like politics as usual and a bunch of back slaps for all those endorsements he's been racking up by those established politicians. He's got to have something in his resume!

OMG - obama is certainly getting desperate isn't he? And HE is NOT going to play "politics" to get elected? Just what do you think this move is all about? Gore, to many Democrats should have been elected in 2000 and since he wasn't, many Dems feel he was cheated. They would vote for him in a heartbeat and obama is using this for his own campaign. What an arrogant manipulator. How many of his followers will actually not see through this?
What a lying, condescending piece of horse pucky this idiot is. And this is what you want for a President?
More than likely it was his "mentor and advisor" the "esteemed" Reverend Wright that came up with this one. I fail to understand why his followers don't see through this. Next there will be that "holy picture" of him again, the one of him on the stairs, being so holy looking up, while a bright light descends upon his holy body. Ugh. Talk about dirty politics. Obama the dirty one with the hate the whites advisor.
Shame on this country then three times for voting for the candidates that continue to destroy America: G.W. Bush twice and now obama. God Bless America, but not obama.

Tomasz-So how did the little ice age of thirty years ago turn out, Tomasz? Facts are ugly things. Temperatures go through cycles, sometimes yearly, sometimes by decades, and sometimes centuries. Granted one cold year does not a trend make but should cold years follow in succession who knows? Guess the dust bowl was also a change in cycle back in the day, you think? In any case the ice in the Arctic is at its thickest in ten years according to the Inuit in the North. That's new.
