Obama Shifts Post-Debate Attack from Clinton to McCain

April 18, 2008 4:28 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: At a town hall meeting in Erie, PA, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama stepped away from his criticism of the debate and Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, finding a target today in the presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain.

Obama blasted the Arizona senator for comments made in a Thursday interview with Bloomberg News  where McCain said "I think if you look at the overall record and millions of jobs have been created, et cetera, et cetera, you could make an argument that there’s been great progress economically over that period of time. But that's no comfort. That's no comfort to families now that are facing these tremendous economic challenges."

Today Obama responded, "Only somebody who spent two decades in Washington could make a statement as disconnected from the hard times we are facing all across the nation."

Obama then listed all of the problems economically Americans have withstood during President Bush’s administration, ticking through them one by one, "Here's what John McCain calls great progress: we went through the first period of sustained economic growth since WWII that saw incomes drop. Eleven million more Americans don’t have healthcare, two million more Americans are out of work, millions of families are facing foreclosure, the poverty rate has gone up, you are working harder for less, you are paying more for tuition, you're paying more for groceries, more at the pump, that's what John McCain calls great progress."

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

Senator Obama, earlier in the town hall in Erie said that the economy has expanded, but it's been rough for people, "Our economy actually expanded over the last seven years, that's true. But here's the thin: that was the first economic expansion where average incomes went down, not up. That's never happened before."

Obama is embarking on a five day tour of the Keystone State leading into the Pennsylvania primary, hitting small towns along the way, and will continue to talk about the economy. The Senator started his day with a tour of The Erie Bolt Co. factory.

"How could somebody who has been traveling across this country, somebody who came to Erie, PA and say we've made great progress?" Obama questioned of McCain.

The McCain campaign immediately sent out a statement in response, saying that Obama intentionally twisted McCain’s words, "American families are hurting and Barack Obama is being recklessly dishonest," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said, "Obama is guilty of deliberately distorting John McCain's comments for pure political gain, which is exactly what Senator Obama was complaining about just yesterday."

Mccain is going to so fry Obama if Obama wins the election. He dosnt have the same considerations Clinton has a democrat. McCain can be the next president since there are so many skeletons in Obama's closet.

Obama is nothing more then a lying hypocrite. He is unelectable and after the debate it is obvious that Clinton is the far superior candidate. It is time to vote smart and vote Clinton.

I like McCain's react to Obama, 'OBama should feel guilty', 'Obama hope you don't mind', 'Obama conceived the country'... those kind ofs strong words.

McCain, great.

As I said, if no Hillary, I'm for McCain absolutely. Obama NO WAY!

What a class act. Geeze.

If Obama is a democrat nominee, all my families will vote Mcain. We all voted for Obama in primary. He lost our trust in his judgment.

When is Jimmy Carter going to endorse Obama? I think he should do it now, while he's posing with Hamas. Hamas endorsed him too. We can make a double endorsement party!

Every Hillary supporter I know (including my grandmother and all her pals) are voting for McCain if Obama is nominated. Obama doesn't stand a chance. And Obama has apparently (according to polls) united the GOP behind McCain.

Obama is toast in the general.

Come on ABC! Focus on real issues to help us pick a president. Whose funding their campaigns? How will they get us out of Iraq? How will we free ourselves of our oil-dependency?

No more cheap "character" stories on the candidates.

Posted by: Average Guy | Apr 18, 2008 5:19:32 PM

I was very dissappointed with the debate questions by ABC News. This is a highly respected media outlet that reports facts not induendo. With all the topics affecting Americans, such as gas approaching $4.00 per gallon (some places $5.00), our infrastructure is falling apart, the dollars is below the Euro, your anchors/host of the debate could not ask Obama and Clinton anything pertinent to us the American people. "Boo whoo" on you ABC...we missed an important opportunity. Why is cereal approaching $6.00 a box and wheat bread $4.00 a loaf. Could you have asked anything pertaining to the kitchen table? Really disappointed!!!

I amazed and depressed by the commentary left by supposed 'ordinary citizens.' If this is what we have come down to, then the rest of the world is completely justified in the opinion of the US as a country of ignorant, arrogant philistines.

I am so disapointed in the democrats. How could the leadership let this happen? Obama is going to get destroyed by the republicans. His character and background has the republican attack dogs licking their chops.

This contest is already over. If Clinton loses this thing I am going to vote for McCain. The dems don't deserve to win if they let this travesty happen.

And what about Michigan and Florida? If they had been allowed to vote then Clinton would have won easily. Now those states will be so pissed off they are going to McCain. I've had it with the democrats.

Posted by: reason | Apr 18, 2008 5:33:33 PM

My friends in blogworld..........Do you smell Hillary in the oven? Hmmmmm, smells gamey, tough, yet in the cooker.

On the other hand. McCain is by far an easier opponent than Clinton.

Just picture McCain's face when the teleprompter goes blank. No teleprompter, no McCain. It's like little kids hypnotized by watching Barney on television. Classic.

Everyone may not like who the next POTUS will be, but deep down inside, they know. Denial just happens to be the last layer of the human defense mechanism. Ohhhhhh, but when reality sets in, LIGHTS OUT.

Posted by: Common Sense | Apr 18, 2008 5:36:44 PM

ABC has spoiled, perhaps forever, the proud tradition of Howard K. Smith, Sam Donaldson and Peter Jennings with its performance at the latest "debate." A Presidential contest should bring out the best in the fourth estate, but ABC has contributed greatly to the dumbing down of the American electorate. It's not a question of whether Obama can "take it." What possible good did those first 45 minutes do for our understanding the candidates' abilities to be President? None.

Posted by: Bill | Apr 18, 2008 5:45:15 PM

You know, in all actuality, Obama has really taken it easy on Clinton by just sticking to the issues.

She, on the other hand, has thrown what her camp calls the kitchen sink at him and after all of that, they find themselves in deeper quicksand.

So sad to see Hillary pulling her Moms out of the house to help her campaign. Boy, is she desperate, or what?

Gimme a break

Those of you who watch Fox News must be the same people who used to giggle when the teacher used her middle finger to point at something on the board. If you watch a longer clip, you will hear the crowd roar, even rise to their feet cheering, at Obama's words. He scratched his lip first, then a few moments later scratched his nose. Scandalous, eh? People just don't like the Clintons. There is no way she will get the nomination. She should get out and endorse Obama so we can end the disastrous Bush years. That is all there is to it. Democrats do not like the Clinton style of slash and burn politics.

Posted by: Sydney | Apr 18, 2008 5:54:34 PM

The fact:
------------------------

There won't be nominee of Dems until convention..

The final nominee will be picked by DNC after all the pending issues have been resolved and statisfied by all the Dems.....

If the issues can not be resolved properly, the Dems won't be united and will be defeated for sure in GE.

So who will be final nominee is still up the sky...

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 18, 2008 5:56:20 PM

And that is why Obama (a freshman senator and a rookie) is beating The Clinton machine in every category. Pledged delegates, number of states won, popular vote, fundraising...etc. You name it guys. He is ahead of her in everything. The people are helping him take on the Clinton machine and beat it because they don't want Hillary. But she doesn't seem to get it. Howard Dean will probably have to call security on her and have her escorted out.

Posted by: Sydney | Apr 18, 2008 5:58:04 PM

Hillary defeated Obama on Women vote, White vote, Latino vote, Asian vote and most blue states...

The only reason Obama is leading is because of the stupid Dems' primary system, he won't be in the race if followed by Reps or GE's rule...He just won red or black states and overwhelming black votes? If he can't win Penn, then it proves again he can't win big states and can't win white vote....In the end, he can't win the general election...So what is he good at?

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 18, 2008 6:03:50 PM

Obama did give her the finger!!! I thought that I was the onlyone that noticed.

No one likes Hillary's relentless attacks, sarcasm, and complaining. It is very unsavory to say the least. I much prefer how Obama always seems to take the high road, and shows some restraint in this process. How long do you think the latest incarnation of Hillary, "the shrinking violet" nice Hillary will last? Not long at all- she will be back in the "attack dog" mode within a few days. "Nice" is just not her nature. Her true nature is to attack hard, and treat this as her husband says, a "contact sport". This is her true nature, the one she feels most comfortable. She is a pretty good actress, though, I have to admit that. She has morphed her personality and voice all over the place during this campaign- so much so that you would suspect that she had multiple personalities. Which Hillary will show up tomorrow. If you want to see something interesting, wait for her reaction after her loss sinks in. I wouldn't want to be Bill. They have already booked their vacation getaway in Martha's Vineyard for the month of September- seriously! In the midst of a democratic run for the White House! So much for getting out there to help Obama in the national election. Thankfully, it's all but over now.

Obama did not give Clinton the middle finger. It has ben de-bunked. The same picture on other websitse show both fingers are up. It's sad you Clinton supporters focus on something this trivial.

Posted by: Tiffany Martinson | Apr 18, 2008 6:13:58 PM

The Clinton camp is running out of straws to pull. WHAT DO WE DO NEXT???

Imagine the morale of a campaign that knows regardless of what it does, it has virtually no chance of winning the war. When you see former cabinet members of the Clinton Administration supporting Obama, that's gotta sink in on the cerebellum.

They know. Hillary is done.

Numbers don't lie.

Since Feb, Obama has acquired 80 superdelegates to Clinton's 5.

She's getting blown out in all categories.

She's gotta be embarrassed to be the initial frontrunner and virtual lock for POTUS.

Listen kiddies.....Never underestimate your opponent and always maintain the highroad with they become negative. Negativity is the first sign that you're winning.

Posted by: Common Sense | Apr 18, 2008 6:23:50 PM

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 18, 2008 6:25:37 PM

An article today from one of the major new outlets described on of Hillary's rant stops at the Haverford Campus in PA, and I found it amusing that the Hillary staffers and video guys were walking around the campus approaching groups of women to interview and organize, asking "is anyone here a Clinton supporter?". Guess what? No one supported her! How embarrassing and demoralizing for Hillary's people! College kids and professors don't buy into Hillary's sarcastic and caustic tactics.

Senator McCain is head and shoulders above Hillary and Clinton. He may be older, but he is also wiser and he loves America. Whenever you love someone or something you always take beter care of it and McCain has certainly shown how much he loves our country. Obama is a good speaker, but we don't know enough about him and he does not have enough experience to be president and neither does Hillary. My vote goes to Senator McCain

Posted by: sharonr | Apr 18, 2008 6:40:48 PM

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 18, 2008 6:47:10 PM

When people care about which party will present his/her best interest, they will vote for whoever the party nominee is....
When people care about which candidate he/she likes, they will vote for individual....

If the hatred has been rooted deeply towards either Dems candidate inside supporters from each side, it means Dems party is divided and there will be more Dems either stay home or vote for the counter-party in G.E....

It should be all thanks to DNC to make its primary undecisive and unconvincing......

Without a united party, Dems will be defeated for sure....

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 18, 2008 6:51:31 PM

Let's face it...Obama has had an easy time of it with the press. He did not handle the pressure well. Politics are tough and he's the media's darling. I give ABC credit for not giving him the pass he has previously enjoyed. However, this process has gone on way too long. Primary season should be two weeks long and if you are running for office you should relinquish your Senatorial position.

Posted by: pt | Apr 18, 2008 7:05:43 PM

S, the recession of 2008. I guess you know the economy better than Mr. Greenspan and 99% of the credible financial experts. If this country doesn't get rid of the GOP this recession will turn into a full-blown depression, just like Hoover. Hoover, Nixon, bush, some people never learn.

Posted by: pt | Apr 18, 2008 7:10:20 PM

Don - This is an energy based economy which ever way you want to cut the cards. Everything in North America depends on energy. Now, what do you think is gonna happen in the middle east when the troops come home? If you're smart enough you know the middle east will erupt in fames and the price of oil will seem cheap now in comparison to what it will be then. And when Iraq falls to the fundamentalists, and it will, then Afghanistan will fall next. None of us can avoid those facts. And if Iran get their nuke, and you know they will, and then threaten Israel, who is sitting on 300+ nukes by best estimates, then all hell will break loose. On our watch. I sincerely hope and pray I'm wrong but the tea leaves don't look good as I write.

Posted by: S | Apr 18, 2008 7:18:19 PM

Historically, if Hillary leaded or tied poll before state primary, she always won...

Why? Because a lot of her supporters are low or middle income people who typically won't be picked as polling sample...

More is that Hillary alway won over late deciders since they have doubt about obama and didn't fall in love with him at first glance...

It seems clear who has the good judgment.

Posted by: boneheaded, chicago | Apr 18, 2008 7:45:26 PM

The most important issue facing our country since 9/11 has been the security of our country. President Bush has made mistakes in some areas, but so far, since 9/11 and on his watch our country has not suffered another bombing. I'm certain there are threats made against us daily. Even though we have many problems facing us - none compares to the safety of our country. Senator John McCain is the most qualified to be our next president.

Posted by: sharonr | Apr 18, 2008 7:46:47 PM

I still cannot believe that people out there that are Pro-Hillary or Pro-Obama say that they will vote for McCain if there person is not the democratic nominee. I support one of them, I don't even have to say which one, because the main reason is that we beat McCain in the fall. You may have strong feelings for or against either candidate but listen to yourselves. How can McCain be your next choice, all that it means is that you are like young child... that if you don't get what you want you are going to defy everyone. Do you really think that John McCain is better for this country than either one of the Democrats? Seriously listen to yourself. If you really feel that way, just don't vote at all in the primaries or the general.

Democrats have to win in November! I will vote for either Hillary or Obama, I would prefer my favorite...but either one is better than another 4 years of Repulican leadership.

Posted by: whoareyou | Apr 18, 2008 7:49:52 PM

Hey, pt - do you know Obama thinks the Clinton and Bush administrations are the same. So, in his mind, they are both in recession. Perhaps, you need to teach your candidate one thing or two so he won't say stupid things like during the Clinton and Bush administrations people are bitter and thus they do not vote for him.

sharonr, the TRUTH is that this country is less safe and has far more enemies because of the bush/cheney policies. People are beginning to realize that, and that is why Mc-More-War will get blown away in the fall. Let's go from the worst-in-history to the Best-In-The-Future. Obama 2008!

pt, the truth is you do not know that we have more enemies because of the bush/cheney policies. But, we do know that our country has not been attacked since 9/11. In my opinion Obama is not experienced enough to be president and I would rather have Senator McCain answering the phone. To have change for change's sake is not a good idea!. Senator McCain is an American hero, and great leader who is able to work with Democrats and Independents.

sharonr, when things are in such a mess you need to be brave and accept that change will be better for everyone. Obama will be able to bring this country together, he'll be able to talk with world leaders. Today the mayor of NY (Michael Bloomberg) said that it will be nice to have an adult in the white house for a change. We all know what he meant by that. Hopefully you will have the courage to try something different and vote for someone that has everyone's interest at heart, not just the top 3% of the population. Obama 2008!

whoareyou

Now why would a moderate democrat forsake his beliefs to vote for a leftists if the republican candidate more closely represents his view?

People who vote their party without thinking twice about it have their votes negated by the extremists on the other side. It's the thinkers in the middle who analyze issues and make informed (not emotional) decisions.

Is obama going to unite the country the way he united the democratic party, I think 30% of the dem party plan to vote for McCain not obama.

We all know what a leftist will do with the changes you suggest. Throw more money at the problems and say 'What a good boy am I'.

pt, How do you think Obama is going to make things better? For your info, I am an Office Manager so I'm not in the top 3%. I do not believe that Obama has everyone's interest at heart - it is hard for me to vote for someone who has chosen to be associated with people who belittle our country and our leaders. I do have courage to not vote for someone just because they are different, but instead I will vote for someone who will take care of America and her citizens.
