Obama Shifts Post-Debate Attack from Clinton to McCain

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: At a town hall meeting in Erie, PA, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama stepped away from his criticism of the debate and Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, finding a target today in the presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain.

Obama blasted the Arizona senator for comments made in a Thursday interview with Bloomberg News  where McCain said "I think if you look at the overall record and millions of jobs have been created, et cetera, et cetera, you could make an argument that there’s been great progress economically over that period of time. But that's no comfort. That's no comfort to families now that are facing these tremendous economic challenges."

Today Obama responded, "Only somebody who spent two decades in Washington could make a statement as disconnected from the hard times we are facing all across the nation."

Obama then listed all of the problems economically Americans have withstood during President Bush’s administration, ticking through them one by one, "Here's what John McCain calls great progress: we went through the first period of sustained economic growth since WWII that saw incomes drop. Eleven million more Americans don’t have healthcare, two million more Americans are out of work, millions of families are facing foreclosure, the poverty rate has gone up, you are working harder for less, you are paying more for tuition, you're paying more for groceries, more at the pump, that's what John McCain calls great progress."

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

Senator Obama, earlier in the town hall in Erie said that the economy has expanded, but it's been rough for people, "Our economy actually expanded over the last seven years, that's true. But here's the thin: that was the first economic expansion where average incomes went down, not up. That's never happened before."

Obama is embarking on a five day tour of the Keystone State leading into the Pennsylvania primary, hitting small towns along the way, and will continue to talk about the economy. The Senator started his day with a tour of The Erie Bolt Co. factory.

"How could somebody who has been traveling across this country, somebody who came to Erie, PA and say we've made great progress?" Obama questioned of McCain.

The McCain campaign immediately sent out a statement in response, saying that Obama intentionally twisted McCain’s words, "American families are hurting and Barack Obama is being recklessly dishonest," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said, "Obama is guilty of deliberately distorting John McCain's comments for pure political gain, which is exactly what Senator Obama was complaining about just yesterday."

Mccain is going to so fry Obama if Obama wins the election. He dosnt have the same considerations Clinton has a democrat. McCain can be the next president since there are so many skeletons in Obama's closet.

Obama is nothing more then a lying hypocrite. He is unelectable and after the debate it is obvious that Clinton is the far superior candidate. It is time to vote smart and vote Clinton.

You will find it very interesting: every time Obama attacks McCain, he just ended up to embarrass himself...

Please fix your inner enemy first before jump out to shoot..

I like McCain's react to Obama, 'OBama should feel guilty', 'Obama hope you don't mind', 'Obama conceived the country'... those kind ofs strong words.

McCain, great.

As I said, if no Hillary, I'm for McCain absolutely. Obama NO WAY!

Fox didn't "make up" the middle finger fiasco, it's on tape for all too see. And the audience seems to think he did it also - because they start laughing.

What a class act. Geeze.

If Obama is a democrat nominee, all my families will vote Mcain. We all voted for Obama in primary. He lost our trust in his judgment.

When is Jimmy Carter going to endorse Obama? I think he should do it now, while he's posing with Hamas. Hamas endorsed him too. We can make a double endorsement party!

On 4/22, Penn will decide who God will bless...

Every Hillary supporter I know (including my grandmother and all her pals) are voting for McCain if Obama is nominated. Obama doesn't stand a chance. And Obama has apparently (according to polls) united the GOP behind McCain.

Obama is toast in the general.

Somebody used Fox News and unbiased in the same sentence? Now that's funny!

I have a premonition that no matter who is gets the nomination, Fox News will be pro-Republican. Wow I'm good!

Posted by: Oldgaman | Apr 18, 2008 5:14:41 PM

Come on ABC! Focus on real issues to help us pick a president. Whose funding their campaigns? How will they get us out of Iraq? How will we free ourselves of our oil-dependency?

No more cheap "character" stories on the candidates.
