Obama to his Surrogates: Be Careful
April 10, 2008 2:25 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Without naming names, at a rally in South Bend, Indiana Obama vaguely addressed another controversy spurred by one of his surrogates, and warned his supporters to be careful what they say about his opponents.
On Monday, Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), an Obama supporter, cased a dust up when he criticized Senator John McCain in an interview with the "Charleston Gazette."
Rockefeller was quoted as saying, "McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit….What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues."
The McCain campaign was quick to call for Obama to denounce Rockefeller's statement, saying it was an insult to the men and women serving in America's military.
In Indiana Obama, snuck in a line of warning to his surrogates, a presumed response to Rockefeller’s criticism of McCain's service, "I respect John McCain. I revere the service he's provided for our country. And I think he deserves credit for that. And some of my supporters and surrogates, they’ve got to be careful about that. We always have to be respectful of our opponents."
The Obama campaign also released a statement reiterating that Obama does not agree with Rockefeller’s assertion of McCain's service. On Tuesday Senator Rockefeller released a statement himself saying he made an inaccurate and wrong analogy, and that he has apologized to McCain.
This recent surrogate comment is just he latest episode in a long string of candidate's surrogates causing controversy this campaign season; most notably on Obama's team: one of his top foreign policy advisors, Samantha Powers, stepped down after calling Hillary Clinton a "monster."

OBAMA ONLY CAUTIONED TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING CRITIZED FOR THE COMMENT NOW. IF OBAMA TRULY RESPECTED MCCAIN HE WOULD HAVE A MADE A RETRACTION IMMEDIATELY. WHAT A JERK OBAMA IS AND HIS STAFFERS.

Like most of us, Obama's surrogates don't know what Obama stands for. Everyone has to wait until the puppet has his strings pulled.

And what, exactly, are Obama's skills?
Posted by: S | Apr 10, 2008 2:42:03 PM
Barack Obama,
This is the act of a "typical lawyer person" attempting to distance themselves from what is said by people closely affiliated with their campaign. The fact is if one of your surrogates screws up that person needs to be publicly denounced and removed from your campaign. That is our expectation for good clean government. This slick manuevering will not do the trick.

Obama, does he even have a spine?

The only UNITY i see in Obama's campaign is in the way they attack everyone that doesn't support their views or campaign....How sad that is coming from the campaign of hope and change. Obama how about you tell your supporter Jimmy Carter not to meet with Hamas? STOP DECEIVING THE VOTERS OBAMA. EVERY THING ABOUT YOU STAND FOR LIES LIES AND MORE LIES, in your words A CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN? NO NO NO.

Obama just hasn't read that part about the buck stopping at the top. Better shoot his surrogate than accept responsibility of what that surrogate said.
What a snake!

Oh, haters.
He didn't have to say anything and just leave it as is.
He definitely did more than I would have done with regards to a Bush Clone who's going to lose to either a woman or a biracial man.
What a loser.

Common Sense, thank you for making sense of the non sense being put out by WestCoastMessager=S and all HillLovers, Hill the Bosnian General, and good friend of McCain will have never presnetd their apologies or asked for caution from their surrogates as proudly done by Obama. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Obama's skills are pretty obvious to me: he is very intelligent, is a good writer, and has a good grasp of the issues, he understands what messages resonate with voters and does a good job of delivering them, and he has run a very efficient, very effective campaign.
And Hillary's skills would be . . . .

For the Record.......
For McCain supporters who think he will win the General Election against Barack Obama, the gullibility is expected, but not a surpise. Let me tell you why.
McCain doesn't have full support from the Neanderthal Republican Base. You know, the angry warmongers?
McCain doesn't have full support from those independents after he dumbly stated that he fully supports Bush's Tax cuts and making them permanent after opposing them.
If you think American will continue down the road of demise while the citizens of this country sit idly by and watch, I would suggest a mental evaluation, QUICK!
It's funny to see those who made fun of HOPE are now hoping the bejesus out of everything in WISHING he could become President.
Even his own party doesn't think he can win. Are you that gullible? Obviously so.

So far, the question of Obama's skills seem to be centered around his speaking abilities. One included intelligence but his ineptitude in controlling his surrogates negates that argument.
So, other than being a good Baser, what are his skills beyond consistently being 'present'?
Posted by: Aston | Apr 10, 2008 3:08:24 PM
This coming from the man who stopped at nothing to throw Geraldone Ferraro under the bus. Nonsense and garbage.
Posted by: beebop | Apr 10, 2008 3:09:02 PM
Here we are again blaming Obama for something he didn't say. If we blamed Hillary ever time one of her "people" said anything negative about one of the candidates she'd be apologizing the rest of the campaign.
Posted by: cindy | Apr 10, 2008 3:10:57 PM
It's gotten to the level of absurd, everyone having to apologize for everything, although I do like Obama's approach to be respectful of one's opponents. A nice change of pace...
Posted by: Brianna | Apr 10, 2008 3:11:42 PM
The way Obama seems to inspire his supporters to demonize his opponents is fascinating. Again, it's like a cult. If you question or somehow are perceived to stand in the way of our messiah you are evil, you are a monster like Hillary, you are a non-human killer like McCain. His telling his supporters to tone it down sounds kind of like Jim Jones cautioning his followers to put on the right face, we've got them fooled, let's not blow it now.
Posted by: hopesprings52 | Apr 10, 2008 3:14:29 PM
Ever noticed that Obama doesn't say ANYTHING until the coast is clear. He usually waits for Hillary to speak first. Then, the string-pullers that control the puppet tell him what he believes.
Posted by: Aston | Apr 10, 2008 3:16:50 PM
The original fuel for the Obama campaign was YES WE CAN! Now, it's YES WE WILL!
Remember when he started and cynics overlooked him? They briefly remembered the 2002 speech at teh Democratic convention, but nobody talked about Rev Wright then. They loved that speech.
Now that he's the front runner for President, cynics everyday are pulling hair and teeth out trying to figure out. WHAT'S WITH THIS GUY!!! WE CAN'T GET HIM!!! AAARRRRGGHHHHH!
The best you can bring against him is John McCain? The guy who gets seconds and thirds from his own party?
He will lose. That is all.
Posted by: Common Sense | Apr 10, 2008 3:17:06 PM
Interesting how we are quick to attacking whatever Obama does, says, or recommends.
C'mon people we are AMERICANS. We analyze things carefully and intelligently, extrapolate and then make conclusions. Seems to me like all we do here is attack and smear, divide and conquer. What we need to know is that the American community is quite complex and like a system that has hysteresis, you can't predict the output without looking at the history of the input.
This is the case w/ Obama. he looks at things very differently and my observation is that most americans don't apply same philosophy and are this at odds w/ his approach to problem solving.

Aston,
So you're one of those that still doesn't understand the intent of the 'present' vote. You aren't alone, there are several people that need the explanation more than once.
Voting 'present' 130 times out of 4,000 votes meant there were 130 issues that needed additional discussion and/or negotiations. If you don't agree with an issue, would you just let it stand as it is and tell someone you agree or disagree without exception?
Or do you somehow signal that you don't like the way the issue was written and lets address how we can change it to make it better?
Or maybe to you, issues that are black and white don't actually have a gray area that can only be seen with the magnifying (present vote) glass.
I'll take a maybe over a yes/no if there is a missed issue raised by someone else....its called being open minded. Apparently that is something that can't be taught, you have to actually listen to make a difference.

LA in Indiana
Nobody else even came near voting 'present' 130 time. Note even close!
Maybe Obama needed more time to ponder the issues than others because his puppet-meisters weren't there to pull the strings at the time. Or is there a better reason that I'm overlooking?

So...Hillary did not have to apologize for whatever Ferrero said.

@Jo,
McCain already has the nomination, BO and HRC are both still in dogfight. The real place of McCain will be clear when the dems have a nominee. You have to compare apples and apples, not apples and oranges and that is why I don't trust the MSM/polls. All they do is confuse and try to shape our thought patterns - Too bad...
Posted by: kanobi11 | Apr 10, 2008 3:37:50 PM
J,
Keep believing your "so called polls".
They're no different than watching American Idol. Didn't you know that they're MADE FOR TV?
I know you're smarter than that. Deep down inside, there's a little voice telling you MCCAIN WILL LOSE. Don't deny the little voice.
Keep rhetoric alive, though. That's what you're good at and I could use some entertainment throughout my day.

To all the Obamaniacs who say McCain will lose, I say, how is that guy (Ned Lamont?) doing as senator from Conneticut? You know the one, the one who you said would beat Lieberman to a pulp because of Lieberman's war views. In a Blue State.
How is he doing? Oh wait. Lieberman beat him to a pulp.
Oops. My bad.
Lol.
How about some more predictions? They make us laugh.

What is so fustrating is that the Obama camp and "fans" are always saying what a clean fight he leads, however I have seen the most backhanded, passive agressive mudslinging from his people...then all you get is "oops I'm sorry, I didnt mean it" It's disgraceful and that is why I have no trust in Obama.

William Ayers, people…William Ayers!
Someone aspiring to the Presidency of the United States does not nurture an ongoing personal and professional relationship with a known and unrepentant domestic terrorist. Let alone sit in that church listening to that garbage for 20 years. He's unfit to command and will bring ruin to our party in November.

Did you see on Morning Joe today, when they showed Obama at a Townhall Meeting yesterday, and a woman in the audience asked him, "how he could be sitting in church for 20 years listening to the anti-semetic remarks of jews coming from Rev. Wright.
Obama went on to answer her by saying "I disagree with what Rev. Wright said about the jewish people, In fact I have a strong backing from the Jewish community in my home state".
LIES! LIES! LIES!
Prove it Obama, I live in Illinois. I don't think so. If anything, the Catholics and the Jewish people out here are totally upset with you and your reverend.
When they went back to Joe Scarbrough after he said this, Joe gave a look like "Teah, whatever!!!!

Common Sense, Barack comes off as arrogant in debates. Normal Americans won't buy it. They respect a guy like McCain. And the polls show McCain ain't losing support because of the war or economy.
Again, nice try. But just as in 2000 and 2004, it will be fun to see people like you with your mouths open in shock at the election outcome. Can't wait.

What the heck is going on with these Americans running for president that they are so dern sensitive when someone says something they don't like. So what!! Call the person up and blast him or her out that's all. Square off!! But all this firing this one or that one because he or she said something about the other one's campaign or about the candidate is just ridiculous. How in the world is the president supposed to be the tough American president he images to be when he can't even take an offbeat comment about him or her? Get over it and move on and next time you say what you want about him or her.

Cynics now want to say he can't win against MCcain because of the "polls". Funny, funny people.

Hillay and McCain web site do have strict requirements if you are a US citizen living overseas and want to donate to their campaigns.
I always wondered about Obama because he had a list of countries on his site and no requirements at all to say who was giving him funds, places like Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Africa, yes I know there are Americans in these places' but if you don't require some kind of proof as to who is giving you money how do you know what source this money is coming from.

GS - a Woman supporting a woman because she is a woman is not somethig to be proud of. HRC is a good candidate, but I do not believe she is the right candidate for the office now. It has nothing to do with her sex. It has to do with the level of honesty and integrity she has shown in this campaign and the quality of her policies. I don't want blacks to vote for Obama becasue he is is black and I don't want old white men or veterans to vote for McCain because of his status. Listen to the candidates and read what they want to do. Ignore the knucklehead stuff like what someone they knew said or did and listen to them. Who has been caught in a lie and how did they handle it. I don't expect them to be perfect. that is unrealistic. I expect exaggeration and fervor. I look for knoewledge, judgement and a dedication to running the country for all the people and not just who is in front of them at the time.

Exactly, Rondainoregon! It's time for a woman like Hillary who can take the heat. Obama's titanic ego is made of glass.
Speaking of Obama's dubious past, a friend of mine from Chicago just wrote me the following message after I blasted him for unleashing Obama on the rest of us, and then I asked him to reclaim his former state senator. He replied:
"You know who you can blame for Obama? Jeri Ryan. She divorced her husband, Jack Ryan, who was running for Senate in 2004. Apparently, Jack took Jeri to a kinky club and wanted to have his way with her, in public. Anyway, the dirty laundry was leaked to the press by Obama’s henchmen and later aired during Jack’s senate run (against Obama), and Jack lost. Obama won, gave the address at the 2004 Democratic convention, and the country was bamboozled. So blame Jeri for not having a wild hair. Blame the Illinois GOP party (a sad, corrupt body of men) for running Peter Fitzgerald out of town on a rail instead of embracing him for a second term in 2004. And, yes, blame Illinois for hoisting yet another piece of crap politician on the world.
I would be delighted to reclaim Obama and all his dirty pals – Rezko, Blago, Daley, Stroger, and all those disgusting pieces of crap that are ruining my beloved city. I’d love to see them all in jail, with our last governor, George Ryan. We have a 10.25% sales tax thanks to those idiots. We have enormous, vacant, trash filled pieces of property in poor neighborhoods instead of Wal-Marts because we’re beholden to the unions. Yeah, we’d rather have trash and desolation instead of allowing an “evil corporate giant” to build stores and hire people. Sigh."

What did Ferraro say that was so out of line? "The black guy gets a free pass from voters and the press, because he's young, smart and new. Americans are caught up in the concept." Seems spot on to me. No one can name a single accomplishment of Obama's.
Contrast that with "John McCain never cared about the lives of people killed in wars." In other words, he is incapable of feeling. Nice words for a former POW and distinguished veteran.

But, when you consider that to the victims of such an attack, as the surrogate elluded to, the world had just come to an end, you ask yourself: What's the difference between a nuclear bomb and shock&awe.
