Obama's Shot at Clinton's Shot

April 14, 2008 11:11 AM

ABC News' David Wright, Andy Fies and Sunlen Miller Report:  At a morning event in Pittsburgh, Sen. Obama directed a new line of attack at his Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton in the fallout surrounding recent remarks where he cast small town voters as "bitter".

Without mention any candidate by name, Obama said "Around election time, the candidates they just can't do enough. They'll promise you anything, they’ll give you a long list of proposals. They'll even come around, with TV crews in tow and throw back a shot and a beer." (On Saturday, Clinton had a beer and did a shot of whiskey at Bronko's Restaurant in Indiana.)

Obama himself is not innocent of lugging around a TV crew to film him enjoying a beer – on March 28th in Latrobe, Pennsylvania Obama and Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey toasted over Yuenglings at Sharky’s Café - with pool of TV cameras in tow.

At the event, where Obama addressed the Alliance for American Manufacturers and emphasized his work with local steel plants as a community organizer in Chicago early on in his career, Obama again admitted his poor choice of words remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser last week but turned the argument around on his two opponents, charging McCain and Clinton with questioning his respect for the workers of Pennsylvania.

"They're saying that I'm "out of touch",I'm an "elitist" because I said a lot of folks are bitter about their economic circumstances," Obama said, "When I hear my opponents, both of whom have spent decades in Washington, saying I'm out of touch, it's time to cut through the rhetoric and look at the reality."

Obama emphasized his opposition to NAFTA and CAFTA in front of the union crowd, and again pointed out Clinton's changing position in addition to her top strategist Mark Penn's meeting with the Columbian government.

"You can have a debate about whether my position is right or wrong. But here's what you can't do. You can't spend the better part of two decades campaigning for NAFTA and PNTR for China, and then come here to Pennsylvania, and tell the steelworkers you've been with them all along," Obama said. "You can't say you are opposed to the Colombia Trade deal, while your key strategist is working for the Colombian government to get the deal passed."

Senator Clinton is also slated to address the group this morning as well.

hmmm did Obama forget that he also posed for the cameras in PA and put down a beer in the bar? Maybe in his veiws....its a man thing and not a woman thing. I like to hear his mocking of HIllary on this when he himself have also done it!

Posted by: Richard | Apr 14, 2008 11:23:20 AM

Richard -

The difference is this. When Barack took down a beer, it was casual. When Hillary did it, she made it out to be an epic event, with cameras surrounding her like she was about to swallow a sword.

Obama is in touch alright. In touch with his own superiority. How he portrays himself is exactly how Rev (used loosely) taught him. Step down Obama

Posted by: Decided | Apr 14, 2008 11:27:20 AM

Obama is so double standard, thats one reason why he will not be the Democratic nominee. His comments on small towns in America has created a HUGE gaffe in his campaign, along with him skirting the questions asked last night in the forum, his wife still "hating" America, and now the Rev. Wright has resurfaced to spread racism. I see Obama's campaign imploding right now. Just with his elitist attitude, the Super Delegates are seeing that he is unelectable, and will support Clinton. You already see this with Jimmy Carter, who many thought he was going to go ahead and endorse Obama, now has decided to wait until the convention. He knows Obama is self destructing. Hillary is definitely the better candidate. Hillary 08 !

Posted by: david from texas | Apr 14, 2008 11:28:46 AM

Obama has forgotten that he outspends clinton 5 to 1, and has said every single lie to voters to appeal to as many people as possible.

Now, Clinton is a liar. They are ALL liars. Even Mc Cain is a liar -although he doesnt lie as much as Clinton or Obama.

This play by Obama is weak . He should have just changed the subject instead of making it an issue still. Now he keeps the thing alive .

I wonder if Obama can expect the John Edwards endorsement ever in his lifetime now. .............

Cult leaders usually end badly up in meltdown. Are you youngsters and black voters still "clinging" to this elitist phony?

I agree Decided. Both democrats need to get in touch with reality. They are promising the sun and the moon but as president neither can deliver. Last I checked the congress is the one who writes laws not the President.

Like he also forget his attempt at bowling, am sure everyone looking at that clip now knows he has never bowled a day in his life, maybe he now has an interest in the sport because it seems he did not do that for a photo op judging from his words.

whatever it takes to get elected. Isn't that the moto of any politician? When I break down the Clinton's (and make no mistake, it's a team we'd be electing, not just Hiliary), and McCain, I can't find any consistency. Obama tried to stick to the facts in the beginning, but Hiliary and camp wanted to start a character debate. Last time I checked, character only matters when you're up against it. The fact that Hiliary couldn't stick to the issues and chose the route of character slam in her race against Obama, tell me a lot about her personally. I don't care if her campaign manager came up with the idea - she made the decision to use that intel and go the route of a character debate. A message for Hiliary - pick an issue, establish your position, and stick with it. You're not going to get 100% of the people to agree with your position, but last time I checked, you're human and have a right to your opinion. Don't say what you think people want to hear to get elected because utlimately, that makes you a "typical" politician. Obama's been very clear on his positions, right or wrong, doesn't matter. You know what his views are because he's putting it out there to give you an opportunity to judge. Right now, he's got my vote.

Posted by: slick | Apr 14, 2008 11:34:24 AM

It is a shame that people are still talking about Rev.Wright's comments as if he is Obama's running mate. How many people agree with every word their pastor says ? it is time too move on.

Posted by: jfffnn | Apr 14, 2008 11:34:26 AM

all I have to say ...is put both of them in your mind...their paths ...their careers... their entire lives...

Now ask with both of them in your minds...

Who is the elitist?

You all know that Obama isn't the elitist

and the world knows it too.

McCain and Clinton have been playing the game , making the moneys and hobnobbing with the elite in a bubble for WAY too many years.

If being an elitist is that you fight for factory workers and lower income communities... and walk those streets organize the people, doing that over taking a washington job or offers from every top law firm in the country where you could write your ticket... ...not raise money from the $2000 a plate dinner or say things that get you elected or don't say things when it is hard to say them...

then yeah Obama is an elitist.

This conversation is just dumb. Out of the three candidates... they are saying Obama is the "elitist"?! ...how did we get here? it's kind of funny.

Posted by: dl | Apr 14, 2008 11:35:17 AM

oh no he didn't talk about drinking beer for the camera MR European Beer, Goat Cheese taster and Mr. Arugula.

Posted by: toby | Apr 14, 2008 11:35:45 AM

There's nothing like having a few days to refine the rhetoric and make it more appealing than the stinging of the original verbiage. Sorry, but the original words are more in line with how Obama really feels. And he is an elitest and condescending and thinks he's better than the average person. I've yet to hear either McCain or Clinton even remotely denigrate small-town America or the middle-class. Once again, Obama reveals himself.

F*ck John Edwards.

The question is: Why isn't Obama talking about his life story more to challenge this elitist charge? His mother was on food stamps. His father left him when he was young and they were flat broke all his youth. He went to good schools on hard-earned scholarships. He and his wife were poor until recently. Why not highlight these things for Godsakes?

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 14, 2008 11:35:49 AM

jfffnn,

Why do you go and tell the Obamas and Wright to move on instead of sitting in the million dollar mansions complaining about things that happenned 150 years ago.

Posted by: geevill | Apr 14, 2008 11:36:53 AM

People must talk about Rev,Wright its not like he is not slamming the press or whites. Just yesterday he was at it again so what do you expect Wright will say what he wants and no one should respond?

For a bunch of people that have so much hate for America exactly what are they doing here? Wright is retired if he hates America so much well he can alway migrate to another place, and take Obama with him.

They all hate this place but yet they are hanging on to this terrible living amazing.

Posted by: SJ | Apr 14, 2008 11:38:31 AM

Sure - next will come a new "enlightening" speech that he will give on all major and cable networks (surrounded by cameras)written by a Hollywood speech writer, taking cues from a Hollywood acting coach, all paid for by Oprah.
Obama is a major hypocrite and I've noticed that his followers on this thread are already stating its ok for him to have a beer, because he does it "casually" but Hillary makes a show out of it. Please tell me what is the difference? What a bunch of cult follower and hypocrites.
I hope Hillary trounces his butt. If not Hillary then John McCain. I just don't understand why obama does the same identical thing as Clinton, she is trashed and he is given his followers blessings and they sing hallelujah.
obama has made himself perfectly clear - he is an elitist and he his dishonest and he is a liar. He is going to make a major mistake and then there will be "mi-speaking". How I detest this empty suit which has been created by the Media and Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry and Oprah Winfrey.

Posted by: Lou | Apr 14, 2008 11:38:37 AM

Hyprocrisy at its most shameless level.....didn't Obama, a politican, also brought camera crews to a bar in PA a few weeks back and down a beer? Was that also his weak attempt as saying that he can relate to the working class folks? the only difference between him and HIllary is that HIllary did not go to some rich folks and mocked the working class behind closed doors after shaking their hands asking for support. Obama = Hyprocrite!

Posted by: Richard | Apr 14, 2008 11:39:17 AM

At least Clinton's attack was based on an issue -- What Obama really thinks about rural America.

Obama's attack however, was his typical mudslinging.

Can't this empty suit ever get down to real issues and solutions? Apparently not!

Posted by: Aston | Apr 14, 2008 11:39:27 AM

Obama is communicating a clear understanding to what needs to be done as a President, to restore peoples trust in future.

Contrary, Hillary looks her life as series of battles. Fighting battle after battle!

Posted by: Peace | Apr 14, 2008 11:39:45 AM

To jfffnn.....About Rev. Wright.....Obama, stated last night in the forum, that he was a Christian, but he also stated that he believes in evolution.....thats a double standard. If you are a Christian, you believe in Creationism, not evolution. God made Adam and Eve, and we didn't come from apes. Also, as Christians, we believe the pastor or "Shepherd" is over the "flock" or congregation. Sheep obey the shepherd, and listens to his callings. Rev. Wright will ALWAYS be a part of Obama's campaign for this reason...Obama can't escape it. He claims to be a Christian, however, another double standard, he doesnt uphold his pastor or his teachings. So, why stay in the church for 20 years. He contradicts himself over and over again. The true Obama is beginning to surface and he doesnt look good to America. I don't see him becoming the Democratic nominee, he and his campaign are imploding.

Posted by: david from texas | Apr 14, 2008 11:40:36 AM

Obama just does not get it, it's not the bitter part, it's the clinging to guns and religion etc part. It is as if he's looking down on small towns that he's having trouble connecting to and calling them gun toting, God loving signle minded bigots. Now he can attack Sen Clinton all he wants to try to take the media off him but he still needs to explain himself. People do not turn to God because they're bitter, they embrace the message and word of Christ and their religion, was he bitter when he decided to join his church?

Posted by: Kardasia_Prime | Apr 14, 2008 11:41:57 AM

Travel the world and you may quickly conclude...Americans are some of the most ill-educated folks on the planet..Obama eliteist? Maybe he simply right. But that's ok ...the Dems will yet put fossil McCain (Victory in Vietnam guy) in the White House.

Posted by: Egent | Apr 14, 2008 11:42:12 AM

Once again Obama thinks he is so smart that he can just talk about anything to distract from the fact that he is out of touch with the rest of America! This effort to talk about Hillary and guns as a distraction from what he said you got to do better than that, I guess life for Obama was really hard growing up in Hawaii were most people spend there life time wanting to go there. It’s like he had it so hard, give me a break, how many people grow up in Hawaii and have it so bad that they go on to receive there PHD I feel so sorry for Obama. I grew up in a single parent home and I never did drugs, but I have been threw hard times and I can relate to the people in PA. I always depend on God to get me threw life. Who does Obama depend on or should I say what does he cling to you know since he had it so bad that he chose to try drugs? Oh I almost forgot that was just bad judgment when he was going threw bad times! Bottom line up front you made a mistake by talking down to people tell them your sorry and move on!

dl - I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you!!! The Clintons and McCains are the ones with 100s of millions of dollars. Clinton owes her soul to corporations and other big money -- who do you really think she is going to fight for?

Obama is the one that has fought for transparency, was against the war from the beginning, and TRULY CARES about US.

Wake up People!
WE ARE THE CHANGE WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!
OBAMA '08!!!

It is the anti-NAFTA and anti-trade position that he touted to the rural voters in Ohio and PA that Mr. Obama revealed that was not not quite for in his remarks to the SF left-wingers. This man is as deceptive, if not more, as Mrs. Clinton. Of course, we are stuck with one of these two. Who would want more of Bush administration.
My greatest fear is not that the candidates want to personally benefit from the power of the Oval office but does one have a secret agenda favoring other countries, that have engaged in terror, and governments in other continents, which have been held by near-autocratic regimes even after foreign occupation was long gone.
This is the ultimate choice that we may have to face.

Posted by: Onlooker | Apr 14, 2008 11:44:21 AM

Everything, every word, every gesture of Hillary Clinton is scripted. I am beginning to think she is just a hologram projected onto a big screen at every political event. Wow! That would be great if she were not even REAL!

The woman is a beast. She tries to take every comment Barack Obama makes and place it in a context of her own choosing -like forcing a square peg in a round hole. Why or how ANY person can "buy" her baloney is beyond me.

Obama is not elitist at all. He is the only THINKING and truly intelligent candidate still in the race.

Go away, Hillary, and take that senile husband with you. Maybe take a trip to a motel in job-stripped PA and sip a few beers and talk about how you are just one of "the little people".

Posted by: Karen | Apr 14, 2008 11:44:49 AM

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

Clinton's questioning of Obama's true feelings about rural America is indeed a question that needs to be asked.

What did Obama do? As usual, he resorts to mudslinging and completely ignores the charge.

He's good at fluffing away his weaknesses. He's also good at avoiding the issues. He preaches hope but never delivers.

Posted by: Aston | Apr 14, 2008 11:46:30 AM

Obama is an arrogant elitist who only cares about himself and 'his' kind.

San Francisco is an American city where all illegal immigrants are welcomed and protected. The wealthy, elite hire them and make sure they get free medical care, free food, free education, etc. They work (don’t pay taxes) and send their money to their homeland. Obama supports this! He is an arrogant snob.

His comments in San Fran about “bitter” Americans living in small towns remind me of Kerry’s famous comment: “if you don’t get an education you could end up in Iraq.”

It’s like Obama's “typical white grandmother comment”. Remember how he compared his “white grandmother” to “Jeremiah Wright”, so he didn’t have to apologize for Wright’s radical remarks in a church of God?

Hillary shows strength and a knowledge to fight for ALL Americans.

NO OBAMA --- HILLARY 2008!

Posted by: concerned | Apr 14, 2008 11:46:33 AM

McCain would rather Hillary Clinton were the nominee? And we're supposed to pick Hillary because of that?? This is all getting too bizarre for words.

Posted by: CelticOdyssey | Apr 14, 2008 11:46:49 AM

I find it HILARIOUS that anyone calls Barack Obama an elitist. A lack of humility is more what it means than being "rich" and in no way, throughout this entire election has he appeared this way to me. He is more humble than ANYONE, ever, that has run for President. That's why this is so laughable! And for HRC to say so makes it even more funny. She's like the #1 elitist in the nation right now.

Posted by: JJ | Apr 14, 2008 11:47:19 AM

The Media has no intention of placing Obama in a bad light. He referred to Hillary Clinton as Annie Oakly during a rally. Now I dont find this upsetting, but If Clinton referred to OBama as - let's say the Lone Ranger - the US Media would have it on ever cover, news station.

Posted by: NYCStylez | Apr 14, 2008 11:47:26 AM

Obama bowls a 37, drinks a beer with his new best friend, and suddenly get religous about nafta, while saying clinton is pandering. His new type of politics is sounding like the old type of politics.
Isn't it funny when the press sees clinotn making disticntions between her and obama, she is gong negative. When Obama does it, he is responding.

Posted by: The Lord of War | Apr 14, 2008 11:48:11 AM

Obama will give us another landmark speech about "BITTER SMALL-TOWN AMERICANS" --- just like he gave us all that B.S. in his "RACE RELATIONS SPEECH" but, like Jeremiah Wright and his "God Damn America" rant --- this one will not go away!

How many times will he restate his comments until he gets it "just right?" Come on! Obama's elitist feelings are shining all around and come out when he doesn't have a script.

Wake up America before it's too late!

Lovely Hillary.
You have done an excellent job at causing a huge fight between the supporters and dragging in the Repugs too.
Wow what a woman.

Look, Hillary is not a candidate that can unify or accomplish anything.
She is a destroyer.

With her at the helm of the democratic party I'd lean Nader.

Its Obama or I don't vote democrat.

Obama we know what you mean by bitter. I'm bitter, bitter that this horrible monster of a candidate Hillary Clinton can treat the democratic process this way.

Posted by: Anna | Apr 14, 2008 11:51:42 AM

ummm, are Obama supporters actually saying when Obama had a beer it was "casual", but with Hillary it was "staged?" COME ON! This is out of control dissonance. The whole world was watching when Obama bowled a 37. His mocking is plain hypocritical, so stop defending EVERY SINGLE thing he exclaims; its how Bush supporters were back 8 years ago, and its such a disturbing pattern. We do not have to LOVE our politicans and defend every little thing they do; we don't actually know them personally, in case you forgot.

"You know, he [Bush] wants to divide us over race. I'm from the South. I understand this. This quota deal they're gonna pull in the next election is the same old scam they've been pulling on us for decade after decade after decade. When their economic policies fail, when the country's coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the most economically insecure white men and scare the living daylights out of them. They know if they can keep us looking at each other across a racial divide, if I can look at Bobby Rush and think, Bobby wants my job, my promotion, then neither of us can look at George Bush and say, 'What happened to everybody's job? What happened to everybody's income? What ... have ... you ... done ... to ... our ... country?'"

Quote by Bill Clinton
Sept. 1991
The LA Times

The Clintons are hypocrites. They will say anything when it's convenient. They will do anything to win including sell out the American public. By Wednesday, this will be old news. New news, Bill Clinton supporting oppression of Tibetan people by Working for Chinese Government. Obama is being supported by small town mayors all over PA. Check the blogs if you don't believe me. This will help in PA. My cousin lives in State College, PA and she told me that Hillary Clinton isn't telling the truth about how angry small town people are. Obama gets it and she is changing her vote.

Every time that Obama's 'handlers' think that Hillary has the upper hand or Obama has almost self-destructed, some of the press comes out and puts out the propaganda that Hillary should 'quit' the race for the good of the Democratic Party. I hope that she doesn't quit--America does not need Obama, the 'hateriot' (not patriot!) His associates tell his tale very well.

Good point. Except you FAIL to mention he was actually raised by his white grannie in an excellent home, and went to harvard .

You know -the white grannie he chose to chuck under the bus as a racist and 'typical white person'?

As a far left liberal, who thinks average americans are banjo playing , suspender wearin, gun totin, bible thumpers, of course you wont be offended by Obamas comments.

Everyone else other than far left liberals will be deeply offended though.

Obama is unelectable because its becoming more and more obvious he aint no 'uniter'. He isnt any kind of savior. He is simply a far left liberal with a chip on his shoulder.

To Karen....you amaze me....if you watched the forum last night, Obama basically repeated everything that Clinton said because he can't think on his own. When asked different questions than Clinton's, he stammered and blundered saying "uh" over and over again. As everyone has said, he has great rhetoric, but no substance. I see a divisiveness in the campaigns now....Clinton is emerging the MOST electable, Obama is imploding. It bothered me that he supports drugs to enhance the end of life, regardless if the patient wanted it or not. It bothers me that he said if his daughters got pregnant, he would want to get rid of the baby. It bothers me that he tries to couple Christianity with Islam. It bothers me that he supports the Hamas, the very people who want to annihialate Israel. It bothers me that he couldn't give an answer for putting down small towns in America. The true Obama is beginning to surface now, and people are taking notice. If I were an Obama supporter, I would be really scrutinizing him at this point. Don't be misled and deceived. Again, he has great rhetoric, but no substance.

*********Obama's tactic now is..... yeah I said it--- I used the word BITTER....what are you going to do about it "tactic".......cause now all his surrogates are agreeing that smalltown America is BITTER

(as it's on Audio for all to hear)......

But at the same funding party

---he also said.."When people tell me they’ve all stressed about racial discord, well, you know, try slavery for a while"

Well you know when someone says something like that in the same venue....with the Bitter/Cling Story..... Obama has some chip on his shoulder..... He tries so hard to be Proud of himself of knowing so much.....But the True colors of Obama's Precious Words are coming out...... HE IS NOT PROUD----- HE IS FULL OF PRIDE( of his arrogant self just like his wife )--- and PRIDE IS ONE OF THE 7 DEADLY SINS.......

He is forgeting that this is a position to serve the country---

He really shouldn't be talking like this---IN CLOSED DOOR OR IN OPEN FORUM....he is really belittling the American Public and that is why this comment will stay with him as Rev. Wright's D*** America

You know folks, I don't know about you, but I'm getting really, really tired of this endless, mindless, Clinton bashing at every turn while Fauxbama continues to get a pass at almost every turn.
For all you Fauxbama supporters, I have a question for you...what if Mcain or Hillary or Bill were quoted saying what Fauxbama said....it would be on the front page of every national newspaper...the front page of every political blog...the media pundits in love with Fauxbama would be insisting that they drop out of the race. But because His Highness, St. Obama said it, that's all right. The networks continue to make excuses for him and it's really ridiculous. Chris Matthews apparentley gets an erection when he heard Fauxbama's speech...Keith Olberman must be getting paid by Fauxbama's camp....Andrea Mitchell practically chokes back bile if she were to say anything positive about the Clintons. Is it just me or does anyone else see it??
Another question for the Obamabots...If Mcain or the Clintons were tied to a white hate monger like David Duke for 20 years, do you think the media would be making excuses for them? Not a chance. They'd be run out of town and the campaign by the media.
This whole thing makes me sick.
If anyone thinks for one minute that the Rev.Wright issue is over, you're kidding yourself...it ain't over by a long shot. Now Fauxbama looks down his nose at rural Americans....and all you Obamabots still think he'll win in November??

Posted by: Kevin Lawrence | Apr 14, 2008 11:55:48 AM

after reading through all the comments, I might be inclined to think that none of our current crop of candidates is any good at all..... not one.

I certainly won't vote for McCain. He won't make it through his first term with his faculties intact (he's already beginning to dodder), and I won't vote for Hillary "I misspoke (oh, yeah, the same sniper story 7 times in a month)" Clinton.....

And I wouldn't choose Obama on anything written here because it churns and spins and twists so badly, I might think a good man is nothing more than a hack.....

Look deeper. Look past agendas and rhetoric. None are perfect, but if I have to choose among them, Obama represents something better.

Perhaps it's time for us all to appeal to our own "better angels of our nature", rather than snipe endlessly in nasty, disagreeable tones?

If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all? Those were the days.....

peace

BTW Obama supporters, if you want to not vote for Hillary in the general, its fine by me. I mean the numbers of Hillary supporters are actually in larger numbers going to vote for McCain if Obama gets the nomination, look at the polls, and stop your silly threats!

What ever happened to the war on drugs?

Alcoholism is America's number 1 substance abuse problem and often is a gateway drug to other drugs.

why is it good politics for our leaders to down shots. I can ess a beer and slice of pizza; but that is as far as it should ever go.

Do you want alcoholics running around the globe representing the USA like that horrid former Russian President? (Can.t recall his name)

What Obama said about some Americans being bitter is completely true! Let's face the facts. Some of these rural voters don't know the issues but vote on things like guns and gay marriage. They vote against their best economic interests. That's why we have an idiot in the White House. Obama is the only candidate that isn't elitist. He didn't grow up in a wealthy home like McCain or Clinton and he's not a multi millionare as they are. Wake Up America! Obama knows what he's talking about.

As a Hillary supporter it saddens me to say that I don't think she can pull it off, that Obama's going to be the candidate. But it saddens me even more that I don't think he can win and we're gonna have another four years of the same old crap.

Obama's comments, if taken in the context they were spoken, show that he does understand the people that the Washington insiders only notice during an election. He is right that people are bitter and have lost faith in their government. He is right that people often resort to backing a candidate based on a single issue because they have no expectation of candidates caring about the big picture after election day. People are reacting to Hillary's spin on the comments. She's framing it to mean something that wasn't even the point of what he said. The insiders from BOTH parties see Obama as a threat. Politics as usual doesn't want someone who wants to stop the games, roll up some sleeves, and get busy working on some solutions. They don't want someone who expects non-partisan cooperation and a focus on the people. I heard what Obama was trying to say. Only in the environment of political sleeze could it be twisted to be all this junk I'm reading.

Hooray for 'Decided'. You said it all!

Why McCain and Clinton don't get it ... McCain and Clinton don't get it because McCain and Clinton while understanding the strength of america is in its people can't see that those self same people feel established politicians have betrayed them ... sold out the industries they and their forefathers have built up ... squandered the political good will bought with their grandfathers and their fathers blood ... mortgaged the future of their children.

Americans are bitter not because they were beaten by foreign competition but because they were sold out by people like Clinton and McCain.

B Hussein O. does not understand real mid-west Christian America and what motivates them because he was brought up by an atheist mother and a muslim stepfather.

B. Hussein Obama is full on bitterness himself, it seems that's the way he sees the world even though he got a much better chance to higher education. what lots of white working class Americans are missing out on.

It appears that it's bitterness that motivates Barak Hussein, that's why he chose the church with a hateul preacher... and what he does?
Barak translates his feelings into what in his opinion motivates people in Pensilvania....

HOW WRONG CAN ONE GET???

What Obama said about American being bitter is completely true????? are you kidding me?? How dare you try to to understand the behaviors and politics of someone that is not your self, this same Democrat theorizing that we lost elections because we are out of touch with people is no more true than posting your statement. For all of Obama's education and "life experience" he sure lacks empathy and the ability to realize you do not generalize for the sake of compensating for your weak ability to connect with an important constituency.

RC - I agree with you, but nothing here is going to change. Internet comment boards are pretty much FOR people "sniping endlessly in nasty, disagreeable tones." This is the place for "gotcha" politics and cheap shots; whatever it takes to smear the "enemy." There are some people here that do it almost full-time. I come in to sample whatever lies and innuendo people are coming up with these days, but that's about it.

David,

I hope your a Republican WITH MONEY. The Democratic Party will go the way Obama goes, trust that.

To all you Republicans, congratulations, I think these small minded Dems will get what they deserve.

I hope you all have money or very secure jobs with the government. I hear the military is hiring.

This is funny.
5 ways of a weisel.

1. The first approach was from his campaign on late thur/early friday was to deny the tape or comments existed.
2. obama was trying to defend his remarks and attack mccain and hillary
3. obama now lowers the rhetoric and tries to say he slightly mispoke
4. obama now says he regrets if the comments deeply offended anyone.
5. obama now tries to twist his comments again by saying he poorly misworded them, but the overall message is true, and then goes on the attack against mccain and hillary again.

Rev. Wright is actually a good person. Hillary and the Media pick apart his statements so bad, it makes him look like a monster. Just like Obama statement this weekend. I do not think I am an over intelligent person but I knew from his first statement what he had said.
We are bitter people, we do hate our government...Hillary needs to clean out her own closet before she starts on his. She has more to worry about...the lies, Penn, Bill, millions in the bank, AFTA.
God help us all if she is the winner.

I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF PHONEY OBAMA. PLEASE DROP OUT OF THE RACE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED FOR THE DISINGENOUS POLITIAN THAT YOU ARE.

at this point, i just don't understand how anyone can justify being a hillary supporter to themselves. the woman is a walking, talking (condescending), piece of lying yellow pantsuit. more lies come out of that woman' fake mouth than i can count on all both hands....daily! i'm sick of her to the point where i can't even stand her voice. i don't want that woman's face in my home on my tv for the next 4-8 years, and neither does most of america. if she's the nominee, it's hello prez. mccain.

Obama was exactly right re "bitterness" in small towns across the country. Here in Iowa, Maytag closed its doors and moved out of the country where they could hire low paid people. Same is true for other factories across the state. Packing plants that used to provide good jobs for union workers are staffed with low paid illegals. Are the blue collar workers who are now left with jobs at Wal Mart or fast food dives bitter? No one but a mentally deficient person could conclude that they are anything but bitter. Obama is telling it like it is. Thank God for Obama. You can't deal with a problem until you first recognize that that there is one. The other two candidates and their supporters who are so hyper critical of Obama need to leave their Ivory towers and go out into the real world and feel the pain. And it sure takes a lot of nerve and gall for someone who made the multi millions that the Clintons did after Bill left office, to call Obama an Elitist. It 's like the tar colored skillet calling the silver kettle black. And as for the news media....Why don't you report Pistol Packing Hillary's pre election efforts on behalf of the gun control advocates? Bitter? Sufficiently so that I have just sent a campaign contribution to the Obama campaign....and I am a life long Conservative Republican. I will vote for Obama.

Posted by: conservative republican | Apr 14, 2008 12:07:34 PM

Anyone who believes Obama is an elitist, after growing up with a single parent and spending many years after college helping less fortunate folks, needs to be dragged outside and have the stupidity beaten out of them. For the love of God, you are an embarrassment to logic and humanity.

Please go vote for your blue collar 100 million dollar candidate and leave the rest of us alone who want truth, hope, intelligence, and responsibility back in our lives.

Fact: people (on average) are more active in their religion when faced with finacial/material stress. Fact: people are more defensive (anti-immigration, pro-gun) when faced with jobloss, economic stress, and rising crime. However, saying that does not equate to a bash on moral values, so why is everyone so quick to take offense? The truth is, what he said *generally* holds true. Its not elitist intellectualism, its observation and common sense. So congrats Clinton/McCain, in attacking this you're succeeding in driving yet another wedge between pragmatism and politics. On the other hand, were it not for decades of naive, incompetent leadership, Obama could never have risen from nothing to the doorstep of the white house. So thank you Hillary, you'll put Obama in the white house for us!

We need to focus not on just the word "bitter," but the condescending tone in which he made these remarks. He's standing in front of white millionaires, trying to get their money, and explaining why he thinks the small town PA voters aren't falling in love with him. He talked about them like they were idiots. It's not just the word "bitter."

To Kevin Lawrence----Very good post! That sums it up....however, I feel the media is beginning to see thru Obama and I'm glad! The American people are wising up now, see him for the fake he really is!
