Obama's Shot at Clinton's Shot

ABC News' David Wright, Andy Fies and Sunlen Miller Report:  At a morning event in Pittsburgh, Sen. Obama directed a new line of attack at his Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton in the fallout surrounding recent remarks where he cast small town voters as "bitter".

Without mention any candidate by name, Obama said "Around election time, the candidates they just can't do enough. They'll promise you anything, they’ll give you a long list of proposals. They'll even come around, with TV crews in tow and throw back a shot and a beer." (On Saturday, Clinton had a beer and did a shot of whiskey at Bronko's Restaurant in Indiana.)

Obama himself is not innocent of lugging around a TV crew to film him enjoying a beer – on March 28th in Latrobe, Pennsylvania Obama and Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey toasted over Yuenglings at Sharky’s Café - with pool of TV cameras in tow.

At the event, where Obama addressed the Alliance for American Manufacturers and emphasized his work with local steel plants as a community organizer in Chicago early on in his career, Obama again admitted his poor choice of words remarks at a San Francisco fundraiser last week but turned the argument around on his two opponents, charging McCain and Clinton with questioning his respect for the workers of Pennsylvania.

"They're saying that I'm "out of touch",I'm an "elitist" because I said a lot of folks are bitter about their economic circumstances," Obama said, "When I hear my opponents, both of whom have spent decades in Washington, saying I'm out of touch, it's time to cut through the rhetoric and look at the reality."

Obama emphasized his opposition to NAFTA and CAFTA in front of the union crowd, and again pointed out Clinton's changing position in addition to her top strategist Mark Penn's meeting with the Columbian government.

"You can have a debate about whether my position is right or wrong. But here's what you can't do. You can't spend the better part of two decades campaigning for NAFTA and PNTR for China, and then come here to Pennsylvania, and tell the steelworkers you've been with them all along," Obama said. "You can't say you are opposed to the Colombia Trade deal, while your key strategist is working for the Colombian government to get the deal passed."

Senator Clinton is also slated to address the group this morning as well.

hmmm did Obama forget that he also posed for the cameras in PA and put down a beer in the bar? Maybe in his veiws....its a man thing and not a woman thing. I like to hear his mocking of HIllary on this when he himself have also done it!

Richard -

The difference is this. When Barack took down a beer, it was casual. When Hillary did it, she made it out to be an epic event, with cameras surrounding her like she was about to swallow a sword.

Obama is in touch alright. In touch with his own superiority. How he portrays himself is exactly how Rev (used loosely) taught him. Step down Obama

Obama is so double standard, thats one reason why he will not be the Democratic nominee. His comments on small towns in America has created a HUGE gaffe in his campaign, along with him skirting the questions asked last night in the forum, his wife still "hating" America, and now the Rev. Wright has resurfaced to spread racism. I see Obama's campaign imploding right now. Just with his elitist attitude, the Super Delegates are seeing that he is unelectable, and will support Clinton. You already see this with Jimmy Carter, who many thought he was going to go ahead and endorse Obama, now has decided to wait until the convention. He knows Obama is self destructing. Hillary is definitely the better candidate. Hillary 08 !

Obama has forgotten that he outspends clinton 5 to 1, and has said every single lie to voters to appeal to as many people as possible.

Now, Clinton is a liar. They are ALL liars. Even Mc Cain is a liar -although he doesnt lie as much as Clinton or Obama.

This play by Obama is weak . He should have just changed the subject instead of making it an issue still. Now he keeps the thing alive .

I wonder if Obama can expect the John Edwards endorsement ever in his lifetime now. .............

Cult leaders usually end badly up in meltdown. Are you youngsters and black voters still "clinging" to this elitist phony?

I agree Decided. Both democrats need to get in touch with reality. They are promising the sun and the moon but as president neither can deliver. Last I checked the congress is the one who writes laws not the President.

Like he also forget his attempt at bowling, am sure everyone looking at that clip now knows he has never bowled a day in his life, maybe he now has an interest in the sport because it seems he did not do that for a photo op judging from his words.

whatever it takes to get elected. Isn't that the moto of any politician? When I break down the Clinton's (and make no mistake, it's a team we'd be electing, not just Hiliary), and McCain, I can't find any consistency. Obama tried to stick to the facts in the beginning, but Hiliary and camp wanted to start a character debate. Last time I checked, character only matters when you're up against it. The fact that Hiliary couldn't stick to the issues and chose the route of character slam in her race against Obama, tell me a lot about her personally. I don't care if her campaign manager came up with the idea - she made the decision to use that intel and go the route of a character debate. A message for Hiliary - pick an issue, establish your position, and stick with it. You're not going to get 100% of the people to agree with your position, but last time I checked, you're human and have a right to your opinion. Don't say what you think people want to hear to get elected because utlimately, that makes you a "typical" politician. Obama's been very clear on his positions, right or wrong, doesn't matter. You know what his views are because he's putting it out there to give you an opportunity to judge. Right now, he's got my vote.

It is a shame that people are still talking about Rev.Wright's comments as if he is Obama's running mate. How many people agree with every word their pastor says ? it is time too move on.

all I have to say ...is put both of them in your mind...their paths ...their careers... their entire lives...

Now ask with both of them in your minds...

Who is the elitist?

You all know that Obama isn't the elitist

and the world knows it too.

McCain and Clinton have been playing the game , making the moneys and hobnobbing with the elite in a bubble for WAY too many years.

If being an elitist is that you fight for factory workers and lower income communities... and walk those streets organize the people, doing that over taking a washington job or offers from every top law firm in the country where you could write your ticket... ...not raise money from the $2000 a plate dinner or say things that get you elected or don't say things when it is hard to say them...

then yeah Obama is an elitist.

This conversation is just dumb. Out of the three candidates... they are saying Obama is the "elitist"?! ...how did we get here? it's kind of funny.

oh no he didn't talk about drinking beer for the camera MR European Beer, Goat Cheese taster and Mr. Arugula.

There's nothing like having a few days to refine the rhetoric and make it more appealing than the stinging of the original verbiage. Sorry, but the original words are more in line with how Obama really feels. And he is an elitest and condescending and thinks he's better than the average person. I've yet to hear either McCain or Clinton even remotely denigrate small-town America or the middle-class. Once again, Obama reveals himself.

tomdavie

F*ck John Edwards.

The question is: Why isn't Obama talking about his life story more to challenge this elitist charge? His mother was on food stamps. His father left him when he was young and they were flat broke all his youth. He went to good schools on hard-earned scholarships. He and his wife were poor until recently. Why not highlight these things for Godsakes?

jfffnn,

Why do you go and tell the Obamas and Wright to move on instead of sitting in the million dollar mansions complaining about things that happenned 150 years ago.

Posted by: geevill | Apr 14, 2008 11:36:53 AM

People must talk about Rev,Wright its not like he is not slamming the press or whites. Just yesterday he was at it again so what do you expect Wright will say what he wants and no one should respond?

For a bunch of people that have so much hate for America exactly what are they doing here? Wright is retired if he hates America so much well he can alway migrate to another place, and take Obama with him.

They all hate this place but yet they are hanging on to this terrible living amazing.

Sure - next will come a new "enlightening" speech that he will give on all major and cable networks (surrounded by cameras)written by a Hollywood speech writer, taking cues from a Hollywood acting coach, all paid for by Oprah.
Obama is a major hypocrite and I've noticed that his followers on this thread are already stating its ok for him to have a beer, because he does it "casually" but Hillary makes a show out of it. Please tell me what is the difference? What a bunch of cult follower and hypocrites.
I hope Hillary trounces his butt. If not Hillary then John McCain. I just don't understand why obama does the same identical thing as Clinton, she is trashed and he is given his followers blessings and they sing hallelujah.
obama has made himself perfectly clear - he is an elitist and he his dishonest and he is a liar. He is going to make a major mistake and then there will be "mi-speaking". How I detest this empty suit which has been created by the Media and Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry and Oprah Winfrey.

Hyprocrisy at its most shameless level.....didn't Obama, a politican, also brought camera crews to a bar in PA a few weeks back and down a beer? Was that also his weak attempt as saying that he can relate to the working class folks? the only difference between him and HIllary is that HIllary did not go to some rich folks and mocked the working class behind closed doors after shaking their hands asking for support. Obama = Hyprocrite!
