PA Voter Registration Hits Record High for Primary
April 18, 2008 6:33 PM
ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman Reports: Ahead of the state's Tuesday contest, the Pennsylvania Department of State announced a record number of voters registered for the primary election.
Though this year's final tally of 8,328,123 voters is a record number of registrations for a primary contest in Pennsylvania, the record for any election remains the 2004 general election when 8,366,663 Pennsylvanians registered to vote.
Since January, 218,923 new voters have registered: nearly 70 percent of them as Democrats; 18 percent as Republicans.
Tuesday's primary in the Keystone State is a closed primary: state voters must be registered members of a political party to vote in that party's primary. Since January, 164,026 registered voters changed their affiliation to Democratic; 14,887 registered for the G.O.P.
The press release listed the highest number of registered voters by age group as between 45 and 54; the lowest between 18 and 24.

The better person does not always win - Ask Gore. On the other hand, if he supports Obama not to count the Votes in Florida, he'd really deserve what he was handed down to him.
But, Obama is a hypocrite, you never know what he will say to win.
Posted by: boneheaded, chicago | Apr 18, 2008 7:04:04 PM
The fact that Gore has remained silent on the votes not counting in Florida's primary means he deserved what happened to him.
Its a disgrace.

s.b. - Politicians like Gore and Obama are not exactly profiles in courage. What do you expect from gutless wonders like that?

honest - I have no problem with people who disagree with me. Doesn't proud American have the right to express his views? Perhaps you disagree, however, you did not point out why you do in any manner.

From NBC:
Clinton picked up two more NJ superdelegates: former Govs. Jim Florio and Brendan Byrne, who are add-ons. Earlier today, Clinton picked up the support of Rep. Betty Sutton (OH-13), giving her three for the day...
Posted by: True Truth | Apr 18, 2008 7:42:55 PM
Historically, if Hillary leaded or tied poll before state primary, she always won...
Why? Because a lot of her supporters are low or middle income people who typically won't be picked as polling sample...
More is that Hillary alway won over late deciders since they have doubt about obama and didn't fall in love with him at first glance...

True Truth - But where are all those extra voter registration coming from? Republicans?
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 18, 2008 7:46:57 PM
Dogsoldier,
Not sure those extra voters came from. It could potentially help either one of candidates...But sure we will know by 4/22...

MoveOn.org has been embrased by Hillary in the past - on issues she has promoted. Now that MoveOn.org has supported Senator Obama, she's screaming foul. As far as wearing lapel pins like the flag- HOW does this make a person a dedicated American? All it makes the person is a KITCH supporter because that's all a lapel pin is: KITCH.
Posted by: Kay | Apr 18, 2008 8:57:41 PM
Obama is a nut. He gives the finger whether intentionally or not when talking about Hillary, imagine if he did that gesture whether meaning to or not when talking about a foreign leader. omg
Obama: far left and not ready for prime time!
Posted by: al | Apr 18, 2008 9:15:26 PM
Obama supporters by large are the same loony left wingers who backed Kerry, Dean, Groe, and Kunicich. Their parents or whatever backed McGovern and Dukakis.
Obama is a dead man walking. He is unelectable. He and Ayres gave $8,000 to a pro-Arab group with terrorist ties. You think ABC vetted Obama? guess again. They barely scratched the surface. CLinton is holding back rather than doom the Democratic Party. you left wing fools.
Posted by: geevill | Apr 18, 2008 9:19:45 PM
As with everything else, moderation is the key. I'm not supporting Obama because he is way far to the left that he'd fall off the face of the earth if it were flat. Extremism is not the answer to our problems right now - it's over reacting to what Bush has done - which is way far to the right. This will most likely screw up the country even more - not to mention Obama's lack of experience. From this point on, he'll just be experimenting. If not Clinton, I will vote McCain who I think is closer to the center on issues I care about. He has shown that he has the political will to be independent on issues.

David and Bishop - You all sure there is no way for Clinton and Obama folks to come together at all?

I think it will be 56 to 38 in PA Fox is a favourite in Pa.
Posted by: Bishop | Apr 18, 2008 10:01:32 PM
Bishop - The high voter registration makes me uncertain how this primary in PA will shake down. I believe, with no facts I admit, that republicans are getting into the act. And how the republicans vote can make the difference. I've seen some articles in local PA papers about republicans signing up to vote, however, in what numbers is unknown as a whole.

When I visited the Hanoi Hilton last summer, I could'nt help thinking of the courage that McCain exhibited during his confinement. Listening to Obama the other night, I could'nt help thinking how hypocritical and gutless this man is.
Posted by: Paulus | Apr 18, 2008 10:14:36 PM
I livein PA. It's Hillary country. Had a guy who works at my company in Washington state call me yesterday. He wanted to make sure we didn't make the same mistake they did. Too bad there wasn't any earlier vetting of Obama, he thought.

You must have missed Obama drinking a beer the other night at a sports bar. Shall we now assume he is a closet alcoholic too? So, you see someone take a drink, big deal. I think you better decide your vote on something like...the issues. If you watched the debate the other night, someone else better brush up on the issues... Obama.
Posted by: beachnan | Apr 18, 2008 10:18:40 PM
PGHPAVOTER - How does your area look? At least the folks you know? Is the primary the talk around town or what?
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 18, 2008 10:20:31 PM
Everybody is talking about it. A lot of men, especially in the rural districts, are goint to vote Republican like their part of PA normally does. But men in Pittsburgh, the Democrat guys that I work with, have the same uneasy feeling about Obama that I do. They don't trust him. Way more Hillary signs in yards than Obamas.

I agree with Obama we need to put an end to racisim. That is why I will not vote for him. He is the most racist candidate competeing on any side. The combination of his, his wifes and his supporters racisim lost me completely. Back in Jan I thought he was worth a good look. I didn't know alot about him aside from what I had heard in the news over the past couple of years.
I looked at his tax returns and until 2007 black based organistaions rec'd 95 % of his charity. In 2007 black charities recieved about 60 plus % of his charity. The balance of his donations was like a "I'm running for President laundry list"
domestic abuse, veterans, cancer epilesy, education, hispanics,MS etc etc.
Now all charity is good and I am happy for those organizations but he continually seems to see us and them so I don't see how he can unite America.
"antipathy towards people who are different" He keeps bringing it up.
Who am I. A school teacher. I teach kids from low income families and of many ethnic backgrounds and I have watched his poor choice of words pit 8 year olds against each other. They think they can't all be friends anymore.
My classroom can't take an Obama Presidency.

Let's face it. The Demo party is shooting its own feet, in a year that they shouble be possibly losing, but they just managed a situation that they cannot win.
The process of nomination is fundamentally flawed and undemocratic. Caucuses do not allow everyone to have an equal chance/right to vtoe. Obama took advantage of it. These are the state and delegate he won and relies on.
They disqualified the basic right to vote in Florida and Michigan, at least in Florida due no fault to Democrats. Obama does not want these votes counted, in a state that resulted in the 8 years of Bush rule. How on Earth can you ever claim the other side stole the 2000 election. How possible Obama can win in Florida in November.
At the same time, there is no way out. It's trapped by a deceptive person who has no substance nor experience but words and words sometimes matter and other times don't count. The Demo establishments are so afraid of losing a group of so called loyal voter, there is no way out.
Prepare for 4 years of bitter fights. At that is a known known, better than a gamble in the unprepared unknown.
To bad, either Joe Biden or HRC would have been great President.

Personally, I think the debate was boardering on becoming a farce! I think it's right that candidates are asked tough questions, it also made me think that, for once, the media were being fare, seeing the spot light on Obama for a change...but he whined and is it true...he's now saying he's not doing any more debates, because of the way he was spoken to?! But it was ok for him to arrogantly look on, week after week, while the heat was on Hillary! Well Barack if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen!
What worries me now is that Rezko is being given bail...how convenient! Just when Obama is mentioned in evidence and probably when he'LL be called as a witness.! Because you know Rezko will skip the country and by the time they catch him, Obama is hoping he'll be in the White House. Why are the media not mentioning the trial notes? The Old Boys Network must really have a hidden agenda to want his past and current fund raising scams covered up, even the fact that Hamas endorsed him was ignored! The man mixes with crooks and bigots, he is nothing but a liar and a cheat with a winning smile...but that will not help America. Open your eyes and see him for who he really is!
A vote for Obama = A vote for McCain...don't let it happen!
Posted by: Di | Apr 19, 2008 12:17:31 AM
Dogsoldier?
In TX I know a lot of Republicans...that will be voting for McCain in the Fall...they voted for Obama..just to make mischief...Actually this is only 10 or 12 middle aged guys. The only Republican I know that voted Republican voted Huckabee...It was all wrapped up in TX
I read that their is a movement in OR of Republicans that will vote Hillary because of some talk show host.
Obama is getting huge crowds whereever he goes. But what the media and the MSM are underestimating is that the Democratic part is still very much split 50%-50%.
They feel the energy in their own coverage and they are all starting to believe their own press.
This will not be a cakewalk for the Democrats...If Obama gets the nomination he might have to go unscripted a few times. That always gets him in trouble.
Why isn't anyone talking about the last half of the debate. Obama has no grasp of the issues and he is clueless about promoting his own policies without a teleprompter.

proudAmerica
I don't believe for a moment that Obama is a Muslim. He is a member of a Church that preaches "Black Power Theology" It is based on Farrakans slanted world view.
I really believe that Obama is an opportunist and he was in the right place at the right time. Truth be told he has no record of accomplishment to speak of....He worked very hard at not being noticed and not being a "change agent"
His personality is the oppisit of his public relations campaign. He is so not ready for "prime time"...and the establishment gathers around him thinking that now they can live vicariously thru Obama.
I am just concerned that he can't even perform in a debate...How in the world is he going to be the president without a manufactured movement propelling him forward?
Posted by: Jackie | Apr 19, 2008 12:39:32 AM
West Coast Messenger and Dogsoldier....thank you. Some of us stand in a digital world and we will not be buried or shouted down....To me it's more than just Hillary...I worry that the truth and future elections will be won and lost by who has the best marketing...and who controls the market share...The Obama movement is supposed to be about "the new politics"
From here that looks more like we lose and dilute the fundamental principles that we should be protecting.

Jackie - What this Texas republican fun stuff? I suspect that this is a struggle between the centrists and small right center wing (Hillary) of the dems and the left and far left from the Obama side. Currently it seems as if the left and far left have a slight edge. Your thoughts?

Jackie, Excellent posts.
Every time I hear Sen Obama complain about being misunderstood etc all I can think is "You can't make a clear point to people who share your culture and speak your language but want to liase with the heads of Government in the the rest of the world" I think there is little wriggle room for a misspeak when dealing with international economic trade let alone national security. Especially if they have very big bombs and fanatical nationalists.

Dogsoldier! Hi
I think Hillary has tried to mend fences and Obama has been slamming doors.
Actually the dream ticket is the best shot at Nov....I am relatively certain that Obama has promised Richardson the VP slot. That explains him running out on the Clintons without calling them and the whole "Judas" fiasco. It was the best distraction for Rev Wright controversy.
I think Obama would throw Richardson under any passing bus if he needs to.
Obama will offer Hillary the VP slot only if he feels there is no other way.
His core advisers and supporters are mostly disaffected Clinton administration people. People that were cut loose or had big conflicts with Bill and people who were lower on the totem pole that never moved up. Big endorsers like Kennedy and Kerry and (not yet endorsed Pelosi) all want to run Obama's WH since they have been running his Senate career for him...they don't want the Clinton's to have a piece of that pie.
Obama is not a strong personality all his 11th hr legislation that he pulled off in State Senate was handed to him to give him a resume. He spent his time in the US Senate brownnosing Kennedy and some others...and fundraising to smooth his way.
In the 80's I was a community organizer in Dallas....only in an alternate universe would someone use that job as experience to run for President.
I do not think the party will come together...because Obama and his campaign are so arrogant that they believe they can win without Hillary's supporters.
For such a smart campaign they are making a fatal error.

Wanna know what the score will be tuesday night? Survey USA said tuesday that it will be Clinton plus 14%. Survey USA is infamous for being accurate. This was before the debate debacle Obama put on and his WHINING about it since.
I know, all you Obama lovers are pointing to all these TAP DANCED polls showing Obama much closer or even WINNING somehow.
You will see just how RIGGED the media is, as well as pollsters.
Clinton will win by 10 to 15 . Watch.
The CORRUPT media wants Obama to be close so they have an exuse to FORCE clinton out.
Like FORCING someone out when the other guy CANT WIN EITHER is reasonable. Never underestimate the Medias ability to MANIPULATE and BRAINWASH people.

How can anyone believe Hillary? She tries anything she can to discredit her opponent. She has been caught lying several times and yet people are going to vote for her. She does not mind undermining the democratic party is she cannot get to the White House. She has been saying she has experience but it was just a front. A story every one that is voting that believes her.

geevill, You are wrong. There are many Independents such as myself who support Obama simply because we can no longer stomach the Clintons or Republicans. We simply desire change. Do I completely embrace Obama? No. The fact is that they are all politicians and should be viewed very warily. McCain, Obama, and Clinton are the choices we are left with and given those choices, as an average white person, I support Obama. So, you can put whatever label you want on voters like me that warms your heart and makes you believe that Obama is simply a phenomenon...it doesn't matter. It is as much as what the other candidates lack as what Obama brings that drives his support..

The last presidential elections has shown us how dumb the American working class voters are . Each time they voted for Bush , who has absolutely done nothing for them in the past 7 years. Unless workingclass people wake up and start voting for their economic interest they will always be used by these Republicans. Apart from being hurt economically they also share the biggest losses of life by having their young workingclass kids send to a DUMB war . Time to wake up and vote for OBAMA who will shake up the Washington establishment .

Obama rides his magic carpet and will not answer questions about his connections to all the shady characters in his past, which is a very important issue if not the most important issue in the primary election which will determine if Obama is a creditable candidate.
Posted by: Bowling Ball | Apr 19, 2008 12:38:45 PM
Obama is like a deer caught in the headlights when he is asked a question he cannot answer. That is why he likes to prepare a scripted speech so that he won't stumble. Contrast that with any issue when Hillary answers. She is the most knowledgeable, qualified, experienced, and ready candidate. Debates are held for the purpose of seeing how candidates react and what the candidates know. Obama is not ready. I hope all of those newly registered Democrats are voting with their minds. Soundbite Presidents are the type we have had the last seven years. We need experience and working active brains to get us out of the messes we are in. Vote Hillary!

Georgia: I don't know if you 'really' watched the debate, but to be fair to Obama, the first 45 minutes of the debate he was cornered into answering questions that were in the tabloids. For a minute I thought a 'light' was coming out of a corner and he was going to yell out "yes, I did, I did!! like turturing him. For Hillary the host said and quote "Now, Hillary I know you wont'want to talk about that, let's move on". How is that fair? Obama is ready and always have been for the ISSUES questions, just ask the ladies of the 'View'. These show's questions were ramsoned, not 'scripted. Now, is someone is attacking you with stupid questions you know you already answered long ago, would you too kind of stumble a little bit, like......what the..??? HUMM????????????????? These questions were not expected from professional journalist. Check the latest news, please. Is all over the place.

Man, the Hillary supporters are a bunch of conspiracy driven nutcases. They read into crap that doesn't even exist. Use some common sense for a minute. Let's be fair, all 3 candidates have things in their closet. They have all made mistakes, but to act like Hillary is pure as the driven snow after 30 years in gov't, your just fooling yourselves. If your bold enough to call out Obama on who he has had associations with, then be fair and recognize Hillary's as well. Obama's don't look so bad.
