Reid, Pelosi Fire Back at Bush on Iraq

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: Within moments of President Bush concluding his speech announcing greater "dwell time" for troops, Democrats were responding in front of cameras just off the Senate floor.

They pointed out that the President opposed their attempts last year to give troops more dwell time by enshrining a one month in-country deployment to one month in the US. At that time, Senate Republicans labeled the plan proposed by Sens. Jim Webb, D-Va., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., a backdoor attempt to institute a timetable for withdrawal.

"It's important that people stand up, not for something vague and abstract, but something that is black and white: If you're in Iraq or Afghanistan for 12 months, then you have to be home at least 12 months," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"The president still doesn't understand that America's limited resources cannot support this endless war that he's gotten us involved in. His announcement, while some look to as a great victory, is, I say, two steps backwards and one step forward."

Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi concentrated on the cost of the war. Reid said it is costing Americans "$5,000 a second." Pelosi said the war is being paid for with borrowed money, and the ensuing debt that is dragging the U.S. economy into recession.

Reid and Pelosi were joined by leaders of Veterans groups. Disabled Vietnam Vet Bobby Muller, the head of Veterans for America, said the President's pledge to give troops shorter deployments is a "bogus statement."

"We are out of troops. The army is out of troops. End of conversation," Muller said.

Reid said the Iraq commander Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker's testimony, which counseled a pause in the drawdown of troops to pre-surge levels in July, ignores the broader problems for the country.

"I have the greatest admiration and respect for General Petraeus," Reid said. "But we as a country have more than Iraq to worry about. . . Did we learn anything about America being any safer? No."

On the President's call for Democrats to send him supplemental war spending bills without changing his requests, Reid chuckled and said he and Pelosi hadn't been "born politically yesterday."

"We are the ones that have taken care of the troops.  We're the ones that first called for the need for body armor for people that are there fighting for us, like the men behind us today.  We're the first to call for up-armoring our vehicles. So, the president need not lecture us on taking care of the troops," Reid said.

i find it interesting that pelosi has 'found her voice' and grown a spine now that bush is on his way out. she took impeachment 'off the table' and sat quietly on the sidelines until now. give me a break. i also find it appalling that the 'antiwar' crowd is heralding her phony bravado-pelosi is merely jumping on the bandwagon. furthermore her support for obama should disqualify her to serve-as chair-woman at the convention.

This president is just about as ignorant as the ones who put him in office. Talking about the tail wagging the dog. America has been raided by those crooks that Bush appointed and they are not about to let go. All of you who voted for this administration is getting just what you deserve.

William - well said - I always tell people they elected him -you got what you wanted - you are not allowed to complain.

Same goes with Obama, I have a worse feeling about him than I did with bush.
All those idiots that vote for him, are never allowed to complain.

Obama is Bushes Democratic counter part or twin.

Actually I think Obama will make Bush look good.

Perhaps Pelosi and Reid should have spoken up when Obama said HE would leave 80,000 troops in Iraq. At least that would have made their message consistent.

Seah - I feel the same way... Bush fooled people with his unity talk and so is Obama...There is a chance if Obama is elected, he would screw up this country even more! I try to have a mental picture in my mind; what it would look like to see the Obama's at the WH, and it makes me sick!

Why do Reid and Pelosi keep giving money to a war they find so repulsive? If they had one iota of ethics they would have cut off the money over a year ago. They are politicians that talk big then fold when the chips are down. What cowards. No wonder they have a worse approval rating than the president.

These Democrats have never met a war they didn't like... Just watch them rubber stamp the next war in IRAN, then I want to hear all of you make excuses for them AGAIN! The Democrats aren't gonna stop a DAMN thing! They're personally making too much money, and will always throw that bogus jobs arguement at it. They are comfortable with soliders in bodybags, just as long as the contractors in their district keep getting government cash that comes back to them in contributions if they win, and lobbyist jobs if they lose. Screw them! They're just like the Republicans. Pathetic! Pelosi and Reid are about as smart as effective as Hoover was in preventing the Depression. They don't listen to you, or even care about you. Open your eyes, they are worthless. Only the Republicans make it even close.

Is there anything worth fighting and dying for?

Posted by: Joseph Preston Schwalenberg | Apr 10, 2008 7:19:43 PM

Life is worth dying for.

Specifically, life situations that bring joy.

Like...

1. An economy that works for everyone; where every citizen can contribute to it's growth; where business owners and lenders operate from a place of integrity, not greed.

2. An energy policy that distributes global resources fairly.

3. A health care system that recognizes alternative forms of healing if that's what works.

4. An education system that inspires self knowledge.

5. A judicial system that serves to promote safety, not feed into the economics of prison building.

"Actually I think Obama will make Bush look good."
-seah

Bush can't finish a complete sentence half the time and the other half he's smirking about proud that he did. Obama ain't Bush. Stop the insanity.

How about freedom, is freedom worth dying for? And not, just your own freedom, but freedom for others. . .

Posted by: Joseph Preston Schwalenberg | Apr 11, 2008 1:28:53 PM

Y'all are funny. Not one of you who are criticizing our presence in Iraq say a darn thing about our national security. What do you absolute morons think is going to happen if we pull the troops out too soon? You are so short-sighted. I guess you don't think another terrorist event would be bad for the economy. Our presence there does more than you can imagine, like it does in the others areas of the world.

Hate Bush all you want. I am not a fan of a lot of his policies. But he is doing what he (and military experts) thinks is best for our (and yours too) security. And it is working. Even if the spineless Dems don't agree.

I am thankful that we have him in office instead of Kerry or Gore. And I am scared of the day that Clinton or Obama gets in office.

Posted by: Lamm | Apr 11, 2008 2:00:21 PM

Lamm: "Hate Bush all you want." I hate Bush all I want. "But he is doing what HE (and military experts) thinks is best for our (and yours too) security." Bin Ladin is NOT in Iraq! Bin Ladin is still roaming freely! "And I am scared of the day that Clinton or Obama gets in office." You ARE scared of everything Bush feeds you. Now, pay attention, Lamm. "I" am afraid for my son who is deployed to Iraq. "I" want my son in the United States protecting OUR citizens here at home, not to protect the oil lords. "I" don't want my son to die for lies and profit. You can vote McCain but I'm gonna cancel your vote by voting for a democrat.

"How about freedom, is freedom worth dying for?"

Yes.

That war was fought between 1775 and 1783 when Patriots living in Thirteen Colonies protested against unfair laws and taxes imposed by the British Empire.

Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi Government did not threaten our freedom. He
threatened our contractually profitable and convenient access to oil.

I am so tired of this war. How can anyone think we need to be their? How can we justify paying people not to shot at us. the IRAQ people want us out
the war is a civil matter let them fight and pay for their own war. My son spent 25 years in the Air Force. He says the soldiers will not tell the public the truth because they can't. The public will never know what's really happening and we will never get out. As far as what party gets in office. Anybody in their right mind will never let the Reuplic Party get in again. You know there is always talk about Clinton and Obama. Nobody never ever says anything about Mccain's wife who was a drug addict and falsified precriptions so she could get drugs.

Reid and Pelosi Fire Blanks!
A year ago Reid said the war in Iraq
was lost! Now that he has been
proven wrong and we actually have a chance to win he claims the war is too
expensive! Reid and the Dems would
rather lose! Of course if things get tough in Afganistan Reid and Company will be howling for a withdrawal from
Afganistan!

How about the freedom of the ethnic Kurds in Northern Iraq? How about the Shiites that were oppressed under Saddam Hussain's reigme? Do they deserve freedom. If they payed for their own war, where is the money gonna come from. You know, liberals scream and shout all day, "FREE TIBET!" Why can't the tibetans just pay for their own war?

Posted by: Joseph Preston Schwalenberg | Apr 13, 2008 9:11:41 AM

Good question ... like the Shiite and the Sunni's are now paying for theirs?
(Majority of Kurds practice the Sunni belief system).

How many resources and lives did we offer to the Catholic/Protestant dispute in Ireland? Dunno - my guess is a few US citizens made a profit selling weapons to both sides.

As for Tibet, the Seventeen Point Agreement signed in 1951 is an interesting read, with some background research.

All hail Wikipedia - without it, we would be dusting off forgotten books in the library.

The question is:
Are we our brother's keepers?
If yes, what is the best approach?
If no, with whom will I break bread?

Thanks Kristi, finally a logical, educated point.
Good questions, making people think is better than screaming and having a hissy fit over personal opinions.
