Teamsters Prez to Obama: 'End the Mystery' on NAFTA Meeting
April 08, 2008 1:56 PM
ABC News' David Wright and Sunlen Miller Report: On an Obama campaign conference call today, the president of the powerful Teamsters union disputed Sen. Hillary Clinton's, D-N.Y., assertion that both Democratic presidential campaigns had rogue advisers on the issue of free trade but that her campaign dealt with the issue more effectively than Sen. Barack Obama's did.
Teamsters General President James Hoffa Jr., an Obama supporter, was asked to respond to Clinton's attempt today to draw a connection between her former chief strategist Mark Penn's recent meeting with Columbian diplomats where he discussed lobbying efforts to secure a free trade deal that Clinton opposes and a disputed meeting earlier this year between Obama's senior economic adviser Austan Goolsbee and Canadian diplomats over NAFTA.
In that meeting, which the Obama campaign initially denied ever took place, Goolsbee reportedly told the Canadians that Obama's tough rhetoric on NAFTA was mere political posturing. After Canadian officials leaked a key memo that called into question the Obama campaign's repeated denials, the campaign acknowledged the meeting but denied Goolsbee ever said any such thing.
"I haven't met Goolsbee, but evidently he's the top economic adviser," said Hoffa, in response to a question from ABC News. "I think he should basically come up and say what he believes and what he believes he's going to be advising Barack Obama about. And Barack Obama should do the same thing. Let's end this mystery about what happened."
Hoffa added that he doesn't think Obama is going to distance himself from Goolsbee "but he should certainly clarify whatever happened at that meeting," Hoffa said.
"We agree," wrote Clinton spokesman Phil Singer in an email. "Sen. Obama and his campaign have routinely dodged questions about the multiple stories they've told with regard to l'affaire Goolsbee. Sen. Obama should come clean about why his top economic adviser told the Canadians to dismiss his NAFTA criticism as political rhetoric before he has his campaign launch attacks."
On the Obama call, another Obama supporter Rep. Ryan Dvorak, D-Ind., quickly chimed in immediately following Hoffa, asserting the Obama campaign had no need to revisit the Goolsbee situation.
"I'm pretty sure it was clarified at the time," Dvorak said. "Goolsbee and the Canadians both, at the time, denied that the conversation took place the way it was characterized. So I'm not sure there was as much there as there is with the Mark Penn situation."
For his part, Hoffa too dismissed Clinton's suggestion that the Goolsbee and Penn matters are equivalent, noting that Penn was a paid adviser who stood to profit from his lobbying efforts on behalf of Colombia. Goolsbee, he asserted, was an unpaid adviser to the Obama campaign.
"There's no comparison," he said. "But, you know, I've asked Barack Obama about this. He says I'm committed to this issue."
Goolsbee's meeting with officials at the Canadian consulate in Chicago -- and the Obama campaign’s less than forthright handling of it in the week preceding the Texas and Ohio primaries -- may well have hurt Obama in those crucial contests. But Goolsbee, a University of Chicago economist, remains Obama's most trusted adviser on economic issues, although he has had a lower public profile in the campaign ever since the controversy.
Penn was Clinton's chief campaign strategist until he was stripped of that title this weekend. He continues to hold an advisory role in the campaign – involved in daily conference calls and polling – but other campaign staffers have now been promoted to handle strategy.
Hoffa's demand for further clarification on the Goolsbee matter was obviously not the headline the Obama campaign was hoping for from the conference call.
In a subsequent call held moments after the Hoffa call signed off, deputy Obama campaign manager Steve Hildebrand said, "I don't think that President Hoffa was aware that the campaign already clarified what occurred. He did send out a clarification a few minutes ago and if you didn't get it you can ask President Hoffa's office to give that to you."
Hildebrand went on to say: "Mark Penn was working for the Colombian government, Austen Goolsbee was not, he had one meeting. So that's been clarified now, I don't think it's an issue that is even closely aligned, Sen. Clinton's campaign can continue to push around what they want, but the facts are the facts."
UPDATE: Following the conference call, the Obama campaign distributed a statement from Hoffa.
"To clear up any misunderstanding about my statements, the Obama campaign and Austan Goolsbee have already clarified Professor Goolsbee's meeting with representatives from the Canadian government, and as confirmed by the Canadian government, Sen. Obama's position on NAFTA has not changed. As I said on a conference call with reporters earlier today, Sen. Clinton has a credibility problem with the working men and women across this country on the issue of trade. This problem is only underscored by Mark Penn's continued role in her campaign."

They're both for NAFTA, publicly not in it's current form; Privately behind the scenes completley. Hilliary and especially Bill who passed it supported it then, and still do now. And Obama, amd in particularly his advisors (obviously) are behind it permanetly. Read bewteen the lines, don't believe the rhetoric in the campaign cycle; If he's comfortable with his advisors positions, then they are HIS positions, no matter what he or she may downplay. I mean that's just plain as day. So the fact that he says that he's ready to "scrap it" or restructure it" means nothing more than he still WANTS it around. That is all you need to know. And for Hiiliary to say that she and Bill we're "partners" and "co-presidents", but she was left out of this major legislation, well it's either one or it's the other, isn't it? Instead she's havng it both ways. Please. This NAFTA stuff is a farce all the way around. A bunch of "sound and fury" signifying NOTHING! In the end, big buisness always prevails. Don't beLIEve the hype.

I don't think there is a comparison between Penn and Goolsbee.
Goolsbee is an unpaid economic adviser who was invited by the Canadian consulate to discuss economics. In that discussion Goolsbee talked about NAFTA. The discussion of what Goolsbee said during that meeting has been disputed by the Canadian government as been inaccurate. Goolsbee is still on the Obama campaign because the original news story had twisted his words.
Penn is a PAID advisor to the Clinton campaign and he was the chief strategist for the campaign. Unlike Goolsbee where the Canadian consulate sought him out, Penn WAS PAID by the Columbian government to lobby on behalf of the Columbian trade agreement.
The circumstances are actually different.

You're right, James Hoffa. The Goolsbee and Penn situations are not equivilent because the Obama/Goolsbee incident was much worse! In February of this year, Obama flatly denied any meeting between Canadian officials and his campaign advisors. Then, on 3/3, he admitted the meeting did take place at the Canadian consulate in Chicago. When the Associated Press obtained the summary memo from the meeting, Obama denied the content of the Canadian memo. Canadian officials never said the memo was inaccurate. Not only did Obama lie on two occasions about this issue, he also never distanced himself from Goolsbee, just as he’s never distanced himself from Rev. Wright or Ayers, et al. Hillary didn’t lie about Penn, and she demoted him immediately upon learning about his meeting. That’s only one of the obvious differences in transparency between Hillary and Obama.

Clinton(s), try to spin it all sorts of ways, no matter what, she got caught in a worse lie than Barak did, things keep pilling up against her, mainly lies, good luck with the lying president
Hi-liar-y....

Remember that Obama initially denied that the meeting between Goolsbee and the Canadians even took place. Slick lies by the man who would be messiah. He only admits when documentation proves the lie.

VOTE FOR WHO YOU THINK WILL DO THE BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY.
IF YOU DO'T VOTE YOU HAVE NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT.
ALL THIS CRAP ABOUT WHO SAID, THIS WHO SAID THAT ,THEY ALL LIE AND YOU ALL KNOW IT.

This is Hillary Rodham Clinton's transparent attempt to sing Obama on an issue that has long been resolved.
It was noted and confirmed by Canada that is was in fact a Hillary RODHAM Clinton supporter that reached out to the Canadians and suggested they "take Hillary's NAFTA comments" with a grain of salt.
Goolsbee meeting with the Canadian official was an informal one, that had nothing to do with Obama's stance on NAFTA...and the Clinton campaign knows this! BUT NOW THAT PENN HAS BEEN CAUGHT, HIllary RODHAM Clinton has to deflect the bad press and try to sink Obama. This is the OLD OLD OLD style of politics, "if I go down, I'm taking everyone down with me," mentality.
AND THE ISSUE THAT NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT IS: Hillary and Bill have known Mark Penn for nearly 20 years. For them to pretend they didn't know Mark Penn was dealing with Colombia is stupid. Of Course Hillary knew about Mark Penn and the Colombians.

hopespring52-
The reason Obama said that meeting never took place between Goolsbee and the Canadians, is because it didn't. It was a casual, informal tour that was taking place where Goolsbee mentioned NAFTA, not on behalf of Obama.
The Clintons on the other hand reached out to Canada and told them to take Hillary Rodham Clinton's comments with "a grain of salt."
THE CLINTONS AR HYPOCRITES AND THEY'RE JUST GETTING WHAT THEY DESERVE.

All Politicians have to lie if they need to survive in Washington. If Obama says he will change Washington... he is in some dream world.
Was he able to change Chicago? NO NO NO. Chicago politics is one of the most corrupt.
So vote for someone who will atleasat keep 50% of their promise.
I will vote for Hillary because I know the 90s were far much better than now.

Hillary and Bill Clinton have had a close relationship with Mark Penn for nearly twenty years.
For Hillary to pretend she didn't know about what kind of work Mark Penn was doing with Colombia is pathetic.
WE'RE NOT IDIOTS, HILLARY!
You and Bill have had shady relationships with foreign countries and I'm sure Colombia is one of them.
RELEASE YOUR LIBRARY DONOR LIST...or is this why you refuse to do so?

Compared to the dodging sniper fire to making up stories about people being denied care for the "dramatic" effect....... Hillary is so "old school" Washington it isn't even funny.

GS-
The nineties were before 9/11. Since then, Bill and Hillary have had shady relationships with middle-eastern governments that they are trying to keep under covers. That is why they won't release their library donor list.
Those donors would in fact have strong persuasion with the United States in a Hillary Clinton Administration.
YOU HAVE TO QUESTION THAT!
Forget the 90s. We will never go back to that era...to much has happened and you need to stop being so naive about it.

Goolsbee is an unpaid adviser who had an informal meeting with a Canadian official. Out of that meeting the Canadian interviewer summarized his interpretation of the discussion.
Penn was and is a highly paid insider in the Clinton camaign who received $300,000 from the Columbian government to lobby for something that Senator Clinton opposes.
Anyone who can't distinguish the difference just doesn't want to admit the truth.
Posted by: DaCoach | Apr 8, 2008 2:54:45 PM
Hillary and Bill Clinton have entered shady business relationships with middle eastern governments.
It's time they released their library donor list so that the American People can see what kind of an administration Hillary would conduct if she wins.
HILLARY, YOU CLAIM YOU ARE THE MOST VETTED...what are you afraid of?
Posted by: megan | Apr 8, 2008 2:55:27 PM
DaCoach-
What's your point about Goolsbee?
Posted by: jj | Apr 8, 2008 2:56:32 PM
The Clintons have no scrupples about who they deal with as long as they get power and money out of it. they're willing to destroy their own political party for power...I wouldn't put it pass them that they would compromise the U.S. national security with these dealings for money.
You guys need to question what kind of people the Clintons are. They are scary.
Posted by: stacy | Apr 8, 2008 2:59:20 PM
major10719, your right, Hillary is the same old same old, but I don't remember so much lying, just to get into the G.E.
Posted by: Hal | Apr 8, 2008 2:59:31 PM
I have only one thing to say James Hoffa you are no Jimmy Hoffa the union's in this country are more paid off people. It has been a long time since they have done any thing for the working class they collect your dues and good luke trying to find out about your benefits.
Posted by: Bishop | Apr 8, 2008 3:01:18 PM
Comparing Penn and Goolsby is like comparing Mobil executives to someone cleaning car windows.
Penn is paid millions and has made most of the Clinton campaign decisions.
Goolsby is a part-time volunteer with no pull in the campaign.
Penn's title was changed, but he's still running campaign Clinton.

I don't think her name will be on the ballot but if you want to vote for her go ahead>>>>>>>
