The Price of Protection
April 03, 2008 12:00 PM
ABC News' Melissa Chee Reports: The United States Secret Service estimates they spend upwards of $76,000 per day protecting Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., as they wage an extended battle for the Democratic nomination.
U.S. Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan told the House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security that each candidate's protection detail costs taxpayers roughly $38,000 a day -- a figure expected to increase to $44,000 a day as the campaign heats up and the number of events per day increases.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the presumptive Republican nominee, has not yet requested Secret Service protection.
Testifying at a hearing entitled "Candidate Protection: Balancing the U.S. Secret Service Workload", Sullivan noted the Service initiated protection for Obama earlier than any other candidate in history when they assigned a protective detail to the junior Senator from Illinois in May 2007.
Sen. Clinton, in her capacity as a former first lady, was already assigned a protective detail.
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, was not assigned Secret Service protection until February of that year.
Sullivan also confirmed that the Secret Service will be the lead federal law enforcement agency during Pope Benedict XVI's forthcoming trip to the United States.

Wow. This is a alot of Cash.
Maybe if Hillary were to consider stepping aside, she'd be saving hard working taxpayers some money......that could go toward government programs or such.

Commander Guy -
Senator Clinton will always have Secret Service protection because she is a former First Lady.
Read the article.

Maybe if the media hadn't had a hand in creating so many psychopaths seeking notoriety by assaulting or murdering political leaders and celebrities, we wouldn't incur this expense.

Obama should step aside since he isn't going to win anyways.
BTW--Oprah, Kerry and T.Kennedy's been awfully quiet since the Rev Wright story broke into the mainstream news....
Won't be surprised if Axelrod and Obama are thinking to take the cash and run ( 40 MILLION IN MARCH!!??)

That is a bunch of money. Maybe when Obama gives a speech in a stadium, he should just video-conference. Ditto for Clinton. That could save some cash. You would have to by the TV though.

Kris - There's a difference in dollars Big Time in following a former first lady around DC to the circus going on today.

If Obama can raise forty million and more a month then he should pay his own secret service bill. McCain doesn't have secret service so why should Obama, times have changed, this isn't the 1960's and there are good local and state police protection that could be used at big events.

Why are we paying for oBama? He should provide his own security details!
I guess that would be racist!
Shame on you Obama. I an one of 7 million voters who will flock to McCain if you become the nominee.
There is no way America is going to choose a racist over a John McCain - a true hero!

Iraq Vet,
While I have not yet decided who to vote for, I do know that I will vote against Obama.
One of my son-in-laws is a veteran of Desert Storm and will also vote against Obama.
Senators McCain and Clinton have actually spent recent time in Iraq with John McCain spending significant time there.
On the other hand, Barack Obama chose to go to the Virgin Islands and his new found supporter, Bill Richardson, went to Antigua.
The Obama position on Iraq changes on a regular basis and indicates his lack of experience and inability to lead.
Our military men and women who have given us their service and their lives deserve better than a "Wright" version of foreign policy.
Also, I want to thank you and all of our military men and women for your service to our country in Iraq and wherever else you went.
We owe you much.

If anyone should pay for their own detail, it should be HILLARY! In case you people didn't know, SHE IS FILTHY RICH! They have made MILLIONS of dollars since Bill left office. If she can afford and/or if she is all that afraid, THEN LET HER PAY FOR HERSELF.

Typical Obama-type politician. "I'm special". All you taxpayers rally around and pay $38,000/day or $140,000,000 a year protecting my special butt a year ahead of time. The Chicago bouncers from the district you left in shambles would have worked happily for $100 a day....... and like other celebrities, you can well afford.
Present and former presidents and lst ladies are covered per law; you as of last year were NOTHING and deserved NOTHING...certainly not our hard-earned tax money!

I would like to also know what it cost to have Hilary, Chelsea, and Bill flying all over the country campaigning separately. They all receive Secret Service Protection. This is costing the tax payer way too much money!
How much more of our tax dollars will the Clintons spend supporting Obama in the upcoming months? Should we have to pay for this or should the Obama campaign pay for the Secret Service protection if it is for personal campaign use?
I think that a candidates safety is important; however, if they can raise over 16 million dollars they should be able to pay for thier own security. This is a gross misuse of tax payer money.

How much did Obama's secret service on his over seas trip just cost us?
