White House-Pelosi Face Off on Trade

ABC's Jennifer Duck reports: The White House responded angrily Wednesday to a suggestion from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA that she might change legislative rules to avoid a required vote the disputed free-trade agreement with Colombia.

According to existing rules, the Congress has 90 days to vote on legislation sent by the White House.

White House spokesperson Dana Perino reacted angrily to Pelosi's suggestion.

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

"Speaker Pelosi today did something unprecedented in  the history negotiating trade deals in announcing the democrats would change the rules in the middle of the game," Perino said.

The White House has aggressively pushed Congress to approve the trade deal with Colombia, arguing that supporting an ally in South America is in the best interest of the United States. But Democrats oppose the deal, which has been criticized by many labor groups and human rights organizations. The Democrats want to expand support for American workers displaced from their jobs by foreign trade before making more free trade expansion agreements.

"It is clear that there are many in the Democratic party who would like to kill this bill.  and they would like to do it without having their fingerprints on it.  They want to do it in a way where they don't have to take a vote," Perino said.  "You can bet that President Bush is going to bring this up at 3:00 when he sees the leaders."

The President is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders, including Pelosi, at the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss the trade deal and other matters.

However Speaker Pelosi explained her move saying she thinks the bill would lose if it were brought to the floor immediately and it would send the wrong message to the world about the U.S. positiosn on trade.  "I thought there was a risk (in) the President sending it to the Congress now. If brought to the floor immediately, it would lose. And what message would that send?" Pelosi said earlier today.

She called Pelosi's suggestion "awful precedent" and said it was "terrible" for this administration and all future administrations.  Perino said the White House has "worked tirelessly" and they "have bent over backwards to make this happen" adding "it will be interesting to see how the president deals with that today."

Speaking about the Speaker's move Perino said sharply, "The fact that they don't even want to have a vote should maybe tell you something because maybe she's not so confident of the votes they have."

After several minutes of Perino's criticisms of Pelosi, ABC's Ann Compton noted that the Press Secretary seemed "a little angry" about the sequence of events today.  Perino responded, "I think we're pretty fired up about it.  It is the right thing to do.  The Free Trade Agreement with Colombia is the right thing to do and they know it.  And that's why they don't want to take a vote on it because their special interests are pressuring them not to let this deal go through."

The Colombian trade deal will be just like NAFTA, another example of corporate welfare at the expense of the American worker. If I were Nancy Pelosi, I would not hesitate to bring this up on the floor and get my fingerprints all over it with a resounding 'NO'.

Peloski, hang in there, you can be tough as the males. None of these free trade agreements have benefited the American Worker. Look the number of employees without jobs within the first 3 months of this year along.

People need to understand that these agreements are done for the benefit of politics and not the people of the US.

Hey Perino... I mean... Hello POT meet KETTLE. What a hypocrite! Talk about changing the rules int he midst of thew game, this white house will not be unseated from that 1st place position for decades to come.

Perhaps if this overly concerned WH would send reasonable requests to Congress things would get done. Oh yeah, and stop vetoing meaningful legislation. Here's to hoping the country can survive until Feb.

I find it very amusing that Bush is POed about the Dems changing the rules when he's changed them to suit his needs for the past 8 years. I guess he's having a hard time accepting the fact that he's become totally irrelevant in formulating policy now.

What jobs would we loose to Columbia?

Please be specific.

If this administration wants it passed, it must be more pro-corporate fat cat legislation that will ship American jobs to other countries that pay 25% of the US wage. Then ship the product back to the US and charge the same amount so the board of directors can pocket the other 75% and buy cars made in Germany and clothes made in Italy. I'm all for trade and imports but the workers' rights, living wages, and environmental needs must be not only addressed but enforced.

Where was George Bush when Republicans in Congress were threatening to eliminate the filibuster with the "nuc-u-lar" option in the middle of the game???

Right-Wingnut hypocrisy knows no shame.

Brian -- the democratic party has been hijacked by those ultra-liberals who have the mindset you're talking about. It will only get worse. People with values and common sense will migrate away from the party. They will have no other choice. The democratic party no longer represents its traditional values.

As Speaker of the House Pelosi is 3rd in line to be president at this point in time. Thank goodness Dennis Hastert is no longer in charge with all his "changing the rules" to suit his party. Most of what the Democrats have passed in the House did not get passed in the Senate because having a majority of 1 doesn't pass anything -- the Senate has to have 60 votes to override a veto by Bush. This is WHY the Democrats have not been able to accomplish what they have tried to do. This is why it is so important to elect more Democrats to the Senate in November -- this is not just a presidential election. And by the way, for those who question Bill Clinton running the White House, don't you know that Senator Clinton stated she was against the deal with Colombia even though her husband disagreed with her. SHE is the one running for president, not her husband and she is making her own decisions. And she came out with this before Pelosi did. She is intelligent and knows more about internationl problems than either Obama or McCain.

Coexist-means don't kill.

Posted by: Brian | Apr 9, 2008 4:25:18 PM

The unions are the ones driving jobs out of the country. When you force company's to over pay their works and twist their arms into deals that hurt the company then you are hurting America. The auto works union is one of the main reasons that lead to the fall of the American car company's. If we changed our tax laws and go to the fair tax company's that left the the states will come flocking back bringing jobs and billions of dollars with them. I can not believe that the dem's thinks taxing company's will create more jobs and help the U.S economy.

Obviously the republicans can not coexist. It's primary meaning is not to kill living things/people.

I was saddened to see Pelosi cozying up with the enemy during wartime when she visited Syria. I believe that is known as treason! These divided states of America. Dem against Rep. We are shooting ourselves in the foot and have become a joke to the rest of the world. No dem has ever gotten behind our president during his entire presidency. Maybe if we would have supported him, we would have the respect of the rest of the world. It is like a bad marriage when one spouse is constantly running the other down. Divided we will stand!

Aston - You're hilarious when talking about the Democratic Party being hijacked. Think about what the neocons have done to the Republican Party and the unilateral government that Bush, Cheney et. al have brought. You sound like a talking point for the American Enterprise Institute. Maybe, you are...come to think about it.

hay NIcholas I'm with you is there anyone els to vote for.

Brian, it's easy to say that American workers should go back to school if their industry is on its way out of the US but it would be extremely hard to implement. Do you think a working man or woman in the manufacturing industry with no college education but, thanks to the union, making a decent living and supporting his/her family can choose to pay for education at night or quit their job to go back to school to acquire retraining, start a new career with no experience, and go to the bottom of the totem pole? Next to no one can afford to do this. Ask the people of Michigan, Ohio, or the textile workers here in North Carolina. The unwritten promise that was fulfilled to earlier generations has been taken from current workers. Jobs are shipped to China, Mexico, or elsewhere so the corporation's stock price can go up a quarter point, rich investors can get richer, and the CEO can get an 8 figure salary. Meanwhile the price of the finished goods doesn't go down. America pays the same (or more) for cheaply made goods that used to be "Crafted with Pride in the USA."

right, so did you have an abortion and now feel guilty about it? If thats the case I understand, will pray for you and our party, Dems used to stand up for what was right, protecting the people and workers. Now, well, sad state of affairs, can't even beat the likes of George Bush, TWICE! And we're gonna loose it again because of the far lefties who can't COEXIST (could it be that maybe mods and conservatives have a few good ideas too?). Ya'll need to stop making fun of how George pronounces nuclear etc., true immature colors, and focus on electing some leaders who will stand up for whats right no matter what the far left or right screams. McCain is the only one, where are the moderate dems?

Posted by: Brian | Apr 9, 2008 4:39:20 PM

Good for you Nancy - if Bush wants it this badly, it no doubt in some way screws the American people. Bad policies are the only ones the bush (mis)administration actively pursue.

Where do you think the Dems learnt to bend the rules. Remember when the republicans threatened to change the filibuster rule so they could get a vote on Roberts??? Sorry Dubbya and Perino... I believe the saying goes "You sow the wind... you reap the whirlwind" and No I am not a Democrat!!! We, the republicans ( i have voted that way since I could vote) played fast and loose when we had the power. i am afraid this time we get to lie in the bed we made!!!
