Bill Clinton Asks N.C. Churchgoers to Pray for Hillary

May 04, 2008 2:28 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos reports: Former President Bill Clinton spent time in two western North Carolina churches this morning, speaking more from his heart than any sort of political handbook.

"I didn't come here to ask you to vote for my wife," said Clinton, addressing the congregation at Church of the Pentacostal in Asheville, N.C. "I came here to ask you to pray for her. And to vote. Do whatever you want. Show up. Our country is in dire distress.

"I just want you to pray for her and to make your voices heard," he added. "Do whatever you think is right. But don't sit this out, because we are being called upon to return to our true purpose."

Clinton spoke of his long relationship with the Pentacostal church, thanking them for all the support they have given him over the years.

The small but enthusiastic congregation, whose church is nestled between the mountains of Asheville, listened attentively as Clinton told stories of his relationship with the church over the years. Clinton even spoke about how Barbara Streisand was inspired to record her first spirtual album after listening to a Pentacostal singer who performed at Clinton's mother's funeral.

As Clinton wrapped up his remarks, he came back to Tuesday's election and the emotions that come with it.

"You know, we get close to these elections, the tensions are up, the temperature is up," he said. "We're all liable to say something we shouldn't say. We're all feeling things we shouldn't feel. So it is a very good thing for be here."

Clinton also visted Biltmore Baptist Church in Arden, N.C., but did not address the congregation.

While Clinton's morning was leisurely, the rest of his time in North Carolina will be anything but. The former president has 15 campaign events planned for the next two days, crossing the state in the process. By Tuesday, Clinton will have held over 50 events in the state -- many of them on the front porches, train stations and baseball diamonds that pepper the small towns of North Carolina.

harlan - let's hope what most Americans care about is putting an end to the Reverend Wright-style divisiveness you both decry and espouse

Bill Clinton is down in rural North Carolina talking to white, rural workers subtly and descreetly playing the southern, Bubba race card. They are running a most condescending campaign. The sad part is, it could very well work for them. But this race has really been all about them anyway.

Bill asking people to pray for Hillary is good, but we all should pray for all the ones that need real help, homeless, poor, and kids that need to learn, we need to help the ones that need it, praying to be president is not at the top of my list. besides praying, donate time and money to the needy ones.

Posted by: Jim | May 4, 2008 2:54:13 PM

Go Bill, you are a great man and were a great president. I say a prayer every day that Obama doesn't make it to to white house. Hillary/McCain

Posted by: kittyCat | May 4, 2008 3:33:37 PM

Billy better pray for himself .He is the one who needed the lords help. What a slimmy way to put this to the people They will do anything and this proves it.

Posted by: older person | May 4, 2008 3:37:10 PM

Lets us pray for the troops overseas that she sent in the first place to hell with her election. What a crappy thing to ask Bill. You had your chance to get Ben Larden but you blew it so you are as much to blame as your freaken wife. God Bless our troops no matter where they are keeping us free to do this blog.

Hillary doesn't have a prayer of winning the nomination, so I guess asking for prayers is all he has left!!!

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

we do not wnat Obamas change he will not win

Posted by: staniam | May 4, 2008 5:00:28 PM

If Hillary loses even though this congregation prayed for her victory, does this mean that this particular church is a false one? Or that there is no god?

Posted by: Cloudyone1 | May 4, 2008 5:01:08 PM

Actually, the Clinton's will have held 71 events in NC by Tuesday to Obama's 12.

Posted by: s.b. | May 4, 2008 5:01:55 PM

NC voters are responding to to more visits by the Clintons Obama doesnt care hes tired he thought the nomination would be handed to him weeks ago I predict he will lose and resign the senate because he didnt get what he wanted

Posted by: staniam | May 4, 2008 5:07:51 PM

I'll take the Clintons anyday over all the others. The Clinton years were prosperous and they left us a huge surplus. Obama couldnt ever come close to doing and caring for America like the Clintons did, he can only talk. God help us if he is elected and his true intentions come out.

Well said. I agree with you.

Even now, Mr Clinton are still working on Humanitarian works for Katrina victims and African children.

Virginia,

I do the same.

Posted by: blue Irish | May 4, 2008 5:22:20 PM

Harlan,
Your comments says more about you then they do about Barack. My hope is that you get some help before that venom that is circulating in you moves from politics and starts effecting other areas of your life. You clearly are a very angry, hateful, misguided person.

I think we all should probably say a prayer for you and hope we don't read about you or see you on the news for commiting some type of mass crime against humanity.

Posted by: Rick | May 4, 2008 5:24:21 PM

All the Hillary's supporters that have spoken so far are illiterates and they need prayers cos they are dieing in poverty while the Clintons are making $105M USD.

Posted by: Cole | May 4, 2008 5:29:28 PM

Rick, I guess the truth about Obama is very distressing to hear. Hear no evil, Speak no evil, see no evil. The new motto of the Obama supporters.

Posted by: Sally | May 4, 2008 5:29:34 PM

I am sure Rev. Jeremiah Wright is praying for her.

Posted by: henry | May 4, 2008 5:38:25 PM

Della, what in Obama's resume makes him qualified to be President? Obama has a very scant background as a junior senator and has not reached across the aisle to work with any GOP Senator on any major legislation. So his mantra of "hope" and "change" are just a bunch of empty words. If Obama was anyone else, his long time and deep associations with the corrupt Tony Rezko, the racist Jeremiah Wright, the terrorist group Hamas, or the unrepentant bomber, William Ayers, would have meant the end of his run for President by now. So again, what makes you think Obama has any qualifications to be President? Please name just one that has any substance.

Posted by: emery | May 4, 2008 5:40:03 PM

You are really a blue Irish! how many times have you confronted your pastor? thats if you even go to church, why are you using peter to pay paul?

This comment was made by Rev. Wright and not Obama, mind you there are more than 5,000 people in that church, perhaps you people should go and accuse them too.

Well i can see you people are bound to fail, you guys are in love with failure, keep supporting Hillary, just watch she'll bow out on tuesday.

Posted by: Cole | May 4, 2008 5:40:39 PM

I want to pray for Obama too...so should I pray to Allah?...somebody help me out here....

Posted by: Henry | May 4, 2008 5:42:01 PM

Cole,

I have read all you've written on this blog, you are the only one with correct senses here, perhaps if you check those supporting Hillary here, they fall into the category of people the media describes as less educated people that votes for Hillary.

Just leave them illiterates are difficult to convince, they'll cry later.

Posted by: Bill | May 4, 2008 5:45:31 PM

Tom,

Its ignorant rantings like yours that has kept America stuck on stupid. Its this type of mental reasoning that helped created the Electorial college vote and made it seem like a good idea, because they didn't really trust Americans (or Americans like you) to have enough sense to make a choice by popular vote. When people read your childish display of imuturity and your gross lack of understanding about the issues along with rantings that only make YOU look like a fool, they wonder if the creators of the electorial college just might have been on to something. But you know what I find sad? You are probably one of the people whom Baracks vision, strategic plan for America would help the most...but you are too filled with un reasonable fear to catch the moment (reminds me of the many people during MLK's life and Nelson Medella's life that missed the work of God because they were too busy with their own agenda.) What a shame, America could have used your energy to bring about real change....not just another campaign season full of promises upon promises, only to be forgotten about once they have used you for your vote.

Let me ask a question of the Hillary hating people here...Do you hate Hillary for her political platform and policies or do you hate her because she is competition to Obama and poses a serious threat to his nomination?...or maybe for some other reason?....let me know...thanks.

Posted by: Henry | May 4, 2008 5:57:21 PM

Bill and Hillary are a disgusting 2 people. They will stoop to just about anything. pray for Hillary is a joke. If the people of north carolina are so gullible and stupid to vote for that liar then I don't know what this country is coming to. That goes for Penn and Ohio. If Obama doesn't win N.C. then I will say there was voter fraud. Harold Ickes will not stop at anything either. Dirty politics

Posted by: Diane | May 4, 2008 6:00:41 PM

What a wonderful gift it would be if somehow Hillary pulled out NC. We can pray, and thank god the Nomination process wasn't halted like the obama supporters wanted. 20 point lead outspending Hillary 3 to 4 times to 1 in NC. If she pulls this out she is the comeback kid. It might also say Americans don't like candidates of little substance who attempt to buy nominations. uh uh uh uh uh get out there and sell hope and change obamaites, the day of reckoning is approaching. Hillary Clinton '08

Posted by: Beau | May 4, 2008 6:06:52 PM

Goerge was one of the moderators of the ABC "debate" shambles. Now Hilary goes on his show and talks about how she spoke with him about NAFTA. Is it me or does anyone else see that the so called debate was nothing but a hatchet job.

Amazing how some think being the wife of a president is a job. How does that make you experienced. That means Shaq's wife should be able to dunk a basketball. Such inane idiocy is why some people can not see behind the veil of the Clinton hatchet machine.

Since when did one become their pastor. That argument is tantamount to saying that if you are caucasian and your father used the "N" word twenty years ago, then you must be a racist.

Wake up people, there is more at stake.

Posted by: AF | May 4, 2008 6:12:32 PM

His database says more than that -- it says that he is prepared to sell all the information he's collected about his supporters and their position on the issues to the highest bidder. He plans on profiting both monetarily and politically from this race for years to come. It wouldn't be so bad if he provided a candid disclosure of the purpose of the website to visitors or allowed his contributors to opt out of having their data disclosed but he doesn't.

Posted by: jlynne | May 4, 2008 6:18:56 PM

Sally,

No Sally, we hear evil, we hear the pundits speak evil and when we look at the state of our beloved country and the lies being perpetrated, the deaths of our troops, the sacking of our sacking of our economy, the divisive lanquage by Wright, the untruths by a candidate as blatant as Bosnia, the rhetoric of telling a nation you are going to obliterate them (wonder how third graders slept hearing the most powerful nation on earth say that)the lost jobs...we see evil. The problem is not our inability to hear, see, speak, the problem is getting white, black, red, yellow, republican and democrate to work together to make changes that are at least twenty years overdue. Sally, The problem is getting people to lay down unfounded fears developed by political tacticians who otherwise would be in another line of work, the problem is as Bill Clinton once said,"depends on the definition of is" Hillary thinks the problem is that she is behind, I have outlined above the things Obama thinks the problem is. So the question becomes that of your heart, what does your heart tell you the problem is? Do you really believe Obama is some type of Muslim out to distroy America? Are you afraid a black man will get into office and see retrobution for slavery? Do you think he some type of undercover criminal that the FBI can't uncover (after all he still has his law license...how did Bill lose his)? or have the pundits don one heck of a job implanting fear, backed by oil companies who's big profit day's are numbered? What about the lobbyist who careers have been born looking out not for you and me, but for people that paid them huge dollars to get their interest across? Sally, this is a time to open your eyes and think...not a time to be weak or lazy about the issues and go with what appears to be safe. Remember, we walk by faith not by sight. We put faith in the Clintons once and it was a fiasco that embarrased this country all across the world. Hillary has given us the same kind of politics such as with Colombia, saying she is against free trade while her husband and campaign strategist is over cutting a back room deal. If Obama had been caight doing that, he'd be out of this election so fast it would make his head swim.

Posted by: NCBorn | May 4, 2008 6:28:31 PM

A fact on Obama’s life: After graduated from Columbia Univ., Obama took a job in IL at $12000/year plus $1000 for a car in the poorest, dirtiest neighborhood as a community organizer. All his family and friends thought he was crazy. How many of us can do that??? If this is not patriotism, what it is?

Posted by: leighg1 | May 4, 2008 6:28:45 PM

You think he gets to keep the money raised in a campaign????You think he got money from big oil???? You don't know much do you>>>>>>Ask the Clintons to make their 07 tax returns avaliable....The blind trust of 41 mil is from all the things she said she is against.Like hey she is.

All economists agree that there is ZERO saving to consumers!!! The suspension would only hike oil company profits! Besides, the suspension would cost 7000 construction jobs in NC because of the lost $9 billion highway fund!

The trouble is not she got the problem wrong, but she got it wrong purposely to fool the voters.

150 Economists, including 3 Nobel Prize Winners, issued an open letter May 2 opposing suspension of gas tax for the summer and called it a bad public policy. The letter says "Signers of this letter are Democrats, Republicans and Independents.”

Those economist that are driving around in their Porsches and represent big oil, leigh? You support them cause your in their Tax Bracket? You might want to vote Republican, if you like them and trust them so much. They sure have done a great job with the United States haven't they? Four dollar a gallon fuel, 10 dollar a pound steak, 2 bucks a loaf of bread. Keep believing in that ole hope and change and do nothing leaders. By the way what kind of car are you driving?

The Clintons are so corrupt and slimey, I'm surprised they can enter a church without melting.

Posted by: New Yorker for Obama | May 4, 2008 6:52:36 PM

Why does the gas tax holiday have to make economic sense? Consumer confidence is down. People are worried about the future. They lack confidence in the government--both the President and Congress. They are desperate for relief.

The gas tax holiday signals an undersetanding that there is a problem and lets people know that the government is working to address it. Its meant to provide a psychological boost to individuals -- its meant to offer them, for lack of a better word, hope that things will get better.

It makes as much economic sense as taking a bubble bath in the middle of a drought in water-starved Atlanta ... but it provides a much needed emotional break from the fear of constantly rising gas prices. Most of the time you take the three minute shower because its the responsible thing to do but sometimes -- just sometimes -- you have to indulge yourself a little just to feel human.

If it helps people feel better about themselves and their government, why not do it? So long as we make up the costs somewhere else what does it hurt?

Posted by: jlynne | May 4, 2008 6:58:52 PM

If Hillary does not make it I am forst time voting for John McCain!

Posted by: Albert, NC | May 4, 2008 7:02:11 PM

Point is Obama and Clinton believes government is the answer to all the Nation's problems and demonize private industry as they want all the power. The truth is the price of gas is all about supply and demand. China and the rest of the world are competing with the USA for oil and OPEC is controlling the supply so prices go up. If Obama and Clinton were for the USA drilling for oil in Alaska, building new refineries and nuclear power plants, I might think they were really interested in lowering the price of gas and food for blue collar workers and the middle class. Fact is Obama and Clinton are in the tank with the green loons who will do anything to stop the USA from getting more energy for the people at cheaper prices. Instead both Obama and Clinton lie to the people about the so called pipe dreams of alternative energy like bio fuels that are causing food prices to go sky high and food riots in third world Nations. Obama and Clinton are false prophets who hold out empty promises of a Utopian world run and ruled by them. Problem is their vision of a Utopian world will put us all into the poor house while the State worker, politicians and Rezko types are laughing all the way to the bank with the people's money lining their pockets.

Posted by: dean | May 4, 2008 7:06:34 PM

Hey Obama would sell his wife!
I would not mind to buy it once, if she becomes for sale?
Didn;t she make bad remarks against America anyways?
She may really become available?
I can not belive those black people out there still hoping from this dishonest man!
He just betrayed his pastor!!!

Posted by: Peter, IN | May 4, 2008 7:09:16 PM

Just a Voter
Sorry, do not agree with you. Both Clinton and Obama want all the power so they can decide how the peoples money is spent and how we all live. So their character and judgment is what counts when it comes to deciding if they deserve to be given all this power. In my view, Obama is a very bad judge of character and Clinton will do anything to be President. Thus, I do not trust giving either of them any power over the lives of the American people. The truth government has a very bad track record when it comes to solving problems. All government does is line the pockets of government workers, politicians and Rezko types and what little of the peoples money is left over may than, if we are lucky, go back to the people.

Posted by: Angel | May 4, 2008 7:21:06 PM

Rick, you just lost all street cred with your last post. Anyone that thinks Bill or Hillary Clinton haven't stood up for people of any color under the rainbow knows nothing about them.

Posted by: Beau | May 4, 2008 7:25:25 PM

Ask the people in New Orleans, Minneapolis, and Boston what they think of the Highway Fund -- and toss in the Corp of Engineers while you're at it.
We should be doing more to fix our levees, bridges, tunnels and highways than putting a few cents tax on gasoline and telling a government agency to spend it however they want to.

Our infastructure is in horrible shape--despite the gas tax. We need to find a way to fix it and we need to fully fund those projects. The gas tax isn't the only money that government has -- heck, why not throw some of the money from capital gains taxes or income taxes towards those projects.

Posted by: jlynne | May 4, 2008 7:26:27 PM

Oops, capital gains taxes are income taxes. Maybe I should have said end the Bush tax cuts and use the restored estate tax to replace the funds lost from the gas tax holiday. Or at least use those funds to pay for repairs to the infastructure.

Posted by: jlynne | May 4, 2008 7:30:42 PM

Rick,
I know what you say but Obama can not win a GE and we are backing Clinton in NC!
Not that Obama is a bad man, but it is just simple, he can 't win the crutial states!
Belive me, I analized about it!
I am voting for Hillary in NC,
She is better than to walk McCain to tyhe White House in November!Don't you agree?
Thanks anyway,

Posted by: orlando, NC | May 4, 2008 7:33:01 PM

Government does not solve problems in most cases they cause problems. Just look at the attempt to solving global warming via bio fuels. The outcome, food prices are going sky high and there are food riots in third world Nations. Just name one major government program that works well and does not have a lot of top heavy overhead where most of the money goes. I bet you can't. More inefficient, top heavy and do as I tell you or else government programs is what you will get if you vote for Obama or Clinton. The free market and creativity of the American people is what makes this country work, solves problems and produces all the products and services the people really want and need. Not government.

When I read some of the comments on here, I wonder about the kind of nation I will leave my grandchildren. My aunt lived to be 113 years old and I remember her saying when she was 106 yoa that the difference then versus now was that "people didn't love each other like they use to do". I found that a strange saying from a woman that lived through Jim Crow and who's father the Paddy Rollers ran off his land and killed (for those that don't know the paddy rollers were a group that predated the Klan). However, when I look at the infighting among democrate
and the bitterness and division of this country...I think she got it right. However, we have a chance to end the divisiveness, heal our nation and thus our land, but we can't do it with more slick politics and lies.

What if McCain names Condi Rice as VP and Obama is not on the Democratic ticket? Will she carry the black vote for McCain? What if Carly Fiorina is his VP? Will she carry the female vote for McCain if Hillary is not on the ticket? That's the risk we run when we play identity politics.

The black population might skew the results of the primary elections, but they aren't a large enough number to make a dent in the general election.
They'll get their wish that Obama is our nominee, and we all won't get our wish of a Democratic victory.

earl, first time i saw obama on oprah, i turned to my brother and said someday this man should be president. great speaker, charisma, smooth, whats not to like? well i can answer that. His platform is lacking, he's full of vauge and empty promises, he kisses up to the old guard way too much. Why do you think people like ted, and john, and bill richardson balked at supporting Clinton? Its simple. They cannot control her. obama needs to learn that independence. in spite of his huge popularity he comes accross as mousy and unsure of himself and fails to follow thru on the promises he made; that made him a different candidate. Change and hope are just buzz words. In spite of that, i would love to see a Clinton/Obama Presidential ticket.

The black vote can have a tremendous impact on Congressional races and should not be ignored. They have less impact on the presidential race because of demographic patterns but it doesn't mean their voices are not important. Obama was right in his Phladelphia speech--we need to find a way for the races to work together for the common good. Unfortunately, we can't seem to agree on what the common good is or how to get there.

Well, it's funny. It might be Bill that needs the prayer. Don't get me wrong. I'm not religious and appreciate his philandering. But then I wouldn't solicit meaningless prayers for anyone. It might appear to be hypocritical.

Hillary has experience, voting unequivocally for the invasion of Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of deaths later, who knows how many maimings and a ruin of a nation of 25 million, her supporters ignore that. They have no more morals or ethics than the most extreme Bush supporter.

Beau: Well said Beau! Well said.

Whether Obama becomes POTUS or not, I am not sure I would want him to have the support of Hillary's supporters. Their unabashed support of a warmonger, who supported the worst action by the US since the Vietnam War, is disgusting. Like those Democrats who failed us in that insanity, you too are spineless.

I hope those who has been praying, has seen the vision that the candidate that is good for us now is obama,we should all pray for him for strength, more wisdom, knowledge and understand.

Clinton voted for the Iraq war. A war for oil. Even poor McCain said it a few days ago. How could her conscience be clear knowing that the war killed 4000 of our best men and women not to mention hundreds and thousands of Iraqi civilians?

well Rick again, quit talking about suspected, we think, might have, or my first cousin whose second cousins frist wife told me. Here's a fact.
Ted Kennedy left Mary Jo to drown at Chippaquidick. John Kerry is only surpassed by that idiot that runs the DNC in getting his butt kicked politically.Bill Richardson swore to the Clintons he was on their side, and admitted he got stoned with obama and forgot who he was supposed to back for the nomination. These are obamas supporters. My Great Aunts Brothers 3rd cousin told me that story one night over hot chocolate and BLT's. (I admit they don't have a lot of smarts he's a truck driver and thinks Gas is too high, so there is a chance this story is not true. crazy huh?)But, go ahead and keep listening to hanratty. You could have just said you were a Republican and be done with it. You know Clinton kicks maclame in the GE. Thats why you want obama. No wonder you know nothing about the Clintons.

Post a commen

Jlynne,

In order to seek the common good for all people, it starts with having the capacity to tell the truth. While Obama, may not be a perfect person, he has that one indispensable character trait and that is the ability to be honest and tell the truth. To bridge a divide, you must tell the truth and admit there is a divide, to bring people together, you can't tell them a gas tax holiday is good only for them to find out later that you knew darn good and well it was a bad idea and you were just pandering for votes. You can't promise the hispanics you are going to favor them and support free trade and for more us businesses to build more plants in Mexico while telling the blue collar workers in Pa, NC, Ind you are going to help keep jobs in the US. You can't have your husband and your strategist out cutting back door deals with the columbians to ship more jobs overseas and fattening the pockets of your strategist, who happens to be the CEO of the consulting firm the columbian use to try and get the free trade agreement, then she lies and says she has always been against the free trade agreement. How can you have common good Jlynne, when the candidate is acting like a common hood? How can we band together when her moral character is soooo wanting. Do you want someone with a nepolian complexs running around threatening to obliterate other countries, while refusing to have face to face talks with them. I think Hillary would be a national nighmare as President. I think its time for a woman President, just not this one.

Obama; by the true facts, in which one of you writers already listed over 70 reasons NOT to vote for Obama. I also feel the horrifics of putting Obama (a possible cell) in the White House is like putting the Trojan "gift" horse in a very powerful position to do alot of American damage. It scares the @#@# out of me that so many Americans are buying into Obama's hollow words! God help the futures of our own children or grandchildren is all I can say!

The more I see of Hillary, the more I like her. And I am a die-hard Republican but am very wary of McCain. I'm glad President Clinton was dignified in the churches. It makes for a good day.

No...Bottom Line is this.

It really looks like Obama has this thing won, by any plausible measure.

But if lightening were to strike, and Hillary gets the nomination (and Presidency) we will have a LIAR for President, with another (annoying) LIAR always around as well (BillyBoy).

When Obama is President, we will have a Truthful President.

THAT is the bottom line.
