Bill Clinton: Once Fla. and Mich. Are Counted, Neither Candidate Able to Get Majority From Pledged Delegates
May 24, 2008 5:21 PM
ABC News’ Sarah Amos reports: Former President Bill Clinton today continued to reiterate the importance of counting the votes in Florida and Michigan, saying that once they do "neither candidate can get a majority just from pledged delegates.”
Speaking to a crowd of more than 1,000 at Montana State University, Clinton enthusiastically took to the stage and began by asking the crowd, "Aren't you glad Montana matters?"
While the former president has been off the campaign trail for the past few days, Sen. Hillary Clinton has been forceful in her calls for all the votes in the two disputed states to be counted. Today, her husband continued that argument.
"The last three states have all been told they didn’t matter. But don’t you believe it,” he said, “because the Democratic Committee is meeting at the end of this month to resolve the status of Florida and Michigan and they'll have to do it, unless we just totally slip the gasket and want to go into a general election where Sen. McCain gets to run in 50 states and we run in 48. Once that happens, neither candidate can get a majority just from pledged delegates, so there will be a reassessment after you vote on June 3, along with South Dakota and Puerto Rico votes on June 1.
He continued, “So don’t let anybody tell you, you don’t matter, you do. And Hillary's position on this all along has simply been that we should all -- in a contest this close -- we should let everybody vote, let every vote be counted and have the people who hold the balance of power decide who would be the best president and who is the most likely to beat Sen. McCain. So you do matter," Clinton told the applauding crowd.
President Clinton has two more stops today in Montana before heading off to South Dakota for Sunday’s campaign events.

What makes Hillary think she doesn't have to abide by the rules? She herself signed the agreement that Michigan and Florida would forfeit their delegates if they broke the party rule on too- early primary dates. Now she not only insists that they be counted, but she's also positioning herself to exclude caucus states, while simultaneously exhorting everyone to "count each vote." How can she get away with this double-speak? She's going to claim that the nomination was stolen from her; that we need a new system. So much for wanting to represent her party. She's only in it for self-promotion, based on all the arguments she's advancing. And no humility whatsoever about her "assassination" remarks. I had hoped for better from her. How we need someone who doesn't "play politics as usual."

I'm tired of the Obama double-talk games and bullying. They claim to be above the fray but they are looking for ammunition on Hillary 24/7. I can't even believe that FL and MI happened with the help of a FL Governor, now being called FL "first Black Governor" and being considered as McCain's VP.
I've though all along that Obama is where he is -- the least experienced man to run for Preident in modern times -- because of some "payback" Ted Kennedy owed the Reublicans and Dean throwing the nomination in 2008 to Obama to stop Hillary. Hillary is a brilliant electable candidate who truly would buck the status quo. There's sexism involved and lawyer speak type cheating and it stinks.
I feel like who cares if mCian wins. Obama is more like Bush than McCain, and has threatened Nuclear war with Pakistan. i don't trust Obama to create Paeec or deliver on any promises. If we can't have Hillary, I'll take McCain. Obama is a vicious liar con artist actor.

To Judy
She has not or can not change the rules. The rules are that NO ONE is the NOMINEE YET! READ THE RULES! JUST DUMB!

Personally, I do not care about the super delegate debate. I voted for Clinton because I am really a middle of the road democrat from California. I have never voted Republican. However,McCain being a middle of the road Republican will probably get my vote in November if Obama wins. I do not vote extreme right or left. And, I do not believe most Americans do either. So no matter how much money Obama has or spends, Obama does have serious problems come November. One good point in all of this, any of the existing candidates will be better than George Bush. In fact, Clinton, Obama and McCain are all great candidates.

My my, you republican ditto-heads are sure on a tear today, eh? This has just got to be annoying the hell out of you folks that you great inspiration, old Rush Limberger cheese guy plan's for world domination fell through. Yep, Agent Hillary Clinton, Republican spokesman (yep, not a typo, "man"), isn't going to help bail you out this year. Nope, sorry to say, it's political wilderness time! Looking forward to taunting the republican boards about all this unelectable stuff. Can you say it, you know you can so better get used to it, "President Barack Obama"! Yep, sounds pretty damn good! Hope Jacksmith don't have a stroke trying to comprehend this.

I am an Obama donator....and I agree that Hillary should not concede until after June 3.
I admire her for keeping her hat in the ring for as long as she has.
Remember, people....these two candidates are almost IDENTICAL on every single issue. The differences between them is like splitting hairs.
The party is sorting itself out. Let the process complete (that ends June 3) and stop making such a drama of it.
My appeal.
ps - Now, if HRC starts making a big deal AFTER that, and pressures pledged delegates to switch, or launches an independent 3rd party campaign in the fall.....that's another matter.

I agree with Cass... Rules?????? Who ever said we could have an election with 48 States voting, but Obama has been manipulating every aspect of this race to suit him. he had the press on the ropes based on race. His hit man Axelrod attacked Hillary in the press 24/4 with willing Journalists. Sexism. Viciousness. Bullying at the Caucuses. Obama is a sheister lawyer in sheeps clothing and a talented actor. Who has he ever helped? It didn't matter, his goal is to stop Hillary, make a fortune in books and pave the way for McCain. Obama has ###### off so many people he'll never win and he's never accomplished much in goverment so people don't have confidenec in him accept his cult following and youth followers, Black broc, sexist, and drug users. The rest of America won't vote for Obama. he's a con man and evereyone knows that's so. Of course he'll blame his loss on race and Hillary. The writing is on the wall. Obama is Democrat loss #3.
Obama destroyed Hillary with smearing not the other way around as he's always cliaming. What a phony Obama is. I won't vote for him, that's for sure. He ruined Democrats chance for a win and because he had no patience and he is vicious and underhanded. He's a down and dirty politician not different or better.

Its very odd to hear Pres. Clinton say "don't let anyone tell you you don't count." As far as I can tell, non-one's ever said these later states don't count ... except perhaps Sen. Clinton herself, who famously said that the nomination would be sewn up by Super Tuesday (making these contests moot).

bob10001,
Actually, even pledged delegates can change their minds within the convention rules. It already happened. Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson, MD delegate switched from Obama to Clinton to Obama.

The democratic party has been hijacked. They no longer represent most of their base...One thing that they have been good at in the past few years is losing!
HEllo President Mccain!

I don't trust Obama to end the war. he fired his Foeign policy adviser for leaking that he had no real plans to end the war. he threatened nuclear war with Pakistan. Obama is more like Bush than McCain. All his campaign promises are like toilet paper to me... I don't trust him, because he's not a man of change he's a man of ambition and will always follow the money.

And California says the Democratic Nominee for PResident should be HILLARY CLINTON, and so did every other major state. If you believe Obama can win the Presidency than clearly you are not watching the bottom line, which is typical of most Democrats. Spend, spend, spend says the Liberal Left that supports Obama. The Moderates say Invest into the future wisely, have a plan, and pay attention to National Security. The moderates (most of the country) and the rights will support either Hillary, or McCain. Obama cannot and willnot sway the moderate vote, particularly because of his relationships with some pretty scummy people. I mean, staunch Dems I know, don't even feel comfortable about voting for Obama.
Obama is only hear because of the horrible, unfair, and biased caucus voting system. Obama and the Dems can thank the highly liberal Political Activists of the party for even a sniff of the nomination.
The Democrats better wise up, if they think they have any clue how to win in November.
John Kerry, who???

This is why Obama is doing everything he can to suppress the voice of these two states.
If the DNC wants to punish Florida and Michigan then they can but they need to punish the politicians and not the people. For example, they can push Florida's back as the last state to vote in the next presidential election. But they have absolutely no right to:
1. Play God to decide how people vote and how their vote should be counted. If they vote for Clinton then it is hers. If they vote uncommitted then they should be uncommitted to reflect the voters’ intent. For anything less than 100% then Clinton and these voters should sue the party for all what it worth!
2. Reward Obama for his cold calculated move to temper with the election process. He consciously made the decision to take his name off the Michigan’s ballot while keeping it on in Florida. He ran TV ads in Florida and ran a very strong drive to ask people to vote uncommitted. He knew that he has a high chance to loose then and made this deliberate decision.
3. Help hiding the fact that none of the so-called civil rights leaders (i.e., Lewis) are not stepping up to make this demand. It is now obvious that they should now be called civil rights oppressors”, or Obama's puppets!

Matt: A majority of pledged delegates means nothing. Finish line is 2025, will be 2029 after 5/31 meeting. And, superdelegates entire purpose is to decide AT not before the Democratic National Convention. What does that tell you about the DNC -- they're putting their puppet in, despite the will of the people. Why on earth would someone who had 17 million people vote for her drop out. Judging from how she's gracefully handled the rough ride she's gotten from Obama, MSM, and the DNC, she's much more prepared.
Oh, and now Obama supporters are threatening riots? I've been hearing this for months now. Thuggery and intimidation have invaded this election, and people are noticing these illegal, subversive, bullying, race-baiting tactics. It's disgusting, and the Dem Party should be ashamed to be fostering. They should be condemning it. Lifelong Dems are leaving the Party, and your candidate will lose.
Posted by: JM | May 24, 2008 7:19:47 PM
I'm not sure why HIllary supporters think HIllary is a moderate dem and obamas some Radical left wing dem.
If you looks at their voting records they voted pretty much the same way.
If you look at their stances on healthcare, education, Iraq, economy. They are pretty much in agreement.

The reason Obama has outspent Hillary is because he has the money. He is not in debt. I just read an article today that Hillary owes Indiana University $55,000. The University doesn't know when or if they will get their money. You Hillary supporters need to send her some money to pay her bills. I don't want my tax money to pay her bill
Posted by: larry | May 24, 2008 7:21:38 PM
To older person
Stop with the 4 more years of war. Bush started this war and NO ONE will be able to end it right away. So stop the Bush fear tactics. They will all end the war it is just a matter of HOW. You can not just pull out. Hillary has the best RESPONSIBLE plan and if not her than I would trust McCain before I would trust a Media Created Fake like Obama. He is Unqualifies Period!
Posted by: Matt | May 24, 2008 7:22:16 PM
For all the Hillary supporters writing that you will vote for McCain when (not if) Obama gets the nod, I have a few questions:
1. Do you not care about the war in Iraq?
2. Do you not care about the health care crisis in this country?
3. Do you really think that we should pass on massive amounts of debt to our children by continuing the Bush/McCain tax cuts for the wealthy?
By caring only about the person and not the policies, you are choosing a specific path for yourselves and your children. An effective leader (which Obama has undoubtedly proven himself to be by organizing a campaign that has defeated the best brand name in politics) with the right policy vision is infinitely better than a third Bush term. Infinitely.
Why cut off your nose to spite your face?
