Clinton at Indy: Life, Racing and Politics are Unpredictable
May 06, 2008 12:54 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow and Eloise Harper report: Sen. Hillary Clinton’s only public appearance today was geared toward the very voters she desperately needs to turn out for her today in Indiana—white, working class, fans of fast cars whizzing around a fast track in the May sunshine.
The racing analogies came quick at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
“We need to get on the track in America and get toward the finish line and change this country,” Clinton said.
Asked on this primary day by ABC News if she would definitely stay in the race no matter what happens tonight, Clinton didn’t make a firm commitment.
"I'm always interested in finding out what voters actually think,” she said. “Because there's all kinds of speculation. It would be like predicting who would win the Indy 500 before it even starts. We don't know. People prepare. They work hard. They do their best. Life is unpredictable. Racing is unpredictable. Politics is unpredictable. So I'm just going to wait and see what the voters have to say.”
The Senator also tried to re-set the bar for winning the Democratic nomination. Asked what the “finish line” of the race is she said for the first time: “I think it’s 2209.”
That figure—2209 delegates—assumes that Florida and Michigan’s delegates are included in the overall count. The Democratic Party has long said the magic number for winning the nomination was 2025, a number that does not include Florida and Michigan.
By re-setting the finish line, the Clinton campaign may be able to argue that Obama has not “won” the race if he reaches or gets close to 2025.
Clinton said claiming 2209 as the goal was not “disingenuous”.
“There are going to be the rest of these contests which are very significant and then in June if we haven't done it already were going to have to resolve Florida and Michigan. And they were legitimate elections,” she said.
Clinton visited “gasoline alley” to stop by the garage of one of the few female drivers to compete in the Indy 500, Sarah Fisher. Fisher endorsed Clinton earlier this month.
“If I press this what am I doing?” the Senator asked as she held a steering wheel from Fisher’s car in her hands.
Clinton said she’s often remarked that politics is like driving-- “if you want to go forward you put it in D, go backward you put it in R.”
“Just so you know, we don’t have reverse in this car. It doesn’t exist,” Fisher shot back.
Clinton said she was impressed by the technology she saw on Fisher’s racecar.
“These are so smooth,” she said admiring the tires.
Her appearance drew surprised race fans who had come to see the first day of practice for all of the Indy drivers.
“Did we come to see race cars or politicians?” one man was heard complaining to a female companion who insisted they stand and wait for Senator Clinton to come by.
“She’s just doin’ it to get on the news,” said a yellow-shirt-wearing safety patrolman of the Senator’s quick pit stop at Indy.

Raleigh Voter: as of super tuesday, the more people knew of Obama the more they voted for him. You are right. April wasn't a good month to get to know Obama from an Obama supporters point of view :)

Please dont talk about Obama not getting white vote because how on earth has he come this far, only black votes and black money???. No,no,no the fact is there are millions of white americans who truely love their country want to see real change and hope for themselves and their children are supporting Obama.

Jim...why don't you give us some evidence to how Clinton would lead us into the "abyss" and how the other candidates could not possibly do so since they are just SO wonderful?
While you are at it, you can copy and paste the numerous state/federal programs put into place by Hillary when she was first lady that you are obviously not aware of. She has helped countless Americans with her good work. This should take up quite a few pages.
People that make such judgmental statements like yours, just proves that the many voters are ignorant to the real issues and have a slanted perception about the candidates.

I believe that it is now that we are getting to know the real Obama. Just another politician is what I have been seeing.
I would like someone to explain just WHAT makes him different, other than him saying he is.

Obama is the kind of politician we can not believe.

Every time we learn something more about Obama the more he proves to be Unelectable

Obama will drag the Democratic Party down. He's way too far to the left for main stream America. After 8 years of the far right, we're going to elect someone more from the middle. That's either Hillary or McCain. Take one of those out of the equation, and the other is the President. It's just how it is.

S McEaston: Wow. Let me get this straight. She entitled because . . . she's wanted it for a long time? she has more X chromosons than Obama? the evil blacks wanted to step on her hopes and dreams?
How about this? Obama also thinks he can do a good job as president. Obama's supporters like his message better than hers. Many Obama supporters are actually for Obama, not against Hillary. By your logic, would it be fair to say that if Obama loses, it is women's fault? Maybe just old people?

Emily and Bishop are RIGHT!!
Everybody knows that Math is bad.
Algebra is even worse and don't get started on calculus because that's just plain evil.
Go with what you feel is right. If 2209 feels right, then it is right. Don't let these bozo elitists talk down to you about numbers.
Rise Hillary Rise!

Too bad that Obama does not want to engage in a negative campaign. He could have shown the Hillary Bosnia lie footage over and ever again as she did to him on his "bitter" comments. If he did, she would be crushed a long time ago. He did not even mention it unless when asked. I am sure the Republicans will if they need to.

Nicholas: You said it right. Obama has the worst reputation of any candidate that ran for office in this country. Between, Ayers, Ayres, Farrakhan and Wright the anti-american pastor who hates white people, I am amazed that so many white people vote for Obama. He is not going to make changes in Washington and the word hope came from one of RFK's speeches when he was campaigning. Obama doesn't have the brains to think for himself, he has to have copied speeches. I believe Hillary will win in Indiana and come extremely close in NC which will not look good for Obama.

The MSM is in the tank for Obama. I have been watching CNN and just saw Cafferty put out a survey question from his blogs that lump Clinton and McCain together on the gas tax proposal. This was debunked by experts as being a lie that the Obama campaign put out in its latest ad. I am amazed at how stupid I have been. My degree from Berkely did not help me know the difference between a real democrat and a fake one. Obama is a fake!

Did Hillary look at the helmet that she is holding? Why is she holding a HONDA helmet?

Jimt:
what a joke...it shows the way politicians and Obama ppl think...
can you explain what the Bosnia incident indicates about Hill...and I will explain what the 2 footages (Wright and about PA) about Obama indicates about his..personal views..PS. and not being able to differentiate ..tells something about the way politics has gotten to us ….

Melissa:
Great point!..typical Media...spinning...and yes the biggest (fake-hypocrite) of all...while he’s campaigning about “change” he’s been doing the exact same as all those politicians …nothing diff…!!just taking advantage of the.. “stupidity ” … (the Wright incident spells it all out …where was he until now? suddenly ..he’s become ….its all .. politics to fool YOU etc.… PS. can’t believe how ppl fell for that speech (although a great one ..but has nothing to do….)
Posted by: mlow | May 6, 2008 10:51:19 PM
jimt - correction I meant - "leighg1"
Ps as am at it... agree with you...it's a pure obstruction of democracy …thousands and millions voices silenced all because a few politicians decided ‘Iowa caucuses’ are more important there should be no law that can enable that... (which btw is an issue on its own…the whole voting system is corrupt –especially at the Dems. …Starting from the caucuses..)

Hillary hasn't been doing very well at the Racetracks over the past few days....and I don't mean to belittle the Significance of the "Horse Lovers" or "Indy Lovers" vote!!
But Showing up at INDY on the day of the North Carolina Primary didn't help her with the NASCAR fans in Carolina, that's for sure!!
Posted by: John Skilbred | May 7, 2008 4:54:54 AM
AND why isn't Florida and Michigan going to be counted? Yet ANOTHER issue with Florida about voting....Florida counts and SHOULD count....I've had enough of votes not being counted....LET THE PEOPLE SPEAK!!!!!
Hillary, you're in it for the long run and we're here to support you....Obama is an intelligent person, but just not ready for the Presidents seat yet......KEEP GOING HILLARY...and let's take away this "RACE" issue...it's doing nothing but dividing ourselves amongst each other....when USA is falling apart, I don't think we'll ask what color caused it or corrected the problem....let's just get someone who can take care of our issues...they can be PURPLE for all I care.....but if a purple person does it better than black or white, then I vote PURPLE.....JUST GET SOMEONE IN OFFICE WHO CAN TURN OUR COUNTRY BACK AROUND from the MORON who's in office now(or I should say "out of office", mentally)
