Clinton Continues to Paint Obama as Out of Touch
May 05, 2008 5:46 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, landed in Indiana Monday and picked up where she left off yesterday – hammering Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., hard on the gas tax.
"I think it’s a false choice as my opponent and others have been trying to say. ‘Oh we can’t do anything in the short run to help people – we can only worry (about) the long run.’ People live in the short run. People get up every day and have to go fill up their tanks."
Clinton wanted the people of Merrillville, IN to know that she understands the value of the dollar. Speaking about her plan to have the oil companies pay the gas tax this summer Clinton said, "My opponent Senator Obama, he disagrees with me. He wants you to pay it. Not the oil companies. And he’s always going on TV, and he’s always saying ‘oh you know that’s just like $20 dollars.’ Well you know for a lot people $20 dollars is something right? $20 dollars means something."
Clinton pointed out the importance of the race tomorrow in a larger context – but the outcome in Indiana is equally critical for the survival of her campaign. "Tomorrow is consequential. Every election is important. But this one holds special significance. Because after what we have been through these last seven years – we know we’ve got to get a hold of our country."
Concluding her remarks, Clinton pointed to a sign she had seen in the audience and said, "I do see you, and I do hear you. I do believe that you’re doing the best you can under difficult circumstances and were going to get in there and we’re going to reverse these circumstances but in the meantime lets provide a little help along the way. So you feel like you’ve got some leadership again."

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Clinton Continues to Paint Obama as Out of Touch:
The problem for Obama is the fact he never offered up any alternative for the gas tax holliday.
He just sat there pointing the finger at his opponent. Voters sit in the middle and could care less about the political MIND GAMES .
They just see one person actually TRY to do something, and the other one whining and complaining about it.
Obama had the high road on the gas tax, but then BLEW IT by not offering anything himself.

Hill has no respect for people, considering that everybody has to listen to her immature ideas about this gas holiday which came from McCain by the way, is just unthinkable. Her plan is to make 28 cents available for everybody by taking money from road and bridge safety funds i.e. giving us 28 cents money to go on unsafe roads and bridges, that is just incredible. Can somebody tell her that even McCain has abandonned the idea. Can she stop insulting our intelligence. We know that she is hunting the blue-color again or the old, but please this does not make it. God save America from BillHilary, FoxNews, McCain and Hannety. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Hillary is the best candidate in this race. She is talking to us, we can hear her well, she is connecting with middle class America, the people that win elections. Her husband is doing the same going to small towns, talking to the people and listening to them, can't be better than that. In the other hand Obama is all about big speeches, big campaign events, long term solutions only, dream of the future, etc. We can't have a future if we can't tackle the current issues head on and to do that we need leadership. As Bill Clinton did it in the past Hillary will do it again and probably better. We need a leader and she is showing us the real Hillary. Obama should learn from her and from Bill instead of trying to divide the party blind for his personal ambitions!
Go Hillary, the country needs you, we Democrats need you!
Hillary 2008

So 20 dollars is being in touch? Sounds like pandering to me.
Go Pander Bear!

If Obama is "out of touch," then so are the majority of the voters who voted for him, NOT for her. An alternate, and more likely explanation, is that Clinton is not telling the truth--AGAIN--out of desperation for her failed candidacy. Clinton is toast!
Posted by: Justinteim | May 5, 2008 6:08:47 PM
It is very funny Obama offered nothing but complaining...This is the exactly what he is: "empty' speech vs substance....
What good things has he done to Americans so far??

Most Obama supporters are gambling, voting for a completely untested candidate without no records, experience, bills passed or proven leadership. I can tell they watch way to much reality shows and bought into the millions of dollars in ads, Hollywood production stages, big arenas entertainment like events and cheap rhetoric.
Obama has never been a leader, no even in Chicago or Illinois. I went to school at the U. of Chicago and never heard of this dude. I heard of his wife, that she was a power hunger cocky lady. Thats it!
No with Obama. This are not times to teach a wimp or light weight candidate. We need a leader that is tough and can deal with big issues.
Go Hillary 2008!

No solution is all Obama EVER offers.

Clinton sold out America when she voted for the Iraq war. She was out of touch with reality then and she out of touch with reality now.
She didn't have the spine then to standup, and she doesn't have it now.
She and the majority of Congress, did not have the moral authority to lead then, and they do not now.
She and the majority of Congress do not deserve our vote.

Hillary...
You can't even pump your own gas and you don't know how to operate a coffee machine!!!!!
Who's really "out of touch" here?

Obama is out of touch with regular folks. Go Hillary/McCain.
Posted by: kittyCat | May 5, 2008 6:28:27 PM
Several misconceptions have been posted by Obama supporters concerning the gas tax suspension proposal.
Initially, Hillary Clinton's proposal would require that any lost revenues resulting from the temporary gas tax suspension would be paid for with oil company profits.
The boogeyman approach of those who would have us believe the temporary tax elimination will make roads unsafe or eliminate jobs suggests misunderstanding or an attempt at misinformation.
For those who suggest that a few cents a gallon is not enough, you are proabably right.
But, no one piece of legislation is going to get the economy back up and running as it should be.
Simply put, the economic woes did not emerge overnight and will require a lot of changes, not just the temporary suspension of a tax.
But, it is a start, and at least Clinton and McCain are doing something.
Regarding this issue, Barack Obama has done....
Nothing....

I guess the fact that 200 of the nations leading economists have written a letter proclaiming the Gas tax repeal a bad decision. Hillary is going to double down on the bad decision in order to pander for votes in the short term. Next she will be outright paying for votes. She is shameless and scandal ridden.

Peter_Indy for Hill, could you tell us what Hill has done as a senator, she is trying to run on the performance of her huseband in the 1990s, we have to understand that old solutions cannot work in the 21 st century. Look at her offer for a gas holiday which she has stollen from McCain, do you believe that that kind of politics will work in 2008? Pathetic, America needs real solutions and not pandering. The "Born to lead-Clinons Cult" will not work this time around. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.
Posted by: BKMC | May 5, 2008 6:54:43 PM
If Hillary thinks that $20 or $30 dollars is going to help me survive it shows that she is out of touch and an elitist. Only those who have millions of dollars would think that a couple of dollars will solve my problems is soooooo out of touch.

Obama doesn't' even know what to say if he isn't in front of a TelePrompTer. When left along, he stutters as if he's trying Clairvoyance to catch the waves of his keepers. Never has there been a less competent candidate.
And his promise of hope without any knowledge of where his new direction is going. He's a NO ISSUE candidate who preys on the mentally weak.
Posted by: T | May 5, 2008 6:56:29 PM
Poor Poor Peter in Indy is out trolling for the losing cause. You are a typical dead ender peter in indy. I feel sorry for you. You are with the anti-hope candidate. That is sad and despicable. To answer your weak minded and dimunitive question; THE IRAQ WAR!!!

Come on folks. A gas tax holiday?? Nothing but pandering for votes on Hillary and McCain's part. Gas users would realize less than $4.00 per tank under this grand scheme. How stupid do they think we are??
Posted by: JB | May 5, 2008 7:03:21 PM
This college educated young woman is voting for Hillary. Obama is in it for his ego, not for the good of the people. He feels he is entitled, where Hillary knows she has to work hard to have the respect of the American people.
Hillary 2008!

"He wants you to pay it. Not the oil companies."
That is a straight lie and Clinton knows it. According to independent factcheck.org as well as numerous experts, it is Clintons (and McCains) plan that will most likely benefit the oil companies, while not helping gas comsumers. In fact, they predict that it might end up increasing them.
On top of being so obviously wrong, does she have to go and lie about her opponent? How low can she go?
Posted by: El_Pajaro | May 5, 2008 7:12:46 PM
Clinton's "ideas" are non-ideas, empty and devoid of meaning, e.g. the gas tax gimmick. She's blatantly pandering to the less-educated.

I hate to the 109 million dollar lady - $30 bucks in my pocket over a four month period ain't cuttin it. Besides - isn't she talking out of both sides of her mouth - we'll let big oil pay for the tax - in the meanwhile they will just jack up the price to recoup their loss - more of the same from Clintons

Saying “our relationship has changed” will not ensure that Pastor Jeremiah Wright, Ayes, Rezko, Meeks, and Farrakhan will not be invited by a President Barack Obama to the White House. Once Sen. Obama clearly states that “I have will not have any relationship“ with these individuals, then Obama will clearly tell Americans that he has broken ties with his friends of 20 years.
Honest American’s don’t need much to wonder about the Senator from Illinois. Each time he talks, it is one lie after another. His most recent slip was today when Obama told the teamsters that if they have a friend in the White House, they could get things done. Sure does not sound like a new type of politician. Same old politician except the Senator from Illinois isn’t honest enough to tell the truth. When I hear Sen. Barack Obama say that he will not have “any relationship” with his mentor and spiritual guide Pastor Jeremiah Wright, Rezko, Farankam, and Ayers, then I will believe that once in the White House he won’t claim forgiveness when Obama has these individuals in the White House.

Forgot to mention Sen. Hillary Clinton stated her summer tax plan is part of her long-term plan (O'Rielly Factor interview). Unlike the unknowledgable and inexperienced Senator from Illinois, Sen. Clinton knows how to help all Americans.

Nicholas, all those democrates you mentioned had to win the nomination fair and square. Clinton was the overwhelming favorite in December to have it in the bag by February 5. But she blew it. Why? Well just maybe she's the one who's the loser.

There is nothing ABC news can do to stop Sen. Clinton from becoming President. About three years ago a well known televangelist, Perry Stone Jr., told his congregation that God spoke to him and said Sen. Clinton will be the next President. This information can be obtained from one of his published works on CD entitled “Strange Patterns of Recent American Presidents.” On track 7 of this CD, he tells us that Sen. Clinton will once again be in the White House. So give it up ABC News. And Barack, your days are numbered.

The problem with the gas tax cut is a lot of that $30 would go to into the pockets of the oil companies and distributors, not the people who need help so you and I do not receive anything near $30. That is but one of the reasons no economists back this idea. Desperately wanting to "do something because people are hurting" leads to more harm than good. A thoughtful candidate would propose sending the $30 (or some other amount) to usd directly so it actually gets to us and not big oil. Oh wait, one candidate did suggest that.
Posted by: ToastOnDayOne | May 5, 2008 8:14:18 PM
The Bo supporters are so short sighted, only thinking of 30 bucks they could get with the gas taxes. They never understood, especially Bo, that is Obama himself, that the tax reduction will help to stimulate the economy, by reducing the costs of transportation, thereby reducing the costs of your food, groceries, clothing, and everything you purchase. This means you will have more money, not just simply the 30 bucks gas dollars you saved, but much more associated with other people's savings. Therefore, you'd spend more, and the economy will recover sooner.
Either Bo never understood it, which disqualifies him as a pres., or he pretends he does not to deceive people by saying anything to win elections, in which case he should be disqualified by the voters by not giving him a vote.

All the "experts" economists in this country last June, July, August, September 2007 said that the country was not heading toward a recession. Some say we are not in a recession right now and that everything is okay. Why did the "feds" spend billions and billions of our tax dollars to bail out banks and help the stock market then? All of the "experts" said that gas would not climb about $3.00 a gallon last year in September, October and November. Thank you Hillary for trying to bring whatever relief than you can to our country. The "experts" may prefer nothing is done, just more talk and debate, like Obama who is still thinking about how to address his 20 years with his church.

Someone that Did the Math
I did the math too and it would enable me to take a vacation this summer which I have not been able to do for a good long time. It is time for a change in this country but the change will never come from Mr. Obama who is still thinking, thinking and thinking on how to answer questions without answering any questions.
Posted by: Anne | May 5, 2008 8:30:18 PM
At least Hillary is trying to do something about the soaring gas prices. I don't see Obama offering up any ideas.
I want someone who is offering possible solutions.
Posted by: Henry | May 5, 2008 8:33:21 PM
FYI..
there is no quick fix to the high gas prices. we need to start drilling in alaska. should have been setting up shop there 10 years ago.
Posted by: tim | May 5, 2008 8:33:37 PM
HENRY...
im a conservative so im not taking sides between these two, but if you honestly believe the gas holiday is a solution, you need to take a look at what it is. it will save you maybe 40 dollars this summer. maybe. its a political move to make it seem like she cares, its not any where near a real solution.

Tim
Yes it is a band aid, but something to help the people that are hurting right now. Millions are losing their homes to foreclosures and have NO CASH. My sister and her husband have two cars as they commute to work (many Americans are in this same boat). 2 Cars, that fill up once a week at $2.70 savings per fill-up for each car....you do the math they will have about $65.00 more in their pockets than they have right now. What about those that drive trucks that have larger gas tanks....they will have a fortune. It is meant as only a rippling effect to help the down economy and those that are hurting, and there are many. It is not a fix. The fix will have to come by what you say drilling for more oil...however, you know eventually all the oil will be gone...so the real fix seems to be a need for more solar energy on the planet. Sorry if we offend you, but these are the facts.
Posted by: Anne | May 5, 2008 8:47:50 PM
Well then I guess the truckers need to do their homework and stop following someone, aka Hillary, blindly. Sure it sounds good, I guess. But it won't work and more imporantly it will not happen.
Posted by: lisa | May 5, 2008 8:52:04 PM
Hillary's argument is valid because she wants to show that she will do what she can to make the oil companiess flip the bill when they are making record profits. Where's all the outrage against oil company record profits? Oh thats right, some of you just want to hate Hillary. By the way, the Obama supporters were literally discusting audience members at the Jefferson Jackson event.
Posted by: irma | May 5, 2008 8:53:56 PM
see, now that makes a little more sense. if you want to make the case that the gas tax holiday might help the trucking/frieght industry stay alive a few more months, then that makes a little more sense. but to come on here and say "it will let me afford a vacation this summer" or it will "save me 600 dollars in gas this summer" your not being realistic. the average american dosnt consume enough gas for it to be a real solution. and here is the important part: ITS NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM!!! we get fixated on this stuff and we debate just about what they tell us versus actually talking about a real solution. after the summer, we are still screwed. then what shall we do? any good ideas canidates? of course not because you wouldnt want to talk the truth about issues??!! START BY DRILLING IN ALASKA.
Posted by: tim | May 5, 2008 8:56:28 PM
You know that Obama voted for this very tax relief a few years back in Illinois because he studied it and thought it would help. His judgment was wrong then too, I guess. He was positive it was a good thing back then ---why is it different this time? Yes they tried it and it didn't work out like they planned but you know in life we all try things and fail but then we get right back up and try it again, but this time a different way and that is how you succeed in life. You do not succeed by saying let's don't do anything because last time we tried it failed. Why did Obama vote for this very tax break just a few years ago?
Posted by: Anne | May 5, 2008 8:59:00 PM
Doing the math doesn't matter to some people, because they have enough to get them by the crunch times. For working families, two bread winners going to work everyday, chaufering children to school, games and other activities, and those who drive for a living, such as truckers, the stress is much greater. Even to a single person with limited income and living on a tight budget paycheck to paycheck, a little relief could go a long way. Some people have to commute long distances to work everyday. Does it matter? Yes, it certainly matters.
We all know that we need long term solutions for the energy crisis. In bad economic times, does anyone worry about the have nots? At a time when drug companies and oil companies are making huge profits, who is worried about those in poverty or hovering just above it? Not Obama. He just doesn't get it. He thinks everyone hurting, job wise or otherwise, is just bitter. He should understand bitterness while clinging to his bitter church pastor, while others "cling to their religions and guns". I believe it's more than that. People are angry.
Hillary gets it. Obama doesn't.

lets not get carried away here. just by saving you 40 or 50 dollars, dosnt mean hillary gets it.. lol we will see if she "gets it" when its time to FIX the problem instaed of twiddling our thumbs. i could be on the stump right now and say "im for the holiday" so it gets me votes and make the people think she's fighting for us. dont take it for more than its worth. she has been a huge part of sooooo much wasteful spending in her time its sickening, so dont let the 50 dollars get to your heads.
Posted by: tim | May 5, 2008 9:11:13 PM
Brainstorm! A little test--Poll the truck drivers. So many are on the highways these days, wall to wall. Ask them what the tax relief would mean to them. Can they keep their jobs and their livelihood? Is anyone looking out for them? Not Obama.
Posted by: georgia | May 5, 2008 9:14:14 PM
let me just a question, so i can try to make this a little cleare... what do obama and hillary believe we should do after the 4 month "holiday"... you people are too focused on the here and now... what happens to gas prices in september? thats what you should be asking people.

Hi d, Selling one's strengths "Willingness to take on oil companies" and trying to figure out a way to put money in people's pockets in order to get a vote, is not bad or wrong or ineffective. Her plan does not take from the environmental relief efforts. It gets the record making oil companies to pay for the tax relief to consumers. Although, this effort really doesn't mean yea or nay to me because I have already decided. By the way, Obama has done the worst pandering. I went to the early rallies in Nevada and here. He, Michelle and his supporters have suggested that the "change" is based on the opportunity to elect a black man. I am half black too and I was really and seriously turned off by their allusions and insinuations. Especially because they were pandeIring to white liberals who want to "Do the Right Thing." I knew this was a mistake and that it would come back to haunt them in some form. They switched their "change" argument to changing the political, scene shortly after that. However, it was too late because many of us knew that he didn't have much to run on in regards to his accomplishments for society. I support Hillary because of her past work for people, not for how she made it to where she is. Obama's personal accomplishments, from an educated, upper middle class family does not impress upon me his ability to do for others. I do know he speaks of it, but there is no real record of it.
Posted by: irma | May 5, 2008 9:25:49 PM
Small measures with American at the helm can build inoto large measures. I have every confidence in the American public if aroused and working together that we can fix this problem. Yes, Tim you are correct we should be focused on how to bring down the gas prices and the future use of oil in America. I grew up in a family of scientist and there are many answers but because of the many corporations "big businesses" in America like Ford for example producing cars that only get 17-23 mpg when they should have been producing better efficient cars years ago is the problem. Our time has run out---it is time to take action. Hillary has quite a job ahead of her but you know and this is not racist, so please do not take it that way....men have been in office for every, let's try a woman. Woman are best at multi-tasking, ask any woman who takes charge of the children, the home and works too. Woman are more nurturing, and caring and she will see that everyone has health care. What better thing for this country. Obama will still leave 16 million people (maybe more) with no health care because he says he is just making it more affordable....his idea and my idea of more affordable and mine is not the same. Paying some 20% and having the insurance companies pay 80% does not work. Hospital bills are so outrageous even for a few days stay that 20% will bankrupt most middle class people, let alone those with less income. Please vote tomorrow anyone in NC or Indiana and vote for America and health care for everyone. Vote Hillary

I don't what is more pathetic, the fact that HRC is actually standing up for something that will actually end up costing people more money at the pump, or the fact that the unwashed masses are eating it up with a spoon.

Anne, thanks for your interesting info on the kind of change we can believe in. O is now explaining what he meant in looking into the Teamsters issues. Sounds a lot like his explanation for double talk on NAFTA. He cannot think fast enough to explain what he meant. It sounds like "change" in positions to me.
Speaking of "change"....I was wondering if the summer relief could help me afford my daily lattes. How many lattes could I buy with the $30.00 savings some people are expecting from the gas tax relief? Just wondering if I can afford them now.

It wont cost more at the pump unless the Oil companies raise their prices and they wouldnt have the audacity to do that

Emily, that's odd, I made phone calls to NC today also- but 80 % of responses I got eluded to the fact they would never vote for a president who is a proven liar.... funny how those phone calls work.

i think both are trying to win.. its how you go about it that i think is either okay or not.
hillary out right lied to the PEOPLE to the face of her followers! then goes on t.v. and laughs about it?
she has been caught talking about things with out knowing if they are true or knowing they arent.. this gas tax thing is just the latest thing- she isnt even sure if its going to work and its been done before BY obama's state and didnt work.. then she said he doesnt want to do it because he doesnt care about people? no, he tried it - it didnt work why would he or anyone else keep waving it around as a solution?
the thing that i hate the most about clinton is she is a hypocrit to the core! to the core!!! plus she claims all this experience well hate to tell you i live in NY and she yes has done some good but i looked into both records and he has too.. she has also messed up royally alot she has done as senator and first lady ... so why is she talking about he doesnt have the experience she has? she is still messing things up with all her " experience"...

if there were any underlying questions about Bush in 2000 claiming to bring peopel together then Obama should throw up 10 times the warning signals about his past!

You are the one misrepresenting as your candidate does...
Clinton can not pay for the infrastructure budget with any oil company profits... she can't pass that before the fall first (Bush will veto and it doesn't even come close to having enough votes to pass normally never mind with Bush in office)
and it probably won't pass in any case becasue there are lots of problems with this...
bottom line is even if it got passed in a few years...
this summer won't see any moneys coming in to pay for this years debt that we have already seen with infrastructure...
You calling Obama supporters misleading is the same as your candidate...
get her out of this race...get her out of this congress for that matter.
...stop misleading the citizens of this country.

Obamas step father in Indonesia was apparently not a savory character so he probably put him up to it

its not misleading to point out facts that are .. well facts and Obama is being more misleading

I'm a Clinton supporter who believes that Obama would have had a chance had he spent more time in the Senate building a record.
Axelrod's strategy is failing. He thought it would be easier to create a persona, than defend a substantive record. He sure was wrong.
In the absence of a substantive record, people are free to project all sorts of things on him fairly or unfairly.
Let him go back to the Senate and try to earn the voters respect and trust for a future run.

They simply cant pull off anything like that they will be made to accept Hillarys nomination when the time comes!

Obama has had a plan for lowering gas prices. He talks about it at every rally. He's been discussing it for several months. You folks who don't know about his thoughts on increasing fuel efficiency, decreasing our dependence on oil, etc... well, you've been swindled by this country's media. Thank them for your ignorance and then pat yourselves on the back for not researching things on your own. I feel sorry for anyone voting for HRC on the basis of a $28 savings over 3 months. You or your friends and family members will be the ones to suffer from the jobs lost and road maintenance problems. Miss Hillary is the one who's out of touch. She's made more money in the past 8 years than all of her working class supporters combined. You working class folks... you're the ones who will suffer if she or McCain become president. I'm off to sip on my latte and pray for you folks!

Saying you care about all Americans is not as convincing as showing you care by actions. Clinton proves she cares even if the liberal dems and most of the republicans in the Senate are going to shoot down any relief efforts for Americans. $70 over a 3 month period will help those in need buy more food or more medicine that they need. It means nothing to Obama and his elite surrogates but it means a lot to most of us who cant make ends meet because the Bush administration and the economists have caused the devaluation of the dollar and a reduction in average income of $1000 per year for middle America. Clinton is right!

I now understand why republicans do not trust or like Hillary.

thats right they talk about a superdelegate here and there going for Obama but really the ones that count Dean and the 20 member rules committee will see Obama for what his prospects are and Hillary will have the advantage!

We've learned a lot about Obama's supporters.
When the going gets tough, they get offensive and bully everyone else.
