Clinton: No Preference in Status of Puerto Rico
May 25, 2008 12:59 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., visited an evangelical church Sunday morning in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico. Clinton, Saturday night, had said that she thought Puerto Ricans should have the right to vote for the president. “I believe you should have a vote in picking the president, too.”
Today, Clinton said she didn’t care what the outcome was in the discussion over the status of Puerto Rico -– but that it should be resolved.
“All people are entitled to a representative form of government. And all levels of government. The people of Puerto Rico should have the right to determine, by a majority vote, the status you choose from among all the options.
“I have no preference. My only commitment is to work with those from all factions and with the Congress to give you the right to make that decision. I want that done within my first term as president,” Clinton said.
Clinton also stated that if she hadn’t insisted to continue her bid for the presidency, Puerto Rico would never have been in the national spotlight. “If I had listened to those who had been talking over the last several months, we would not be. But I believe this is an opportunity, unlike any in recent history, for the needs and interests and diversity for the people of Puerto Rico to be in the spotlight.
“This is an opportunity to educate everyone about this wonderful place and to have not just our country, but the world learn more about Puerto Rico. So, on June the 1st, you have the chance to vote, not just for me or my opponent, but to vote for yourselves.”
Clinton has many stops through the island on Sunday and through Monday.

Hillary, keep fighting and don't give up. If you are not nominee, then will vote for McCain to punish the democrat party to choose the wrong candidate and not listen to the will of people. We rather choose McCain because he is an honest AND experience candidate. He can keep our country safe.

Hillary is the only hope America has. I don't want her to quit... I want her to keep fighting for us as we continue to fight for her. Love you Hill!

A big bunch of americans are hypocrite, they do not want to display their true faces. They do not want Obama because he is Black, period. Using excuses and explanation coming from nowhere to hide their true faces. Hypocrites. And by the way I am a white Irish in case you are asking yourself.

You are so funny Hillary. Do you think Puerto Ricans have no brain telling them they would never been in the National spotlight, if not you continuing with your Presidency!
Suppose Madam, you could had wrapped it up on Super Tuesday, could be there any thought of you putting them in the National spotlight???????

Go Hillary! The people need you!

Puerto Ricans ask themselves which National spotlight is Clinton talking about. The US or the Puerto Rican spotlight since Puerto Rico is a nation.

I think this is ridiculous. So you're voting for McCain if Hillary loses? Is this what our nation has come to? Give me a break! I can't believe that we're asking for another four years of American torture by having McCain as our president. What in the world does experience have to do with anything? There are experienced philanthropists and experienced murderers. I'm tired of this "experience" mumbo-jumbo. Vote for a president who will help the United States thrive, and help wedge the gap between other nations. McCain as president will only cause more dissention, and if the majority of Americans want to vote for that, then I find that a disgrace. Have any of you seen what Bush has done? McCain will not be any different. Here's my motto: Experience has taken us nowhere.

It's ingenuioius for Clinton to say she wants to make sure that Puerto Ricans have the right to vote in general election for the President but she failed to inform them that it would take a change of the U.S. Constitution to do so (a lengthy proceedure and near impossible pursuit, by-the-way).
She's been in the Senate for 6 years which has given her plenty of time to at least broach the subject which she has spoken passionately about but has not so until this campaign.
I hate to come right out and say it but does, Clinton, think that Puerto Ricans are such a backward people having no internet connection with which to check out the facts? I'm betting that most Puerto Ricans can speak English better than Clinton speaks Spanish and in their wisdom they probably know the language of "pander" pretty well, too.

Someone tell me why the Democrats should
count the popular vote in the
upcoming Puerto Rican Primary when they
are not citizens of this country and
cannot vote in the General Election?
If the DNC wants to apportion the delegates that's ok but to add the popular vote totals to the totals of
legitimate states is unfair and asinine!
Puerto Rico is not a state and their popular votes should Not Count!

I don't understand why Puerto Rico matters in this primary. They are a US territory (NOT a nation as someone stated above) with no vote in the November election, same as all the other US territories (Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, etc.). Who decided to put PR on the election calendar? If they get to vote in this election, then why not give the same privilege to the other territories?!

Hillary, fight if you want to, but quit insulting the intelligence of voters with your incessant pandering. You never gave a damn about Puerto Rico till now. You never gave a damn about the votes in Florida and Michigan till it looked like you needed them. Be proud that you have been a trailblazer, be gracious in defeat, and make all of us women proud, not embarrassed.

It's funny how Hillary's position on Puerto Rico's political status has suddenly changed. Last year, she was working with Luis Fortuno to push a statehood bill for the island. She also supported the infamous "White House" report which completely eliminated the Commonwealth status,an option which is favored by approximately 50% of the island's population. So much for self- determination!

This country doesn't need a lying, vicious, phoney like Hillary Clinton!
Please get her to run as an independent!
She and Obama win split the
Democrat vote and my candidate,
John McCain, will waltz into the
White House! You Clinton supporters
