Clinton, Obama Cordial on Senate Floor
May 13, 2008 1:35 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: No snub on Capitol Hill today. Just before noon on the Senate floor, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., walked purposefully over to party rival New York Senator Hillary Clinton to shake her hand and pat her on the arm. Clinton was in conversation with Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
Senators were voting on a proposal to suspend investment in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve - it passed 97-1 at 12:03.
Just after that vote was called, Obama could be seen talking to West Virginia Democrat and Dean of the Senate Robert Byrd.
He spoke for ten minutes or more with Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. At the same time, Clinton could be seen talking to Michigan's other Democratic senator, Debbie Stabenow.
The Michigan votes, of course, are contested in the Democratic primary; Sen. Obama was not even on the ballot there.
After a final vote, the Senators will go to a party policy lunch with other Democrats. Its unclear if we'll see them more on the Hill today.

Dems will come together to throw the GOP out. Don't have any doubts about that. Continue the war in Iraq?? Continue the tax cuts for the very wealthy?? No freakin' way.

Don't not vote. Don't let your disgust with this race take away your voice. Even if you write in a foolish name--do it.

God Help the Democratic party if Obama is the nominee. They will be losing so many democrats by Nov it won't be funny.
McCain will be elected, if hillary is not on the ballot.

FL and MI should have a revote. Whomever has the most popular votes would be president and second would be vp. That would be a valid winning ticket but instead we are going to have half the democrats mad and out for blood. Thanks Howard for this big fat mess.
Posted by: Tina from Florida | May 13, 2008 2:11:56 PM
How can anyone from Florida or Michigan want the popular vote to be the deciding factor?
The popular vote does not include 14 states that held caucus elections.
Some states hold caucuses to save taxpayers millions of dollars.
Using the popular vote is the same as saying 14 states do not count.

Vote McCain, the only sane vote left to us.
Posted by: justme2see | May 13, 2008 2:25:27 PM
FL and MI have no one but themself to thank for this problem and who knows maybe just maybe had they not moved their primary up we would not be having this long debate anyway. The rules are the rules FL and MI knew that and took it upon themself to try to be in the spot light. Now look what they have caused..... Thing might have been different but here we are THANKS FLORIDA ONCE AGAIN AND NOW MICHIGAN! What a mess yet this is politics in the USA.

Just like Bush with the war, Obama lied to the Democrats at the begining of the campaign hiding his allegiance to Rev. Wright and Black theology. That is the only reason he is ahead in the primaries. After we found out he has not win anything but NC in which obviously there was fraud.. Obama is as deceiving and conniving as Bush. Write Hillary on the ballot.
Posted by: libre | May 13, 2008 2:29:15 PM
A true Democrat won't vote for Obama or MCCain. Write Hillary Clinton on the ballot. she should run independent. This process has been tainted. The media wants to push Obama on us.

Olivia Lee, Ok, I am not a true democrat, I admit it, I am a born-again republican and voting for John McCain!!!
Posted by: justme2see | May 13, 2008 2:32:28 PM
Obama can not win the nomination with just the African American vote and a few High School and freshmen confused kids. He alienated the blue collar vote, the rural vote, the Hispanic vote and the true Democrats vote.
Posted by: libre | May 13, 2008 2:35:58 PM
My sense is that Most of Clinton's supporters are lying and/or bluffing when they say that they will vote for McCain in the fall if(when) Obama is the nominee. They say that to create the "impression" that Clinton is more electable.
Those that really mean it didn't know what being a democrat meant in the first place. However, I chose to believe that Clinton's supporters are smarter than we are led to believe.
Most Clinton supporters WILL NOT VOTE TO OVERTURN Roe V. Wade!!! They will not VOTE FOR MORE YEARS IN IRAQ!!! They will look at their ban accounts and NOT VOTE FOR the same BUSH ECONOMIC Policies that McCain seems to love so much.
Clinton supporters are just sour right now. They are melting down and grasping for that shoestring of hope. That string is breaking thread by thread everyday. But, they will come around in a few months when McCain is exposed for who he is and what he stands for.

I laugh when I read posts like this, just switch parties, why stay at home. True democrats will vote for the democratic nominee whether it's Hillary or Barack. Like, your post is going to sway the masses of Democrats to stay home, Please get real, we have heard the same bull for months.

Tina from Florida, you can't change the rules of the game at this point. Everyone agreed to them (both Clinton and Obama), then your state and Michigan broke them. That's not Obama's fault, that's not Howard Dean's fault. It's not even your fault. But some authority in your state, knowing the pre-determined consequences, broke the rules. I'd be unhappy if I were you, too, but there's no sense in blaming Dean or Obama. Check and see what Clinton said about it back then. Her tune has changed. I'd have no problem with you guys having a new, fair election, but nobody seemed able to work that out. Obama did not stop it, though many pro-Clinton bloggers seem to think so. By the way, the rules state we determine the nominee by delegates, not popular vote. If you want to change that in the future, get involved in the process! Sounds like it could use some changing, and while you're at it, do something about that electoral college, too!

Young voters think this is American Idol. The majority don't have a clue of what any of the candidates are saying or doing.
You think she will lose those states? BHO doesn't have a chance. They didn't vote for him now & they vote for him in November.
Posted by: T | May 13, 2008 2:46:10 PM
Leann he gets 25 to 35% of white workers that are registered Democrats. So to the 70% Democrats that will not vote for him you have to add all others that are Republicans or Independents. We are not lying 4 years of McCain would be the lesser of two evils and then Hillary can come on 2012. Anyway I think we shuld write Hillary's name on the ballot, I am sure she can get more votes tha Obama, and maybe more than McCain.

"True Democrat"? I am a true blue democrat, always have been. But, more importantly, I am a true blue American. And if the Dems are stupid enough to nominate Obama, I WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN. At that time, it will no longer be Dems vs Repubs, but what is important for the country. Obama WILL DESTROY the America I love. I am a true Democrat, but the safety and security of my family , and my country, always come first. Obama , the dangerous liar, will never be my President. So, who do you love more, your party, or your family?

Democrats won't vote for Obama.
Posted by: libre | May 13, 2008 2:53:36 PM
Here's the problem. Hillary supporters are hoping to win the nomination by the popular vote count.
This isn't a "whomever has the popular vote wins" type of game.
It's a delegate game. That's why we have the magic number of 2025. And at this point, it's virtually impossible for Hillary to surpass Obama in the pledge delegate count.
And b/c neither candidate will reach 2025, the democratic nominee will be entirely on whom the SDs chose.
Evidently, it will be Obama... he leads in pledge delegates.

He says that he is a true democrat. If he were, then he would not spread the kind of fear mongering that he is spreading. True democrats do not buy into that nonsense. How is Obama going to destroy the country? Show me one shred of credible evidence in his 12 years of political service to this country where he has even hinted at it. I dare you!!!! You are a GOP troll and is upset that Obama is about to trounce McCain in the fall. Sorry YOU LOSE!!!

Hilliary can't win without blacks, Obama can't win without lowerclass whites, and McCain can't win without younger voters. The democrat party will have to unify to beat the Republicans. Staying at home won't help the high prices of gas, food, education, health, or the IRAQ war. Four more years of McCain/Bush will hurt all Americans tremendously.

I saw this posted on another site and it is the way I feel.
I’ll admit it – I have had it with all the charges of racism. The Obama camp has used this card UP as far as I am concerned. Hillary and Bill Clinton are not racists and neither is everyone who decides not to vote for Barack Obama.
On the other hand, the fact is that we have seen countless egregious examples of sexism over the course of this campaign, every single day for MONTHS. From the stunning lack of outrage about it we must conclude that sexism is perfectly acceptable whereas racism is not. As a woman, I feel that I have been brutally assaulted by the main stream media, by Obama, and by countless Obama supporters – elected officials and folks on the ground - over the course of this campaign. I cannot ever recall any Presidential candidate being slandered to this degree by members of her or his own party OR by the media. I am disgusted and fed up. The treatment of Hillary Clinton has been outrageous and unacceptable. The way I see it, every sexist attack on Hillary is an attack on me too. I am not alone. Many women (and men) who support Hillary are very angry.
As far as I am concerned, the Obama campaign has done nothing to deserve our support, should Obama become the nominee. How many insults are we expected to take and still keep standing there? Me, I’m long gone.
Posted by: Jan | May 13, 2008 3:08:49 PM
I was an Obama supporter till Reverend Wright came out of the closet. Obama is starting to scare me. Especially when Wright did the old wink, wink, nod, nod and admitted Obama just says what he has to, to get elected.

A vote for McCain is a vote for more American lives to be lost.
For every mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, and friend please vote for Obama. We know McCain does not plan to bring our loved ones home.
I'm begging every Democrat to calm down and realize how important it is for the next president to be a Democrat.
Posted by: Dan | May 13, 2008 3:14:29 PM
The democrats are finished. Look at the division and squabbling on this board. We are torn, 50/50, and it appears the far left of our party is prepared to insult the moderates by throwing Hillary under the bus, denying her a place on the ticket, just to spite her and her husband. Trouble is, a lot of people voted for her, a lot of people are going to vote for her today in WV. Even with CNN telling us over and over it's over. Even with 64% of democrats saying she should not quit.
Face it folks, a combined ticket is the only way. Anything less, results in a McCain victory.

Race has hijjacked the Democratic Party. Liberals run the party. See how they would run the country. They cannot control the extremists. Many of the Obama's supporters are way too angry(like nasty mean). I can't see that kind of anger bringing unity. You know when they talk about unity..they are wanting a party to unite..not the entire country. Very sad. Obama and his so called preacher (a racist in my eyes), cannot condition many of us to feel FEEL that he deserves to win to make it up to a race. If this is how he plans to win, the blame and guilt tour will just continue. I would dread to live with that in the WH.
Posted by: Christie | May 13, 2008 3:25:16 PM
Maybe all you Hillary Haters should think about this. Do you realize how many people will vote for McCain because
Obama will be the Democratic nominee or
will not vote at all because Obama is the nominee. Either way we all lose because McCain will be another George Bush, except worse and Obama will be worse than either one of them. With the
state of our economy, gas prices and the war in Iraq I don't think Obama is capable of handling this country.

You accuse me of putting Hillary down, when I was simply trying to make a point. Why don't you scroll up and read the numerous posts on this very blog putting down Obama. Why not address them also in the interest of fairness? I was responding to another poster that said some disparaging things about Obama.
Also, it was your candidate, Clinton that blasted the news with Charges of Obama being Elitist. I was simply pointing out that she was in error and demonstrating that she is very well more of an elitist than Obama could ever be. If she loses this nomination, she will need those many eductated, starbucks going, latte sipping, Prius driving, pander proof elitists that live in New York to keep her Senate Seat. Let us pray that they have short memories.

Hillary is a bully and always has been. These full pout threats by her supporters to move to McCain because they are mad at Obama supporters is a threat, typical of something they would learn from their standard bearer - to bully. Well, I say, cut 'em loose. Obama makes up their loss overnight with the millions he has brought into the process, who are young and eager, who are old and interested in change, and the Obama lock on the black vote easily gets him into the White House.
Posted by: Rita | May 13, 2008 5:40:01 PM
To Rita,
You are right. Obama is in the process of organizing massive unprecedented voter registration drive in all 50 states. he message will be heard loud and clear. He has quadruple the funds that McCain has now. Old John Mac Daddy Cain will not have a prayer come November. Obama is the future and when he is being sworn in on Inauguration day, the Clintonites will be sulking in their own tears. :(

Hillary needs to get out after next Tuesday. She can have West Virginia and Kentucky, but the latest poll out of Oregon shows her down by 20 points. Senator Obama will get a lot of the votes back from Oregon that he loses in WV & KY. It is over for her. She ran a terrible campaign, whined all the time, spent way too much money on things not needed, such as Mark Penn, didn't plan for after Feb. 5th. This is her campaign's fault. They were just "out campaigned" by the Obama team.
Posted by: Carolyn Grace | May 13, 2008 7:21:32 PM

Obama will have enough money to outspend McCain 4-1, 5-1, 10-1, but that won't buy a whole lot of votes. Ask Hillary.

This whole election thing has gotten out of hand really. How can we trust any of these people? How do we know that once there in office that they will actually follow through with what we were promised? There comes a time when you stop and you look at these politicians and say "What the hell are we paying you for?" I mean are they really doing anything at all? Some people would say that I am being an idiot...some would say I really dont know what I am talking about....But...I do know that taxes are too damn high...that the cost of our house hold items and food is becoming outragest....that my University fees have gone up...I know that while they sit on there asses in there big houses and there brand new cars...that the rest of us are busting our butts to survive the week...that I dont have any insurance at all cause I cant afford it...that they dont care that the fuel price has gone up to high that we have to ration everything....that minimum wage is still too little for those trying to survive on it.....can they...will they do anything to help us at all? Or are all there words just that words and nothing more?

Any political party that devises "rules" that cancel out anybody's vote is evil by definition. By sticking to these rules you support this evil. You all created this mess by tolerating these rules. Rules. Rules. Rules. Bah. Why, here's a rope! Do, let's hang ourselves.
I'm not voting in November because the "rules" in place long before I was born deem my vote pre-cancelled out. Such is the superior intelligence of these two parties. Such is the effect of our beloved Electoral College. Carry on however you wish, the rules of these two parties are supreme.
