Clinton Says She Is 'No Shrinking Violet' Amid Cheers for Obama
May 02, 2008 9:59 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper and Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., had to endure cheers for Sen. Barack Obama and boos for the North Carolina governor, who has backed her, at the North Carolina Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Raleigh, N.C., Friday evening -- where both she and Obama spoke.
Toward the end of her speech, Clinton pointed out to the crowd that she thinks she is tough, saying to the crowd, “I am no shrinking violet.”
Clinton, attempting to show that there will be party unity, said, “If Sen. Obama is the nominee, you better believe I'll work my heart out for him.”
The crowd erupted into a chant for Obama, leaving Clinton speechless for a few seconds while she waited for them to finish. During her speech, Clinton also mentioned Gov. Mike Easley, who has endorsed her candidacy, and she was momentarily rendered speechless while the crowd booed him.
In his speech, Obama also preached unity, saying that after the nomination process is over, “This party will come together. If Hillary Clinton were the nominee, I would support her in a heartbeat. And I know that if I am the nominee then she will support me.”
But he again criticized Clinton over her support of a national gas tax holiday, suggesting that Clinton is not being honest with the American people about the real savings they would receive under the proposal she backs along with Sen. John McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.
"For us to suggest that 30 cents a day for three months is real relief, that that's a real energy policy, means that we are not tackling the problem that has to be tackled," Obama said. "We are offering gimmicks. When we are offering the same thing that John McCain is offering on the cheap, that means that we're not presenting a truthful response to the challenges that we face in America.”
Both Democrats also had some words to say about former Sen. John Edwards in his home state.
“Let me say what a great fighter North Carolina and working Americans everywhere have in John Edwards," Clinton said. "John ran with compassion and conviction. And his courageous fight to end poverty is a fight I will see to the finish. I will appoint a cabinet-level position that will be solely and fully devoted to ending poverty as we know it in America. So let¹s take a minute to express our gratitude to your former senator and a great American, John Edwards."
Clinton then pointed out that Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, supports her health-care plan.
“I want to thank Elizabeth Edwards for her passion for ending discrimination by the insurance companies and for standing up against John McCain's inadequate and radical health-care plan," she said. "Elizabeth Edwards is a true champion for universal health care.”
Obama also gave a shout out to the Edwards’ on their home turf.
“I say a special thanks to John and Elizabeth Edwards because they really set the tone for this presidential race with their courage, with their ideas, with their passion and their commitment to working people," Obama said, "and to making sure that we focus our attention on not just the 'haves,' not even the 'have littles and want mores,' but the 'have nots' in America.”
Obama said he is grateful for the Edwards' contributions and looks forward to working with them in the next administration.

I belive in the Constitution.
I believe in honesty.
I believe our government is full of vile self indulgent individuals.
I believe our time is now.
I belive our future is in OUR OWN HANDS.
I believe HRC and McCain are part of the past.
I believe anything is possible.
I believe that my fellow humans are capable of seeing and believing what is obvious.

Thinking, I'm glad you got my point. After Obama supporters have called for Hillary to get out of the race continually, called her all kinds of unflattering names, then they can be totally disrespectful and boo her and the Governor at a Democratic Party dinner in Raleigh, what should we think? That the Obama people own the Party? That this is not a campaign where all voices can be heard with respect? Some people need to grow up. I am glad that you voted Obama, because I didn't, and I won't in November. Enjoy your moment while you can!

george, people do read more than one paragraph...as we are voting for our future leader of the USA. it is beholding to us all as we persue our choice. after all, freedom in all categories is what this election is all about. i am intrigued by these posts and respect all views of the bloggers. i may not agree with them, i may spar with them, but i respect them.
hillary is the candidate that represents the middle class blue collar worker. i want her to win as a lot of us do.....the indy star said today, 'she has a clear-eyed focus on the issues in this country.' and they are right...she does. when will obama spar with o'rielly on fox and show the country he can take on a right wing idiot like hillary did.....she did it with ease, and o'rielly respects and admires her for her class. talk about reaching across party lines.

When the polls drop, bring on the race-baiting, name calling, and ad hominine attacks on Hillary, and her supporters.
@ lisa: The "disruptions," as you call them, have been encouraged by the Obama camp from day one. These disruptions are discourteous, mean-spirited, and downright rude. They are also not representative of the democratic party or anyone with dignity.

She needs to shrink and go away.

Emily - Much like the words "disruption" and distraction" have been used by political candidates...so have the words "hope" and "change". Meanwhile, we have the Revvy Wright, Tony Ayers, Mr. Auchi, cousin Odinga, and many others. Your candidate is a liar.

also, i would like to comment, does everyone remember when hillary was the front runner for so long.....and the attack ads were all against her, and everyone was looking for every little thing, past, present and future wrong so they could media blast her? maybe now obama knows how hillary feels and understands what she went through for so long.

Some sure are reaching for bloodlines and affiliations to discredit Obama.
The Clinton past is rather deep, and quite frankly, unresolved. The MSM won't touch it *yet*. They are saving up for mainstream media ratings, shall we go there now and give them a head start?
Don't assume your HRC is resilient. you can't even understand media- and give HRC and her husband more credit then they deserve.
Kinda like buying a Hummer- you might think you look cool, but most of us just think you are a fool.

bud, like being with the rev. wright for 20 years was 'cool' but now a 'fool.'
Posted by: carlasue | May 2, 2008 11:26:44 PM
Erin - When did I discuss race? I was talking about relationships between countries in our world. Your candidate supported his cousin who wants to make Kenya subject to Muslim law.

If clinton, the inevitable candidate, was leading with a unsurpassable pledge delegate, a highly probable unpassable lead in popular vote, double the number of states won, and obama was in her position, there would be the LOUDEST CRY of contempt against obama. i believe Dean, Gore, the Clintons, all three branches of government, FOX, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, LIFETIME CHANNEL, ESPN, NICK, DISNEY AND everyone else would be demanding he concede.
But since its Hillary, hey we need to let the people voices be heard.... obama need more vetting (more like witch hunting). She been moving the goal post all over the field.. first there was popular vote, then there was big states, then there was electoral states, then there just now electability..... when will it end....
let the double standards continue

the woman is fearless! while obama will not even debate her. way to go hillary bet they expected you to go into a fetal position like obama after the abc debate.

DcVoter-
I am capable of reasonable debates. I won't even use insults as points. What shall we debate in front of our fine audience? We can address this one question at a time, or numerous, the choice is yours. I am an intelligent Independent voter for Obama, so I welcome your response.

Obama has such a boatload of dirty friends……drip…drip if that boat springs a leak…watch out. Look at Rezko on trial right now. Rezko, as a real estate magnate in Chicago, was given a contract for 3 energy plants to be built in Iraq…. through our government. The plants were never built because Rezko got indicted, but NO DOUBT that Senator Obama helped Rezko GET that contract for Rezko. Not to mention that Axelrod was a lobbyist for Exelon (and the later nuclear legislation with no teeth), or that much of the $$$ loans came through General Electric Financial. Who have been large contributors to Obama’s campaigns, General Electric and Exelon! Who owns one of the largest loan insurance and credit card companies in America, General Electric. Who voted for unlimited credit limits and voted against a 30% cap on credit cards? Obama! Obama said he voted against the 30% cap because it was too high. Apparently NO cap is better than a cap that’s too high. Who owns NBC and MSNBC the home of all anti-Hillary all the time? General Electric! Who owns Chris Matthews, Tim Russert, Keith Olbermann and Andrea Mitchell? General Electric! Do you think Obama made a speech against the war in Iraq because of his own personal ideology? Which company is doing business in Iran right now? General Electric! No wonder Obama wants to sit down with Ahmedinajad. Why are the Obamanations booing Hillary? They should be booing their liberal fascist leader!

DCVoter, Even Rev. Wright said that Obama was a politician, while he (Wright) was a pastor. He said that Obama would say what he needed to say because he was a "politician". Wright said that he as a pastor answers to God. I probably fall in with the 58%, however, let us "think" a little harder. Perhaps, they planned this whole charade. Wright would make a speech at the National Press Club and respeak his hate rantings. Then, Obama could have a speech for the national media to "act" like he was outraged and denounce Wright. Then, the media and the voters will see that the slate is wiped clean--no more talk about Wright--no more awful baggage for Obama. Did they both "wink" as they played their parts to perfection? Great "thinking" on your part, DC, and mine, too!

Wow- the mainstream media fed posts are abundant here, kinda scary. Does anyone posting on this site do their *OWN* research?
Guess that's toomuch to ask of folks in the information age-
ROFL........

When Jesse Jackson ran in 1988 all the way to the convention supposedly promoting a party split along racial lines, no one asked him to step out of the race. In fact, he was heralded for his effort. No one has ever asked any candidate to withdraw from a race in the history of the party. Dean sets a dangerous precedent that could lead to a party split by stating one of the candidates should withdraw in June. Any voter who suggests Clinton should withdraw exhibits misogynistic behavior and bias against the only viable female presidential candidate in history. Leahy and Dean have both published anti-Clinton statements prior to this race for the nomination. The bias of the leadership in the DNC is clear. It is up to the voters to rebut their efforts as true Americans and supporters of democratic processes.

omentum, can you please explain to me and 90 % of the rest of these people on this blog, and if fact across america, why obama should be president? how can you convince me and so many others by one sitting in a pew for 20 years and being brainwashed is suddenly unwelcome, or denounced. what do you think of the wright's comment....he is doing what politicians do.....what do you think of rattso.....what do you think of ayers....what do you think of the nbpp.......above all else, what do you think of obama subjecting his children to these kind of 'hate' sermons for so long.....well???
Posted by: carlasue | May 2, 2008 11:38:44 PM
bud, obama's hate cult is REALLY a part of the past.....we do not need racism in the WH
