Clinton Sharpens Attacks; Drives a New Message

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., sharpened her attacks on her opponent three days before the critical primaries on Tuesday. Clinton offered a new message: "Headlines and Trend Lines" -– a slogan she has used before, but really hammered on Saturday in Wake Forrest, N.C.

In her sharpest remarks in days, Clinton said she is better on the housing crisis, health care and on the gas problem than Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Clinton addressed the gas tax issue saying, “There’s a big disagreement in this campaign. You’ll see it in the headlines about where Sen. Obama and I stand on taking on the immediate crisis we confront.

“You’ve probably heard the debate about the gas tax, because my opponent is running ads and holding press conferences attacking my plan to try to give you some kind of break this summer.” Clinton explained her plan and why it was better, hitting on the gas tax holiday and other solutions she has proposed.

Clinton also pointed out the difference between her policy on housing versus Obama’s. “When I said we needed to take action to freeze foreclosures to protect people from losing their homes my opponent disagreed.”

Clinton then turned to her health care jab, one she has pointed out from state to state. “My opponent's plan would leave out 15 million people. That’s not really going to work. Because what that means is the uninsured will still go to the emergency room.”

Clinton closed, saying, “I think if you are a leader, you have got to look at both the headlines and the trend lines. ... This issue that we are facing today over gas prices, and the debate that my opponent and I are having over it, is really part of a larger difference between us. It’s something I hope you will think about when you go to vote -– either voting early today or voting next Tuesday.”

It is worth noting that the primary in NC and IN and ultimately the election hinge on a bet by two of the candidates that low information voters will believe their preposterous assertions that a "gas tax holiday" will help them pay their fuel bills this summer.
Anyone with a high school level education in economics will tell you a gas tax holiday will actually have the effect of raising gasoline prices. The consumer will simply never see a dime and the oil companies will make even higher profits. Not to mention the fact that it might put as many as 300.000 people out of work when the country is reeling from job losses or drive our debt even higher.

It is simply impossible to even suggest that such a measure could be introduced much less pass through congress before the end of the summer given nobody but McCain and Clinton support it in congress.

We are witnessing an epic and historic clash of old and new politics, one rooted in pander and deception of the past and one with the promise of truth and transparency.

Can I just say that it's nice to see the debate go back to real issues instead of the nonsense on Rev. Wright and the flag pin?

Go Girl!
Even if Hillary endoses Obama , her supprters won't follow and won't vote for him in November!

The only people who will benefit from the Gas Holiday, will be the oil companies.

Hillary you are totally a polarizing figure. Super Delegates are not going to jeopardize the future of the Party. Get it really!

She's better talking about the gas tax. If she was serious she would be sponsoring a bill.

She won't though because it would fail and she would then be seen as ineffective. Its so much easier to just talk about what you could do and not really mean it,like people from Washington like to do.

Obama is out of touch with normal people. We need every penny from overpaid taxes. Go for Hillary!

Well you should check out Obama's "Oregon Plan" because it includes the "great lakes" in the plan. That's Obama for you, if he can't copy or plagiarize Hillary, he'll have to call it pandering because Evilrod didn't think of it first.

Obama is not only a polorized person, but also a divisive force among democratic party.

Rose NC - i'll quote you "Even if Hillary endoses Obama , her supprters won't follow and won't vote for him in November!"

What does this say about Hillary as a leader leading people if she can't even lead her own supporters to unite? Hmmm. You didn't just pay her a compliment you insulted her.

If Obama said he would tax the air we breathe his supporters would say it's a good idea. I guess if you can tolerate his bigotry, the rest is a piece of cake.

Posted by: beo | May 3, 2008 2:55:54 PM

You're right. Even if Hillary asks her supporters to support Obama in the fall, many will not. There is a limit on how much I can swallow in the name of party unity.

I used to think that Clinton would be OK, but then I saw her tactics, and realized she is not much different from G.W. Bush. Both would do anything to win and are motivated by self-centered greed. The only difference is Hillary has a few more IQ points.

Yes, I hope Obama survives the storm of lies and exaggerations that she is stirring up. A new negative ad every day. He has been very good about staying on message, maybe too good, and perhaps he should do some more aggressive attacking himself, since that seems to be the only thing that works with the generally ignorant American public. People want a sound byte, not a whole story; they want a headline, not the actual details. Sad country we live in. That's how Bush got elected, twice, as pathetic as he is. He & the Cheney machine played on people's fears and lied and exaggerated about their opponent. Nice... here we go again.

Hillary is the difference between a leader and a follower!! She proposes and Obama disposes!! She is always one step ahead of Obama and the voters are starting to notice that she is the only one who can defeat McCain this fall!! Hillary is on the rise and Obama is fallling things are breaking her way and she will come close in NC and win by 10 in In!! In the end she will have the popular vote and southern superdelegates will vote as a bloc and insist on Hillary because they do not want to run with Obama at the top of the ticket!!

Rise Hillary Rise!!! Getter Done!!!

As long as Obama doens't end up in the Whitehouse I don't care who wins.

Posted by: Mark | May 3, 2008 3:02:39 PM

I wonder what has she been doing in the US Senate before these three major issues happened (health care, gas price, housing). Surely, all these have a root cause - money! Our dollar is sinking because of Clinton's NAFTA idea, Bush's War on "Occupation". Oil conglomerate cronism. As long as any candidate advocates & supports these three main causes, He or she should not be our next president because they will bring our Nation down and suffer.

Emily - I actually have to admit that the choice between Obama and Clinton when I was voting was the hardest I ever made. Go Dems!!!

Posted by: jmengate | May 3, 2008 3:09:10 PM

I dont understand y is this 'sharpened her attack' when she is trying to differntiate between herself n her opponent? In case of Obama the news would have been drawing attention to real issues. As an outsider i find it amazing how the media at large has lost its sense of impartiality.

Everyone keep in mind when a comment is made that is especially derogatory toward Clinton or Obama supporters, it is probably a diehard Republican trying to encourage disrespect.
On this article, for Clinton to say her plans are better, without experts' agreement, it is just bragging without backup. The gas tax plan is just silly, how can 18 cents make a difference, especially when the oil companies can hike it up another 18 cents in retaliation or a whole dollar or as high as they want without breaking any laws. Look at the profits they are getting away with now, while receiving tax subsidies. Clinton's housing plan has been criticized by experts as extending the housing problem. Anyway, let's face it, by the time a new president is in, writes up legislation and passes it, most of the people prone to foreclosure will have lost their homes. So she can claim her plan is the best to look good but any plan that waits until next year is too late. Congress should be doing something now. Her health care bill has a big problem. She keeps claiming her plan will be mandatory but affordable. Who will set this price? Who will determine what is affordable? I fear all the millions the health insurance companies have given her campaign will influence things in their favor. Why else would they be banking on her? How could their money not be buying influence? It is just like big oil, etc. bankrolling Bush's campaign and then reaping the benefits.
Obama is the only candidate who isn't taking corporate money, so he really can change the way Washington is controlled by the corporate interests now.
