Clinton Sits Through Sermon About Adultery

May 18, 2008 12:42 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: When things couldn't be looking worse for Sen. Hillary Clinton's bid for the presidency in 2008, as her rival Barack Obama closes in on gaining enough delegates to secure the nomination, the former first lady attended a church service in Bowling Green, Ky., Sunday featuring a sermon about lust and adultery.

The hour-long sermon focused on the sin of committing adultery - as outlined in Mathew 5:27-32.

Clinton, D-N.Y., has often said her faith pulled her through the difficult time when her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Paul Fryman of the State Street United Methodist Church asked the congregation, "How is your commitment level in your marriage this morning?’

He spoke about lust and the sin of cheating on your partner. Clinton looked straight ahead as the man spoke about the theme of the sermon, which was: "Come Up Higher When the Devil Whispers Over Your Shoulder."

Clinton sang and participated in the service –- and afterwards shook hands with many well-wishers and community members.

Can anyone say "uncomfortable" Hey, where was Bill?

Posted by: Think | May 18, 2008 12:57:39 PM

I am an Obama supporter Eloise, however all I have to say to your news story is so what. You might want to focus on something else the bible has to say. To paraphrase, "speak only about those things that lift others up."

WoW

I've always wondered why she stayed with him.

Political Reasoning?

I doubt Monica Lewinsky was the first women and probably not the last.

She should have left him. He lied to her and lied to the American people.

Hillary is such a role model (sarcasm)

Posted by: Vanessa | May 18, 2008 1:00:13 PM

Sooooo!

Posted by: Male Chauvenist | May 18, 2008 1:02:13 PM

It is about time someone reminded her that Bill Clinton abused her all these years.

She has been in denial all her life. She could have left Bill but he promised to make her the President of the United States. How ironic that he ended up costing her the nomination.

She should end her campaign on Tuesday and think bout herself.

The question that comes to my mind is..If Hillary let(s) her husband repeatedly cheat on her, will she let others do the same to this country? If she will tolerate serial adultery, then WHAT WON'T SHE TOLERATE?

Posted by: Kris in AL | May 18, 2008 1:08:07 PM

I don't get it. Hillary didn't commit adultery. Why should she feel chastened?

Posted by: JR | May 18, 2008 1:10:01 PM

I am a Hillary supporter and have been in her shoes and who is to say how she felt. I have nothing more to say about this except is this all you can find to write on.

Posted by: Bishop | May 18, 2008 1:11:53 PM

And why is it that so many act like Bill Clinton is the only man to ever commit adultery and Hillary is the only woman who ever forgave her husband. At least Bill went after a grown woman not a young boy like so many republicans.

Posted by: JR | May 18, 2008 1:13:39 PM

Now that the press is satisfied that Obama is all but officially announced the nominee, I guess they are pretty bored on what to report. This story totally has no interest to anyone at all. Good for Hillary for going to church, even when it is uncomfortable. Where is Obama attending lately?

Posted by: dwc | May 18, 2008 1:15:07 PM

OK, this is a stupid topic, just another one of ABC's bias against Hillary, picking at every little insignificant thing, while Obama makes huge gaffes and you don't say anything. I'm even more shocked at some of the responses, like Kris in AL who says that this is somehow related to how she will be president. Kris askes "what won't she tolerate"??? So , Kris, if you're going to make that dumb analogy, then try explaining how Obama can sit through 20 years of racist sermons, including his wife giving one of those sermons, and not realize it? So, if he was clueless for 20 years, WHAT ELSE WILL HE BE CLUELESS IN???? get real, will ya?

Posted by: doublstandard | May 18, 2008 1:15:26 PM

So, Bill Clinton was an adulter and lie about it like most men do unfortunately. Now we are nominating a former drug addict that used cocaine and was a big pot head and nicely wrote about it in his book; how much do we know about Obama? I wonder what the Obama cult follower would say about it?
I can see their answer, since was Obama is all good, Obama is perfect to their blind eyes

Posted by: Mary_Chgo | May 18, 2008 1:16:50 PM

Though I don't know Kis in AL, I agree with Kris--she didn't commit adultery so why should she feel chastened.

Posted by: Jan Phillips | May 18, 2008 1:17:09 PM

Didn't Hillary also have an affair with Vince Foster? Personally, I don't think Hillary puts out. That's why Bill was always chasing these fat women to play with.

Posted by: Johnny B. Good | May 18, 2008 1:17:13 PM

Just goes to show how tough this lady is when she has the courage to sit there and listen to discussions on subjects that are clearly uncomfortable for her.

Obama just sends his little fliers through the mail to discuss religion (and people are just supposed to take his word for it), rather than face actual questions from voters in Kentucky on the subject head-on...

But then again that's how he treats all subjects that do not appeal to him.

Posted by: SandyB | May 18, 2008 1:18:34 PM

Why reporter always repeat Monica Lewinsky story? Hillary tries to forget and look forward. She has a faith in God that why she forgave Bill.
It is very annoying when reporter brings back this issue. Most of american wants to improve our economy and iraq war.

Posted by: Laura | May 18, 2008 1:27:49 PM

Oh...my...God.... this is pathetic. Talk about double standard. I'm embarrassed for you.

What is the reporter trying to tell us here? Tell me, because I can't figure it out.

I could use an equally snarky article on Obama sitting through 20 of racist, anti-American rants. At least THAT has something to do with this election.

Posted by: Seatac | May 18, 2008 1:28:24 PM

So?

Posted by: Joan | May 18, 2008 1:29:09 PM

You know, if Clinton would just do the right thing and stop her doomed campaign she could avoid awkward moments like this. And actually start to help the Democrats as a whole reclaim the White House.

Posted by: Randy | May 18, 2008 1:30:18 PM

This story is not journalism... it is trash. How sad!

Posted by: CNL | May 18, 2008 1:30:22 PM

At least she's in church. Were you? It's easy to be judgemental.

I hope ABC has the Michelle Obama tape about "Whitey". Are you investigating that? Could be worth 1 million dollars.

Posted by: Juanita Stewart | May 18, 2008 1:31:19 PM

I am an ardent Obama supporter but as for this story, I'm amazed at the comments that seem to blame Hillary for Bill's marital "indiscretions". To suggest that she should have left him or worse yet, killed him because of the Monica Lewinsky affair (and any other trysts he may have had) suggests either an amazingly shallow opinion of marriage or an overblown view of the importance of sex. In either case, I say "grow up".

Posted by: rtw | May 18, 2008 1:31:57 PM

He was talking about the sin of adultry. Why is that controversial?

Posted by: Joan | May 18, 2008 1:32:22 PM

Adultery is a theme older than the Bible and a very common topic. It is very much not unique to the Clinton relationship. What is signficant is that Hillary appears in the latest polls to be padding her huge lead in Kentucky and closing sharply on Obama in his "locked down" Oregon territory.
Could be yet another huge Hillary comeback this Tuesday.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 18, 2008 1:32:42 PM

Hold on...

Bill was an adulterer... and Hillary was a passive victim?

Maybe not.

Recall that Hillary was a world-class enabler for Bill's moral and ethical lapses. She designed the "nuts-or-sluts" defense for all the female targets of Bill's addiction.

So sitting through a sermon on adultery is a problem on two levels. First, it raises Hillary complicity in the Clinton moral equation.

Second, it questions her judgement in thinking that merely attending a church service absolves her of her past "sins".

Perhaps the greater sin is that of ambition at any ethical cost.

Whoops. There they go again.

Kris in AL:

To answer your question:

This is exactly what makes Hillary the most qualified person for the job, because she would know how to separate what has transpired in her personal life from her PROFESSIONAL life.

In my opinion, what she had to tolerate from her husband in the interest of family unity in her PERSONAL life, would make her LESS likely to tolerate it in any other situationin her PROFESSIONAL life......

Posted by: SandyB | May 18, 2008 1:34:02 PM

This is BS at it's absolute worst. Is this somehow a parallel with Rev. Wright? Is it supposed to show that Clinton is a hypocrite? All it really shows is that ABC is nothing but a tabloid. Jounalism? Not even close. Next they'll be folowing her to the grocery store and reporting that she passed by the cigarette counter and didn't protest big tabacco.

Posted by: druggstohr | May 18, 2008 1:34:07 PM

Thank you Eloise Harper! It's about time that a woman journalist has had the integrity and guts to write about the most obvious of Clinton liabilities. We must be reminded of both Bill's awful damage he did to our country and the Democratic party, and Hillary's bizarre avoidance of it and crass attitude toward it for her own political purposes. Women in fact need to be reminded right now how Hillary totally disregarded the dignity of Bill's women,(remember "Bimbo Eruptions -- her term),in defending him in order to keep power. Hillary Clinton stands for no woman but herself.

Posted by: bob10001 | May 18, 2008 1:34:08 PM

Wow, you've got some serious issues! Probably a history of emotional and/or physical abuse of women, too.

"It's about time a woman journalist has had integrity and guts to write about the most obvious of Clinton liabilities." WTF? Just what planet does this loser live on?

Posted by: SarahNJ | May 18, 2008 1:40:45 PM

How strange that the sermons that Obama heard for 20 years didn't make him uncomfortable.

Listen my ex cheated on me about when Bill cheated on Hillary....my ex cheated with his personal trainer....no one in my life brings this up constantly...and I have no trouble going to the gym.

Would it be news if Obama had been sitting through a sermon about loyalty to personal friends or following the teachings of your church (like anti white Black separtism)

When is the MSM going to get tired of attacking Hillary with her husband's infidelity?

When are you going to tell the story of Alice Palmer?

Posted by: Jackie | May 18, 2008 1:41:19 PM

Eloise has had her daggers out for Hillary every since this race began. She tries to compete subtly with the venomous Ann Coulter in negativity, but the reader gets it. I don't think I have ever read as much bias as comes out of her keyboard!

Posted by: Two-cats | May 18, 2008 1:41:56 PM

Bill's personal behavior was certainly not admirable but as GOP Rep. Chris Shays said : "If we held the members of Congress up to this same standard we would lose two-thirds of them." I admire Hillary for hanging in and working it through (for Chelsea) and her family instead of packing it in. Stop and think about the upheaval that might have been created also for the country if Hillary didn't hold it together at that time.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 18, 2008 1:42:36 PM

Talking about adultery, the story doing the rounds on various websites the last couple of days is about Obama having his own Monica Lewinsky -or should I say Marvin Lewinsky? - moment in the back of a limo a while back.
If the Republicans get traction on this one, the election is over. Period.
Let that campaign supporter, whose candidate is without baggage, cast the first stone.

How interesting everyone knows what Bill and Hillary Clinton think. We must have a nation of psychics!! They aren't the first and will not be the last for one or both partners to have a relationship outside the marriage. But they are public figures so everyone seems to think they are entitled to the business of their private lives. Either you are all too young or too forgetful to remember John F. Kennedy who was one the biggest womanizers but yet still revered as a great president. Hillary just can’t seem to win either way. I’m sure the fact she is a woman has nothing to do with it?? Our genitals have little to do with leadership and what is required to become a great president. Monogamy is the great American myth. Time to grow up America.

Just another indication of the stumblebum campaign being managed by the Beast. Anyone think that Bush would have allowed his advance team to place him into an embarrassing venue in which he wasn't sure on the tenor of the speech? Herself is so wrapped up in herself that she can't even function. A hildebeast Presidency would be a nightmare. The only certain results of her term is that she would get richer and bubba would get a lot of young tang!

Posted by: DB Cooper | May 18, 2008 1:54:40 PM

Posted by: David | May 18, 2008 2:03:18 PM

Hillary wants to look forward only when it suits her. Regarding everyone else she wants to know every aspect of their history. Rememer Barack's kindergarten papers????? Hillary wants to fight for millions and millions of citizens, yet didn't fight for her husband or marriage. She accepted the humiliation to become Prez---she suffered over two decades of indignity for nothing!

Posted by: atlantaval | May 18, 2008 2:04:36 PM

Whatever happened be it adultery or you name it, it was between the three of them, i.e., Bill, Hillary, Monica. Their marital problems, or not, is their, Bill and Hillary's, business and no one else. My neighbor's have affairs as do my friends and as far as I'm concerned it's on them, not me. As long as they don't involve me in their excuses to be away for their affairs, I really don't care what they do or with whom.

Posted by: Lawrence | May 18, 2008 2:06:29 PM

If Hillary is a church goer this isn't the first time she sat through a sermon about adultery. Hillary is not the only strong woman out there and she is not the first person to hold on to someone who cheated. It is unfortunate how ignorant and hate filled some of these bloggers seem to be. You put out false information on the internet about the candidates. Some of you are so racist it is appalling! American has a lot to do to clean itself up! We are a disgrace to other countries. We are so busy trying to tell others how to live but look at the hate displayed in these blogs. God Help America!

You want to talk about church. I would guess that many of you writing comments go to church and have no problem spewing hate as soon as you leave the church. Then again many of you probably don't know what church is all about. I'll say this, the Lord has control over this election and everything else. If its Senator's Obama's time to be president, he will be president and hating on him won't change a thing! If it's Hillary's time then Hillary will be president. So Stop the Hating!

Posted by: Shay Jackson | May 18, 2008 2:08:26 PM

Posted by: andrea | May 18, 2008 2:18:10 PM

Why are people trying to turn this on Obama? He didn't write the story and he didn't preach the sermon! I personally think it is a ridiculous story to write and that the minister should have picked another subject, especially since I'm sure he knew in advance that HRC was coming to his church--that would have been the kind thing to do. Get mad at the right people and stop throwing mud at Obama when he didn't do anything to deserve it!

Posted by: TJ | May 18, 2008 2:25:35 PM

Why do people mention only the Monica affair? Bill Clinton has had many, affairs. It's a little stupid to blame a 22 year-old. She was just one of many.

Posted by: CC | May 18, 2008 2:26:57 PM

King David committed adultery.

Yet, many Jews look upon King David as one of their greatest kings.

Of course, adultery is a sin, but it is not a sin to be a victim of an unfaithful spouse.

Although this article was obviously meant to give negative press coverage to Hillary, I respect Hillary for her grace under pressure, but I look down on ABC for engaging in this veiled negative political attack.

Posted by: USmarine0331 | May 18, 2008 2:30:00 PM

The topic of Rev. Fryman's sermon is just as irrelevant to Hillary's campaign as the topic of Rev. Wright's sermon is to Barack's campaign. Neither candidate is responsible for what his or her minister happens to preach. I care more about what the CANDIDATES say, and the media are not spending enough time reporting their positions.

Posted by: lshobbs57 | May 18, 2008 2:37:58 PM

You guys just don't really get it do you? It is really frightening to see what a woman be with such strength and intelligent. Why can't you accept the fact that Hillary Rodham Clinton represents the women of the future. That one day women will really gain the understanding of what a man is and what it takes to keep a family together. Hillary and other intellectual women have understood this but what Hillary had done is let the world knows that she understood. I commend Hillary Rodham Clinton for what she represents and whole heartedly support her for the precedential candidacy. I just hope it won’t be too late for other women to wake up, educated themselves in our history in women suffrage era and vote for Hillary. I really hope that women would understand that we as women were an after thought to a man. Our ancestral had fought, negotiated, manipulated and begged to all the rights that we have now. But it’s still not enough, we work side by side with men and do the same exact job but still get paid less. Think about it, who would be the most effected representative when it comes to women issue?

Posted by: mzmare68 | May 18, 2008 2:38:37 PM

I think the issue that concerns me the most is Michelle Obama's comment about "being proud of America for the first time." I don't care how she now tries to spin it, IT IS DISTURBING. I'm not concerned about Hillary's husband's sex life, I'm concerned about what the candidates REALLY BELIEVE ABOUT AMERICA.

If Michelle (really I mean Barak) isn't very proud of the modern United States, then his black liberation IMMERSION may be a real threat to the vast majority of all the voters including Democrats.

Posted by: Skeptical about Obama | May 18, 2008 2:47:08 PM

Shame on you Eloise. Why don't you investigate Michelle Obama's rantings on "Whitey" at Trinity Church. The republicans are getting ready for the October surprise with this so called videotape and all you have time for,is Bill's adultery. Sen. Clinton did what many women and God have done. Forgive. So let's start doing what Journalist do best Investigate. Get to the bottom of this rumor, before we Democrats lose the election.

Posted by: fishingforthetruth | May 18, 2008 2:49:07 PM

My sense of it that, alone in a room with no advisors or secret service, Hillary kicks Bill's butt, and probably has throughout their marriage. It's part of what makes her a skilled manager. You think keeping her marriage together is easy? Let's try the Joint Chiefs, Congress and the Supreme Court. That's what its going to be like for Senator Obama.

Ok so bill slept around, according to several WH aids and secret service agents that were there when the Clintons were in the WH, he wasn't the only one, she had several quiet affairs of her own, the majority of those were with other women. Seems to me that sermon was right on point, she is no more faithful in that marriage than he is.

kennedydc, None of the candidates have experience like Hillary's. She knows what it is like in the White House, she has been an advisor to a sitting president... she has been there and done that. This is valuable experience and you can discount it all you want but the Obama and McCain experience claims simply don't come close!

Posted by: Two-cats | May 18, 2008 2:57:30 PM

our beloved john f kennedy was quite the womanizer himself. i wonder why did anybody ask jackie o why she stayed with him or insult caroline and ask her in public about her daddy. many articles have been written about Martin Luther King's escapades. 8 past presidents are reputed to have had illicit affairs while married. including thomas jefferson, warren harding, f.d.r and according to sources jefferson fathered a child of a slave. the truth is that back then these affairs were treated more like romance novels than sex scandals so this is not new. bill clintons sex scandal went global due to the internet (and the republicans hatered toward him) not due to its uniqueness.

You know I'm an ardent Obama supporter but I have to say this is seriously tacky as a story for ABC to report on.

This is like National Enquirer or TMZ type of reporting. The story is she went to church. Maybe the sermon is relevant if she or her campaign requested the subject (which I highly doubt) but I think ABC is just sensationalizing the story to up hits on their website or embarass Sen. Clinton. Either reason is hardly first-class journalism.

I am sure that this minister was informed that Sen. Clinton would attend his church. If that was his planned sermon he should have changed it, how cruel and insensitive. Christian behavior ? I don't think so. However it does continue to illustrate how strong Hillary Clinton is. It appears to me that most of the people making the negative comments about the Clintons staying together site Christianity. Forgiveness is one of the main tenets of the faith.

This story is nothing but junk. Hillary didn't commit adultry. There are more important news stories such Obama and Rev Wright.

It is good Hillary attended church if Rev Wright didn't give the sermon.

well ... what is ABC trying to do? ... upstage the National Enquirer? ... this is an ugly news story ... I am sure the sermon had nothing to do with Hillary ... and sermons are prepared for individuals but for the entire audience.
... this is really more of a negative for ABC then it is for Hillary!

And the real issue is: Hillary didn't have an affair in the White House, she didn't have time because she was working on health care. Bill might have fooled around a little.
