Clinton Strategists to Media: We're Not Walking Off The Court

ABC News' David Chalian Reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton's two top strategists attended a breakfast with political reporters in Washington this morning to make the case for her continued candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"We are not oblivious to the environment in which we are operating," said strategist Geoff Garin.

He went on to compare the contest to a tennis match -- of course, a best of five set men's tennis match.

"If someone was down a few games in the third set, I think you would be disappointed if the person walked off the court," Garin said.

"And sometimes even when people are down two sets to love and down a couple of games in the third set, they end up winning by the fifth set," he added.

Communications Director Howard Wolfson and Garin made a two-fold electability argument they hope the remaining uncommitted superdelegates will find compelling enough for Sen. Clinton to win their support and upend the nomination race.

The campaign looked at all the most recent general election match-up polls in the 50 states and claimed Clinton leads Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., by 42 electoral votes compared to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., trailing McCain by 8 electoral votes.

They also cited Florida, Ohio, and Missouri as the key differences that tipped the map to Sen. Clinton's favor.

The other argument put forth by the struggling Clinton campaign Friday was an attempt to paint her as the stronger candidate for critical down ballot races.

They offered a power point presentation looking at 20 competitive House districts currently held by freshmen Democrats that also went for President George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election.

Of those 20 districts, Clinton has defeated Obama in 16 of them during the course of the nomination battle and Obama has been victorious in four of them.

Eleven of those 20 members have yet to endorse in the Democratic presidential race. Five have endorsed Clinton - including two this week - and four have endorsed Obama.

Democratic Party

That revving sound you hear is the GOP smear machine gearing up for Obama. Let's unite. Please...

The sound you hear are millions of centrist Democrats walking away from th eparty. We warned you - we are not bluffing. It's not too late.

Time to face the reality that most Americans are more towards the center, not far left. Far left is not mainstream, no matter what you read on dailykos and huffpo. You think people would have learned their lesson last go around with Kerry. What's the definition of insanity? Geez

yea I saw hes gonna try to declare himself the nominee on May 20th but we should not stand for that... in NC which doesnt mean squat for the GE I heard accounts of black churches using their church busses to take peopel to vote which is illegal by the FECs standards and anyones standards!

Simply, if you are party loyalists, vote for your party; if you are US citizens, vote for your country!!

The press should go back and review what happened at the 1980 democratic convention. Ted Kennedy - major Obama supporter - challenged Jimmy Carter for the nomination, even though Kennedy was 600 PLEDGED DELEGATES BEHIND! Big difference between 600 and 150 or whatever it will be June 3. Plus the need to count MI and FL. Why should Hillary quit? This is a democratic primary, and allegedly a democratic process, although more and more it appears to be a process run by the boys in Chicago and billionaires controlling world markets. Hillary should stay in and fight for democracy and all the democrats that Donna Brazile wants to purge from the Democratic Party.

The media is SO UNFAIR to Hillary. They need to realize that Hillary WON
Indiana. Obama is expected to win both Indiana and North Carolina since February. But, Hillary won Indiana and cut Obama's lead in North Carolina from 20% in February down to 14% in spite of ad overspending by Obama.

Wake up media people or wake up Obama-Media people. Hillary even won consecutively in Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvannia and now Indiana. Not to mention the other big states such as California, Arkansas, Florida (both not them are in the ballot) that are crucial in November. Hillary has the most electoral college votes based in these big states.

If you want a Democrat to win then Hillary should be the choice. African Americans are so unfair voting 9 to1 against Hillary not like the white people who fair and thinks who is the best candidate. Who is being racial now? This racial thing about Black has been OVERUSED, MISUSED and ABUSED by these people. Obama, the Obama camp, Clyburn, Wright and others can not fool us anymore. Stop this non-sense.

Wake up superdelegates! Wake up media people.

So if you are loyalitsts for Dems Party, then vote for your party..

If you are Americans, then vote for United States of Amierica!!!

Yes Hillary should immediately quit since the faux uniter has declared "Mission Accomplished". Unfortunately for him, she's not a quitter. Time to pull the red carpet from under the empty suit.

the truth

I dont know what rules you folow but you may have a problem because hillary controls half of the rules committee dlegates and they will pass something that will prevent Obama from getting the nomination and you will have to live with it

Stan - U up to no good again I see.

What is the deal with Michigan? MI, the DNC and Obama have agreed to a plan to seat the Michigan Delegates.

Hillary is blocking it.

Why does Hillary hate the voters of Michigan? Why does she want to disenfranchise these noble people.

Why all the hate Stanley? Does Hillz really care about Michigan?

Or does Hillary just care about Hillary?

whatever Omentum says is wrong

Posted by: staniam | May 9, 2008 12:17:39 PM

staniam,

Don't get me wrong. The rule I meant is the current "stupid" Dems' rule..

Be honest, it will take quite bit of brave people to change the stupid rule to make it sense...

Looks few and few Dems have such a gut to do it!!!

Posted by: True Truth | May 9, 2008 12:17:43 PM

Omentum

Good job with the list. Poor old Stanley, everbody picks on him.

Obama admitted again he is a quitter not a fighter when he said he can't win WV and KY....

The true leader won't ever say "I can't"...

Sorry, cirrect me: did he always claim: "yes, we can" or "yes, we can't"

Very confusing....

In light of Sen. Clinton's recent comments regarding race and gender, I consider them to be political and divisive. They are unwarranted and without merit. If it were true, Clinton would be the nominee, (but she's NOT!) OBAMA leads and will continue to lead in the most states won, popular vote as well as delegate count. At a critical time in our nation's history when the country is at war, our economy is failing we need to come together as a country, as one nation and one people. We need to change our political landscape from the traditional politics of divide and conquer. If not we fail. As gasoline prices continue to sky rocket, and job losses are a high we must move forward as one country, one people in solving the problems of this nation.

the Obama people are just a little dense they didnt know the history of presidential elections or anything in the constitution for that matter so just ignore them they are trying to get a rise out of us and Mccain to save the country from Obama is a good choice

no deal Hillary or war within the Democratic party we will get rid of the ultra left wing for good!

Posted by: staniam | May 9, 2008 12:25:47 PM

Americans won't be united behind a empty suit...

True Americans will vote for their country not for any political party!!
