Dems Behind Closed Doors Till 1:30 a.m., With Still No Consensus
May 31, 2008 3:08 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Gregory Wallace report: Democrats went behind closed doors until 1:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, but they did not reach their goal of developing a unified proposal regarding Michigan and Florida.
Twenty-eight of the 30 members of the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee were joined by DNC Chairman Howard Dean for the marathon dinner meeting that took place in a hotel ballroom at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.
"It was a full discussion; we'll see what happens," said Hillary Clinton adviser Harold Ickes. "And I think there was some agreement on some issues and still some disagreement on others."
The key sticking point is how to allocate delegates in Michigan where Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took his name off of the ballot.
There appears to be more agreement on how to proceed with Florida.
The most likely scenario is for the Sunshine State's entire delegation to be seated -- each member with 1/2 vote.
The exhausted DNC members are scheduled to reconvene publicly at 9:30 a.m. ET. They will hear from the presidential campaigns, state party officials and party members challenging the DNC's decision to strip Florida and Michigan of all delegates.
"There will probably be a little, sort of, tussling. But we're Democrats, you know we sort of do that," said Allan Katz, an Obama supporter and committee member from Florida.

Ah by the end of the week it will all be over, Obama will be the winner, and I will not need to read all these post by republicans pretending to be Hillery supporters.

Can you imagine her as President!!!
The USA falls into a deep depression like we have never seen, "Its the VOTERS fault for electing her!" LOL

Being from Florida, I am the bookend to Karela's sentiments. Both primaries were the result of poor state leadership and should not count. But I agree with others here too. If making some sort of compromised settlement to end the worst case of pandering and rule bending I've seen in elections in thirty years for Hillary's sake with the pay off that it removes any lingering doubt as to who won the primary from the minds of even the least educated, I'm all for it. The joke is Obama wins regardless of how it is settled.

jlynne,
all of the voters are being taken seriously. but, we will not let a few loud mouths hi-jack and control the democrat's selection for our presidential nominee.
clinton's argument/threat is flawed on several points.
1st, a combined group of voters which includes all the other groups voted for obama. that may mean that just like current demographics are changing the electoral map, the groups that support the democratic party may be changing, too.
2nd, you assume that everyone in the two groups you feel have the most clout will vote the same way in the general. won't happen.
3rd, you've "misstated" obama's position on gun ownership and abortion. it's balance here that matters.
trying to achieve more clout while discounting/suppressing the vote of others (states) is exactly why michigan and florida are in the boat they're in now.
hillary clinton's supporters put womanhood above all other fair principles. i am a woman, so i feel that position is crazy. it is like a mother with a son and a daughter not loving both equally. democracy is not about who's pushier, who can out-shout the loudest or who can be the most vindictive. it is about a collective unity on issues that matter to the whole group -- the group as a whole.
democracy embraces all in a fair and balanced way. play by the RULES and we'll all get along!
unless you are saying that the demographics of florida and michigan voters is peculiar (as it is in wv and ky), then the group, taken as a whole, doesn't gain or lose anything by not counting florida's and michigan's votes cast in their state's non-elections. the issue is the rules, and the rules alone.
48 states followed the rules and chose obama as the democratic nominee. at this juncture, 17 million people voted FOR obama.
the democratic majority wants a change -- a change that isn't motivated by vindictiveness that will achieve nothing. changing the rules and accepting michigan and florida's votes will not change the outcome of the democratic choice for presidential nominee. it would, however, give the republicans more fodder.
obama '08! YES WE CAN (AND WE WILL)!

LOL, Priceless!!

"It appears that if Obama is on the ticket, some groups of Clinton-supporting Democrats are more susceptible to bolting the party and voting for the Republican nominee next fall than are others."
They have apparently polled the wrong groups. I will not vote for Clinton and I've never voted republican in my life. I vote the economy, period. I vote Obama!

Sen Obama took a name off from ballot because he recognized he cannot win in Michigan.
Posted by: whatever | May 31, 2008 6:55:07 AM
Perception is reality.
No logical explanation is going to prevent the people in Florida and Michigan from believing they were deprived of a meaningful voice in this election -- or that the DNC played an important role in that deprivation.
No amount of cajoling is going to convince a pro-life democrat that someone who blocked the implementation of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act shares their values.
No amount of cajoling is going to convince a pro-2nd Amendment democrat that someone who favors implementing the UN Millenium standards banning all small arms shares their values. If you look at the Obama Global Anti-Poverty bill, Obama's position paper that his staffers completed, and his statements in Chicago where he said that the city was more dangerous for school children than Baghdad was for IL soldiers -- my characterization of his position is not overstated.
I imagine he will have difficulty cajoling conservative democrats to support his position on decriminalizing marijuana and ending the war on drugs too.
We live in a soundbite world -- those soundbites are going to be very powerful

Just another excuse!!!
Great find!

All of us are judged by the company and friends we keep. "Birds of a feather flock together". Wright/Otis/Pfegler/Ayers/"I am prud of my country for the first time" all fir together. Pfleglers racist sexist statements confirms that vitriol was spewing consistently in that church for 20 yrs. Despite all the lies and denials of no knowledge whatsoever despite the spirtual mentor/sdvisors/friend/uncle/family tags the chieckens will come home to roost. Is the Democratic party so dumb and blind that it simply does not understand simple Math and logic to add 1+1+1+1=4. It is time for all of Reagan Democrats to reject the Democratic party once and for all and despite having the worst ever, yes the worst ever President in our History leave office, vote JM back into office. I will never, repeat never, elect someone with such radical anti-american frinds to office. Stick around Hillary. The Republicans will write Chapters 10,11, 12,13, 14 and 15 to the Wright saga. There will be much more to follow.

Being judged by the company we keep, Doesnt mean we have the same mind set of the people we keep as company.
And can you say listening to a pastor speak once a week for an hour is really keeping company?
Lots of people "use" church for buisness connections, Not saying this is why Obama went to church....Im just saying.

Obama's position paper that his staffers completed, and his statements in Chicago where he said that the city was more dangerous for school children than Baghdad was for IL soldiers
--------
Actually the number of miliatary personnel killed in Badhdad IS less than the number of school-aged kids killed in Chicago every year.
So people have a problem with facts?
Posted by: Tara James | May 31, 2008 7:10:03 AM
No -- I watched in horror when parents were forced to send their kids to school on a bus with armed guards. The situation in Chicago is abhorrent -- if change is needed anywhere it is needed there.
My point was Obama gave a speech -- after something like 5 school children were killed in a week -- where he said the solution to the problem was gun control -- that handguns were not used for hunting and should be banned.
The problem is real and should be addressed -- I just don't think most people who support the 2nd Amendment will agree with his solution.
I didn't mention Obama opposing the death penalty for gang-related murders. I have already seen the Willie Horton-like add for that. I'll see if I can post the link.

This blog is a bit misleading...
They should have mentioned that Obama did NOT put his name on the ballot in MI, It was added, When Obama found out that his name had been added to the ballot he removed his name.
He knew that MI votes did not count so this talk about him removing his name when he knew he was behind is really stupid.

Thank You!
People who buy into this stuff are the same people who hear 10 seconds of something on the evening news and never bother to look further.
These same people circulate emails with blatent lies and think because it's in print it must be true. They never bother to consider the credibility of the source.
Now those are the SCARY people in our society, far more so than some over zealous church pastors. Because they can led like lemmings over the cliff and never question it.

The DNC has sent a message to the Democratic voters, that they are Gods over the people. What they want and say is more important than the Democrats in the party.
They have meddled in the election. They have altered the course of the election.
The refused to have a meeting in the beginning for the people, but will now have a meeting to decided upon what they want, not the people.
The have proven they do not care about what the people of the party wants. What is in best Interest of the entire party. what is in Best interest of the country.
That is Not democratic.
That Is Not American
That is the DNC playing God and being political Fixers.

The election in MI and FL wouldn't stand the scrutiny of any election commission anywhere in the world.

It is about fairness...fairness to the millions that went out and voted. Hillary put her name on the ballot in Michigan, Obama could have chosen to do so but decided for whatever reason, not too...but Obama DID put his name on the ballot in Florida, again he did not have too, so why did he? And, it is good judgment too, didn't Obama think that millions and millions of voters might be upset it they went down and voted and their votes were not counted? He didn't think that far ahead---Hillary did. So we want to elect a man that doesn't think ahead ofr think that all Americans should have their votes counted..hmmmm
Posted by: Anne | May 31, 2008 7:37:03 AM
Obama naturally does not want Michigan or Florida to re-vote as it has been offered by several to pay for it....let the true American vote count...Obama's campaign say no because he would loose in both and Hillary Clinton would really stand out as being ahead in popular vote. Obama says NO! You cannot have these people re-vote, I will not accept that and I am in charge now.............democracy is a thing of the past...too many older and white people in Florida and blue collar workers in Michigan. Forget them I do not need them.
