Hillary Clinton's Electoral Map Argument

Share

May 09, 2008 10:48 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Hillary Clinton was back in Louisville, Ky., Friday night delivering her stump speech. She rolled through her lines at the Democratic Party dinner in this state where she is up in the polls, as many in the audience cheered while holding “Hillary” signs.

Sen. Clinton re-introduced her electoral map argument, which she raised yesterday in West Virginia, where she said “delegate math may be complicated, but the electoral math is easy.” Clinton on Friday night sought to make the same argument that she can win the election in November despite Sen. Barack Obama’s lead in delegates.

Clinton said, “The only way we can have a Democrat in that White House come next January is to win in November, and we cannot win unless we can win 270 electoral votes. Look at the map and figure out where we are going to get those votes and which candidate is more likely to be able to win those votes in November.”

Clinton even offered a jab toward her opponent during the dinner saying, “We have had enough of speeches. Enough promises. That’s not going to solve our problems. What we need is action.”

The senator was introduced by superdelegate and DNC committee member Terry McBrayer, who ribbed Sen. Obama for not spending time in Kentucky.

“We have been looking for Obama in Kentucky,” he said.  “I personally contacted with Dean’s Milk Company, and we are putting Obama’s picture on a carton of milk to see if we can find him in Kentucky.”

The crowd booed, to which McBrayer responded, “Bring it on.”

Clinton saw the opportunity later in her speech to remind guests that she made the effort to be at the dinner. “I am the only candidate here tonight in Kentucky with all of you,” Clinton said to a loud cheer.

No matter how hard she tries, no superdelegates are going to be so foolish as to completely ignore the primary results and simply hand her the nomination because she says she has a better chance of winning in the fall.

Al Gore could win - why not nominate him? It's a silly argument born out of desperation and a rampant desire to do anything to win this thing.

Boy this just posted story from timesonline.com showing Obama's advisor was meeting with Hamas?? Now Obama's firing him !!! he was meeting with them regularly and this advisor had no love for Israel to say the least!! Here's your miracle Hillary!! happy Mother's Day from BO!!

Any other candidate in Hillary Clinton's position would be getting no attention.

She has ZERO chance to win the nomination.

She is behind by 171 pledged delegates and Obama is surging past her in superdelegates and Edwards delegates in south carolina are about to endorse him.

THIS NOMINATION IS OVER.

Why is the media covering her candidacy when she has no chance at the nomination.

Lets move on to the general election already.

Hillary is in massive debt stop encouraging her to waste money which Obama will eventually have to get his donors to pay.

OK Trolls - please go AWAY!

I've searched timesonline, used Google, and have even done full searches of 6 different news sites.

Guess what? There's absolutely no reference to OBAMA or anyone else working in his campaign ever having had ANY contact with or other association with Hamas or any other terrorist organization.

You guys are pathetic. Did McCain hire you?

Posted by: Fred | May 9, 2008 11:26:27 PM

Hillary's prediction that Obama cannot win in Nov. will be proven true. He will never attract enough moderates. McCain will be a one term president and Hillary will run in 2012. Obama will go back to teaching.(I'm betting my retirement on this...see Intrade)

Posted by: Peggy In PA | May 9, 2008 11:29:59 PM

Hillary is staying in until the end of the primaries. Give her a hard time if you want, but she has legitimate reasons.

She promised all her supporters, fundraiser, and women everywhere she would battle to the end.

She will continue to point out her strengths, which include the electorial map, blue collar white vote, women etc....

These are legitimate public issues we already know that isnt going to hurt Obama anymore than it already has.

She will fight on because there is only 3 weeks left and she is not a quitter.

She knows she cant win, but is expanding the base by registration.

I think the super delegates should have come out after North Carolina or kept quiet until after june 3rd.

Not this 1/2 baked way of sort of coming out, harassing clinton to get out, but yet Obama hasnt won yet.

That is just stupid.

Fred just because you couldnt find it doesnt mean its not true Obama will have major problems with half the democratic party gettign elected and we will not help him! Hillary people will fight at the convention regardless

What's the matter, guys - afraid a woman might just become the president of the United States? For goodness sakes, give her a fair chance to see what she can do and give the little people like me a chance to cast my vote to. Hilary knows how to roll with the punches and get up and fight for what she wants. If she was president she would fight for us too...Gail from Arizona

yea it was movon.orgg that screwed it up for kerry in 2004 and they have been spending so much just on ideological grounds and saying that anyone that disagrees with Obama and the Obamabots are racists is ludicrous I will vote for Mcaiin or a third party and fix his little red wagon!

Posted by: staniam | May 9, 2008 11:37:11 PM

How does Mr. Obama, the likely Democratic Party nominee, propose to win Pennsylvania in the general election? If he can't pull off a win there he cannot win...period.

Posted by: Brock | May 9, 2008 11:38:51 PM

Clinton is the only one who will be able to defeat McCain in November. Obama is promises while she offers solutions. Also, Obama listens to the ranting of a pastor for 20 years against America while Oprah had enough sense to leave Wright's church after a few short years. Who do you really want to be in the White House?

Posted by: Lillie | May 9, 2008 11:38:53 PM

No she will not get out of the race and when she wins wva and KY by 30 and 40 pts respectively you will have doubts about your candidate again!

Posted by: staniam | May 9, 2008 11:39:13 PM

While there will be fall out from those Clinton supporters who truly don't have the best interest of the party at heart, the majority will support Obama. Saying that just because she won certain states has never been used before because it just won't hold water.
This is a last ditch effort for her to try to show someone..anyone...that she still has a chance.
Sooner or later I hope someone can get her to deal with reality.

Posted by: Sam | May 9, 2008 11:43:13 PM

yeah cause 30-40 point wins in states that have the lowest delegate amounts will equal to about a net gain of what Obama picked up today in superdelegates.

WV is 27 delegates. How many did Obama get today. 9. Oh and guess what...hes already ahead 166 delegates.

Posted by: Rob | May 9, 2008 11:44:09 PM

its all DOnna Braziles fault she basically called paul begala a racist and threatened to vote for mccain because shes wealthy.... thats the whole party divide here rich elitist supers want the most liberal candidate available when Clinton can win over a broader coalition I wont stand for it!

Hehe, you Clinton supporters, your a funny bunch. Question, if Hillary was stock, and you need that stock for you retirement to generate income, would you still hold it? One lady is willing to bet her retirement on her winning. I'll tack that bet! The extra money will by me a another boat. Question for McCain: What is the official policy for the military/armed forces of the United States for soldiers when it comes to being capture as a POW. What is it you are supposed to do at any opportunity, at any time, regardless of potential of personal injury? By the way, if anyone wants to see what it would sound like to be around cult members, check out Hillary's Blog. And don't forget your candles!

This is in response to the arguing about Obamas campaign official meeting with Hamas. One of his “Informal” campaign advisors named Rob Malley. Malley regularly met with people in Hamas. So yes the story is true. Another doublespeak by Obama? That’s up to you.

Hillary was raised in a middle-class family in the middle of a state in the middle of America in the middle of the last century.

From that classic suburban childhood in Park Ridge, Illinois, Hillary went on to become one of America's foremost advocates for children and families; an attorney twice voted one of the most unethical in America; a First Lady of Arkansas who helped transform the schools to the state that they are in today; a bona fide war hero; a bestselling "ghosted" author; a First Lady for America who helped transform that role into dishonor, becoming a chump for health care and families at home, and a champion of women's rights and human rights around the world - except for unborn children, against whom she took her stand.

Since her wind-breaking election to the United States Senate, Hillary has been a steadfast advocate for middle-class families, working fruitlessly to help create jobs, expand children's health care and abortion, and prevent Social Security from realization.

As the Senator representing New York after 9/11, Hillary has fought to strengthen our approach to homeland security and to improve our communications and intelligence operations.

As the first New Yorker ever named to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hillary, though she voted for the War, and has stated her desire to wage nuclear war on Iran, has been a tough critic of the administration's bungling of Iraq and a fierce advocate for proper equipment, health benefits, and treatment for military families.

I know I am talking to a wall here but the Supreme Court is a very serious issue. And it's not just about abortion. This is not politics of fear it is the real thing. Are you really that naive that you don't think conservative judges could change this country. It won't take years if it is a conservative court. Earth to Calli, some will be retiring soon and then we are in deep trouble if McCain is the pres.

Bishop, Staniam

I was trying for days to get the Obama supporters to chill out and bring the party together.

The could care less. Kennedy could care less.

The party has left anyone who isnt a left wing liberal out in the cold.

The whole election was a sham right from the moment it was obvious the liberal media was going to do anything within its power to HYPE Obama to death and put Clinton down.

3 out of 4 people get all their info about the candidates directly from the media.

Clinton didnt see it coming. Thats why she made no strategy after Feb 5th. All the polling indicated Obama would have been drastically behind after super tuesday.

But the dems have no intention of putting the party back together. They want a LIBERAL party . They dont seem to care much about the moderates or conservative democrats.

I think they are going to tank themselves right out of the white house.

According to the Obama supporters, we have to control the judges ad infinitum or they will strike down Roe vs Wade.

How long can liberals hold onto the majority of judges? 5 years? 10 years?

Besides, many democrats are moderates and conservative democrats. They are pro life.

Roe vs Wade isnt a major factor for them.

Anyone who votes soley on the abortion issue is going to vote for Obama anyways.

the Congressman that endorsed Hillary after tuesdays primaries was my congressman heath shuler he is pro life while Im on the fence about that issue the party has every right to have all voices heard not the extreme left THe Kennedys have been looking for payback for several decades now and the entire party shouldnt give into them I think Hillary can win as an independant but I will personally guarantee that Obama will not be elected president

Posted by: staniam | May 10, 2008 1:11:25 AM

A good example is myself.

I am pro life. Hillary and Bill are pro choice. So what? My wife is a republican and we are both Christians so we are pro life anyways.

I am a democrat because of many of the things that are inclusive to the poor as democrats.

John Mc Cain is no conservative. He is very liberal for a Republican. He is pro life.

Obama offers up the liberal left wing of america. And I dont want ANYTING to do with it.

I think we had so many people in the democratic party to begin with because of Bill and Hillary Clinton. They attracted moderates.

Reagan cleaned up Carter and stole every blue collar worker and moderate back into the republican party.

Clinton came and stole them back.

Thus 'reagan democrats' were born.

Obama is so left wing, its Jimmy Carter all over again, and sure enough Mc Cain will steal them right back again.

I swear Kennedy, Kerry and Pelosi are IDIOTS.

Rasmussen Reports has been tracking the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination daily for nineteen months… since November 2006. For the last few months, the most remarkable feature of the race has been its consistency and stability. Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are both running historic campaigns and both have captured the votes and hearts of distinct and important constituencies within the Democratic Party. Obama has won Primaries in states where the demographics favor his campaign and Clinton has won in the states that favor her campaign.

However, while Senator Clinton has remained close and competitive in every meaningful measure, she is a close second and the race is over. It has become clear that Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee.

At the moment, Senator Clinton’s team is busily trying to convince Superdelegates and pundits that she is more electable than Barack Obama. For reasons discussed in a separate article, it doesn’t matter. Even if every single Superdelegate was convinced that the former First Lady is somewhat more electable than Obama, that is not enough of a reason to deny him the nomination.

With this in mind, Rasmussen Reports will soon end our daily tracking of the Democratic race and focus exclusively on the general election competition between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama. Barring something totally unforeseen, that is the choice American voters will have before them in November. While we have not firmly decided upon a final day for tracking the Democratic race, it is coming soon.

They're using Roe v Wade as a scare tactic aimed at female Hillary supporters. When that doesn't work, they talk about how the Supreme Court Judges will rule on myriad issues that will be detrimental to the dems. As tomdavie mentioned, moderate and conservative dems aren't afraid of McCains appointments. We're far more afraid of Obama's cabinet appointees.

Posted by: Emily | May 10, 2008 1:12:15 AM

I really think it is funny that they would use Roe v wade on democrats with a pi--ed of congress how much do you think McCain could get passed.Iam not giving up on Hillary and I am telling anyone who will listen about a bunch of us have Hillary and MCCain bumper stickers on our cars

the funny thing is you think you have power since you are an Obamabot its not about hate or racism or not being liberal enough its about being right and Obama has consistently proven hes not and ABC isnt goign to listen to you because you are an almighty Obama supporter the left of the democratic party is dead as far as Im concerned because we keep sending up those candidates and they keep losing not this time... we will force the party to go a different route and if the insist on Obama then we will ensure he will not be elected!

Posted by: staniam | May 10, 2008 1:15:14 AM

If Hillary is not the nominee, Obama still will not get my vote, and will leave this party as well, even if Hillary shares the ticket with Obama or try to help unite this party around Obama, I will be through with this gender-biased party for good.

Obama is not tobe trusted, I guess the Obama supporters wil realize this when it's too late to turn things around, but if thngs don't go your way if Obama becomes President, don't hollier Impeachment take his mess like adult and be quite, just role with the punches for allowing yourself to be duped by an smooth talking slickster like Obama. I hope this party learn it's lesson for being irresponsible by voting for a Johnny Come Lately Senator to fix the mes that needs the experience of an real seasoned Presidential cnadidate like Hillary.

Hillary, never quit never give-up let Obama earn every vote, just don't hand Obama the nomination, because he does not deserve it. Run Independent if you have to, please don't stick witha party who's members that throw an experienced candidate under the bus for a inexperienced candidate who preaches flase hope and change, and a party who don't think women are qualfied enough to be President and are biased agaisnt women being President this is discriminatory in nature, Hillary, you don't deserve or need to be in a party like that.

This trial will be over soon and there are those who think that Rezko will start talking about the Rezko/Obama connection and why the Rezko paid $625,000 for property to help the Obama save $2oo,ooo on their South Chicago mansion. Many think that Senator Obama is flawed goods, Rev Wright, his Black Liberation Church, Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko and terror group support. He will not win in November.

Posted by: staniam | May 10, 2008 1:25:44 AM

@ Nicholas,

Actually, Carter was left-wing. He's not nearly as "latte left" as the rest of the gang- Kennedy, Leahy, Pelosi, Dean. Nevertheless, he was rather left, so to speak. Gore is somewhat moderate. The rest of the latte's: McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry represent the losers club. Cater became a loser while in office. After Bill Clinton served two economically successful terms (the first dem to do it since FDR), the latte's went on a frenzied mission to regain power. And, you're absolutely right, they've chosen yet another loser for the club-Obama.

THe left wing wont let the center or right wing of the party do anything with partial birth etc and they need to the only time in modern times that we got anything done was when Bill clinton negotiated with the Republican congress pelosi and emmanuel etc are competely nuts

Posted by: staniam | May 10, 2008 1:28:40 AM

I had no idea how many radicals and freaks there was in the party until Obama showed up.

This is what happens when you let the far left loose . They think anyone who isnt a far left liberal is wrong.

I was too young to remember the 1976 election, but I can tell you Carter barely won and then got crushed in 1980.

Kennedy was elected in 1960, shot in 63, and LBJ, a conservative democrat, served until 68.

Then the fiasco with liberals went on thru Mc Govern , thru Carter, until Clinton came along.

Liberal rarely get into power, and when they do, they have IDIOT administrations and are shot or kicked out immediately.

I love how they always go to the college's to pick off the young I can remember being caught up in sixty eight and then not getting there to vote do you think they will all come out and vote the youth?

I had no idea how many radicals and freaks there was in the party until Obama showed up.

This is what happens when you let the far left loose . They think anyone who isnt a far left liberal is wrong.

I was too young to remember the 1976 election, but I can tell you Carter barely won and then got crushed in 1980.

Kennedy was elected in 1960, shot in 63, and LBJ, a conservative democrat, served until 68.

Then the fiasco with liberals went on thru Mc Govern , thru Carter, until Clinton came along.

Liberal rarely get into power, and when they do, they have IDIOT administrations and are shot or kicked out immediately.

yea my mom has always been concerned that this election will turn out liek '68 that was the year before I was born but history repeats itself I guess and No I dont think they will come out in the GE they were bribed to come back from vacation etc and vote in the caucues etc but you know the caucuses are secret and nobody knows what goes on inside after the doors are locked and at any rate there have been 34 million votes cast and of those only 1 MILLION in the caucuses and thats where obama gets his lead

Goldenstate,

I'm with Hillary also.
I don't know about the rule, if her name is not on the ballot.
I'm afraid they would count it to Obama?
You better ask around.
I'd stay home unless she runs as Independent, I will vote for her.

Hillary will still win. I know it.

It's too bad that Obama voters don't know they are being played by Republicans so that McCain can win. Republicans own the media and the media has been anti-Hillary from the getgo. Haven't you Obamabots ever wondered why? Listen, McCain can easily defeat Obama and the Repubs know it. I wish the Obama Dems weren't so foolish. You're going to sink our country if Obama gets the nomination.

What came as a big suprise to me was the way they split the Del. up who knew what a messed up cluster##### How can you win big states and get more votes and not ge more Del

Posted by: Bishop | May 10, 2008 1:39:19 AM

@ staniam:
Lol. Bernie Sanders, that's hysterical.
My guess is, if Obama does get the nod, Kennedy will chose the running mate. It'll be someone they think will appeal to us. NOT!

I wanted to also mention that like you, I had a strange dream last night. From what I remember, it was about something from Obama's past coming back to haunt him soon; catapulting Hillary to win. I'm hoping it was a premonition!

You're correct.

Nicholas,

Hi. This is Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi. Yes we are listening, especially to you. Thanks for your post. I think that will go down in history as the most influential post in American history. And you know what, you're right! We've decided to vote for McCain too...all because of your well reasoned and level-headed argument. We probably would not have even heard your post had it not been for your use of caps lock and the 5 extra question marks you inserted after your question. I'm sure McCain is proud to have you representing him. Thanks for enlightening us all.

truly,
Howard and Nancy
