McCain Has Record Fundraising Month

Share

May 20, 2008 6:22 PM

ABC News’s Bret Hovell reports: Senator John McCain raised approximately $18 million during the month of April, according to a spokeswoman for his campaign.

That is the most that McCain has raised in any month of the campaign so far.  But it is less than half of what the Obama campaign says it raised in the month of March, $41 million, and less than what Senator Clinton reoprtedly raised that month as well, $20 million.

The Democratic rivals have not yet released their April fundraising numbers.

The Arizona Republican, who is scheduled to receive the nomination of his party for president in September, has dedicated considerable time and resources to his fundraising effort in recent weeks.

McCain’s campaign, which needed a $4 million loan in order to keep operating at the end of 2007, has seen a remarkable turnaround in its fundraising prowess. At a New York City fundraiser in early May, McCain raised $7 million in one evening.

Under a new fundraising structure created by the campaign and the Republican National Committee, a donor can give up to $70,000 to the "McCain Victory 2008," significantly more than the $2,300 individual donor limit set by campaign finance laws. If a donor gives the maximum amount the money is split into multiple funds that all benefit McCain's campaign: the first $2,300 of that money goes to the McCain campaign itself, the next $28,000  goes to the RNC, and the rest is divided among four swing states the campaign plans to target in the general election. Those targeted states are: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and New Mexico.

This week McCain is holding or has held fundraising in four states: Illinois, Georgia, Florida and California.

Next week he’s scheduled to fundraise with President George W. Bush in McCain's hometown of Phoenix.

we have nothing to fear but fear itself; o, yeah and sinking economy. thanks bush
p.s nothing like voting for a canadidate that states the economy isn't really his thing. If we build enough bombs maybe our kids could skip the 11th and 12th grade and go straight into the armed forces.

if mcain wins gas will be 7 dollars a gal.and hopefully some of the idiots who vote for him will lose everything

Posted by: ray | May 20, 2008 7:49:58 PM

I love how all Republicats are on here posing as Democrats saying how they will support McInsane! Too funny. Actually, I hate to break it to ya, but Obama is peeling away Clinton's base: women, elderly, non-educated, unions...

If you didn't know this, you should keep up with the news. Don't try to cause "chaos" by saying that you a "Clinton" supporter will vote for McSame in the fall---because I don't believe it! Democrats are too smart for this. Sorry!!

BTW, Obama will come out with record $$ figures for April. A lot of my friends and I donated twice that month.

Go Obama!!

Democrats Unite!
Democrats in the White House 08!!

Hey, Ray at 7:49:58PM

Ironic, I remember someone writing once somthing very similar IN 1999, like "if BUSH wins, gas will be 4 dollars a gal. and hopefully some of the idiots who vote for him will lose everything"

IF WE DON'T LEARN FROM OUR PAST MISTAKES, WE ARE DESTINED TO REPEAT THEM!

I wonder how many of the rank and file posting here haven't personally felt the pinch from Exxon's profits.

Obviously many people with money want war with Iran, and endless occupation in Iraq. The republicans have no chance in this upcoming election, and I am one, at least an old school type.

I guess it's true republicans and conservatives are cheap and tight with their money. Where is the their support?

McCain hardly needs any more to beat a total loser like Barack Humphrey Obama. With that brain dead, never-grew up teenage "community organizer" who thinks he can play with the grown ups, its smoooth sailing to the White House for John McCain, American.

Obama's money bought him a 41% defeat in WV and a 35% defeat in KY. McCain doesn't need a penny to get my registered Democrat vote if Obama is on the ballot.

Look at the hate and bloodshed in all black countries. They are killing millions of their own people. They have no concience. They have no heart. Since Nelson mandella took over South Africa, it is in total chaos. They are starving, unemployed, and after killing or running off all the white farmers that were feeding the people and holding the country together, now they have started killing each other. May God forbid that this great nation has a black man running it. McCain has the guts and the leadership we desperately need.

One post said if cain gets in, gas will go to $7.00. Put your head back on, with a brain in it.U might think of taking a trip to OZ to get one. Don't matter who gets in, it's going up anyway. Last term of Bill ( slick} Clinton, it went over $2.00...

I just don't get liberal mentality.

Why is that every four years we are told about how stupid the Republican nominee is....and in contrast the Dem nominee is so brilliant - sometimes too smart.

Reagan was a clueless old man. Bush was a wimp and his VP was stupid for misspelling a vegetable. GWB is a complete idiot. And now Mcain is stupid too.

But Carter? A brilliant politician. Trounced by Reagan

Mondale was the wise senator that really understood foreign policy. Lost 49 states.

Dukakis was an intelluctual. Lost a 15+ point lead.

Clinton was a Rhode scholar or something and has been said to be one of the smartest politicians ever. So smart he got impeached. He did beat Dole who was not accused of being dumb - but was "really mean".

Gore was supposed to be a policy genius - could win his own state or Clintons' own state - either of which would have made him President.

Kerry was this brilliant intelluctual. Lost by 4 points.

And now Obama (who thinks he can just sit and talk Iran out of hating us) is the next Lincoln and Hillary (who can't remember if she was shot at in Bosnia) is the smartest woman in the world?

So how is it possible that all of these dummies win elections? Let me guess, the American people are stupid too!

Ever notice everybody who doesn;t vote for a Dem is stupid? Except when the vote for Dems and then they are enlightened and "they embrace a message of hope and change."

Whatever.

So let's see... you have antagonized the Clinton supporters, jacked up the Independents and now you are working on the Republicans. I can't wait to see how you expect your candidate to win, at most with 25% of the electorate! I will be sure to hit the blogs in November, of course that is assuming you people still have the money to pay your power bills ... as a matter of fact, as a self-supporting tax payer I have come to the conclusion that if you people can raise this much money for Sen. Obama's campaign you can well afford your own healthcare and college education. Start saving your money folks, I think you are going to have to learn to pay and earn your way, if you want to live in this society. :-)
