McCain Has Record Fundraising Month

ABC News’s Bret Hovell reports: Senator John McCain raised approximately $18 million during the month of April, according to a spokeswoman for his campaign.

That is the most that McCain has raised in any month of the campaign so far.  But it is less than half of what the Obama campaign says it raised in the month of March, $41 million, and less than what Senator Clinton reoprtedly raised that month as well, $20 million.

The Democratic rivals have not yet released their April fundraising numbers.

The Arizona Republican, who is scheduled to receive the nomination of his party for president in September, has dedicated considerable time and resources to his fundraising effort in recent weeks.

McCain’s campaign, which needed a $4 million loan in order to keep operating at the end of 2007, has seen a remarkable turnaround in its fundraising prowess. At a New York City fundraiser in early May, McCain raised $7 million in one evening.

Under a new fundraising structure created by the campaign and the Republican National Committee, a donor can give up to $70,000 to the "McCain Victory 2008," significantly more than the $2,300 individual donor limit set by campaign finance laws. If a donor gives the maximum amount the money is split into multiple funds that all benefit McCain's campaign: the first $2,300 of that money goes to the McCain campaign itself, the next $28,000  goes to the RNC, and the rest is divided among four swing states the campaign plans to target in the general election. Those targeted states are: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and New Mexico.

This week McCain is holding or has held fundraising in four states: Illinois, Georgia, Florida and California.

Next week he’s scheduled to fundraise with President George W. Bush in McCain's hometown of Phoenix.

McCain's biggest concern should be that a sizeable number of Republicans aren't very enthusiastic about him over his positions on global warming, amnesty for illegal immigrants and a host of other issues. That being said, at some point (June? July?) we're finally going to get to a general election season and funny things can happen, anyone remember how both Gore and Kerry held the lead until the debates, when the supposed idiot Bush came back to beat them both? I wouldn't call this race over for anything. As for the crack about Rush Limbaugh, the whole purpose of Operation Chaos was to ensure that Democrats fought amongst themselves as long as possible. Seems like it's working, don't you think?

McCain makes a lot of mistakes when he talks about foreign policy. He does not know the leadership structure of Iran. He confuses the different clans in Iran. He says things like let's stay in Iraq for 100 years. No he does not know foreign policy. McCain is a fake.

I'm in my fifth decade of life, going on my sixth. To be honest I cannot remember our country not being in a war with some other country. Why? is the world that screwed up that we take all comers for what now seems like silly petty stuff. Granted the twin towers attack was not petty stuff. But we lost who the real killers were. Why do we need to test our new weapons and our alleged tough guy presidents on the poor peoples of the world? Have we gone mad? Presidents lead nations to a better future, not to war at every opportunity. There are times to be strong and unrelenting. Pay attention to who is leading you and why. World domination should never be our aim, though we act like it to the world.
