McCain, Obama Ready to Rumble
May 11, 2008 2:48 PM
ABC News' Ron Claiborne and Sunlen Miller report: The McCain campaign is eager to engage in a series of unconventional joint forums with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., as soon as June if Obama emerges as the Democratic presidential nominee.
Charles Black, an advisor to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., suggested a number of town hall-style debates with the candidates sharing the stage and fielding questions from voters in the audience. The events would not necessarily involve a moderator or taking questions from reporters as has usually been the format for the dozens of Democratic and Republican debates over the last year.
The New York Times reported Sunday that the idea was "floated" by the McCain campaign. Black said he was not sure how it came up or who brought it but. Obama said Saturday it was a "great idea."
There will be no formal discussions until the Democratic race is settled, however.
"John McCain has repeatedly encouraged these types of appearances with his opponents in the past, but in order to extend all due respect to Sen. (Hillary) Clinton, we will look forward to welcoming the arrangements when the Democrats have actually chosen their nominee," said Brooke Buchanan, Mcain's traveling national press secretary.
McCain is comfortable in and experienced with the town-hall meeting format. He is much more adept at the free-flowing exchange with voters than he is delivering formal speeches. He held more than 100 such events in New Hampshire alone leading up to the January primary.
At a press availability Saturday in Bend, Ore., Obama confirmed that he would be open to the townhall/debates that McCain's advisors have suggested.
"I think that’s a great idea," he said. "Obviously we’d have to think through the logistics on this but to the extent that -- should I be the nominee -- if I have the opportunity to debate substantive issues before the voters with John McCain, that’s something I’m going to welcome."

I hope I can attend one and ask a question. I'd ask McCain if he is considering trying to institute a Draft if he wins. On his website, his plan for Iraq states that we need more troops there but interestingly he doesn't say how he plans to implement this. It's not like people are knocking down doors to sign up for our all volunteer military. So I'd ask if a Draft is in our future?

Because aside from policy, people chose candidates on personality and communication.
Some states, Hillary has won the women vote 70%-30%
With John McCain, people will clearly choose on policy. The difference between both Obama and McCain on policy is great.

I CANT beleive they are going to let him talk without a speech or teleprompters. um..ahh..umm..change!

JA, you must be kidding. Don't tell that to his campaign strategists. You might be very disappointed. Obama will have flying colors against McCain in all their upcoming debates. Guaranteed!

I've seen John McCain debates and town hall meetings and trust me, he's anything BUT great.
Sad to say but he sounds old and tired. As if he's grasping for breath.
Obama would beat McCain in debates and town hall meetings. There is no way McCain would be able to defend his policies without defended Bush policies.

Obama cannot field questions that are not scripted without "uh" and "um" and "you know" being thrown in.
He will simply get killed. Trust me. He performs horribly in debates. He is only known for giving scripted monologues.
It will be a riot to watch.

These talks should be really informative... Obama is a superb orator and holds his own one on one.... McCain will talk all soft-like, but will likely get confused over who we are fighting, where they are based and will have to back peddle on all of his issues that have flipped and flopped.... I can't wait for the fun to begin!

Even Hiilary would find her debating match in John McCain. Obama? You know McCain Is going to lay Obama's National Security issues Wide open. At last we would watch Obama squirm dealing with all his Terrorist associations the Media conveniently would not report.
McCain understands National Security is front and center. All other National issues are pointless without a secure environment to exist.

How will Obama answer questions about his "friendship" with Ayers (the terrorist). And how will he answer that he lied when he said he hadn't heard Wright's comments before (when he has, it has been documented by a reporter long ago who sat there behind him and watched him nod).
This will be catastrophe. You don't understand the Republican machine. They will destroy Obama within a month when they turn up the heat. They are relentless and smart (despite what you people think).
In the end, who in this country will vote for a man with ties to terrorists, Iraqi billionaires, a racist and conspiracy theorist preacher, etc?
He is doomed. The press holiday for Obama is over.
Look at how much damage has already been done to reputation by WRight.

I've favored Hillary since before this nomination process even started, but if Obama is choosen, then fine, I'll live with it. I'd rather have Clinton, but I'd take a three legged dog over a republican.

JA, Obama is far better at capturing people's ears than McCain. That's how he's made it this far. When McCain talks, nobody wants to hear it. We know what he's selling and America is sick of it. 7 out of 10 people say this country is headed in the wrong direction. You say he's a better debater. I say he's gonna have to be a better deceiver if he wants to win this election.

JA, I have high respect for McCain. But being not able to differentiate between Shiites and Sunnis is too scary for me.

Canuck,
Who said she wants to become his VP?
No way!

i watched most of those debates and thought Obama did fine. I liked Hillary then and now, I believe she beat him most times. That said, Obama will cream McCain.

So JR, whose been keeping you safe over the past 7 years?
Posted by: Kathy | May 11, 2008 5:03:37 PM
Kathy, I'd say luck. It sure as hell hasn't been Bush/Cheney and it won't be McCain.
Posted by: JR | May 11, 2008 5:06:07 PM
When you say SAFE, do you mean as in the economy or do you mean safe from all those NON-existent chemical/biological/nuclear weapons that Iraq didn't have?
Posted by: JR | May 11, 2008 5:08:10 PM
To give McCain some slack, I just remembered that Lieberman will probably be there is help McCain get his facts straight. They'll need a podium big enough for both men though.

Kathy,
Who is our real enemy, AlCaida or the Iraqis. Please read your history.
