McCain on 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart

ABC News’ Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain today made his 13th appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" -- and his first as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee -- calling himself the "worst nightmare" of terrorist organizations like Hamas.

Comedian Jon Stewart, the show’s host, asked McCain about comments he had made that Hamas, which controls the Gaza strip in Israel and which the United States government considers a terrorist organization, had endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Do you feel bad that you said that?" Stewart asked McCain.

McCain indicated that he did not, because a spokesman for Hamas in the United States had said that the group was hoping Obama would be elected president.

"I think they think I’m their worst nightmare," McCain said. "And I think that I’m their worst nightmare as well."

Stewart also asked McCain about his relationship with President Bush, who has very low approval ratings, and comments McCain made indicating he would support a troop presence in Iraq for decades after fighting has stopped.

"What are you doing with this 100 years thing," Stewart asked McCain. "There’s an ad out that says you want to be in Iraq for 100 years."

McCain explained his comments, which he is asked about regularly on the stump, saying that if there are no U.S. casualties, Americans will be comfortable with a security arrangement such as the one the United States has with Korea

Before the more serious questions, Stewart peppered McCain with questions about what his life is like as the Republican nominee, how he feels about his role as head of his party and what it is like to be protected by the Secret Service, which McCain had originally tried to avoid even after becoming the Republican frontrunner.

"I just resisted that because of the fact that it does separate you from people," McCain said. "But it’s a necessary thing and they’re great people and I’m glad to have them."

Stewart threw out some potential secret service code names for the 71-year-old.

"McDreamy? McSteamy?" Stewart suggested to approval from McCain. "How about this one: Grumple Stiltskin."

For his part, McCain joked that he had picked his running mate. With fanfare he pulled out a piece of paper upon which the name of Dwight Schrute, the power-hungry but bumbling character from the NBC sitcom "The Office," was written. Stewart’s audience seemed to approve.

"That is pandering," Stewart joked when McCain received applause.

McCain’s press secretary Brooke Buchanan explained that McCain is a fan of "The Office" and was trying to make a joke.

Stewart countered with his own contender for the job of McCain’s number two.

"Sen. Hillary Clinton," Stewart said with a level of seriousness. "If you choose Sen. Clinton, you would win this election."

"That’s one I never contemplated," McCain said of the New York senator who is running for the nomination of the Democratic party.

"Do you want to say into the camera right now that you would do that?" Stewart asked the candidate.

"No," McCain said.. "I don’t want to look in the camera and say that I would ever do that."

All Obama won were RED states where Romney supposed to win accept the South!
This needs to be calculated!
CO,CA and MA will definitely go for McCain/Romney and it is enough to capture the White House!
Romney was a popular MA governor!

Desert Storm was just to get our foot in the door, we've been there ever since, and it doesn't look like we'll be pulling out anytime soon.

Senator McCain has no sense of reality. We are knee deep in debt thanks to a war for oil. Our priority should be finding a way to exit the quagmire we have made out of Iraq. Instead he is talking about a 100 year war!

There are two Independents in this house who will probably not vote in 2008...We don't like McCain but we cant stand Obama even more..A vote for him is a vote for milti-billions of dollars in REPARATIONS..To every black in this country including those is prison's, sick, lame and lazy, and on welfare. They just can NOT wait to get their hands of the U.S. CHECK BOOK. They all think they are "OWED"..something and this is the message Obama has been feeding them. NO THANKS..

I'll be so glad when Obama is president. But what will all the racists will do... maybe move to another country? That would be so lovely! :)

After what the republicans have done to our country it is unconscionable to vote for them again. They have to sit out of office for a while and repent. They invaded Iraq for oil, sacrificed four thousand of our fine men and women for greed and dug a hole for our economy while giving away tax breaks to the rich and powerful. They sat idle as well paying jobs left our country. After all this to vote republican again this year is betraying our country.

What has Obama accomplished other than getting elected? Nothing! He has absolutely no significant legislative accomplishments. How did he ever get as close as he has to the presidency with his total lack of legislative achievements?

Obama is also the #1 most leftwing senator out of all 100 according the National Journal. He votes leftist every time and has never accomplished anything besides that! He is not the one to bring both parties together, on the other McCain has a very, very long track record of doing just that and McCain will get far more agreed upon and accomplished.

Obama is a fraud! Presidents have to do far more than make pretty speeches about undefined "Hope" and undefined "Change"! Vote McCain!

Few thoughts:

1) Racism sucks. However, many racists are southern democrats and democrats from midwestern states.
2) Hillary has too much baggage
3) Obama has no experience
4) The newness and excitement will wear off when Obama gets barraged by negative ads by special interests. The naive Obama disappears and people will get disillusioned.
5) Them on the same ticket will be only way to keep diehards from going to McCain...but will make for an horribly awkward main campain.
6) Obama is too liberal, and a "change" motto doesn't change that.
7) It's the Economy stupid. (Obama has no clue, as is evident by his policy ideas)

I welcome an Obama Ticket. I don't like McCain much, but I'm voting for him because he's the best option of the 3 liberals. I prefer McCain's experience, common sense, honor, and policies over corruption and socialism which is what is put forth by the democratic ticket. Obama may be a great guy, but he's not a good candidate. Neither democrat is a good choice for this nation.

Heaven help our country.
