McCain on 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart

ABC News’ Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain today made his 13th appearance on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" -- and his first as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee -- calling himself the "worst nightmare" of terrorist organizations like Hamas.

Comedian Jon Stewart, the show’s host, asked McCain about comments he had made that Hamas, which controls the Gaza strip in Israel and which the United States government considers a terrorist organization, had endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Do you feel bad that you said that?" Stewart asked McCain.

McCain indicated that he did not, because a spokesman for Hamas in the United States had said that the group was hoping Obama would be elected president.

"I think they think I’m their worst nightmare," McCain said. "And I think that I’m their worst nightmare as well."

Stewart also asked McCain about his relationship with President Bush, who has very low approval ratings, and comments McCain made indicating he would support a troop presence in Iraq for decades after fighting has stopped.

"What are you doing with this 100 years thing," Stewart asked McCain. "There’s an ad out that says you want to be in Iraq for 100 years."

McCain explained his comments, which he is asked about regularly on the stump, saying that if there are no U.S. casualties, Americans will be comfortable with a security arrangement such as the one the United States has with Korea

Before the more serious questions, Stewart peppered McCain with questions about what his life is like as the Republican nominee, how he feels about his role as head of his party and what it is like to be protected by the Secret Service, which McCain had originally tried to avoid even after becoming the Republican frontrunner.

"I just resisted that because of the fact that it does separate you from people," McCain said. "But it’s a necessary thing and they’re great people and I’m glad to have them."

Stewart threw out some potential secret service code names for the 71-year-old.

"McDreamy? McSteamy?" Stewart suggested to approval from McCain. "How about this one: Grumple Stiltskin."

For his part, McCain joked that he had picked his running mate. With fanfare he pulled out a piece of paper upon which the name of Dwight Schrute, the power-hungry but bumbling character from the NBC sitcom "The Office," was written. Stewart’s audience seemed to approve.

"That is pandering," Stewart joked when McCain received applause.

McCain’s press secretary Brooke Buchanan explained that McCain is a fan of "The Office" and was trying to make a joke.

Stewart countered with his own contender for the job of McCain’s number two.

"Sen. Hillary Clinton," Stewart said with a level of seriousness. "If you choose Sen. Clinton, you would win this election."

"That’s one I never contemplated," McCain said of the New York senator who is running for the nomination of the Democratic party.

"Do you want to say into the camera right now that you would do that?" Stewart asked the candidate.

"No," McCain said.. "I don’t want to look in the camera and say that I would ever do that."

While I am a registered Democrat, it's looking more like I will be voting for McCain, however, as an economist, his "visions" for the military are a gross misuse of taxpayer funds. When there is SO much needing to be fixed in our country, why spend our taxpayer money to "stablize" and rebuild a country that gives NOTHING back to us. and doesn't pay taxes.

I read through the comments with a mixture of amusement, disgust, a few small smiles, and fascination.

7 years ago, when I became an expat living in the UK, and now Europe, I watched with concern as Bush won once (under some pretty dodgy circumstances, I might add), the sickening events of 9/11 (and more sickening, how the event was used to skew facts and control people with fear), Afghanistan, Iraq...then when he won his SECOND term, I actually cried, sitting up late, feeling so aghast that the country of my birth would be so short-sighted, so easily MANIPULATED into making this buffoon and his tribe of fatcats (NEWSFLASH: When your gas prices go up, WHO DO YOU THINK IS GETTING RICH OFF OF YOU? HELLO???)your designated leaders once AGAIN. To those of you whom so flippantly say you'd rather vote for 'stuffed animals' than Obama, you do reap what you sow.

And now, as food prices soar, weather gets worse, the economy skitters at the edge, Americans lose their homes and jobs, you actually have the idiocy and audacity to make these silly little comments, judging TINY things against the whole of the situation. Trust me when I tell you - the longer you let the Republicans win - the worse your lives will become.

And why? Because they do not - TRULY DO NOT - give a rat's ass about any of you. They came, they saw, they got rich, and on YOUR backs. WAKE UP!!!

Christ on a bike, its depressing to think of you guys screwing it up again.

If you guys only knew how the rest of the world viewed what the last 8 years has wrought. How America is seen as so gravely irresponsible and foolish, and this isn't against the American people, AT ALL, but rather that they've elected people who are so terribly driven by their own agenda and greed, and yet have masterfully managed to make people think that its all better for THEM somehow?

How? Who in his RIGHT MIND looks at the country's present situation and thinks 'Oh yeah, this is better?'

I'll tell you who.

They do..Bush and his buddies. "They got what they came fer".

Please..America. Think.

Don't let history repeat itself.

The world is watching.

Geeze, Louise! What a buncha loonies (no better description) those are who are throwing themselves into supporting the biggest looser in the campaign: Mad-dog McCain! And the palpable hate that Obama seems to generate in the vast, unwashed, bigoted masses is enough to make the Statue of Liberty weep. I guess the Confederacy did win after all, huh, as the rest of the country (the sane ones at least) went about the business of trying to stabilize a democracy that po' white trash (i.e., Southerners, hillbillies, know-nothings, etc.) don't seem to even care about. Clearly Rev. Wright is right...

For a Constitutional Conservative like me, McCain is least worst. At least he understands, like President Bush, the need to defend America and our superior Western culture from the medieval totalitarian forces that want to destroy us. The great theme of most of the posts in this thread are the product of the mainstream, left-leaning, Democrat supporting media, and you people have fallen for their garbage, hook, line, and sinker. Some of us can still think for ourselves and do not need John Stewart to tell us what is happening in the world. I bet most of you believe in man-made global warming too. Sheesh...

God Bless America
only in America we can post our view so openly if you know what I mean.

Adrian, let it go man no one is going to take your government support when McCain is our new president.

You know, reading through these comments, it is easy to see how we got 2 terms of George Jr. The sad news is, if ignorance and bigotry lead us, as a nation, to vote for McCain, we will get exactly what we deserve.

Weep for the future...

These were softball questions. First, suupose there are casualties in Iraq -- then McCain is prepared to cut and run, is that what he is saying? Second, like Brer Rabbit, terrorists organizations KNOW that their "endorsements" do not help but hurt a candidate. They want a reactionary president in the US, like Bush, who responds in an exagerated and ultimately self-prejudicial way to their attacks. Here McCain and the interviewer gloat about what should be an object of great concern.

The only bigotry I see is Blacks voting 90% plus for another Black. Whites have mostly been splitting their votes in these primaries based on their political beliefs, not on race. Senator Obama is a liberal Democrat while I am a Constitutional Conservative who usually holds his nose and votes Republican. I like Obama as a person but disagree with him on the role of government. That has nothing to do with race.

these sound like comments from the typical american idiot who lacks insight, imagination, and understanding of what "life" should mean for everyone!

John McCain is America's worst nightmare.

DDS SAID:

"The Republicans could run a stuffed animal and I would vote for it before I would ever vote for Obama."

Hey Great Idea...8 more years of Reagan!!

Posted by: stub | May 8, 2008 9:19:48 AM

How will Obama win the votes of the ignorant? He won't. We have to come to the realization that Reagan Democrats are Republicans. We have to come to the realization that racists and those who think he is a secret Muslim will not vote for him. We have to realize that Clinton supporters who will not support Obama in the general election did not vote for her on the issues, and aren't really Democrats. The Obama campaign is putting together a new coalition, and we have to work to make that new coalition strong enough to elect him. This is a movement as much as it is a campaign. Take back America! Obama '08!

Lets put this accurately for a change

McCain.. Honest man, good man, republican war machine ideals tho (ICK!)

Clinton.. dirty. .pure dirty.. that's how they rise to power.. but the country was very good under the last one

obama CLUELESS.. that man is all talk and no action.. and will lose in a landslide

I'll take the dirty one who can actually improve the country

The world looks on and waits to see who our next "super power" leader will be? I feel you Americans, I am an Ozzie and I see the wait of the world sits on you American shoulders.
Whoever wins I hope you keep your hopes in God no matter how tough things get for you in the future, from one Ozzie who is greatful for an ally like America God Bless you and your next President!

Posted by: gus | May 8, 2008 9:27:00 AM

You folks on the left don't seem to realize it but most of the world loves America. The Brits elected conservatives, France elected Sarkozy, and Italy re-elected Berlusconi. Eastern Europe, formerly behind the Iron Curtain, love America because we had the most to do with their becoming free people. Africans love America because we do more for them than anyone else. The people who hate America are the ones who want to control the world; like Chavez, Achmadenijad, etc. Oh, and many left-wing Americans who take their freedom for granted and see only America's flaws.

Posted by: Mike | May 8, 2008 9:30:42 AM

again on Ozzie opinion I agree from down under with Mike

Posted by: gus | May 8, 2008 9:34:00 AM

Thanks Gus for the reminder that there are still people in the world who remember us fondly. Reguardless of the outcome thanks for your prayers!!
