McCain Says He Did Vote For George W. Bush
May 09, 2008 1:13 PM
ABC News' Jan Simmonds and Jennifer Parker report: Heightening a he-said she-said brouhaha, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., today disputed liberal blogger Arianna Huffington's assertion that the presumptive Republican nominee voted against George W. Bush during the 2000 election.
"It's nonsense," said McCain, whose campaign has suggested Huffington made up the story to promote her new book. Huffington, a former Republican, supports the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
In a blog posting on her Huffington Post website, Huffington said that she and the McCains attended a dinner party after the 2000 election at the home of actress Candice Bergen where she heard McCain say he did not vote for Bush.
Huffington said McCain's wife, Cindy, told her personally she wrote in her husband's name on the ballot in the 2000 election. In her blog post, Huffington criticized McCain for abandoning his principles now that he's running for the White House.
McCain lost the 2000 Republican nomination to Bush in a bitter battle that saw the former prisoner-of-war's character and family viciously attacked in ads in South Carolina.
Two other guests at Bergen's party, former "West Wing" actors Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff, have come forward this week in the media to say that they, too, heard McCain say he didn't vote for Bush.
Campaigning today in New Jersey, McCain disputed the story.
"I voted, campaigned for, worked as hard as I could for President Bush's election in 2000 and 2004," McCain told reporters. "I voted for President Bush, I said so at the time. I know we're already in silly season, but my record stands very clearly of campaigning all over this nation on behalf of the candidacy of President Bush."
McCain also admonished the media.
"In all due respect, this is all not worth our time ...this happened eight years ago."

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference McCain Says He Did Vote For George W. Bush:
I think he is USING his age as an EXCUSE for not remembering anything! And it happened so long ago it doesn't matter won't go both ways with him, as obviously the character debates being silly for oneside, but not the other! He has been called out as a liar by quite a few accounts of that party, but they better watch it the man has a temper.

Do you think he would really vote for someone who smeared his name in South Carolina and who made him lose in 2000.
Remember it was George Bush's campaign that was saying that he had an illegitimate black child. It would be only human for him not to vote for someone who was spreading lies about him, especially if he knows that no one will really know who you voted for.

Obama for Present! Empty suits unite!

Non-story it may be, but it shows that McCain is continuing to flip-flop and has added out-and-out lying to his other detrimental qualities. When lots of people hear you say something and aren't afraid to tell the truth, you get the truth.

I'm not going to vote for McCain, but I wouldn't stoop so low as to criticize anything he did while being tortured for four years by N. Vietnam. It's not about his age either. Wonder what we could accomplish if we spent all this energy talking about issues. Our country has a few problems to deal with, if you haven't noticed.
Posted by: louielouie | May 9, 2008 3:19:22 PM
McOldguy:
You need to do some serious fact checking. McCain did not "allow" himself to get captured (whatever that means), he was shot down. He didn't give information to the enemy, which is why he was tortured. And he was offered early release by the north Vietnamese more than once, but refused, telling the enemy he would leave AFTER the other American prisoners of war who were held captive longer were released. I'll vote for an "old guy" with integrity like that anytime.

So just who is John McCain? A double-talk express that voted against George Bush in 2000 and 2004, or a straight talking conservative has stood shoulder to shoulder with President George Bush since 2000?
Posted by: john | May 9, 2008 3:59:35 PM
Exactly john - if McCain was smart, he'd agree with the story and try to distance himself as far as possible from Bush.

Boy - talk about ripped. Did ABC just kill all the anti Obama posts and keep the anti McCain posts? Even Im shocked! Talk about keeping the press in check.

American media is runin crazy . there are a lot of people very crazy in this contry , the first is the useless and worthless and a brutish media . your support for Obama will finally destroy the DNC. I will evr in my life regret being a member of this party . I am finally going away for ever from this party it is filled up senseless people like Pelosi etc .

McCain IS smart, which is exactly why he's disputing the nonsense that he didn't vote for Bush.
He wants to shore up the conservative base for the general election. Saying he voted against Bush isn't going to help him with conservatives, it's only going to hurt him.
Good Lord, who would want to admit anyway that they voted for either Gore or Kerry?!
Posted by: RottieLover | May 9, 2008 4:14:22 PM
If McCain did not vote for Bush in 2000 he should be proud of it and not deny it.

Please, like at his age John McCain can really remember.

McCain and his Straight Talk Express have to suck up to the conservatives and Republicans and even Rush Limbaugh who hates him but carries a radio show popular among the extreme right wing. So McCain will have to pander to these idiots. I guess some Americans will never be changed from red to blue no matter what happens to this country. I just hope it isn't a 50-50 election again this November. Obama has to paint McCain has an old, out of touch, war mongering neocon out of touch with America.

I'm surprise there are so many people believe this crap. Someday, some of you will hear Sen.McCain worked for Vietnamese communiste during VN war !!!
Do you believe Sen. Obama worked for Hussein before?

I have no doubt that the story is absolutley true. It is exactly in keeping with his spiteful personality. Plus, he has the same dismissive attitude whenever he is caught in a lie.

Arianna is a Greek shrill.
Obama hates white people.
Neither could ever be elected for anything!
A mixed-marriage made in heaven.
Posted by: Michelle | May 9, 2008 5:18:19 PM
Um. Michelle, what exactly is a Greek "shrill"? And, unless I missed something, I don't think she is running for anything. Other than that, great post.......BTW - your racism is showing.
Posted by: CSD | May 9, 2008 5:23:23 PM
If Obama can sit and listen to racism coming from his wacko pastor for 20 years and not remember one sermon of hatred and anti-American vile then certainly Arianna cannot remember what happened 8 years ago.
Besides, Arianna could not keep a coversation she had 8 minutes ago private if it meant she could "blog" about it. You think she would wait 8 years?
She is "bitter" and is "clinging" to her lost political races and made for convenience marriage.

So what!!! Most people will not make that claim today. Maybe he hasn't seen W's approval rating lately? At least Senator McCain is trying to be honest. I feel a little sorry for him!!! :~(
Posted by: 1968WhoWasI | May 9, 2008 5:45:35 PM
I'm not a McCain supporter but he at least has an understanding of foreign policy and what we must do to survive as a nation in light of terrorism. The 'kid' Obama hasn't a clue. He is inexperienced and hasn't served in the military. He is clueless.
Posted by: Dr. Strangelove | May 9, 2008 6:19:10 PM
Rottielover, Ol John has admitted to giving information to the enemy and did you know that it is against the code of honor for a POW to accept getting out sooner than those who were captured earlier. His military career would have been over and his Admiral Dad may have disowned him.

I'm a REPUBLICAN and I don't CARE if McCain voted for Bush or did not vote for Bush 4 years ago. His views may have been different then. Of course, you still must consider the source of all this. Arrianna Huffington is a BLOW BAG and does not like REPUBLICANS!
Posted by: Al Oakes | May 9, 2008 8:37:17 PM
McCain is a flip flopper:
You've got it all wrong!
Obama and Clinton should be 20 points ahead of McCain in the polls!
Yet the polls show a statistical tie!
If things are as bad as the
MSM claims(the economy, opposition to the war in Iraq), why is John McCain
tied with your candidates in the polls?
President John McCain! It has a
nice ring to it!

all i know is if 3 people, 2 without anaxe to grind, say it happened , then there is probably some truth to it.
my concern is the answer mccain gave to oreilly. he should have said the truth, it was a nasty campaign and whilst he has forgiven bush since he could not quite get the enthusuiasm to support a candidate who smeared him about a non existent, actually adopted, love child.
southern politics is and was rough. and based on race and racial slurs as we know..........
this failure to be honest will come back if all 3 go on an ad and say i was there and mccain is LYING.
silly to lie, IF he did and the other 3 are wrong.

If I were McCain, I would want to BRAG that I didn't vote for George Bush.
Posted by: ChayaFradle | May 10, 2008 4:40:33 AM
What bothers me more about McCain is why he has voted against so many bills designed to support our troops and veterans. Here are some he has voted against, that is when he has been present to vote since he has been missing in action for over 51% of his career in the senate. S-2735 a bill to build and improve military health facilities. S-149 a bill to increase veterans medical care. S-3007 a bill to increase veterans health care funding by closing corporate tax loopholes. S-3141 a bill to provide a stream of revenue for veterans health care over 5 years by closing tax loopholes. S-2909 a bill to provide minimum periods of deployment S-3642 a bill for outpatient care and treatment of veterans. S-1817 an amendment for additional safety equipment for troops. S-452 A bill to provide 1 billion dollars for National Guard & Reserve with equipment in Iraq related to shortage of helmet's, tents, bullet proof vests and tactical vests. S-1218 an increase for medical care for veterans by $850 million. These along with other revelations about McCain's involvement with land developers in Arizona, principally Donald Diamond, a large contributor to McCain's campaign, reaping huge benefits from the support of McCain at public expense, along with many other issues have made McCain un-electable for this former Republican.
Posted by: 1masterstroke | May 10, 2008 9:40:27 AM
There are certain truths regarding the McCain candidacy: Senator McCain will say and do anything to gain the White House; Senator McCain is focused on himself and his ego, not on the people (reflect on the 2004 campaign, when he could have made history by merging two warring Parties and revolutionizing public service).
The voting record of Senator McCain notwithstanding, John McCain has no business in the White House. He is disconnected from the voters and would do little but extend the life of George Bush's policies.
Posted by: saftgek | May 10, 2008 11:02:08 AM
Yes, it happened 8 years ago .. almost. But that is not the issue or the problem. Can the presumptive nominee of The Republican Party tell us the truth. Not that the truth matters. But that he can tell us the real facts and not what he thinks we have to hear. We need it now and we need it from our Leaders everytime. i can not, for the life of me, come up with a situation when a lie works. No a leader needs to be honest, not a quitter, not a maybe man, but an honest caring individual that can be frankly honest with us ... he can tell the boyz a tall tale, he can suggest the opposite to a dictator ... but to us he needs to be honest. We have a tendency to die for people that treat us as real men need to be treated. Don't soft sell a Marine or a true Texan. Hit us with the truth, even if it is a nasty truth. Thank you very much!

Once America gets a good look at McCain, he'll drop like a stone in the polls. For the most part the press has given him a pass, has even wrapping him in the flag, but the reality won't match the myth.

Okay, since no one will say it, or ask. Without being a war here and maverick in the GOP. Who is John McCain? He's not the only soldier that has gone to war and been imprisoned and tortured. We love our soldiers and wish we could honor them all with some form of public recognition, but a key to the White House is not it. We have soldiers right now fighting, being killed and tortured. Their families suffer in silence and grief, and we grieve for them all. So McCain doesn't carry the sole key to the war hero status. The Republicans called his character into question when he ran against George Bush, they trounced McCain in the south. So now he wants to play nice with his party? Gimme a break! John you wanted the nomination, you got it. Now the real race begins and I hope you have the temper for it. The Democratic beast has even started to work on you yet. Go figure...

More reason to consider voting for McCain this fall. Of course he denies not voting for Bush but given what I've heard about McCain who would think otherwise. It was Kerry who wanted him on board as Vice-President so I would suppose he voted for him that year. McCain is pandering to the far right at this point but he's been around long enough that I'm convinced he's more centrist.
