McCain's 'Mission Accomplished' Misstep
May 01, 2008 7:25 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Talal Alkhatib Report: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Thursday that he believed five years ago that the "Mission Accomplished" banner was wrong.
"To state the obvious, I thought it was wrong at the time," said McCain. "I thought phrases like 'a few dead-enders,' 'last throes,' all of those comments contributed over time to the frustration and sorrow of Americans because those statements and comments did not comport with the facts on the ground."
The veracity of McCain's claim about how he felt regarding the banner, which appeared behind President Bush on the deck of the USS Lincoln on May 1, 2003, was challenged Thursday when the Democratic National Committee unearthed video of McCain talking approvingly of the banner in a June 11, 2003 Fox News interview.
In that interview, McCain pointed to the banner to bolster his contention that major conflict had ended in Iraq and that it was appropriate for the Senate Armed Services Committee to hold post-conflict hearings.
"Why was there a banner that said mission accomplished on the aircraft carrier?" McCain asked Neil Cavuto after the Fox News Channel anchor said "many argue the conflict isn't over."
McCain went on to say in his 2003 interview that reconstruction of Iraq would be a "long, long, difficult process" while maintaining that the "the major conflict is over, the regime change has been accomplished" and that it's "very appropriate" for the Senate Armed Services Committee to hold post-conflict hearings.
"I remain confident that we will find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq," he added.

Talk radio people have really messed themselves up. Limbaugh(encourage republicans to vote for Hillary), Hannity(hammered Obama) as did Ingraham. If they succeed in getting Hillary nominated, she, like Obama, will mope the floor with Old Bush-Lite McCain. Their listeners were fooled and they will blame these talk radio people for putting the person they most hate in office---Hillary. The joke is on talk radio-what a bunch of imbeciles.

Louis, i have been on many blogs, and i have not found people saying that they wont vote for obama because he is black. they say they wont vote for him because he is a liar, fraud, inexperienced, racist, hate monger but not because he is black.

Others have said it but it bears repeating. This kin of commentary is saying you won't vote for Obama because he is black.
It is classic Bush Rovian politics - say that the other guy is what you are and make him out to be bad. This approach was patented by them and it has been licensed to Hillary. The corrollary is that if that does not work, you try to destroy them personally on the "character" issue.
You who are parroting Hillary's slime. I think you would do well to go look in the mirror when you accuse Obama of all these extreme things because the person you see in the mirror is really the one you are talking about. Don't get confused.
Hillary, has worked hard through Bill and other surrogates including the likes of yourselves to open the door for this type of derogatory and racist commentary. But it had to be done with the Bush Rovian license because otherwise it is unacceptable. Well guess what, it is also unacceptable the way you present it, not to mention of course, untrue. Where are the monitors on these blogs - getting their talking points from Hillary for you to parrot? This will not help her or McCain win the nomination. For McCain, just wait until more attention turns to him to see how he fares.
The strongest and best candidate is Obama for anyone that looks at this in an unbiased way - and through the lense of what is best for America now. As others say here and elsewhere, Obama is not the messiah nor does he pretend to be, he is just human (even that I admit is perhaps more than some in this race can say) and his goal is to help the American people take back their own future. Its your choice whether you get on the bus or throw yourself in front of it.

You are patriotic when you are white and unpatriotic when you are black even if you show a high sense of love and tolerance for others. So Obama and wright can not go away but McCain refusal to vote for national holiday in recpgnition of MLK so many years back is not racism, yet his apologies in recent time is deemed OK? Can sombody tell me why?
Posted by: Hugo | May 1, 2008 9:45:49 PM
There are no Democrats who would vote for McCain. Only right wingers pretending to be Democrats. It's quite funny, actually, to browse through some of these posts. Things like:
"I'm a black man and I loved Obama. But after the Wright scandal, I will vote for McCain!"

wait till another nation rises above this country called America and their will be no more pride to bear on being from a free country. You have the chance to tell the world that you are free and open minded to truth and healing, but you want to remain in your comfort zones drawn by racial lines authored by your leaders! Only in America have found the greatest men of all time and also in America have the world found the most coward set of people who hide under racial lines. Shame on you and God bless America.

-------------------------
I have to tell you, you need not wait - the rest of the world is going on without the leadership of America, and in fact in spite of its mis-leadership. Yet, as you say, what are people doing about it? Sliming each other instead of addressing the catastrophic issues that America and indeed the world community is facing.
God Bless America? Yes ineed and let's not forget the other humans of all stripes on this god given planet. But first, America has to get its own act together.
I personally see no other candidate up to that task than Obama. Why? because it will take nothing short of a movement the likes of which America has never seen before. A grass roots movement from the people. One the likes of which could not even be imagined by the other two in this race for the leadership, never mind carried out.

Paul, oh please spare us the drama.
There has been anti Americanism FOR DECADES. Geeeze, were you people born yesterday?!
You act like this is the biggest doom and gloom time in our history. We're not even in a recession you dopes.
And you guys say republicans play on FEARS? LOLOLOL.

Please, no! If this is even close to as bad as it seems this year is turning inot even more a of nightmare !

I know Maggie Williams is loyal to Hillary, but please tell me she had nothing to do with or any influence of knowledge of this. She should know better. All Americans, but especially Democrats should know better !

After all we've seen go on this past few months I can't believe people are actually STIL trying to portray Obama as a new, different, and refreshing kind of leader.
Oh puhleeeze. After this past week, that's just laughable.
Posted by: No'bama | May 1, 2008 9:49:17 PM
---------------------------
Sorry, but it is not laughable. It is the truth and America needs to take up this opportunity to vote for Obama. You can go laugh if you must, but that is not helping. And I have seen your negative posts since early on in this campaign. You are no doubt as gleeful as Hillary to see Obama down from this debacle by Wright. Well, I do not beleive that Obama owns Wright or his comments. Nor do I think he shares Wright's misshapen view of the world. I think this will be clear to the typical American voter of all backgrounds, races and religions who are thinking with common sense. Time will soon tell.

The world is watchin America, your ignorance has given us sleepless nights; following Americans to understand how you think. But what is obvious is that formal education is not wisdom, My thinking was that education helps erase some of our ignorance but it is lie, it is rather a shadow that provides comfort for true selfs. You have told yoursleves so much lies about Obama that everyday you feel his is not worth your time. But what you don't realise that a vote for obama is a strong word against washington and how your resources has been wasted in senseless war and how your jobs has been moved to China and India. Your society is changing from and exporter to a lazy consumer economy controlled by a few.

Hugo, again, what is the drama? And Paul too. You guys are starting to crack. Has the kool-aid (laced with who-knows-what) started to wear off? lol. You almost sound in a total panic.
Thousands trying to get into America everyday. Until we have to gate people in, I'm not worried what the others think of us.
America The Beautiful. President McCain. Get use to both.

I would rather have a real man, who knows what war is all about, rather than a kid pup Senator (who seems to have too much money)or a woman who remembers "WELL" running for her life under gunfire! If it wasn't Bosnia - where do you remember being shot at Hillary? I bet John remembers being shot at "for real!" a bunch of times!
We need a firm leader - and he's there waiting! Unfortunately, we have to watch these little panty weights roll around on the floor pulling each other's hair while the clock counts down! At least, they both have given compelling and logical reasons why neither of them is suited to be President! President McCain - GET USED TO IT PEOPLE!!!!!!

There is little that is funnier than young people (in college and a few years after) trying to tell all the rest of us how horrible things are. Uh, you've lived a blip on the radar screen of life. Please. You don't know what hard times are compared to other countries.
SPARE US THIS DRAMA. Most of us are doing fine. Fine enough to have McCain ahead of both dems in the polls.
Live it, love it, learn it.
Posted by: Jo | May 1, 2008 10:16:55 PM
President McCain - get use to it.
And America is still the greatest country, and we don't need "verification" from the rest of the world to know that. Remember Kerry's "global test" gaffe? That basically cost him the election.
So please, keep it up!

I think that America is in a different place today. And it is clearly getting more myopic in my view looking at your comment that it is the greatest country.
Just look at the misplaced energy and debate that is going on today in America in this election. Fighting about race and personality and the stupid comments of a pastor. It would seem people are oblivious to the real and dramatic issues America faces.
Look at Jo above who says "we are not even in a recession". Right and I suppose we could say "we are not really in a war" either and "we don't really have a deficit" and "we know where Bin Laden is".... well you get what I mean. That is an ostrich approach......
I think any person saying America it is the greatest country without even understanding the severity of the issues she faces and the truth of its position in the world today, needs a reality check.
It will require what I said in an earlier post to set America straight and to regain world leadership. Obama is the one that has the ability to do this. The others may be leaders, but they are not visionaries leading a grass roots movement for the change in direction and thinking that is needed for this to be possible.
Posted by: Paul | May 1, 2008 10:17:30 PM
Paul, again the drama. A recession is what? Two months of no growth? We haven't even had one month of no growth. All the liberal media doom and gloom saying we're in a recession (because they want Obama to win) doesn't MAKE IT SO. Everyone I know is doing fine. So shut the freak up.
Obama is not going to win. WHO YOU SURROUND YOURSELF with MATTERS. Character counts. If you can't trust Obama's judgment, how do you even know he'll do what he says he will? Quit being a SUCKER.
Again, President McCain - get use to it.
Posted by: Jo | May 1, 2008 10:23:28 PM
IF WE WERE REALLY DOING THAT TERRIBLE AS A COUNTRY, DO YOU REALLY THINK MCCAIN WOULD BE AHEAD OF BOTH DEMOCRATS IN THE POLLS?????
NO WAY IN HELL.
Period. End of story.
P.S. Barack is no VISIONARY. He's far leftwing radical who would love nothing better to turn this country into a socialist one.
NO THANKS. And guess what? Polls show only 29% want government run health care.
Ooops. You lose again.
Posted by: Jo | May 1, 2008 10:26:00 PM
How unfortunate that we already voted democrat and still have the same same old.
It puts the light of credibility under the bed. Probably the same bed shared by the two parties. How can we vote down corporate America?
Posted by: Jerold Toomey | May 1, 2008 10:28:15 PM
When far leftwing Obamabots say Barack Obama is a "visionary"....that's codeword for socialist. No one is fooled.
You love him because he has your far leftwing values. Quit trying to put lipstick on the socialist pig. We're not buying it. If you nominate Obama (and I hope you do) it's going to be President McCain no doubt. Yeeehaw. Bring.It.On.
Posted by: Jo | May 1, 2008 10:29:21 PM
Obama is no match for McCain. Obama will divide the country like never before. His preacher's hate messages say it all. Obama was in the audience which means he approved of what was said.

Sorry Jo, if it bothers you. Just a dose of reality. There are a lot of people wanting to get into America and other countries like it. It is definitely a place that offers much to someone with nothing. I am not talking about that.
I am talking about the America that I know and how she has perhaps as you say, gone onto the Kool Aid (personally, Idon't touch that kind of stuff - do you?) Someone is needed who will be straight that we need to bring America back to where you and others seem to think she has not left.
Not just somewhere that so many poor people want to go, but bakc to being the shining light on the hill, as Reagan would say. And I would add, to be so for all Americans and the developed world. And may the fence you talk about come down too.
I happen to think that Obama has the right stuff to first see that the change is needed, and second to lead the change - and I mean lead. Not just tell people where to go and to follow them, but harness the common sense and tremendous energy of the American people to move America forward. The goal must be to regain the shine and brighten herself again and bounce some of that light out to the world too..... You certainly won't get that if you start from the premise that everything is fine, when it so obviously is not....
In terms of your comment that you are not worried, have a read of my last post. That is my point, an ostrich mentality is what it takes for the fall of an empire, not the building of one....
America will get what it deserves out of this election - if its garbage in then its garbage out. America deserves better, and if it truly sees the reality of the situation, it will elect Obama. If it does not, it will get one of the other available status quo options.
I would invite Americans to look at the prospects for America and Americans as a whole nation. It has the potential to be greater than the sum of its parts. Right now, it is notably less and a race won by exploiting divisions, will reduce it further. Shame on the exploiters.
I am confident the American era of confusion, hate and fear is going to come shuddering to a close. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time....
And, I believe America will have the courage to vote for a new politics, a new discourse and a new future based on truth, justice and the real American dream. And it will again lead the world.
