Obama and Clinton Camps Dig in on Michigan

ABC News' Teddy Davis and John Santucci report: Supporters of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton clashed bitterly over how to allocate Michigan's delegates at a Saturday meeting of the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee.

"This event that happened on Jan. 15 was not anything close to a primary election and cannot allocate delegates in a normal fashion," said former Rep. David Bonior, D-Mich., on behalf of Obama.

"As a result," he continued, "this does not mean Michigan should not be represented at the National Convention, but it does mean that the delegates from our state should be split evenly between the two remaining candidates."

After Bonior's comments were booed by Clinton supporters in attendance, Tina Flournoy, a top Clinton adviser and RBC panel member, argued that Obama's position would put party officials in the position of displacing the will of the voters.

"What is being proposed here is that you go into a voting booth and at some point later down the road someone decides that your vote is for someone else," Flournoy said. "If we’re going to do that, let’s cancel 2012, and let’s divide all the delegates in all the states."

Clinton adviser Harold Ickes said that, with the exception of affirmative action, there is no more sacred principle in the Democratic Party than "fair reflection" of the voters' intent.

Former Michigan Gov. Jim Blanchard made Clinton's case to RBC members by warning that there could be consequences for the Democratic Party in November if the DNC panel does not allocate more delegates to Clinton.

"If you turn your back on Michiganm you will be flirting with a McCain victory," Blanchard said.

The Michigan Democratic Party has proposed splitting the difference between the Obama campaign's call for a 50-50 split and the Clinton campaign's call for a 73-55 split based on giving Clinton her share of the Jan. 15 vote and assigning Obama the day's "uncommitted" vote.

But for now, neither the Clinton nor the Obama camp has been willing to meet the other half way.

I have no idea how Obama can claim uncommited votes . That has never happened before in united states voting history.

They simply cant do it.

Why dont they just give Clinton her delegates, Obama none.

Then the minuite they rule on it, the uncommited delegates then announce for Obama.

problem solved.

man i love this. keep it up democrats. you are making yourselves look reaaaallly smart.

How can right-minded people consider what we had in Michigan a valid primary? It is truly phony to think that Michiganders will care about how some dumb committee apportions delegates in the general election.

Truly, these people take themselves way too seriously and the Democratic primary here resembled an election worthy of third world governments.

Because then we get into delegate selection and if they are not for Obama he has no say into who is selected, but Hillary on the other hand does.

Problem continues.

@cgeast: Why doesn't the Democratic party do what it said it would do and not seat the delegates? That would take a backbone, though...

Posted by: MIguy | May 31, 2008 3:33:53 PM

i mean, im just blown away by this. first of, why should ANY delegates be counted? they knew full well what they were doing when they did this. the dnc turned their backs on MILLIONS of voters. thats the bottom line. splitting the delegates? more for clinto than obama? are you kidding me?! THE DEMOCRATS NEED TO HOLD THEIR PARTIES LEADERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. florida and michigan simply just shouldnt count. period. think about THAT the next time you go and vote for a democrat.

Giving Obama the undecided votes is ludicrous. You are deciding for the voter! What is the point of me casting my vote if you are going to decide for me. An undecided vote means just that "I'm undecided at this time", or it means my candidate is not on the ballot...and you are assuming that they mean OBAMA, when they might mean John Edwards, or one of many Democrats that parted company along the way, or even better because you do not like any of the candidates. When I cast my vote, little as it is and I say my vote to count or I will not vote at all anymore.

MIguy..

couldnt have said it better myself. no backbone.

Clinton supporters are crazy. You aren't rational, you're just crazed. Be rational.

"But for now, neither the Clinton nor Obama camp has
been willing to meet the other half way."

I don't think I can agree with that.  Obama's camp has already been agreeable to going 50% for Florida with the full delegation, each delegate getting a ½ vote.  This actually gives Clinton something like 9 to 11 more delegates than she'd have gotten if they'd insisted on Florida being stripped of half its delegates as the punishment for jumping the line.  (A peculiarity of the "proportional representation by district" voting in Florida.)
So, they've already gone more than half way.

The problem Obama's folks have here is that they're attempting to negotiate a "fair deal" with an adversary who doesn't want a fair deal, who probably doesn't want ANY deal.  She probably prefers to have a "grievance" to tout to justify taking the fight to the Convention in Denver.  (Likely she'd take the fight to the Convention in Denver anyway, even if they gave her 100% of what she's asking for, but it always looks better to at least be able to claim one has a grievance.)

Obama took his name off the MI ballot and he blocked a revote for MI. Obama gets no votes form MI and he should accept the consequences of his own conduct.

Sen. Clinton should get the MI votes in full as cast for her. That's fair and square.

If Clinton is on the ballot along with "undecided," and Michigans vote for "undecided," it obviously means they vote for someone other than Clinton! If the Clintonites still want to take it all and give Obama nothing, it means that the one who kept the rules of the committee gets soundly penalized. Nice work, Clintonites!

And why would these "uncommitted" delegates immediately announce for Obama?  And how does one enforce that?

Go Hillary! We love you for your hard work and dedication. We are behind you all the way. We will support you for an independent run if the DNC turns its back on you. Thank you for your work and God Bless You.

do democrtas even look at the big picture on this?! do you really know whats happening? this is the biggest voter fraud the country has ever seen. and now they want to try to fix there #@#@ up?! see this is the problem with democrats: every thing they get their hands on, they screw up. they ALWAYS think they can fix peoples problems. thats why i cant stand the democratic party and their views on governments role. think about all of this when you go vote for a democrat for president or congress. thats their philosphy: they are better off managing our lives than we are. take a look at any issue. democrats want total government oversight and control on every aspect of the american people. from welfare, to punishing big oil companies for making too much profit. (which is the MOST ridiculous thing ive ever heard. where does it stop? just oil companies or everyone?) they always think that they can think for the american people. this is just yet another example of the ridiculous democratic mindset. we as americans NEED TO SEE THIS STUFF HAPPENING AND VOTE ACCORDINGLY!!!!

The democratic party either respects the results of elections or it doesn't.

The results of the Michigan primary have been determined by the Secretary of State.

Both Clinton and Obama followed the same rules. One campaign chose to remove their candidates name from the ballot as they are entitled todo under the rules. One candidate chose not to as they are also entitled to do under the rules.

If the DNC thinks it can over ride elections and arbitrarily redecide someones vote for them, I'msure voters will send them a very clear signal in Nov indicating what they think about that.

You either believe in Democracy or you don't. You either respect elections or you don't. Period.

Count the voters' votes. What the h-ll kind of Democrat would not want to count the votes? Apparently the rules committee has in their authority to do so, what kind of Democrat would not want to exercise the authority to count a Democrat's vote? Only some kind of zombie would not count another Democrat's vote. Who told Obama to take his name off the Michigan ballot anyway, wasn't that kind of stupid?

voter...

you are just another example of the crazies, im sorry. im a conservative and believe me i would much rather have hillary in the white house than obama(if i had to absolutely choose), but you think that shes asking for fair treatment?! you people need to see the big picture and not "stand by you're man". FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN SHOULD NOT COUNT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!! and by "negotiating" a deal, you are doing nothing more than adding to this voter fraud.

"see this is the problem with democrats: every

So, would it would be a fair guess that you're either a Republican or a Libertarian then?

I agree totally. The DNC is downright crazy and are showing their true colors. They either reject the votes and stick to their crazy rule or let the elections stand they way they were cast. This is manipulation in the enth degree. The party bosses are so afraid to give up control. What I don't understand is why states are not allowed to come up with their own timetable to run the elections. They want their state represented in the best way and so why should the DNC stick it's long stupid nose and come up with a timetable -- I just don't understand. The Democrats are really beginning to show that they are so much like their symbol 'the donkey'.
