Obama Camp: Trip Overseas Is 'Under Consideration'

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama brushed off Sen. John McCain’s recent criticisms of him as more of the same "diversions" that are "standard fare" for the Republicans, but his campaign spokeswoman said he is considering a trip abroad.

McCain has been criticizing Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, his only trip to the war zone. The Arizona Republican says Obama can't really know the situation in Iraq if he has not seen it first-hand.

On the plane ride from Colorado to Chicago, Obama told reporters that McCain and the Republicans don’t have much ground to stand as they try to make an issue out of the frequency of his visits to Iraq.

"The Republicans don’t have a strong position to argue when it comes to substance," he said. "Their foreign policy has been a failure over the last eight years. The war in Iraq was a huge strategic blunder, our standing in the world is diminished, we’ve spent hundreds of billions of dollars and lost thousands of lives, Afghanistan is in worse shape than anytime since 2001 and we have [al Qaeda leader Osama] bin Laden sending out audio tapes, so not surprisingly they’re not going to want to argue the substance of what’s happened in their foreign policy, they’re going to come up with diversions."

McCain extended Obama an invitation to go to Iraq with him. According to Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki a trip to Iraq is not out of the question, but a trip with McCain is.

"A trip abroad is under consideration but there are no plans at this point," Psaki said. "But Iraq is a place to consider."

McCain said today in Reno, "Sen. Obama has been to Iraq once a little over two years ago, he went and he has never seized the opportunity except in a hearing to meet with General Petraeus [the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq]."

Today Obama responded to a question about McCain's remarks with a laugh.

"That’s just a typical sarcastic comment that doesn’t haven’t anything to do with the substance and is patently untrue, since I just saw General Petraeus when he was testifying in Washington," he said.

Obama was challenged further, asking why he had not had meeting with Petraeus that was outside of a hearing.

"This is just a flip comment, it’s not designed to actually talk about substance," Obama responded curtly not answering why he had not held meeting with Petraeus. "It’s a political comment that doesn’t get anywhere."

Obama in his campaign trip to general election states this week has been solely focused on McCain, and he says he’s not surprised the Republicans and McCain have been focused so aggressively on him.

"So far this is pretty standard Republican fare," he said of the back-and-forth with McCain recently. "He’s adapted George Bush policies and he’s going to adopt George Bush's tactics. I don’t know why anybody would be surprised by that."

Obama will take a break from campaigning Thursday, spending the day with his family in Chicago. Then he’ll return to the campaign trail, hitting the last two primary states of Montana and South Dakota heading into the weekend.

I love how he acts just like Bush above the rest of us .

You know most democrats said if Bush got elected he take us to war with Iraq every one just forgets that. I think the lying media played a big role in the run up to the war most of us uneducated voters did not want this war,and knew it was the wrong move.

This is a crock - so none of us now in the U.S. can have an opinion on the Iraq war (or any other foreign policy issue) unless we've actually visited the country?

Okay then, I've been to Iraq and McCain is full of **it. He has no idea of what is going on culturally there or how to secure Iraq. He is needlessly provoking Iran into another conflict. He is a shadow of the man I voted for in 2000.

The irony about Barack considering a trip abroad is that since he's chaired the subcommittee on Foreign Relations (beginning in Jan 2007), the only country he's been to is England for a long weekend.

In all probability, his passport has expired. If, however, he does manage to visit Iraq, he'll probably want to have a nice chat and spot of tea with some of the Iranian-backed terrorists.

Poor McCain, what a loser. He can barely read a speech written for him off the TelePrompTer. Sniping sarcastic and caustic comments will backfire on him. He comes across as a shallow, little, spiteful excuse for a man. Just because you were a POW doesn't give you the right to act like an ass*, or give you the privilege to say anything and everything without accountability for the facts. Even repugnants can't stand this man. McCain= Bush, simple fact. He will lose in a landslide to the Dems in November.

"... and is patently untrue, since I just saw General Petraeus when he was testifying in Washington," he said.

McCain said Obama hasn't met with Petraeus outside of a hearing and then Obama confirms that. So it is Obama that is lying. Obama will try but fail to fool anyone with lame tactics like this. Clinton he's not.

We can't afford a President that has to take on-the-job training. It's time to move Hillary Clinton into the role of nominee and the eventual President.

Hillary in '08 or '12, the lower the year number the higher the IQ of the Democratic Party!

this is a senator from arizona who don't know whether he is democrat, republican or in-between.. i think he should add liberman to his ticket so he can learn from him the differnce between 'sunni & shia' or "alqueda & iran"..
what a joke.. mccain is finally talking foreign policy..

Sluggo: Hillary should do a lot of things, but taking your advice is not one of them. Not your usual wit in your post, I'm disappointed.

Yep, Obama is just an empty suit. albeit a nice suit, but still just an empty suit.

Sluggo: Got it - I like your usual one or two sentence punchlines, but that one needed something more methinks.

Obama speaks of Afghanistan being "...in worse shape than anytime since 2001...". Isn't he the chair of the committee that is supposed to be studying serious issues related to Afghanistan, and they have not met? Maybe, it was just an appointment to make him look like he has some experience. After his state legislative "experience", maybe he thinks you really do not have to be in attendance to chair the committee.

He would not know what to look for or ask if he did go. Besides, he is only interested in getting troops out in 16 months, no matter what changing cirucumstances might dictate. Then, of course, he could send troops back in if necessary. God help us--he is green!

I've read a number of articles about McCain and the war in Iraq and what he says makes sense. He is saying that if we pull out quickly the war in Iraq will be to no avail. We have to continue to support and train Iraqis so that they will eventually hold their own and not need American intervention. I've also read they are finally having success with this. Listening to Obama it's almost as though he hasn't done his homework on this. It seems as though he's just saying what he thinks the voters want to hear. I wish McCain would propose that offer to Hillary and I would like to hear her response. How Obama is reacting to the Iraq situation kind of makes me wonder just how knowledgeable he actually is.

@jab: Iraq is more secure because we are paying the Sunni tribes and including them rather than equating all Sunnis with the Ba'ath party. Our military is striking against the Shiites, who we mistakenly thought were our "friends". We have inserted ourselves in a tribal war. The Iraq war was won by our military years ago; it is the diplomats in the US and Iraq who have failed. The reason Iraq is making progress is precisely because the Iraqi government now realizes there is a timeline and an end to US patience and money. They have to figure it out or they'll get killed - that's a great incentive in my opinion.

Hey! I have an idea! When Obama goes to Iraq, maybe he can take his uncle, the one who helped liberate Auschwitz!

Oh....wait a second.....

BO talking about foreign policy is nauseating. It is apparent that he cares nothing about the majority of Americans concerns besides the Middle East. He seems to thing that a trip overseas is going to make him appear big n mighty. His underestimation of American intelligence is insulting.

Obama should NOT go to Iraq.

The Republicans know that they can't win the General Election from Obama, they want him to go to Iraq so that their Blackwater mercenaries can take him out.

ok, so obama goes to iraq and finds either the disaster that we know it to be, or he finds a bastion of american loving citizens... and if he finds the former, will mccain admit he's a failure just like his mentor bush? doubt it....

Doesn't have the gonads to commit!

Par for Obama.

Just like his voting record

Barack, if you go to Iraq; you better watch out for Al Quada, insurgents and the US troops too. We do not like you or trust you plus we are heavily armed no thanks to you. In fact, you did not want us to have body armor. Dont come to Iraq; you are not wanted ass wipe. You claim that you did not vote for the invasion in Iraq. Wooo. You are special. Fact is, your a junior senator who was not in office at the time so you could not vote. Your a fool but you will not fool the 2.2 million troops who will be voting against you.
